Restaurants Just down the street the new business, The Mill by Perfectly Paired, brings another Bellingham business north to offer fine wines and cheese (and more) in the base of Lynden’s famed 72-foottall windmill in a completely renovated space.

T

he downtown Lynden restaurant scene has experienced unprecedented growth with the addition of new eateries of all styles.

The opening of downtown Lynden’s Waples Mercantile Building, a complete remodel of a 1914-built historic multi-level department store into a mixed-use retail and inn has helped lead some of the growth, moving three new restaurants into the building. Avenue Bread, Drizzle Olive Oil & Vinegar and Overflow Taps have all made their home in the newly opened Waples Building, while The Mill by Perfectly Paired creates another prime stop down the street in the freshly remodeled Dutch Village Mall. Avenue Bread has proven popular in Whatcom County for decades with multiple locations in Bellingham. The move to Waples marks their first entry into Lynden, providing housemade breads, soups, breakfasts and plenty more in downtown Lynden. Drizzle may be known for its olive oil and vinegar tasting room, but locally sourced charcuterie (fine meats and cheeses) plates from their local chef bring another Bellingham business into Lynden. Overflow Taps, a locally established craft beer and wine stop donates 25 cents of every pint to fund organizations fighting the global water crisis.

But the new restaurants downtown only touches the tip of what Lynden has to offer. Find traditional Dutch baked goods at the Lynden Dutch Bakery or even a new style of desserts from the bakery’s new Just Desserts, located in Lynden’s Fairway Center. Old-fashioned diner fare doesn’t get better than Fairway Café and there are plenty of steaks to go around at Steakhouse 9 Restaurant and Lounge at Homestead Golf Course. Downtown, the bakery and Dutch Mothers Restaurant offer traditional Dutch favorites. Downtown you will also find Greek and Italian (Syros), Thai (Chandara House), seafood (Jofish), meat pies (Good to Go) and more. Expect a bevy of Mexican-inspired restaurants throughout town, burgers (Grant’s), pizza (Westside and Milt’s), and Japanese (Nami). Those searching for some southern comfort can find Jake’s Western Grill in the Lynden Towne Plaza. And if a sweet tooth is more your thing, check out Edaleen Dairy’s retail stop for homemade ice cream from the Lynden dairy, along with an array of treats and sandwiches. Of course, if you’re in a hurry, bakery and coffee-centric items can be readily found at some of Lynden’s local coffee shops or its homegrown The Woods Coffee regional chain, with three locations in Lynden.
