SEASON OUTLOOK Returning 12 letterwinners, seven seniors, six starters and its All-American libero, Lynn University’s volleyball team enters the 2010 season with high expectations. Coming off of three-consecutive NCAA postseason appearances, the Fighting Knights aim for their first Sunshine State Conference title and another deep run on the national stage. Returning starters for the Blue and White include four-year letterwinners Devon Woolard, Lacy Redwine, Sophie Gagnon and Haley Pratt as well as second-year Division I transfer seniors Kala Abdell, Katie Bradley and Mallory Deneen. The seven standouts accounted for over 86 percent of the Knights’ offensive production from a year ago. Running the show at setter, Woolard has already decimated the all-time assists record and looks to put together her fourth-straight 1,000 assists season. She also needs 109 digs to become just the second LU member of the 1,000/1,000 club and the first in assists and digs. Pratt and Gagnon will get the nod in the middle, having combined for 381 blocks in their tenure in Boca Raton. Both seniors rank in the top-10 all-time in career blocks as Pratt is second with 222 and Gagnon is sixth with 159. Pratt needs just 20 rejections to pass former All-American Daris Rodriguez’s program record of 242 blocks while Gagnon should comfortably put herself in the upper-echelon of the books by the end of the season. Redwine, an AVCA All-American and All-SSC performer as a junior, anchors Lynn’s defensive presence at the libero spot. Setting a program record with 543 digs and 4.76 digs per set last sea-

4

son, she has an outside shot of topping the all-time career digs record of 1,808. On the outside, the trio of Abdell, Bradley and Deneen will provide a strong rotation of skill and athleticism. Abdell led the Knights with 320 kills last season, Bradley topped the squad with 3.09 kills per set and Deneen was second on the squad with 28 service aces. Coming off the bench and earning starting nods depending on rotations, Chelsey Semprini adds additional firepower to the Blue and White’s highoctane offense. An SSC All-Freshman performer in 2009, she averaged 2.36 kps on the right side. Waiting in the wings are a bevy of talented reserves. Junior defensive specialist Kara Bailey looks to shake off an injury-plagued sophomore campaign to match or surpass her 94 digs and 18 service aces as a freshman. Joining Bailey on the back row are sophomores Michelle Jordan and Darian Weppner, both strong defensive players that will also see time as service specialists. Fellow sophomore Abbey Brokop will see time as a reserve setter while the Knights utilize her strong serving skills as well. Despite returning its entire roster from last year, Lynn will also depend on three talented newcomers. Graduate senior Keiu Polluveer adds depth and experience to the middle while junior transfer Natalie Harville will split time in the middle and on the outside. Freshman Angie Caple will also contribute on the outside. Five teams ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA Preseason Poll, and three more receiving votes, highlight the 2010 schedule for the Fighting Knights. The

Blue and White open the campaign by hosting the Courtyard by Marriott Classic where they face 16th-ranked Lewis and top-receiving vote getter California (Pa.) along with Valdosta State and Colorado-Colorado Springs. Lynn then heads south to take part in the 5th Annual Nova Southeastern Sharks Classic the following weekend to battle 18th-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato and a trio of in-region Gulf South Conference programs in Arkansas Tech, Christian Brothers and West Alabama. Always a brutal conference schedule, the Knights then head into SSC play where they were picked to finish third in the league while garnering a pair of first place votes. Lynn plays five of its first six SSC matches on the road, including at traditional league stalwarts Florida Southern, Barry, third-ranked Tampa and Eckerd. Wrapping up the first half of conference play against 11th-ranked Saint Leo in early October, the Knights take a respite from league action but not from tough competition. Hosting 22nd-ranked and 2009 national semifinalists Flagler to open the week, the Blue and White then take part in the Florida Southern South Region Crossover where they face North Alabama and West Alabama, as well as West Florida who is receiving votes in the AVCA poll. Lynn benefits from the home-andhome flip by hosting five of its first six second half SSC matches to close out the regular season with the lone road trek to nearby Nova Southeastern.

Lynze Roos is in her fifth season at the helm of the Lynn University volleyball team. The all-time winning head coach in program history with an 81-51 record, she has led the Fighting Knights to four-straight winning seasons and back-to-back-toback NCAA Division II South Region Tournament appearances. Lynn put together its third-straight season with at least 20 wins in 2009 while reaching the NCAA postseason once again. Under Roos’ tutelage, the program produced its fourth AllAmerican as Lacy Redwine garnered honorable mention AVCA honors while Devon Woolard became the third CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-American with second team recognition. Three Knights in all picked up Academic All-District accolades and the Blue and White were honored with their fifth-straight AVCA Team Academic Award, the only Sunshine State Conference program to achieve that feat. Building on their success from 2007, the Blue and White had their best season in program history in 2008. Lynn set school records for wins in a season with 24 and finished third in the SSC for the second time in three seasons with an LU-best nine league wins. Advancing to the NCAA postseason, the Knights finished third in the South Region, arguably the toughest in the nation. Three Knights broke career marks in 2008 under Roos’ watch. Senior All-American Daris Rodriguez set the all-time record for block assists (212) and total blocks (242), fellow senior Christie Schade topped the digs record with 1,808 and sophomore Devon Woolard broke the assists mark with 2,284 in just two seasons running the LU offense. Lynn had its breakout season in 2007, Roos’ second year on the job. Tying a then-program record with 22 wins, the Blue and White reached the postseason for the first time ever. The Knights advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA South Region tournament with a 3-1 victory over Eckerd before falling 3-2 to top-seeded and second-ranked defending national champions Tampa in a heartbreaking five-game marathon. On top of Lynn’s 22 wins in 2007, the Knights also set a multitude of team and individual records. The Blue and White set single season program marks for kills (1,925), assists (1,757), block assists (458), total blocks (308) and block per game (2.39) while Camila Lins set the school record for kills in a season (539) and Rodriguez broke the marks for block assists (108) and total blocks (126). Under Roos’ tutelage, the Fighting Knights produced their first All-American as Rodriguez earned AVCA Honorable Mention honors as well as being named Lynn’s Blue and White Female Athlete of the Year. In her first campaign with the Blue and White, Roos’ squad posted just the second winning season in program history at 1513, playing with a shorthanded roster. Lynn’s 8-8 Sunshine State Conference record in 2006 marked the most league wins in school history and the Knights’ highest SSC finish tying for third. Roos set LU volleyball records for winning percentage (.535), overall and conference wins for a first-year coach. Under her guidance, the Knights also defeated rival Barry University for the first time ever. In addition to her duties at Lynn, Roos coached for Boomers VBC out of Fort Lauderdale and also served as the setters specialty coach with all levels from 13-18. Her 18-Elite team placed in the top 20% at the Colorado Crossroads and Big South Qualifiers in 2007 while her 17-Elite team placed in the top 20% at Big South and Lone Star Qualifiers in 2008.

The epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus. Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudly from its rafters. Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms and laundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches and administrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairback seating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seating capacity is 1,000. The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a space that has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophy cases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of each academic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement. A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall of Fame. Thirty former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for their accomplishments while with the Blue and White. The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downed Michigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two days later, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernle was on Sept. 12, 1996. Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of the baseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of Sunshine State Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments. The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen its share of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playing surface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championship teams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.” Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators are located on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on the other side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II National Finals. The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knights men took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 final on the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeated Lander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest margin of victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history. Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with Military Trail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue and White play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboard in right field with the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship banner, new Bermuda grass infield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-right center, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field. The softball field is located adjacent to the baseball field and share outfield bleachers. This field saw a program record 88 home runs sail over its fences in 2005, which are 190 down the lines and 220 to straightaway center field. The softball field received a face lift in 2006 with the possibility of a new stadium in the near future. Boasting a combined seven national championships and 12 Sunshine State Conference titles, Lynn University's men's and women's tennis programs will usher in a new era beginning in 2009 with the Perper Tennis Complex. The state-of-the-art million-dollar complex contains a total of six courts, covered chair-back stadium seating, an electronic scoreboard and is the first outdoor lighted facility on the Lynn campus. Although not on situated on campus, the Lynn men’s and women’s golf team take advantage of some of the best courses that Boca Raton has to offer . The women’s program practices at three local golf clubs, Boca Lago Country Club (www.bocalago.com), Boca Woods Country Club (www.southfloridacountryclub.com) and Boca Delray Country Club (www.bocadelray.net) while the men’s squad calls both Ocean Breeze Golf & Country Club (www.oceanbreezegolf.com) and Boca Country Club (www.bocaresort.com/golf) home.

Sunshine State Conference Founded in March of 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single-sport organization to become the NCAA Division II “Conference of Champions.” Started as a basketball conference, The SSC has since grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. A weekly check of national rankings in nearly any Division II sport proves the point, as SSC member institutions consistently find themselves ranked amongst the nation’s elite. Now with nine full members, the SSC is the proud owner of some 74 NCAA Division II National Championships in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The Orlando-based league recently added to its already full trophy case with Nova Southeastern University’s first women’s golf title and Lynn University claiming its first baseball national championship. The SSC currently crowns regular-season champions in volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The league also administers season-ending tournaments in men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s rowing.
