Love Story Steve and Linda Johnson had already been married for 20 years when Steve’s company, Johnson’s Modern Electric, got a job wiring the first Windsor Jewelers store back in 1986. The electrical contractor became one of Windsor Jewelers’ earliest customers when he purchased a diamond ring for Linda. “Working there, I saw how Rob always treated his customers fairly and honestly,” Steve says. “Unfortunately all of our jewelry had been taken in a robbery of our home and I had Windsor Jewelers custom craft duplicates of Linda’s original wedding rings. Steve continues, laughing, “I’ve done all my jewelry shopping at Windsor ever since.” High school sweethearts, Steve was the first guy Linda ever dated. Destiny separated them for a while when Steve went off to college while Linda was still back home. However, thoughts of her were dominating his every waking moment. He was missing her terribly. “I was going nuts, so I got a buddy back home to get word to her that I loved her and was missing her,” Steve reminisces. However, it didn’t quite go the way he anticipated. “She told him to tell me that as far as she was concerned, I was the last man on Earth she ever wanted to see again!’ Crushed by her reply, he vowed to change her mind. He didn’t know when and he didn’t know how, but he knew they were going to be together – he just felt it deep in his bones.

50 YEARS LATER WRITTEN BY LYNDON CONRAD BELL

Some time later, back home from college for a visit, he went to see her himself. Once again, Steve professed his love for Linda and asked her to please reconsider. This time, she told him to “Get lost!” to his face. Despite Linda’s protests to the contrary, her dad predicted that Steve was the man she was going to marry. Eventually Linda called Steve, they went out on a date and have been together ever since. “With things finally progressing, I eventually got up the nerve to propose,” Steve recalls. “It was at a football game; I asked her, she said yes, and that’s where I gave her the original ring.” Linda spent the rest of the evening showing off her engagement ring to all of her friends. They were married in 1966. His car back then was Steve and Linda Johnson reminisce about their ring purchase with Windsor a 1964 Chevrolet Impala Jewelers president Rob Simon. Convertible. This was their ride to the Diplomat Hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they spent their honeymoon. For their 50th anniversary, Steve quietly had the Chevrolet restored (yes, he’s owned it all these years) so he and Linda could recreate their honeymoon trip; complete with Linda’s new diamond ring and a 50th anniversary ring from Windsor Jewelers.

Luxury A CUP OF

Elite Coffees For the Discerning Palate By Lyndon Conrad Bell

Luxury, true luxury, is more about the experience than the expense. And while it is true the two often go hand in hand, ultimately, the experience is what you always remember. This realization, in part, inspired Bryan-David Scott to create Cup of Luxury, the most extraordinary coffees offered anywhere in the world.

To get there, he had to elevate the selection process to new heights. From the choice of beans, to the roasting process, to delivery to the singularly fortunate souls who are blessed to partake; every possible effort is made to ensure only the absolute best of the best finds its way into the French presses of Scott’s highly discerning customers.

Soft-spoken, but deeply impassioned, Scott has undertaken a concerted effort to create the world’s first 100-point, five-star coffees. Working in conjunction with an independent panel of 34 world-class chefs, sommeliers and connoisseurs, Scott has created a line of handcrafted coffees specifically designed with the most discerning palates in mind.

“Each of our coffees, regardless of origin, are handpicked, hand-washed and hand inspected prior to exportation,” Scott says. “Only an estimated 20 percent of coffee harvested in the world qualifies as specialty grade. Our Cup of Luxury coffees are comprised of the top .1 of one percent of the specialty grade.”

“We are the only coffee company in North America, and quite probably the world, to offer handcrafted coffees for the elite coffee aficionado,” says Scott. “Each Cup of Luxury coffee— whether single origin or custom blend—is handcrafted, roasted on order in small batches, five-star rated and scores 100 points.”

Scouring Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the Gayo region of Sumatra, Panama and other exceptionally noteworthy coffeegrowing areas, Scott has aligned himself with only the most discerning growers. Further, he only accepts shade-grown beans nurtured in pesticide-free groves. Operating within these exacting standards, he ensures the experience of the Cup of Luxury devotees always surpasses their lofty expectations.

Breathing in the wonderfully intense aromas; reveling in the richly beautiful colors and finally savoring the complexity of the flavors of Scott’s extraordinary creations is a singularly mind bending experience. Consistently outstanding, each Cup of Luxury blend delivers a full mouth feel, a specific velvetiness on the palate and a long lingering finish—utterly devoid of bitterness. In other words, Scott has unlocked the secret of the perfect cup of coffee.

12

WINSTON-SALEM

“In diamond terms, our coffees would grade as FL, IF,” Scott enthuses. “In wine terms our coffees are most often compared to Screaming Eagle, Dom Perignon or Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits, France. In automotive terms, we are Rolls Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin.”

“Only an estimated 20 percent of coffee harvested in the world qualifies as specialty grade. Our Cup of Luxury coffees are comprised of the top .1 of one percent of the specialty grade.” The choice of beans is, of course, absolutely essential to the final product. However, the roasting process can make or break even the most carefully curated blend. While the exact Cup of Luxury process is a carefully guarded secret, Scott is a strong advocate of drum roasting in micro batches, using the renowned Probat roaster. Further, each order is custom blended and custom roasted—just before delivery—to ensure optimal freshness and maximum depth of flavor. “With drum roasting, each coffee bean is brought to perfection, beautifully caramelized and bursting with flavor,” Scott says. “Though roast profiles do change, the uniformity of excellence

WINSTON-SALEM

in each roast remains consistent. We are masters at singleorigin and custom crafting our blends.” Coffees held to such exacting standards are, of course, offered in very limited quantities. As a result, Cup of Luxury coffees are offered exclusively at CupOfLuxury.com. In addition to individual bags of the various blends, a variety of membership options are available. Cup of Luxury coffee club memberships include positively amazing benefits, including VIP experiences with coffee growers, private tasting events and access to exceptionally rare coffees, produced in quantities of less than 100 pounds worldwide.

WINDSOR JEWELERS AND PHILANTHROPY:

A HISTORY OF

Giving

When Rob Simon founded Windsor Jewelers in Winston-Salem in 1986, he offered major international brands like Roberto Coin, John Hardy, TAG Heuer, Breitling and many others – the likes of which were being seen for the first time in the Carolinas. Still associated with those highly vaunted watchand jewelry makers to this day, over its 30-year history, Windsor has had fruitful relationships with many such companies. While justifiably renowned for those partnerships, Windsor has yet another, perhaps lesserknown affiliation—also dating back to its founding. “Windsor Jewelers has a long history with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,” says Emily Graybeal, the Foundation’s development coordinator in Charlotte. “It began with the Winston Salem Chapter about 30 years ago.” 18

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Its mission is to accelerate lifechanging breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications, particularly in children. Built on a grassroots model of people collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, JDRF unites their efforts on a national stage to pool resources, passion and energy. Simon particularly appreciates the efficiency of this collaborative model. “It has been rewarding to be with an organization that cuts out so much duplication and triplication of expenses by combining community efforts,” he says. “We have witnessed so much growth in the Triad Chapter (of JDRF) and have been proud to play a small part.”

With the expansion of Windsor Jewelers to Charlotte in 2013, Simon extended the company’s JDRF partnership to the Greater Western Carolinas chapter, based in Charlotte. Each year for the Foundation’s annual Hope Gala, Windsor has generously donated pieces to be featured as the highlights of the Gala’s end of the evening Grand Prize Sweepstakes. In a similar fashion, Windsor Jewelers supports the efforts of the Hospice and Palliative CareCenter’s efforts in 13 North Carolina counties. The first hospice in North Carolina, the CareCenter’s mission is to provide compassionate care for people and their families living with a life-limiting illness, through quality medical, emotional, spiritual and social support. “My mother-in-law, having been diagnosed with dementia and end stage renal failure, was referred to hospice,” says Ward Miller. “When we arrived, we met a kind and caring staff who cared for her as if she was one of their loved ones. My wife and I are eternally grateful to hospice because they took us on a compassionate, caring journey with our mother that ended peacefully, lovingly and most of all, with dignity.” A unique aspect of the Hospice and Palliative CareCenter is its conscious effort to embrace diversity. The CareCenter’s Inclusion and Access Program is led by a team of committed community members, board members and staff who share a passion for increasing access to every individual in need of care. As it identifies any underserved population or geographic area, the CareCenter does everything possible to reach out, raise awareness, dispel myths and, most importantly, make sure it is an accessible organization to all. The generosity of companies like Windsor Jewelers makes this mission much easier to achieve.

“Windsor Jewelers and Rob Simon are very passionate about supporting the important work and mission of Hospice & Palliative CareCenter,” says Carolyn Breese, the organization’s director of development. “They have generously supported our signature fundraising events for over a decade, creating meaningful impact in the lives of hundreds of patients and their families every day.” These are but two of the many philanthropic efforts Windsor Jewelers has supported over its 30 years of service to the community. For Ben Simon, son of the company’s founder, it’s one of his favorite aspects of the business. http://www.jdrf.org/triad

WINSTON-SALEM

“The best thing about being one of the owners of Windsor Jewelers is representing our family-owned business in our local community,” he says. “My father has taken great strides to truly support many charitable organizations and now that we’ve expanded to Charlotte, it’s been fun to start from scratch and to get to know a new community outside of the Triad through local organizations, clients and new local friends.” Philanthropy has been a core aspect of Windsor Jewelers from day one. Just as Rob Simon started the company and maintains relationships with Roberto Coin, John Hardy, TAG Heuer and Breitling, his charitable work continues to drive Windsor Jewelers’ efforts to make the region a better place to live, work and retire. uthor, musician, conductor, educator, philanthropist and entrepreneur, Robert Simon is a man of many accomplishments. In addition to starting North Carolina’s premier jewelry store, Simon founded Winston-Salem’s Piedmont Wind Symphony (which he also conducted), served as an associate professor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and has written three books. While Simon’s childhood ambition was to be a musician, his career in jewelry started out as a means to that end. Shortly after earning his degree in Music Education and Conducting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981, Simon went to work in a jewelry store in Winston-Salem to support his dream of becoming a professional musician. Discovering his affinity for the business, he went on to a position as a representative for a national jewelry wholesaler. This required him to travel all over the country and gave him a firsthand look at the inner workings of jewelry retailing from many different perspectives. “I traveled endlessly during those years, up to 300 days a year on the road and it was quite grueling. Bear in mind, we did not have cell phones, laptops or GPS back in the 1980s. I had a road map, a customer book and a telephone calling card,” Simon recalls, laughing. “It was great training for my career though. In fact, it turned out to be my postgraduate education in the jewelry industry.” After starting a wholesale jewelry business in 1983, Simon—along with his brother Gary and their friend José Santoyo— opened the first Windsor Jewelers store at the intersection of Fourth and Cherry Streets in downtown Winston-Salem in 1986. Having had the advantage of observing best practices

all over the United States, he saw a niche in the marketplace his local competitors had overlooked. Thus, Windsor Jewelers debuted as a purveyor of highly renowned luxury brands, the likes of which were completely new to the Carolinas at the time. “My dream was to create the finest independent jewelry store in the region,” he enthuses. “So we opened with jewelry by Roberto Coin and Oscar Heyman— aligning ourselves with designers long before it became common practice in jewelry stores. We also brought in higher-end timepieces from companies like Breitling and TAG Heuer. My goal was to give customers more than they were expecting, both in terms of the products and the level of service we provided through professionally trained associates with extensive product knowledge.”

The first professional wind ensemble in the entire southeast, Simon saw an opportunity to bring worldclass musicians to Winston-Salem to perform, as well as inspire and educate younger musicians. Serving the Piedmont as its founding conductor and artistic director, he programmed 25 seasons with a broad variety of genres of music, in addition to recording nine CDs.

To ensure visitors were treated to attention specifically addressing their needs, Simon insisted the staff become highly educated about Windsor’s offerings. This enabled them to better fulfill customers’ exact desires, rather than merely selling them on whatever was hot that month. An idea whose time had clearly arrived, the public responded with tremendous enthusiasm. Within five years, the venture had outgrown its original location.

“Along with Classical performances, we brought in guest artists from the worlds of Jazz, Pop, Country and Rock. These included Arturo Sandoval, The Three Irish Tenors, Kenny G, Three Dog Night, Paul Anka, Dionne Warwick, Neil Sedaka, the band America and many others,” Simon recounts with pride. “This attracted a much broader audience. We also created opportunities for talented students to play alongside seasoned professionals, both to encourage their growth—and to ensure the future of the music.”

For most people, nursing a business through its fledgling phase would have been an all-consuming task. However Simon, the consummate multi-tasker, also made time to establish the Piedmont Wind Symphony in 1989.

Simon held the baton at the Piedmont for 25 years, recently entrusting its continued success to the talents of Matthew Troy, conductor of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and a previous associate conductor of the Winston-Salem Symphony.

Currently celebrating 30 years in business, Rob Simon will continue to serve his customers with excellence and make a difference in his community. Out of his work with the Piedmont came Simon’s third career—as an author. With three titles to his credit, Simon most recently published the memoirs of Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, recounting the gifted musician’s relationship with his mentor Dizzy Gillespie. The book is titled, Dizzy Gillespie: The Man Who Changed My Life: From the Memoirs of Arturo Sandoval. To write it, Simon collaborated with Sandoval’s wife Marianela to enshrine the role Gillespie played in Sandoval’s emergence as a world-renowned musician and bandleader. The accompanying CD titled “Dear Diz” won Sandoval his 10th Grammy award and Simon wrote the jacket notes, based upon information from the book. “Most people have heard of Dizzy Gillespie and Arturo Sandoval, as they were both highly influential musicians,” Simon recounts. “But I was surprised to learn Gillespie worked so hard to bring Sandoval’s music to the world. I felt it was a story that had to be told.” Meanwhile, the progress of Windsor Jewelers continued unabated. After outgrowing yet another location, Simon moved Windsor to its present Stratford Road address in 1995. This led to a 1999 partnership with one of Switzerland’s premier watchmakers—Patek Philippe. Patek saw a kindred spirit in Windsor, as it is also an independent family-owned company with a passion for what it does and represents. Together, these developments elevated Windsor Jewelers to the top tier of jewelry retailers nationwide, setting the stage for the company’s next development. Charlotte is one of the nation’s best-kept secrets. Few people realize it is one of the two largest financial centers in the country—second only to New York City. Small wonder then, Simon located the first Windsor Jewelers store to be established outside of Winston-Salem there. Launched by Simon, his son Ben (who joined the company in 2013) and Windsor Jeweler’s general manager Kevin Slusher, the Charlotte store opened in 2013. “Representing exclusive watch brands such as Patek Philippe, Panerai, IWC, Breitling, Jaeger LeCoultre and NOMOS Glashütte, we have become a destination for 22

avid watch collectors from all over the region,” Ben says. Our intention is for Windsor Jewelers to be a major presence in North Carolina, in both watches and jewelry. Charlotte is key to accomplishing that.” Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern performed the ribbon cutting of the store’s Patek boutique. The following year, the Simons were invited to Geneva to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Patek Philippe. One of but 12 North American retailers so honored, they also attended a dinner hosted by the Sterns. This remains one of Simon’s greatest honors. Today, along with the world’s finest timepieces, Windsor Jewelers is known for jewelry from the likes of John Hardy, Charles Krypell and Forevermark. Further, with talented jewelry makers on staff, Windsor Custom Design Jewelry turns customers’ dreams into realities, with one of a kind custom heirloom pieces. “Kevin and Ben leave no stone unturned when it comes to fulfilling a client’s needs”, says Simon. “Whether it’s service or sales, they do everything possible to ensure our customers are treated to the best experiences possible. They have been instrumental to our success in Charlotte, as well as our continued accomplishments in Winston-Salem.” Simon also strongly believes in giving back to the community that made it possible for him to enjoy so much success. As a result, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Hospice, the Forsyth Humane Society and Second Harvest Food Bank are among the organizations benefitting from his philanthropic endeavors. Simon and Windsor Jewelers also award a watch to Winston-Salem’s Police Officer of the Year, in addition to sponsoring numerous other civic activities. For over 30 years, Simon also served and chaired a board for a summer study abroad grant program at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, sending over 200 recipients overseas. Currently celebrating his 30th year in business, Rob Simon has many accomplishments upon which he can reflect with pride and gratitude. His motivations will continue to stem from serving his customers with excellence and making a difference in his community. For Simon, the two simply go hand-in-hand.

Every fine Swiss timepiece is designed to provide you with years of accurate and reliable service and to do that, periodic maintenance and care is required to ensure optimum operation. Whether you have an automatic, mechanical or quartz timepiece, a wornout part or aged oil inside could cause your watch to start losing time or stop altogether. Depending on the brand and age of your watch, Windsor Jewelers recommends having it professionally serviced every 3 to 5 years. Most quartz watches require replacing the batteries every two years, so having your watch inspected and serviced at that time is optimal. Automatic and mechanical watches may require a complete overhaul after two or three years of use. The process involves the movement being removed from the case, completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned, then reassembled, properly lubricated, timed and tested to factory accuracy. In addition, we offer a one-year service warranty on most watch brands. As an Authorized Rolex Service Center, Windsor Jewelers is part of the worldwide network of Rolex-trained watchmakers. We follow the Rolex Service Procedure, designed to ensure that every timepiece leaving a Rolex workshop complies with its original functional and aesthetic specifications. Each movement is completely overhauled and each case and bracelet is meticulously refinished to restore its luster. Timekeeping accuracy and waterresistance are rigorously tested to guarantee the level of quality and reliability you naturally expect from a Rolex watch, and backed by a two-year warranty.

ROLEX

& Yachting

Rolex’s relationship with the maritime world dates back to the brand’s earliest days. In his endeavor to create an accurate and reliable wristwatch, Hans Wilsdorf, the company’s founder, used the marine chronometer’s renowned precision as the benchmark for his timepieces. Then, in 1926, to protect their high precision from dust and moisture, he devised the Rolex Oyster, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch. The reliability, accuracy, and waterproof nature of the Oyster immediately made it a natural partner for oceangoing events.

Some forty years later, Sir Francis Chichester set sail from the port of Plymouth in the UK aboard his yawl Gipsy Moth IV. On his wrist was an indispensable navigational tool, a 1966 Rolex Oyster Perpetual. After 226 days of sailing, Chichester arrived back in Plymouth to become the first person to singlehandedly circumnavigate the world from west to east using the clipper route (eschewing the Panama and Suez canals). Further, he had done so with but one stop (in Sydney, Australia). Today, Rolex remains at the heart of many of yachting’s toughest events. Chichester Archive/PPL

Rolex Fastnet Race

The world’s largest open ocean race, the biennial Rolex Fastnet, is held off the coast of the British Isles. Regarded as a benchmark for offshore racing, it covers 603 nautical miles (694 miles). The course runs from Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, to a turnaround at Fastnet Rock off of the southern coast of Ireland, then finishes in Plymouth. In one of the most remarkable Fastnet victories ever recorded, a father and son team, Pascal and Alexis Loison, became the first two-man crew to win the race outright. Hosted by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, Rolex has been the Fastnet title sponsor since 2001. The club was formed after the first running of the race in 1925.

Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

The company has been the title sponsor of the annual Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race since 2002. The 628 nautical mile course (723 miles) runs from Sydney, Australia to Hobart, Tasmania. While the fastest boats finish in about two days, most competitors face up to five days at sea in a wide variety of conditions. Hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the event began in 1945, when Captain John Illingsworth of the British Navy was asked to join the club’s annual Christmas cruise from Sydney to Hobart. He agreed, with the condition they make a race of it. They’ve done so ever since.

The first Farr 40 Championship was held in 1997. Since then, the Championship has been conducted in 10 different locations, in seven countries, and on three continents. However, the final stages are characterized by gentle breezes, requiring skippers to call upon all of their skills and experience to maintain speed. The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club instituted the China Sea Race in 1962, after one its members returned from a cruise to Manila and recounted the trip. Rolex has sponsored the biennial event since 2008.

Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II

One of the fundamental elements of yacht racing is timekeeping. The accuracy and reliability of a skipper’s timepiece are as key to the success of a team as the skill of the crew. Introduced in 2007, the Oyster Perpetual YachtMaster II features programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the fly-synchronization to help skippers perfectly position their yachts for the most advantageous start.

REAL MEN WEAR WATCHES It’s About More Than Just Time By Lyndon Conrad Bell

A wristwatch speaks volumes about the status, tastes and lifestyle of the man to whom it is attached. For this reason, in certain circles, a gentleman’s choice of timepiece is as important as the tailoring of his suit. Styles and functions aside, watches are divided into two basic categories, based upon their movements (the internal mechanisms they employ). These are quartz (electronic) and automatic (mechanical). Quartz movements get their power from a battery, while automatic movements capture the energy generated by the motions of the wearer in a spring engineered to release it at a fixed rate.

“...a gentleman’s choice of timepiece is as important as the tailoring of his suit.” Between the two, automatic movements are more highly regarded. While a good quartz watch is indeed more accurate than an automatic, the time and expertise required to build the extremely complex automatic movement makes it more respected. Constructed by hand, many automatic timepieces require as much as a year (or more) to complete. With but a few exceptions, most of the world’s finest luxury watches are produced in Switzerland.

It has been said the successful man should own at least three timepieces; one suitable to his occupation, a dress watch for formal occasions and a more robust chronometer for recreational pursuits. As you might well imagine, the sky is the limit when it comes to price. Among the factors figuring into the value of a wristwatch are the type of movement employed, the number of complications (or functions) offered, the material(s) from which it is constructed and of course, the reputation of its maker. A complication refers to any feature a timepiece accomplishes beyond marking hours and minutes. These can include reporting the month, day and date, as well as the phases of the moon. Other complications include multiple time zone, power reserve, sweep second hand and alarm functions. There are

also complications suited to the specific needs of activities such as diving, yachting, flying and automobile racing. Timepieces suitable for these purposes employ chronographs capable of measuring time down to the tenth of a second. Most luxury wristwatches are constructed of stainless steel or gold. Their crystals are usually scratch resistant synthetic sapphire with anti-glare coatings. However, the many and varied elements comprising the functioning and renown of any given watch are just a fraction of the appeal. Another huge part of what makes watches so fascinating is the depth and breadth of their histories. What’s more, beyond all of these things, there is a personal aspect as well.

“...the successful man should own at least three timepieces; one suitable to his occupation, a dress watch for formal occasions and a more robust chronometer for recreational pursuits.” Given a man’s choice of timepiece is in many ways a reflection of who he is; the act of passing a favored wristwatch down to one’s son is a time-honored method of stringing together a family’s legacy. Each time a young man looks down at the watch his dad wore, he’s reminded of who his father was and all of the things the man did to provide for his family. And ideally, it also inspires him to measure up.

PASSING THE

Baton...

BEN SIMON CONTINUES IN THE FAMILY TRADITION With the expansion of Windsor Jewelers into the Charlotte market, so began the passing of the baton to the next generation. Ben, Rob Simon’s eldest son, took the reins at Windsor Jewelers in Charlotte working side by side with his dad and Kevin Slusher, general manager at the Winston-Salem store, planning and preparing for the opening of their second location in the Queen City in 2013. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, Ben spent his post college years working in New York City with renowned watch brands, Breitling and Omega, before coming back to North Carolina for the launch of the second Windsor Jewelers store. A self-described watch aficionado, Ben has been responsible for bringing in some of the newest and most exciting watch brands to both store locations. But Ben knows more than just about watches. Well versed in diamonds, Ben had the unique experience this past year to be the guy on the other side of the counter buying an engagement ring for his girlfriend Jade, a fellow UNC Chapel Hill graduate. “It was a harrowing experience and I’m the guy that sells diamonds. Planning how to pop the question and where and when, was the most difficult part of the process!” After months of carrying the ring around with him, Ben finally decided to propose at his grandparents’ beach house on the water during Fourth of July weekend, 2015. He and Jade are planning a wedding in May of 2017. Jade is also a familiar face at Windsor Jewelers as she works with Ben at the Charlotte store.

NEW BUILDINGS DEFINING MODERN ARCHITECTURE by Julian Ellington

Among the achievements of humankind, architecture stands as one of the most noteworthy. From the ancient Puebloan cliff dwellings, to the pyramids of Egypt and Mesopotamia, to the cathedrals and castles of medieval times, each civilization’s architecture stands as a testament to the technological prowess of its era.

Without question, one of the most significant developments in the world of architecture was steel frame construction. Structures employing this technology have long reigned as the world’s tallest edifices—one of which is first on our list of buildings defining modern architecture.

SHANGHAI TOWER SHANGHAI, CHINA At a jaw-dropping 2,073 feet (just under one half of a mile), Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world. With 121 floors, it offers 7.5 acres of enclosed space. The LEED Gold Energy Label certified tower’s double glass facade functions as insulation, while its distinctive twisting shape enables it to stand up to typhoonforce winds. Divided into nine zones, each comprising 12 to 15 floors, Shanghai Tower houses offices and a luxury hotel, along with entertainment, retail, and cultural venues. Its elevators are the fastest on earth, capable of traveling upwards at the rate of 1,640 feet per minute.

“THE COUCH” TENNIS CLUB IJBURG AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS Capable of seating up to 200 people, the roof of the Tennis Club IJburg sweeps upward to form a spectator platform offering outstanding views of the club’s center court. In so doing, it allowed the architects to create a very narrow building for the clubhouse to free up as much space as possible for tennis courts. Inside the building, the “couch” is accommodated by a gracefully sweeping ceiling backed by large windows offering soothing views of the waters of the IJMeer. Situated so the largest windows face north, the building is bathed in natural light during the day, while staying cooler in summer.

HARBIN OPERA HOUSE © Hufton+Crow

HARBIN OPERA HOUSE HARBIN, CHINA Situated in an area of wetlands, the Harbin Opera House’s fluidic form seems to have emerged from its surrounding waters and acquiesced to the prevailing winds. Comprising some 850,000 square feet, the curvilinear structure houses two theaters, as well as a large public plaza. Crystalline glass curtain walls made up of transparent pyramids draw attention to its smooth white aluminum exterior panels. These permit interior lighting to accentuate the building at night. Inside, the organic forms continue with Manchurian Ash formed to resemble gently eroding timber. The grand theater seats 1600 patrons while the more intimate space accommodates 400.

4 THE LEARNING HUB SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA For its Learning Hub, the board of NTU Singapore (Nanyang Technological University) wanted a building reflective of contemporary human interaction. Social and learning spaces are interwoven within the 12 rounded towers. Rooms are corner-free and devoid of an apparent front or back. This permits professors to engage with students more easily. It also encourages students to collaborate. Open spaces and garden terraces offer areas for lingering and conversing, with the overall goal of bringing people and differing ideas together.

“OCULUS”: THE WORLD TRADE CENTER TRANSPORTATION HUB NEW YORK CITY Soaring articulated ribs of white marble punctuate the 800,000 square foot structure, which serves as a point of convergence for more than 200,000 New York City commuters daily. Sized some two and half times larger than New York’s famed Grand Central Station, the Oculus anchors the four World Trade Center towers, the WTC Memorial, the World Financial Center and the Winter Garden. The grand public space is also made available for events. A sliding 5,700-pound glass panel, 355 feet in length, crowns the structure to admit natural light. Plans are to open it once annually for 102 minutes each September 11th to commemorate the 2001 World Trade Center attacks.

MESSNER MOUNTAIN MUSEUM CORONES SOUTH TYROL, ITALY The Messner Mountain Museum Corones is literally embedded within the peak of Mount Kronplatz, some 7,464 feet above sea level. One of a set of six museums established by renowned climber Reinhold Messner (the first person to climb Everest without tanked oxygen), MMM Corones celebrates the traditions, history and discipline of mountaineering. Buried within the summit, the structure is insulated by the mountain itself. The exposed portals are constructed of concrete colored to reflect the tones of the surrounding limestone peaks. Meanwhile, the interior exhibition spaces are connected by a series of staircases designed to mimic cascading waterfalls.

LOUVRE ABU DHABI ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Its primary exterior feature, a white dome some 590 feet in diameter, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is meant to reflect the architecture of the mosques, mausoleums and madrasas central to Arabian culture. While the patterns within the dome appear random, they are actually a carefully arranged set of geometric openings designed to be evocative of interlaced palm leaves—a traditional Arabian roofing material—casting shadows. Lending a delicate laciness, the design also reduces the dome’s apparent mass. A haven of cool in the desert city, the Louvre Abu Dhabi provides shade during the day as well as an oasis of light at night.

8

TAO ZHU YIN YUAN TOWER TAIPEI, TAIWAN Also known as the Agora Tower, this twisting foliage adorned edifice forges a symbiotic relationship between its inhabitants and nature. The helical design optimizes the potential of each floor’s plantings to receive sunlight, while mimicking the basic structure of DNA, the foundation of all life. Another nice benefit of the design; each apartment is afforded virtually unobstructed views, while maintaining privacy. In keeping with its eco-friendly theme, the building employs a rainwater capture system for the plants, and a solar roof provides energy. Meanwhile, low emissivity glass mitigates solar gain, while simultaneously arresting thermal loss.

9

CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY CHINATOWN BRANCH CHICAGO, ILLINOIS A total of 118 vertical aluminum fins of varying heights serve as embellishment while providing a louver effect to reduce heat gain within the library. The fins also permit expansive outward views for people inside the rounded triangular building. While the shape was partly dictated by the layout of the bordering streets, the building’s Feng Shui, (the ancient Chinese philosophical system of spatial arrangements and their consequence upon the flow of energy), was considered as well. Conducive to extensive landscaping as well as the fluid movement of pedestrians around and within the structure, function heavily influences the Chicago Public Library Chinatown Branch’s form. Native grasses cover the roof to provide both insulation and a visual highlight.

JOHN HARDY

More Than Just Jewelry, It’s a Lifestyle

John Hardy’s luxury handmade pieces are evocative of the synergy between designers and artisans who create out of respect for people and the natural world. Canadian art student John Hardy moved to Bali in 1975, where he became enraptured with traditional jewelry making techniques while studying with a master Indonesian artisan whose family designed jewelry for Bali’s royal court. This organic nature permeates every John Hardy design created since the company was formed. Adapting ancient techniques to contemporary designs, Hardy’s collaborations with his mentor are mirrored today in the way his designers and artisans work hand in hand, as did the people who created for Balinese royalty. Characterized by a dedication to produce pieces with evocative symbolism while drawing upon traditional craftsmanship, John Hardy jewelry is made to engender personal connections. Known for his designs in sterling silver, which is symbolic of purity, associated with the moon and evocative of intuition, Hardy applies a technique to oxidize the silver to create contrast, texture and rhythmic patterns. This is readily observed in the company’s Bamboo, Heritage and Dot collections.

Adhering closely to the Balinese jewelry making techniques of Rentai (woven chain), Tenun (woven mesh), Jawan (granulation) and Ukiran (cut work), John Hardy jewelry achieves a signature style. In traditional Balinese jewelry, these elements are employed to tell stories in both abstract and figurative designs. In homage, Hardy’s jewelry often applies Ukiran to the inner surface of a piece, where a secret story resides against the wearer’s skin.

Naga Collection

Bamboo Collection

Mythical creatures and talismans of Balinese folklore inspired the elements of the Legends Collections; Naga, Cobra, Macan and Eagle. Naga’s intricate scales and curves are reminiscent of the Water Dragon tasked with protecting the ocean’s pearl. It is also a term used to refer to people who possess potent, animal-like qualities. Bracelets, earrings, necklaces and rings featuring beautiful scale-like patterns in black woven leather, silver and precious 18kt gold are graced with the dragon motif. Hand crafted, the pieces are finished to exacting detail, even from hidden angles. Worn facing inward, Naga bestows love and abundance. Facing outward, it provides protection.

Macan Collection

The Legends Cobra collection is all about transformation, renewal and vitality. Spirals of stone and precious metal are rendered in swirls of London blue topaz, blue topaz, and white sapphires against hand-carved sterling silver to imitate the cobra’s patterned skin. Or, you can choose a more sophisticated look with black chalcedony and black sapphires mixed with white sapphires offered in twist and wrap designs. Known for its fierce spirit and preservation abilities, the Macan tiger is the namesake of the Legends Macan collection. Bold stripes of blackened sterling silver, white diamonds, or black sapphires form the tiger’s head as it is represented in several pieces. The piercing eyes of Swiss blue topaz captivate and intrigue. Macan invokes courage, strength and passion.

Cobra Collection

The men’s Legends Eagle collection signifies freedom and independence. Eagle heads and feathers are beautified with smoky quartz and sapphires set in sterling silver, leather and bronze.

For John Hardy’s Classic Chain Collection — his most iconic men’s line — multi-geometric patterns are rendered in 18k gold and sterling silver. Bringing the classic design solidly into the contemporary world, the Modern Chain Collection vividly incorporates the Rentai concept and adds a modern-day edge to the ancient woven technique. The symmetrical, luminous and expressive patterns are a logical extension of the Classic Chain design. Yet, Modern Chain stands on its own as something fresh, new and innovative.

Eagle Collection

Classic Chain Collection

Each of John Hardy’s collections conveys such evocative symbolism and honors the transmission of creative energy from the artisan to the wearer. In so doing, it becomes an eternal connection to the source of its inspiration. Just as John Hardy maintained his connection to the Balinese people who were his inspiration, his jewelry creates a connection between the wearer and the beauty of that ancient culture. A reflection of a deep and abiding respect for our place upon the Earth, this is more than just jewelry—it’s a lifestyle.

1 cup ice ½ cup Godiva Chocolate Liqueur ¼ cup creme de cocoa ½ cup caramel flavored vodka ½ cup whole milk (2% also works well for less fat) Garnishments: Caramel syrup (for rim of martini glass) ¼ cup crushed pretzels Optional Garnishments: 4 caramel candies dipped in coarse-ground sea salt Milk chocolate bar (to make chocolate curls for top of drink) DIRECTIONS: Prepare martini glasses by placing a layer of caramel sauce and crushed pretzels on separate plates. Dip and turn rims of martini glasses into caramel sauce until evenly coated. Dip caramel-coated glass rims into pretzel crumbs until evenly coated. Place ice in a martini shaker. Add Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, creme de cocoa, caramel vodka and milk. Shake vigorously for around 30 seconds. Strain martini into prepared glasses. Optional Garnishments: Add desired amount of shaved milk chocolate curls (using a vegetable peeler; shave chocolate bar across the long edge of the candy bar). Dip fronts and backs of caramel candies into a small bowl of coarsely ground sea-salt until coated. Place two caramels on a cocktail pick and place in martini (adds a great touch of salt flavor).
