Marking on

Hilton Head

Celebrating 35 years this year, Forsythe Jewelers continues to bring the world’s best designer jewelry and gifts to Hilton Head. Carrying the most popular designer brands, this family-owned business provides an unhurried, small-town shopping experience to every customer who enters the store. Over the past three decades, the store has established itself as an island landmark and its name is synonymous with shopping on Hilton Head. In fact, the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce recently named Forsythe as its “Small Business of the Year.” Storeowner Andrea Bragg keeps Forsythe on-trend by traveling the world to meet personally with designers and see firsthand where and how the items she chooses for the showcases are made. As a member of The American Gem Society, Forsythe Jewelers takes pride in being among only a small percentage of jewelry stores in the world dedicated to high standards of professional ethics and education. For many locals, Forsythe is their “neighborhood” jewelry store where they are warmly greeted by name. For first-time visitors, the shop is the perfect backdrop for choosing a gift to remember their Hilton Head vacation. For returning visitors, shopping at Forsythe is as much of a part of their vacation as an evening bike ride or walk on the beach…it’s an event they’ve been anticipating since their last trip to the island. Forsythe allows customers to slow down and shop at a pace that only a vacation can provide…no rushing or compromising; they’re now on “island” time.

Chatelaine Gold & Garnet A curated collection of Chatelaine and Renaissance designs in 18k gold with garnets reflects sparkling promises of health, happiness and prosperity for Chinese New Year.

Chatelaine Silver Ice and Gold The Chatelaine Collection exalts the stone, presenting each signature checkerboard-cut gem in a delicate setting that allows maximum light to enter. Diamond-covered prongs embrace the gemstone with the style of traditional fine jewelry settings. Line bracelets and earrings update a traditional style with color, and drop earrings play with shape and scale, mixing gemstones of various colors and cuts.

Sybil Yurman once told David that she wanted a “bracelet that told time.” This was the starting point for a timepiece collection that combines signature David Yurman design elements with exceptional technology and craftsmanship. Now, playing on the new look of the Albion® Collection, we introduce a watch that truly combines timekeeping with jewelry. The watch’s face, square with rounded corners, takes its inspiration from the collection’s recognizable cushion shaped gemstones. Its linked bracelet makes the design perfect for pairing with a stack of David Yurman bracelets.

philanthropy

Forsythe Jewelers believes that giving back is ALWAYS in style. Each year the store and its employees support a number of different nonprofit organizations whose outreach positively affects the Lowcountry. Whether through a unique piece of jewelry for the American Heart Association’s “Heart Ball” silent auction or an instore donation drive for the Hilton Head Humane Association, or even a corporate sponsorship of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s season of performances, Forsythe believes in giving with a cheerful heart. The store recently had the opportunity to respond to the needs of the community in a very fashionable way. Forsythe teamed up with the world’s most popular jewelry brand to host a David Yurman Charity Event. When David Yurman asked storeowner, Andrea Bragg, to find a deserving charity that would be the right fit for the special evening event, she quickly reached out to a board member from Volunteers in Medicine (VIM), a local organization that has provided free medical care for local residents since 1993.

Andrea Bragg presented Dr. Ray Cox with donation checks from the recent David Yurman Charity Event

“VIM came right to mind,” explained Andrea. “They are one of the most established and well respected organizations on Hilton Head. They allow families, many with children, access to free healthcare in times of need. The staff and I agreed that this was who we wanted the event proceeds to benefit.“ With a charity in place, the Forsythe and David Yurman teams began planning a night of fashion and philanthropy…from the delicious fare to the even more delicious collections of jewelry, everything came together. The event was a huge success. The event allowed Forsythe Jewelers and David Yurman to award VIM with a check for a combined total of over $10,000. 6

“VIM is so grateful to Forsythe Jewelers and its owner, Andrea Bragg, for hosting the David Yurman Charity Event and selecting VIM as the recipient of part of the generous proceeds generated that evening,” says Dr. Ray Cox, VIM Executive Director. “Forsythe’s efforts serve as a prime example of all the good that we can accomplish together and will make a distinct difference in the lives of our less fortunate neighbors. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with their team and to see the wonderful turnout from VIM supporters and friends in this special community that we call home.”

David Yurman donated a timepiece for a raffle with 100% of the ticket proceeds benefiting VIM. Cherie Hellman, Assistant Director of Patient Care at VIM, was the lucky winner!

More About VIM Volunteers in Medicine was established on Hilton Head Island in 1993 and provides free medical, dental, mental health, vision and prescription drug care for those residents of the community who live and or work on Hilton Head or Daufuskie Island, earn less than 200% of federal poverty levels and are underinsured or uninsured. In 2015, VIM provided care through more than 30,000 patient visits. VIM has also helped patients around the country by serving as a model for 97 additional free health clinics. Funding is through grants and donations. VIM neither seeks nor accepts government support. More than 600 volunteer physicians, nurses, dentists, chiropractors, social workers and laypersons manage 23 medical specialties and 5 disease management clinics for those patients with chronic disease such as diabetes and hypertension. Golden Gate Collection Inspired by an iconic American monument, this collection owes its namesake to the legendary Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Roberto Coin harnesses the extraordinary nature of the human mind, which so aptly accomplishes such tremendous feats of architecture. Always in search of innovative design, Roberto Coin sought after an even more extreme aesthetic with this collection, by delving into the studies of constellations, digital networks and human DNA. At the end of his tedious exploration, he found the Golden Gate Bridge to be a culmination of genius minds, efficient design and soaring imagination – no pun intended.

8

The prolific Italian designer has reimagined this monument into a collection featuring a sleek silhouette and high polished gold surfaces. Within each design lies a strong, fascinating structure beckoning that of the iconic bridge. This reinterpretation results in a collection that is both intense and refined. Set in 18K yellow or white gold and available in necklaces, earrings, rings and bangles, each piece tells a story of tireless innovation, revolutionary design and inspired technique.

9

Rosette Collection Roberto Coin designed the extraordinary Cento diamond with the brilliance and fire of love in mind. The exclusive 100-facet architecture of the Cento diamond has nearly double the facets of a traditional round brilliant diamond. Set in 18kt white, yellow or rose gold, the Roberto Coin Cento Collection offers remarkable radiance and breathtaking design.

ADVENTURES BEYOND THE ISLAND Experience the heart of the Lowcountry in Bluffton, just 12 minutes from Hilton Head Island. Situated on a bluff overlooking the pristine May River, Bluffton is widely considered one of the last true coastal villages in the South. Bluffton’s rich history tells the story of the Lowcountry’s beginnings - and there’s no better place to begin than the Heyward House, Bluffton’s official Welcome Center. For a twist on the Lowcountry experience, take a boat ride across Calibogue Sound to secluded Daufuskie Island, a throwback to days when life moved at a slower pace and time was measured by the ebb and flow of tides. Daufuskie Island is at the center of the Gullah culture which is still in existence today. With no bridge to the mainland and few paved roads, Daufuskie has retained a rural feel, preserving its white sand beaches, ancient oaks and pristine saltwater marshes much as they were 200 years ago in the era of Sea Island cotton. CLASSIC CHAIN Hand-woven precious metal, a symbol of community and human bond, are trademarks of John Hardy’s most iconic collection, the foundational expression of the brand.

14

John Hardy, an artist and visionary, visited Bali in the 1970s and was enchanted by the island’s sublime beauty. He founded an authentic collective with local artisans and, to this day, we continue to operate a company deeply rooted in the essential values of community, artisanship and sustainability. Each of John Hardy’s distinctive collections convey evocative symbolism and honor the transmission of creative energy from the artist to the wearer. When you wear a piece of John Hardy jewelry, you become part of this legacy.

CELESTIAL ORB Smoothed and polished to a rounded gleam, the new Celestial Orb captures light and allows for the purest possible expression of the stone’s beauty and energy, further illuminated by brilliant pavé accents.

This “family” business has been selling jewelry on the island for the past 34 years, but its three-generation bloodline stretches back to 1927 in upstate New York. The grandfather of Debbie Forsythe Berling, daughter of Barbara and Richard Rochow who opened Forsythe Jewelers at Pineland Station here 35 years ago, opened his jewelry store of the same name nearly nine decades ago up north. Debbie worked with her parents at the Pineland location, moved with them to The Shops at Sea Pines Center as one of the first tenants 25 years ago, and bought the store from her parents in 2000. She sold the business over the summer to Andrea Bragg, a 14-year employee. “It’s still a family business, but it’s a different family,” Bragg said. “We call our clients the Forsythe family. Our clients are like our family, they’re not just customers. We know their names, their children’s names, what’s going on in their lives and what’s happening with them. It’s a relationship business.” And a successful relationship business. Since its humble roots here as a “mom and pop” operation that sold jewelry from a variety of vendors with just a few showcases, it has evolved into a high-end luxury enterprise, thanks to Debbie and Bragg’s teamwork. “We’re a much larger store now that carries all the top jewelry designers,” Bragg said, name dropping David Yurman and Roberto Coin as examples. “We have customers that appreciate our sense of fashion and our sense of style. They’ll see here what they see in the fashion magazines. For a small island, we’re a big-city store with a small-town feel.”

M Y L A G O S M Y W AY

Steven Lagos launched the LAGOS brand over 30 years ago with a vision of jewelry that could be timeless and elegant, yet at the same time modern and bold – just like the ultimate LAGOS woman. But who exactly is she? Read our Q&A with the designer and find out:

Q: What inspired you to launch LAGOS? A: I wanted to create a brand centered around jewelry as an art form, and that’s exactly what LAGOS is. It’s design-focused yet timeless and elegant, like fine jewelry should be. I also wanted to create a brand of jewelry that women could buy for themselves to celebrate their own vision of femininity and modernism. I want to empower women to create their signature style – jewelry that is not just for events or occasions but jewelry that would become indispensable. Q: You speak about the LAGOS woman. Who is she? A: She is strong and independent, yet feminine and alluring. She represents the complexity and sophistication that make women so beautiful and inspiring to me. She is well traveled, particular in her tastes and has a deep intrinsic love for beautiful objects and jewelry. Q: What inspires you? A: The sights and sounds of the world. My travels throughout Asia and Europe. And there are people I meet daily. Iconic women of our time. Inspiration is a flow of energy, it’s hard to predict. I don’t sit in front of a beautiful view and suddenly have a vision for a new collection. Sometimes inspiration can come from something unknowing or a challenge in my daily routine. Most of all I am inspired by the LAGOS woman. The customer who has been wearing LAGOS for years and the woman who does not know the brand yet – I like to think about both – how I can surprise them & help them be even more beautiful and confident than they already are. 27

e c i v r e S Over the past 35 years, Forsythe has assembled a team of artists and artisans, our

own

band

of

“Service

Superheroes” who are ready and willing to step up and save the day. One special superhero is our bench jeweler Charlie Mehlinger. Here is his story written fondly, by Debbie Berling. Forsythe’s bench jeweler is Charlie Mehlinger

What is it about our bench jeweler, Charlie Mehlinger that reminds me of Bruce Willis in the Die Hard movies? It could be his good looks, but I think it’s his spirit. He has the heart of a hero. Let me explain. One summer evening when he was preparing to turn in for the night, Charlie heard a car crash in front of his house. He ran outside to see the wreck and noticed one man run from the car. Then he noticed another man trapped inside it, and worse, he smelled smoke and realized the car was on fire. He ran to the car and rescued the guy trapped inside, not thinking of the possible danger to himself. Charlie brings that same heroism to the service he provides for Forsythe Jewelers. We don’t have car crashes in the store, of course, but we do have “emotional emergencies.” For example, a young man forgets it’s his anniversary. He rushes to Forsythe to buy the ring his wife has been wishing for, but finds it’s the wrong finger size. Charlie to the rescue! He drops whatever he’s doing to size that ring and make sure the young man’s anniversary ends happily ever after.

28

It’s his “can do” attitude that makes Charlie such a valued member of the Forsythe “family.” He allows us to offer expert, prompt jewelry repair and restoration services. In short, he makes us look good because all his work is top quality. His diamond setting, repairs and restorations are perfect, and here’s why: “My grandfather, my father, my uncle – they were all in the jewelry business,” explains Charlie. “When I was just out of high school, my father suggested I learn the trade. He sent me to North Bennett Street Industrial School in Boston. It’s the oldest trade school in America. I loved every minute of the two and a half years I spent there. But my real education began after I graduated. I got an apprenticeship with two diamond setters in downtown Boston who treated me like a son. They were very tough on me because I came out of trade school thinking I knew it all. But they were my best teachers. They would only accept perfection. I would never be where I am today without their guidance.” “Where he is today” is at the top of his game. With 36 years of bench experience he says, “I can’t imagine doing anything else in my life. I get great satisfaction working out the mechanics of really challenging repairs or jewelry restorations. I’ll admit I’m more of an engineer than a designer…but my “engineering” is top quality after all these years.” We couldn’t agree more. When he’s not at his jewelers bench, Charlie enjoys being outdoors cycling and kayaking. He also finds time to give back to the community. He participated in the Kayak for Charity event to raise money for Volunteers in Medicine, bicycles in the Ride for Kids to support the Boys & Girls Club, and he offers free jewelry repairs and restorations to the St. Francis Thrift Shop. Now you know why Charlie Mehlinger is more to us than just a jeweler. He’s our hero!

A life worth living. Gurhan is internationally renowned for pioneering the revival of pure 24K gold jewelry and for changing the landscape of jewelry design with his awardwinning creations. But Gurhan is much more than that… and so is the brand that he has created. He is a larger-than-life personality whose eclectic tastes have forged a brand which is known for its diverse and rich expressions of a life worth living. Gurhan’s initial creations in pure gold quickly drew attention from discerning collectors in Istanbul and travelers to Turkey. An early admirer was an Australian woman living in New York and on vacation in Turkey. She fell in love with his jewelry first, and then she fell in love with him. From the first moment it was evident that Fiona was Gurhan’s soul mate. Together they built a life of adventure and variety which continues to fuel Gurhan’s inspiration for his designs. Fiona Tilley, now his wife, is today president and CEO of their company. Together they have created a wonderfully successful brand which is the center of their life together—a life worth living.

Stacking

As many of you know, “stacking”, or layering jewelry is one of the hottest trends in the industry. When it comes to stacking, it is important to remember this very important rule…THERE AREN’T ANY RULES! You can stack just about any types of metals, materials, shapes and styles together…in fact; stacking is one of the best ways to express your personal style and channel your inner fashionista. Additionally, layering is a great way to mix some of your older pieces with one or two of this season’s newest looks. Just as a brand new pair of shoes can completely update your old dress, a brand new bracelet can breathe new life into your favorite bangle you’ve had since high school. We spent a fun afternoon pairing different designers and collections to give you some inspiration. Start stacking!

Varying Textures When these four bracelets are stacked together, they beautifully combine rich texture and metals in a way that just “works”. The two heavier pieces perfectly frame the softer, beaded layers inside - a bit sophistication and whimsy all in one.

Sparkle Stack Diamonds can STACK with ANYTHING! We kept the color of the metals the same and the diamonds, which flank the threepiece stack, bring everything together.

32

Fancy Fingers Stacking rings is really in. Here we stacked a combination of different stones and designs. The three rings each have individual stories to tell, however, they beautifully combine into one gorgeous masterpiece.

Golden Goddess We paired three gold necklaces, two with diamonds and colored stones. The diamond encrusted black onyx pendant draws the eye into focus among the gorgeous flurry of gold and jewels.

Longer Layers Here we took three separate necklaces, all in the same color family but with varying lengths and textures. We arranged them to fill and elongate the neck and made sure that they complement one another, not compete.

Extraordinary Designs from an Extraordinary Place

A Postcard from Aurora 34

Forsythe Jewelers traveled to Aurora, NY, the home of MacKenzie-Childs, to preview the new collections and tour the grounds. Beautifully situated on a 6.5acre former dairy farm overlooking Cayuga Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, the grounds house the production studio, a Second-Empire Farmhouse that serves as a showhouse, and a retail shop filled with tableware, home furnishings and gifts. Soon after acquiring the farm, MacKenzie-Childs turned the dairy barn into a working production studio where today handmade, hand decorated majolica pottery, furniture and home furnishings are crafted. The production studio, home of over 100 on site artisans, houses areas devoted to design, clay molding, firing, painting, furniture making and upholstery.

The picturesque farm is also home to a small herd of Scottish Highland cattle, dozens of birds roosting in the Gothic-Revival-style Chicken Palace, a duck pond, a former Cornell horse barn, a 1930’s greenhouse, spectacular and ever-changing gardens, and plenty of hay fields.
