Lamphere Insurance, Financial & Estate Planning Medicare Health Coverage Question: I’m eligible for Medicare and...I got a letter from my Doctor’s Group recommending that I contact an Insurance Broker in another town. Do I have to call them in order to get a health plan to go with Medicare? Absolutely not!! We frequently have clients who bring a letter like this to our office. They are upset that they received the letter, which they believe gives them no choice but to go with an out-of-town agency. Because we often hear this complaint, and to help protect our clients, we spoke with a Washington State Insurance Inspector. He commented that although the letter may seem misleading, it is not illegal. Insurance books tell us that what is ethical and what is legal are not always the same thing. When selecting an Insurance Broker you may want to consider: • Working with someone you trust and feel comfortable with • An agent with a good reputation and a long-standing presence in your community • The agent’s expertise and experience in specialized types of coverage • An agency that works with multiple insurance carriers, which allows them to be less biased and offers a better selection for the consumer • An agency that does not have apparent ties to a particular physicians group.
