of the typology of sub-urban settlements and identification of factors that positively affect the profiling of suburban communities. Analysis of the social absorption capacity of the communities of sub-urban communities, creating conditions for the preservation of socio-cultural qualities of settlements, the joining of priorities and advantages of the village and city environment, as well as the possibility of regulating the negative impact of suburbanization and creation of conditions for coping with the intensification of suburbanization. ••• International contribution: • The outlook for residential and regional development in Slovakia to 2015 redefined the basic assumptions of research on settlement and regional development as well as being a research priority for science and research in the forecast period, which have been designed to be able to react to the significant changes in trends in residential and regional development in Slovakia, but also to address significant intersettlement and interregional disparities to enable the generation of additional research topics, programs and projects from them, and also to respond to the main research problems in the area of European research. • Identification of sources of regional disparities, the main factors and options for addressing imbalances indicated in various types of regions and settlements. Relatively complex multidimensional and multidisciplinary analysis and synthesis of individual developmental stages of socio-spatial situations of Slovak society in the pre-transition and transition periods and their main spatial levels (republican, regional and settlement). The knowledge obtained presents a considerably up-to-date knowledge base on the status and developmental direction of regional development, the nature of existing inequalities between regions of the Slovak Republic, and has had significant effects on the use of regional and local self-governance, and on development and updating plans for the social and economic development of regions • Analysis of the current state and development perspectives of the settlement structure of Slo-

vakia with an emphasis on defining roles (functions) on how the further development of the country can play out in individual settlement types in the context of regional and trans-regional development. Applied multidimensional typology of settlements has enabled the definition of types of settlements, their spatial distribution, their development potential, widening disparities in development potential of settlements (between cities and villages, depending on the size of the municipality and its regional affiliation), the existence of social barriers to the development of settlements in various combinations and their spatial concentration in certain regions (territories).
