LATROBE Valley police, Tyers Primary School staff and parents are pleading with motorists to slow down amid fears that children using the school crossing are in danger. Police will install a speed camera at the crossing and station a police car at the site to deter motorists from speeding through the crossing

and endangering life. Parents have reported having to pull their children to safety with “a fair few near misses”. Morwell Police Sergeant Clint Wilson said traffic had increased through the back roads of Yallourn North and Tyers since the closure of the Princes Fwy. “Heavy vehicles now use this route as a detour and

there is a lot of speeding. There have now been changes to the speed limits from Vic Roads in Tyers. The traffic flow makes it difficult for residents to enter and exit their driveways as well,” Sgt Wilson said. “We want people to please be aware there have been some near misses with kids stepping out onto the crossing and cars are not stopping.”

Lee-Anne Broeren works at the primary school and also has two children attending the school, one of whom is confined to a wheelchair. She says she now tries to avoid using the crossing. “I try and avoid it when I can. The kids know they have to stop and wait but the people (in cars) don’t stop. We have a fair few near misses,” she said. “No-one sits on the speed

limit, they are using it as a freeway. They are not reading the signs or noticing the flags.” Debbie Hornsby has one child attending the Tyers Primary School and two other children who accompany her to the school via the crossing every day. Last week she had to pull her three children off the crossing to the footpath. “We have had a few problems

but last week was worse than normal. Normally on a crossing, cars slow down but this guy was going far too fast and kept it up,” Ms Hornsby said. “I have even noticed with reversing out of my driveway. I am going to have to reverse on my grass to turn my car around to get out of the driveway from now on. Continued on P2

Hardware burglary TWO chainsaws and power tools worth more than $1,800 were stolen from a hardware store on George St in Moe on Saturday, April 23. The burglary took place at about 2.20am. Police said the offender forced open the sliding door of the store and managed to escape with the tools despite having activated the store’s alarm system.

Motorbike angst AN UNLICENSED rider – a 21-year-old woman - who was also riding an unregistered vehicle fell from her motorbike and broke her arm at 12.30pm on Saturday, April 30. Sergeant Clint Wilson, the Latrobe Highway Patrol officer in charge, voiced his and his colleagues’ frustration at the number of offences occurring on a regular basis, with unregistered motorbikes or bikes being ridden in areas where they shouldn’t be. “This is a major problem for us and we have been battling it for a long time - 30% of road trauma is motorbike riding where they shouldn’t be riding and (being) unregistered,” Sgt Wilson said.

Operation Austran POLICE this week kicked off Operation Austran, an annual campaign with heavy vehicles as its focus. The campaign targets drug use, fatigue and driving offences and is conducted throughout Victoria. Sergeant Clint Wilson had a positive outlook when talking about the behaviour of local truck drivers. “Historically in this area, we do fairly well in keeping heavy vehicle incidences down. Our focus will be local carriers and truck drivers carrying on and doing what they are doing. We enjoy the very good cooperation with them (truck drivers) here in the Latrobe Valley,” he said.

Cricket club theft ‘disappointing’

and

LATROBE Cricket Club was broken into last Tuesday night, (April 26), with almost $8,000 of property stolen, including a ute and three sets of pitch covers.

Club president Anthony Bloomfield said the theft occurred last Tuesday night, with the ute stolen from the club’s shed and dumped at the back of Morwell after being set on fire.

Mr Bloomfield told the Voice that the quote given to the club to replace the covers, paired with the value of the ute was quite large. “We got a quote to replace our three covers with two, which will cost around $4,200, and the ute itself is worth around $3,000. We now need to go out and find something else to transport the covers,” he said. Mr Bloomfield said the theft was a real disappointment. “The one thing that really frustrates me, we don’t charge our e out at th juniors to play as we ft burnt le s a w want to make the ▪ The ute orwell. sport accessible to as back of M “ W e many as we can, so something hope that someone like this makes it really hard to out there may have seen the continue offering the ability for covers and could notify us kids to play for free,” he said. “We also have two or three where they might be,” he said.

Morwell drugs bust yields four arrests By Tristan O’Kane

tristan.o@lvvoice.com.au

POLICE have said that last Friday’s dramatic drug bust is part of an ongoing operation to combat drug manufacturing in the Valley. Four Morwell men were arrested at the Merton Rush Hotel in Princes Drive last Friday, following an ongoing investigation by the Morwell Divisional Tasking Unit. Morwell Detective Senior Sergeant Dean Thomas explained: “It was a joint operation with detectives from Melbourne. The four men were arrested at The Merton Rush Hotel in Morwell.

It was a pre-cursor to materials being found to manufacture amphetamines in Melbourne.” Police allege two amphetaminemanufacturing laboratories were discovered in Braybrook and Sydenham on Friday, April 29. Police allege drugs, cash and a replica firearm were uncovered during the raids. As a result of the Morwell investigation, Operation Fusion, a Morwell man was remanded in custody on Friday, April 29. He appeared at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates court on the same day, according to Sergeant

Andrew Korybutiak from the Morwell Tasking Unit. Three other men from Morwell aged 30, 38 and 40 have been charged with trafficking amphetamines and been bailed by police to appear at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on July 12. Two men aged 50 and 54 were also arrested under Operation Slalom, the Melbourne side of the operation. Police said further arrests were expected. Police added that the Merton Rush Hotel was closed as a result of the arrests and would reopen at a later date.

Freeway reopening on the horizon WORK on the Princes Fwy is progressing well, with bore holes and drainage the main focus. According to Superintendent Geoff Newby, International Power Hazelwood (IPH) has completed the horizontal drain holes at the base of the mine as per the original plan. “They are about to commence drilling additional holes with a further 10 to the east and 15 to the west of the original area,” he said. Engineering firm GHD has put together an updated proposal for solution of the main drainage problem, which has been sent to VicRoads, Latrobe City Council and International Power for comment. “It is hoped that this will be finalised soon and then the specifications

provided. This is a critical part of the mitigation strategy, which will ensure the water flowing from the Morwell township is conveyed well away from the area of concern,” said Supt Newby. Professor Tim Sullivan, chairman of the Technical Review Board, has been constantly receiving and analysing data from VicRoads and IPH. He will be meeting with technical experts from VicRoads, Latrobe City and IPH to discuss long-term modeling for the stability in the area of concern. “This, together with the main drain solution, will form the basis of action to be undertaken to ensure the area is stabilised sufficiently. We can then look towards reopening the freeway,” said Supt Newby.

Power plant Victoria Coldry project blowout ‘no receives initial funding surprise’ By Bryce Campbell

bryce.campbell@lvvoice.com.au

TINCOM has officially started proceedings on the Victoria Coldry coal dewatering plant by providing the initial cash funding of $500,000. The plant is a joint project between Vietnamese company TinCom and Environmental Clean Technologies (ECT). The plans are to construct a $300 million coal dewatering plant at Loy Yang Power in 2012. As part of an agreement signed on April 4, TinCom was to provide $1.5 million to Victoria Coldry, the joint venture company, for the detailed design phase of the project by May 30. ECT chief executive Kos Galtos highlighted the importance of the deposit, enabling commencement of external engineering work. “This is another important step in the project with our aim to have the design for tender completed by November,” he said. TinCom chairman Thang Van Luong said he was pleased to get the project underway. “We are pleased to take this important step in the Victoria Coldry project with ECT as it represents a venture of national significance to Vietnam by helping balance energy security and environmental responsibility,” he said. Victoria Coldry’s project engineer is set to complete a final review of the scope of works

proposed by international engineering firm Arup before a contract is signed by May 30 to begin work on the detailed design phase.

$300m investment Hundreds of jobs to be created

By Bryce Campbell

bryce.campbell@lvvoice.com.au

A $300 million investment in groundbreaking coal dewatering technology is set to generate up to a thousand jobs for the Valley. The first stage of a black coal equivalent (BCE) plant at Loy Yang Power is due to begin by December 2012. The project is a joint venture agreement between Environmental Clean Technologies (ECT) and Vietnamese investment company

TinCom. The company running the project will be entitled Victoria Coldry. It’s set to construct a two million tonne per annum BCE production plant, with plans to expand to 20 million tonnes per annum in the next 10 years. The plant will utilise Loy Yang Power coal supply, site and services, and will dewater brown coal from the Loy Yang mine, reducing moisture content from 60 per cent to less than 12 per cent. ECT operations manager Adam

Giles said: “Initially, there’ll be a couple of hundred jobs in the construction stage, plus around 100 direct jobs and a couple hundred indirect jobs once it’s completed. “Assuming we get to our 20 million tonnes a year goal, I can definitely see job numbers getting up to the thousand mark,” he said. The joint agreement, signed on Monday (April 4), outlines that TinCom will provide $1.5 million by May 30 for the detailed design phase. ECT will then tailor its design to integrate with Loy Yang Power’s systems and site.

“After the design phase is completed, we’ll be able to put out tender documents. These will give us an accurate price of the plant. Our target to have finance in place and start putting shovels in the dirt is December 2012,” said Mr Giles. Mr Giles said the project had been an arduous task, but was delighted with the outcome. “High cost and long lead time projects like this are very complex, and it can be difficult to work across cultures and borders, but we’re very happy with our Vietnam partner’s

Figures rocket from $750m to $1.2bn

STOP HRL – the group campaigning against the proposed HRL coal to gas power plant for the Valley – says the project’s recent cost blowout comes as no surprise. “Like other so-called ‘clean coal’ projects that have been proposed but never materialised, it appears that this project may fall over of its own accord,” said Shaun Murray of Stop HRL. “We’re still committed to vigorously opposing it, as we don’t want to see the government prop up another costly white elephant.” Figurres revealed to the public last week, showed the cost of HRL’s proposed plant skyrocketing from $750 million to around $1.2 billion. Charlie Speirs, director of Clean Coal Victoria, says that there is more to it. “The original proposal by HRL was for a 400MW station at $750 million, resulting in an installed cost of $1,875 per kilowatt. Compare this to the current proposal of 600MW at a cost approaching $1.2 billion, and the installed cost is less than $2,000 per kilowatt,” Mr Speirs said. “This is a remarkable effort given the escalation in power station costs over the past six years, due to some very clever and innovative design modifications by HRL. In real terms the cost has come down.” Mr Speirs also pointed out that the plant is the next step towards better use of brown coal. “We know that we need to improve the efficiency of plants and HRL’s technology results in emissions half that of the oldest plant in the Valley,” he said. Both Mr Murray and Mr Speirs agreed that there needed to be further development into new technologies. “Energy efficiency and renewable energy manufacturing are clearly the way forward for Victoria, and if we invested money into these commercially-proven industries, then we could deliver real employment alternatives and a secure energy future for Victoria,” Mr Murray said. “Victoria has enjoyed low-cost energy for the last 90 years, and this has underpinned the economic development of the state. For this to continue, technologies such as the HRL gasification process must be encouraged,” Mr Speirs said.

YARRAGON roads, closed due to landslips as a result of severe flooding during March, will remain off-limits to motorists indefinitely. Baw Baw Shire mayor Diane Blackwood said it was unclear how long it would take to carry out vital repairs on the YarragonLeongatha Rd and the ChildersSettlement Rd. “Safety audits and geotechnical surveys have been undertaken on all the landslips so that we can find out the extent of the damage beneath the road surface, and a report is expected by the end of May,” she said. Until the council has that report, there is no way to estimate when the roads will be reopened, nor how long it will take to repair,

she said. “The council understand that the road closures are causing inconvenience for affected residents, not only those who have to find alternative routes but those living on roads being used as detours,” she said. “Community safety must be our first priority.” The roads were closed after torrential rain on March 22 caused landslips on local roads and surrounding land. “There are a few figures flying around about this being a one in 500 year storm event, and unfortunately there was nothing we could do to avoid the landslips happening,” she said.

▪ Allambee-Childers Rd suffered a bad landslip just near the severe Childers Settlement Rd slip.

Businesses warned over scam GIPPSLAND small businesses are being warned over bogus websites offering access to government grants. Gippsland MHR Darren Chester said unauthorised websites offering assistance to obtain government grants were becoming increasingly common. “I’m concerned that some small businesses are being lured to websites in search of government grants to help further establish their business,” Mr Chester said. “Whilst some websites may look

the real deal they’re only out to cash in on unsuspecting users.“ Anyone who uses an unauthorised website is risking their private information and in some cases also being charged just to gain access to the website. “It’s very important that if you are looking for government grants, only authorised websites can offer the appropriate assistance and these can easily be identified by the well known .gov.au extension. “Anybody who identifies an unauthorised website or receives

unsolicited phone calls or emails offering government assistance or attempting to obtain personal information such as banking or credit card details should report it to Scam Watch.” You can contact Scam Watch by logging on to www.scamwatch.gov. au or calling 1300 795 995. Official information about grants is freely available to the public in a readily searchable form at www. grantslink.gov.au or via www. business.gov.au.

The petition will be presented to our local MP, Mr Russell Northe. It is anticipated that the Parliament will refer the matter to the Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Jeanette Powell. Traralgon now has a fighting chance, thanks to all of you!

The ladies of the TNLH got together to celebrate the pomp and ceremony of the royal wedding in style.

WHILE William and Kate were tying the knot in England last Friday, Traralgon’s Neighbourhood Learning House had its very own celebration. With pink tiaras and jewelery galore, the ladies of the TNLH got together to celebrate the pomp and ceremony of the royal wedding in style. Jenny Poon of TNLH came dressed for the occasion, sporting a replica of Diana’s – and now Kate’s – engagement ring, keen to enjoy the day.

On hand for the celebrations were Morwell MLA Russell Northe and Eastern Victoria MLC Peter Hall, donning a tiara and enjoying the plentiful scones, pastries and treats provided by the TNLH. The celebrations were at their fullest with Jenny and Russell acting the parts of Kate and William, cutting the wedding cake as newlyweds. “This is probably one of the few times I’ll get to have a young handsome man by my side, so I’d better make sure we have some

good photos,” said Jenny. Deputy mayor Sharon Gibson and Cr Sandy Kam were also at the event, enjoying a chance to take part in a little pomp and ceremony in Traralgon. Jenny said she was glad so many had shown up for the party, with balloons and decorations transforming the TNLH, but hoped there wouldn’t be a follow up. “Hopefully we only have this wedding party, and not a divorce party in the future,” she said.

Family violence increase By Niall Boyle

niall.boyle@lvvoice.com.au

QUANTUM Support Services has revealed that it has experienced an increase in numbers of women seeking family violence support. Client services manager Narie Anderson says that additional calls to the service’s crisis hotline may be due to increased awareness, not a greater incidence of violence in the home. In the period from July to December 2010, the Morwell-based service worked closely with 98 women, while a total of 715 contacted

the support group. Ms Anderson said: “We’re witnessing an increased amount of calls over the last three years or so. “We hope that incidents aren’t increasing, but that more women are aware of the options open to them and seeking advice. “An integrated approach, together with police and courts, show the system is working.” Ms Anderson said that 181 children had been exposed to violence in the home, a figure that is increasingly

worrying Quantum. “A lot of women stay in violent relationships for the sake of the children, because they want to keep their family together. The impact on children isn’t always considered,” she said. “They’re bearing seeing the two people in confrontation and this can have huge consequences. But current resources are already stretched.” Ms Anderson urged any women in harmful relationships to pick up the phone and give Quantum a call.

“A lot of women aren’t ready to tear their families apart – but when they see the impact violence is having on their children they have to. Women should make contact, see what support is available – and talk to someone.” Quantum also serves Wellington and Baw Baw Shires and can be contacted on 1800 243 455. Men affected by domestic violence are urged to get in touch with Latrobe Community Health by free calling 1800 242 696.

niall.boyle@lvvoice.com.au

THE Royal Exchange Hotel (REH) Cork Club continued a proud tradition by topping the fundraising pile in Victoria for the Good Friday Appeal – for the sixth year running. The Cork Club beat competition from the Retreat Hotel, Brunswick, to claim top spot. It raked in $78,012 – just shy of its $80k target. This was also the 28th consecutive time the club earned the title of top country (non-metro) fundraiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The total amount raised was tallied after a year of dedicated fundraising, including several raffles, monthly markets at Kay St, family fun days and BBQs. The year culminated in the roadside appeal over the Easter weekend – which saw generous motorists give around $15,000 in two days. President Roy Arnold congratulated everyone that helped the club raise its total. He told the Voice: “There’s a real sense of community spirit with the Cork Club, even though we’ve got a small committee. A lot of people get involved and there’s a sense of ownership and pride in the area for people participating.” With this year’s title in the bag, Mr

Arnold says that the hard work begins now for the club’s 2012 effort. He called for any volunteers interested to do their bit and help out. “This year’s total was a bit down on our estimate, and I suppose that’s disappointing – a few more volunteers would’ve been nice. We were a bit short at the traffic lights this year. We’re holding our AGM on May 30 and it would be nice to see a few new faces.” Mr Arnold also praised the efforts of Max Williams, a veteran fundraiser of over 20 years. “Max has been brilliant since I’ve been involved with the club. He helped to sort out catering, organised volunteers at the lights, and phoning through our totals to the Good Friday Appeal,” he added.

▪ LVBL drivers have initiated a safety program aiming to protect children from speeding drivers..JPG

DRIVERS who speed up when they see a school bus stop or buses trying to merge will be targeted in a new program designed to improve safety for school children. The Latrobe Valley School Bus Safety Program was initiated to educate motorists to drive more carefully around school buses. It comes after statistics collected by Latrobe Valley Bus Lines (LVBL) drivers found that, rather than slowing down, 62% of drivers speed up when approaching bus stops or buses trying to merge into traffic. LVBL along with BusVic and the State

Government developed the program with the aim of changing driver behaviour. Morwell MLA Russell Northe said he thought the program would have great success. “The message is pretty simple I think, drivers just need to slow down,” he said. “I like how proactive the message is, it’s getting out there before anything dramatic happens.” Drivers and staff from LVBL, BusVic representatives, VicRoads representatives, RoadSafe representatives, Mr Northe and and Latrobe City councillor Sandy Kam were at VicRoads in Traralgon on Thursday last week to officially launch the program.

Ros cooks up a storm GIVING back to the Traralgon Neighbourhood Learning House (TNLH) has always been a goal for Ros Young, and now - with some help she has done just that. ‘The Best Little Book of Budget Cooking’, officially launched on Friday last week, is Ros’s big triumph, bringing together recipes from the cooking class she runs at the house. Ros wanted to thank

Jenny Poon of TNLH, as well as all the people who helped contribute to the creation of the book. “TNLH has helped me get over some huge hurdles since I joined, so my way of thanking them was making this cookbook, with all the proceeds going to the Neighbourhood House,” she said. “We have successfully cooked all the recipes here in

the class, they’re not difficult to cook. I hope everyone buys a copy, as it helps Neighbourhood House do such a wonderful job.” Eastern Victoria MLC Peter Hall was on hand to help launch the book, telling those in attendance that being a cooking buff he had already purchased a copy. “I must say though Ros, there’s an ingredient missing from my favourite recipe, the

risotto. You need a glass and a half of red wine for during preparation,” joked Mr Hall. “On a more serious note, the thing to take away from this launch is how important Neighbourhood House is and the opportunities that it offers. “It is all about being able to participate locally. There’s been fantastic support from all, this is really the fruits of Neighbourhood House’s

efforts, it’s an absolute credit to Ros,” he said. Ros said after the event that she was incredibly happy with the book being printed. “It feels absolutely brilliant. The book turned out bigger than I ever expected, because all the Neighbourhood House ladies got together to make it bigger, it really is a great feeling,” she said.

Paper mache magic

▪ Monique enjoyed the paper mache.

▪ Chelsea shows off her paper mache.

▪ Archie with his piece.

BALLOONS and soggy paper were transformed into crazy and cute paper mache creatures at Tyers Primary School recently. Several sessions were spent putting the paper mache carefully onto a balloon. Once the paper mache had dried and become hard it had to have several coats of paint. The final art session was spent attaching a variety of different items to make a creature. The Prep/1/2 children completed their pieces of work

and proudly displayed them at the school assembly on the last day of term. The 3/4/5/6 children will complete their pieces of art during term two. Art teacher Lisa Driver was impressed with the creativity of the younger children when completing their creatures. “They used a lot of different craft items and recycled lots of bottle tops. They were extremely proud of their work and wanted to be able to show the rest of the school and parents at assembly what they had made,” she said.

Ten pin bowling for all abilities

▪ The Morwell Happy Acheivers with their new uniforms. THE Morwell Happy Achievers has been excitedly awaiting new uniforms for the past few weeks and at last they have arrived. The 10-pin bowling team was formed around 30 years ago and the group now consists of up to 36 bowlers with various levels of disability. Janice Rowley became involved 25 years ago when her 15-year-old

daughter Dianne was looking for a sport to suit her ability and needs. Dianne was born with Williams Syndrome (WS), a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone. It is characterised by medical problems, developmental delays and learning difficulties. Janice Rowley found that competitive sports such as netball

were really too competitive and non-inclusive when it came to her daughter. “Bowling has helped her to enjoy sport. Prior to that, she wasn’t really accepted. With this sport, they are playing for themselves so they don’t have to be the best. With netball, she couldn’t achieve the best results so she didn’t get a game,” Ms Rowley said. The group meets every Saturday except for grand final day and Easter Saturday. The parents are the ones who organise the games and any presentations that take place. The cost is $10 each week and anyone with a disability is welcome to have a go. The age ranges from early teens to mid 50s. Presentations are held in July and at the end of the year. Everyone is recognised for their efforts, there are no firsts and no lasts. So what do the parents gain from their children bowling each week? “Seeing my daughter enjoy a sport.

Clinics fast-forward drug treatments PEOPLE seeking treatment for drug dependency and mental health issues are waiting just one day or less – instead of five weeks, as it was previously – under a system of walkin treatment clinics being run by the Latrobe Community Health Service. The new system has resulted in increased numbers of people seeking assistance for drug, alcohol and mental health issues, as well as a greater likelihood of clients making and keeping follow-on appointments. LCHS acting manager for drug treatment services Jenny Svoboda said the number of missed appointments fell from 32 per month to 11 six

May 4 2011

months later. The Fast Forward walk-in clinics offer a non-judgemental service for people with drug, alcohol or mental health issues, or for those who have a dual diagnosis, which is a dependency on a substance that stems from mental health issues they may be facing. “Prior to 2010 it used to take up to five weeks (to respond to someone in need), now it is the same or next day,” Ms Svoboda said. “We have two workers working on the days we are open and sometimes a nurse. We ask what their goals are and, say they want to detox, we would help them to organise this. If

a nurse is not available, we can make an appointment to see a nurse. They leave (the clinic) with an outcome.” Dr John O’Donoghue from the Moe Medical Centre agreed that the clinics were a positive: “It’s better for the clients to get in and see someone immediately, not later on, it makes a big difference.”

facebook.com/lvvoice1

It used to rip out my heart when she didn’t get a game. Being last is just as important as being first,” Ms Rowley said. The Happy Achievers meet every Saturday at the Morwell Ten Pin Bowling Club on Chickerell St at 2pm. Contact Janice Rowley on 5134 2375 for more information.

Baringa students have a ball RECENTLY, the Moe Apex Club held its first debutante ball, at the Moe Town Hall, with students from Baringa School the stars of the show. Each week the students attended dance lessons and - with the help of dance teacher Maria Bruzzese and

Chris Ahuriri - the debutantes and their partners each learnt two dances for their special night. The students arrived in chauffeur-driven limousines and hot rods, which were organised by the school. The couples were

presented to the officials for the evening, before they began their dances. After their dancing, each debutante and partner were presented with a special gift from the Moe Apex Club. The Baringa principal and teachers were extremely

THE recent Gippsland Country Music Awards were a hit, according to the organisers. So much so, that they exceeded the expected

attendance numbers. Wilma Livingston, one of the organisers of the event said: “It was a sensational day! People from all over Gippsland came. Denise Drysdale (MC and television personality) was wonderful. Tim Ryan, from Truckin with Tim fame, helped with the announcing and was great. Hall of Fame inductees were Ken Forster, Colleen Honeyman and Lindsay Hammond. Winner for best male vocalist was Ron Bartlett from Drouin. Best female vocalist

was Emma Jane Montgomery from Bunyip and best songwriter went to Maria Harkins from Hazelwood North. The junior vocalist category was picked up by Taylor Ralls from Moe. The awards were established by Karl Mohr, who saw a need to highlight the profile of all of Gippsland’s talent. Mr Mohr told the Voice: “Everyone had a wonderful time and are keen to do it again next year. It will go ahead next year and we are looking for sponsors.”

▪ The story of Jesus, as portrayed by St Mary’s pupils Jackson (Jesus), Bradley, Alex and Hayden.

GRADE six students at St Mary’s School in Newborough recently planned and led a community liturgy as part of the school’s Holy Week celebrations. Principal Teresa Greenough said the school’s mission was to help the children know Jesus Christ. “The grade six children were able to do this by appropriately presenting the story of the last week of Jesus’s life,” she said. Trish Mulqueen, the

school’s religious education coordinator, said the children were honoured to lead the community in prayer at Easter. “We hoped that through our dramatisation people would be able to realise the significance of this important story and be able to relate it to our lives today,” she said. The children presented a series of still human photographs and the impact was both dramatic and reverent.

If you have a question for Sam email cherry.prior@lvvoice.com.au

MY wife is half way pregnant with all well (fingers crossed). I never realised what a minefield it is having kids. In my ignorance I thought the Dad has a pretty easy role, Mum has a bit more work to do (obviously) and out comes a fishing/golfing companion who looks forward to balancing an AFL career with a university degree with honours. This is a bloody minefield! Now, out come all the stories that I never heard about previously regarding increased risk and complications galore. I have heard plenty of mates say the old “10 fingers and 10 toes and I’ll be happy” and now I know exactly why they say that.

If we get a baby with 10 of each I will be relieved and extremely grateful. Then I will get the next round of stories - surely there are no more minefields ahead over the next 18 years? So what will I pass on to my kids? How does this relate to fitness? We are all familiar with the word “gene” and “genetics”. We are now using the excuse “it’s just my genes”, “I lost the genetic lottery”, or as Danny DeVito put it in the movie Twins “I got the leftovers”. But pretty soon you will also be talking about epigenetics, which will downgrade these excuses from valid to cop out. Your genetic makeup is the

Camellias for colour

AS the days get cooler and shorter things can begin to look a little bleak. Why not get some colour back in to the garden to brighten up those winter days! The camellia is the perfect plant to liven up your garden through the colder months. You will see this plant in many Australian gardens bringing a burst of colour with its winter bloom. Three varieties to keep an eye out for are the Camellia

japonica, Camellia sasanqua and Camellia reticulata. The Camellia japonica is one of Australia’s favourites. This variety comes in an enormous range of sizes and colours, the flowers may be single, double, fimbriate or variegated. Be sure to ask about this plant next time you visit your local nursery. The Camellia sasanqua is known for its compact features. This popular variety can be used for hedging or topiary, planted in

same in every cell in your body, which is why a hair sample is as good as a blood sample. But what controls the genes? And how is it that identical twins – with exactly the same genetic makeup – can behave so differently? The answer lies with what is known as the epigenome, which activates and suppresses the genes. Chemicals, known as epigenetic tags are responsible for this. These chemicals are dependant on your environment. The most powerful tags affecting your genes come from diet, toxins, levels of stress and exercise. Some of these tags are discarded in the baby-making tubs or left to grow into a large bush. The flowers, in pink, white and red, sit flat on the stem and show off the rich gold-coloured stamens in the centre. While sasanqua blooms are shortlived the plant will produce an abundance of flowers from late autumn right through the winter months, ensuring a brilliant show of colour. The Camellia reticulata is a real beauty and produces the largest flower of all camellia varieties. The flowers are often pink or red but can take on a blue hue with age. Once you spot this beautiful plant you will definitely want one of your own. With a little love, good covering of mulch and water you will have a spectacular centrepiece for your garden. Happy gardening.

process, but some are imprinted and continue on to the next generation. This brings us to something we used to have before all this science – common sense. We all know vegetables are good. We all know too that you are what you do and you are what you eat. If this theory of epigenetics stands, you are what your parents ate too. For more information look up the BBC documentary “Ghost in Your Genes”. Questions: If you have any questions for Sam about fitness and conditioning, please forward to cherry.prior@ lvvoice.com.au

Angry as a delayed motorist

ON a recent flight from Melbourne to Singapore I heard a South African man talking to an Englishman (this sounds like the start of a joke, but I promise it isn’t). The South African fella was telling the Englishmen about his stay in our fantastic country. He explained to the Pom: “Australians are an amazing bunch, they’re so relaxed, nothing phases them. The only thing they have to worry about on a day-to-day basis is what

they’re going to have for dinner!” Now although that seemed quite a simplistic and not entirely factual observation, we are well known as a pretty chilled-out nation...generally. There is one environment, however, in which a regular, easy-going Australian, turns into an angry tyrant. As highlighted by English comedian Jeff Green recently: “Australians are the most easy going, carefree people in the world...until they get behind the wheel.” And he’s spot on! Pop on a seatbelt and our

“she’ll be right mate” attitude, transforms into “she better be in the left lane because she’s turning right, mate”. I’m not just pointing the finger either. I do it too and I can’t work out why! If you or I were held up by someone on the road for 30 seconds, even Charlie Sheen would be shocked by our language. But if you were held up for 30 seconds while walking in the street, no problems! What is it about driving that makes us so mean, so impatient. Instead of our ‘Happy Place’ the interior of our daily transport is for many our ‘Angry Place’. It’s

only been getting worse of late, with the closure of the Princes Fwy at Morwell and lowered speed limits on surrounding roads. So what do we do, how can we become more patient behind the wheel. Maybe regular excursions to the Monash Fwy during peak hour will make us realise that the traffic’s not that bad in the Valley. That and my mum’s remedy, take a big...deep...breath. I certainly hope that helps, because the burning incense and music from Enya in my Commodore is making me angrier.

Roll on winter By Cherry Prior

cherry.prior@lvvoice.com.au

BY all accounts I should be feeling dread and horror as winter approaches. It’s just a month off, and I can feel its icy fingers stroking my back when I dive out of bed in the morning. I can already smell the wood smoke on the air when I arrive home in the evening. I know too well the lethargy of the long, wet, cold, dark months ahead. But, the closer it gets, the more I want to rejoice. My reasons are two-fold. The first is that in winter you get to wear tights and winter boots (put them on your shopping list right away people). Now I am sure that the pleasure of this is lost on the majority of half the population – even the more open-minded of our metrosexual friends won’t get it. But girls, are we united on this one? Tights are where we can herald our rebelliousness and eccentricities and zest for life, but all couched in the usual context of conservatism and fashionable conformity. Oh, and – running a distant third, of course - comfort. Picture this: a woman, a professional type, dressed in layers of the customary black (or new black, as the case may be) that is the winter uniform. She looks sharp, she looks business like, she looks... like everyone else. Then, just below the hemline, just above the top of her warm, sensible winter boots, you see a pair of tartan tights. Oh Ms, you might have your uniform on, but by this one little expression of your character I know you are freespirited and original in thought. I know you are interesting and mischievous. Hell, I bet you’re such a rebel you drink your milk straight from the carton, don’t you? The second reason for wishing winter a speedy return is that I have heard that your body needs to work harder in winter just to maintain its temperature. Which means it burns more calories just to survive. Now I will admit that I am yet to uncover the scientific study authenticating this little gem, however, it sounds plausible. And I am prone to logic, especially if said logic meets my needs. It’s not that I want to lose weight and that winter will help my cause, it’s more that I like the thought of having to eat more just to keep warm. ‘Cause a real woman – not the airbrushed, stick insects you see on television, billboards or in magazines – likes to eat good, hearty, decent food. And, plenty of it. So roll on winter. And I for one hope we get sleet and hail and bracing winds and cloudless nights. If you need me you’ll find me rolling around in all the slush on my front lawn, wearing purple tights and eating a second helping of ice cream. Tips Shopping tips and tales for publication can be forwarded to Cherry at the above email address. Preference given to those accompanied by a wee dram of warming Irish whiskey.

STARS from Hawthorn Football Club came down to the Latrobe Valley last week to hold two clinics for local school kids. Students from Commercial Rd Primary, Churchill Primary, Yallourn North Primary, Lumen Christi Primary and Tobruk St Primary were given tips from players including Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin, Jarryd Roughhead and Shaun Burgoyne. The players gave kids clinics in handballing, tackling, marking and kicking with the school groups rotating through each activity before finishing with a Q&A session with the players. Gippsland Power coach and development manager Adam Dowie said the clinic, held thanks to Gippsland Power and the AFL,

was one of the best in the state. “We set up the activities for the players to run. In other places they give them the balls and let them run clinics however they want, but we provide our own equipment and organise the clinics,” he said. The clinics are part of the AFL’s development and promotion program, with each club running clinics throughout the season. Mr Dowie said that the program was part of the player’s obligation to give something back to the community. “The players are required to give something back to grassroots footy, but once they get out here they really get into it. Both the players and the kids love it, it’s a great opportunity for kids to meet the players and learn new things,” he said.

Moe cricketers reflect on a successful season MOE Cricket Club held its annual presentation night at Turfside Function Centre recently, using the occasion to celebrate its sixth straight CGCA first grade premiership as well as the CGCA third grade premiership. Club stalwart Matt Clarke, a member of the first-grade premiership side, became the first CGCA player in history to win eight first-grade flags. Clarke also capped off a fine season by winning his 16th first-grade bowling average trophy at Moe. Keeping it in the family, Clark’s son Nick took home the second-grade bowling average trophy. Perhaps the most prestigious award presented on the night went to Melinda

Kane, who took out the Terry Birch Memorial Award for Best Clubperson. This was a very deserving achievement following countless hours of work behind the scenes not only this season but over a number of years. The club is looking ahead with great anticipation to 2011/12 when it moves back to its home at Ted Summerton Reserve.

Redsox and Dodgers baseball bonanza TRARALGON Redsox dominated when it competed against the Sale Rangers, winning 13 home runs to two after blitzing it in the fourth innings of the weekend’s Latrobe Valley Baseball Association A grade division. Best for Traralgon was Luke Hornstra, Owen Godenzi and Linden Goodman. The Moe/Newborough V Morwell clash was a similarly one-sided affair, the Dodgers coming home with an 11 to nil victory. In B grade, Sale pulled out all the stops to beat a late-charging Redsox outfit, with the final score 15 to 11. The Dodgers were consistent and walked away easy winners against Morwell, with the final score 19 to 2. In C grade and U18s, Traralgon beat Sale while the Moe/Newborough C grade team sneaked in against Morwell. Churchill couldn’t match the strength of Traralgon in the U14s while Sale fell short in U10s.

▪ Tyers’ Luke Massaro pushes forward during his side’s defeat against Monash. MONASH Wolves overpowered Tyers Lightning in a high-scoring game, 8-1. The Wolves blitzed their opponents with Eric Sostak, Adrian Iacavou and Rayvel Whiting all scoring two goals before half time. After the break, Monash picked up right where it left off with Whiting scoring his third to make a hat trick and Coen Slaughter booting the eighth goal. Mark Pavich scored a consolation goal to salvage a bit of Tyers’ pride. The Falcons’ hopes of winning the league premiership are under threat after losing to Churchill United 2-1. The first half began with some fierce play by both sides as each club struggled to take the early advantage. Churchill had several opportunities but couldn’t convert, while the Falcons attacked through Graham Blaquierie. Just before half time, Churchill’s Jesse Kennedy broke through the offside trap before passing to Luke Cheney, who finished cleanly, for the opener. After the break, the match started at a blistering pace, with Churchill missing an almost-certain goal that resulted in a Falcons counter-attack. Mauro Deluca levelled the score at one apiece before Churchill hit back and managed to hold on for the win.

Traralgon City and Newborough Yallourn had a close battle with City emerging as the victors 1-0. It was a goalless first half with both teams unable to capitalise on their opportunities. As the match went on, it looked as if it would be a scoreless draw, but Mark Fairbrother broke the deadlock at 80 minutes with a cool finish. Newborough Yallourn desperately tried to respond, but ran out of time. Traralgon Olympians managed to defeat Moe United 2-1 in a closely fought game. Olympians opened the scoring in the ninth minute through George Fkiaris. Moe hit back after the restart, Matt Shearing converting from a deflected kick to equalise scores going into halftime. The second half was contested, with several good passages of play from both teams. In the 69th minute, Fkiaris broke through the tough defence to score his team’s second goal. Fortuna defeated Sale United 3-0 in a comfortable victory. Braydon Dunne scored Fortuna’s first goal in the 23rd minute after some quick play through the midfield. Fortuna continued to probe Sale’s defence, but was denied by a consistent defensive effort. Things picked up in the second half with goals from Kieran Coltman and Shaun Pickett.

SOCCER NOTES

IN the U16s soccer, Moe and Newborough played out an entertaining game, and despite playing well Moe lost 6-0. Newborough always looked the better side - it was just a matter of how long Moe’s defence could hold out. Newborough scored two goals to be two up at half time. In the second half Moe’s defence was once again under the pump and was lucky Josh Buckle in goals pulled off some great saves. With five minutes to go Newborough was 4-0 up. Newborough kept pushing while Moe was just trying to run out the game but in doing so it conceded two more goals to lose 6-0. The second division side played well also, but went down 2-1 to Olympians under lights on Saturday. The first half of the game was tough for both teams and the game was scoreless at half time. In the second half, Olympians got the better of Moe’s defence on two occasions before Moe found the back of the net with five minutes to go. Moe’s Scott West kicked his first senior goal in his first season of soccer. The reserves game between the sides saw a lot of attacking play in the first half, but neither side could hit the back of the net. In the second half Moe lost Reg Poxon for two yellow cards and had to play more than 30 minutes of the second half with 10 men. Late in the second half, substitute Charlie Vacca scored to seal the game for Olympians. In the seniors Moe also took on Olympians. The Olympians opened the scoring in the first half with a long-range shot. Moe then opened its account through Matt Shearing who ran into a deflected kick from the Olympians goalkeeper. The score stayed at 1-1 into the half time break. In the second half Moe had to make two changes due to injuries to Lee Dastey and Kayne Heusmann. The Olympians took advantage of this and scored to win 2-1.

Churchill Utd

CHURCHILL United got its soccer season back on track after defeating the Falcons on Saturday night 2-1 in front of a large home crowd at Hazelwood South Reserve. The Rams’ win means the Falcons, now trailing by three matches, will find it difficult to catch leaders Fortuna and Monash. The match marked the return of several key players for Churchill - Dean Pyle, Jesse Kennedy, captain Jamie Robson and keeper Jason Sands. Churchill had the better of the first half with a breakthrough goal by coach Luke Cheney in the 42nd minute. The second half started at a frenetic pace when Churchill failed to convert a seemingly certain goal at one end, then the Falcons immediately counter-attacked at the other leveling the scores. Churchill went about reinstating its lead and 10 minutes later it hit the back of the net again. However it was the Falcons who applied the heat and when Mauro Deluca headed goalward it was only the outstretched fingers of keeper Jason Sands who denied the Morwell club. Churchill held on for a well-earned victory. Best for Churchill were Cheney, Robson, Kennedy and Nathan Lugton. Best for Falcons Deluca, Blaquierie and Nick Stevens.

TRARALGON City continued its encouraging start to the 2011 Gippsland Soccer League season with a hard fought 1-0 win over Newborough/Yallourn on Sunday. In a tough first half, both sides created several chances, however neither side was able to break the deadlock. It wasn’t until the 80th minute when Mark Fairbrother finally broke down the stubborn Newborough/Yallourn defence to calmly put his shot past the keeper and give the home team their first win of the season. In the reserves Traralgon City went down 2-1 to Newborough/Yallourn with Nick Walsh scoring Traralgon’s goal. City had lots of possessions in the second half, but just couldn’t capitalise. In the second division, Traralgon City had a convincing 6-2 victory over Newborough/Yallourn. Graham Futter netted a hat-trick while Duncan Hanlon, Joe Groves and Warrick Palmer all got on the scoresheet. In the women’s match Traralgon City and Newborough/ Yallourn fought out a 0-0 draw. Jo Parr and Sam Cavanagh worked tirelessly for City in midfield. The defence was well marshalled by Jess Davidson and Mel Pugliese with Maryann Hili Bonello having a great game in goals. City’s next game is away to Churchill United on May 15.

for Bombers and Hawks THE clash between Morwell East and Yallourn/Yallourn North ended in a heart-breaking draw – both teams finishing with 81 points apiece - in Mid Gippsland football on Saturday. Though the lead changed several times in the final quarter, Yallourn/Yallourn North had the momentum in the finish but fell just short of victory. “It could have been worse, we could have lost - but it feels like a loss,” said Bombers coach Tony Price. “Just got to get back next week

I suppose,” said Hawks coach Chris Smogavec, who booted three goals and was among Morwell East’s best. The tight finishes are becoming a trend for the Bombers, which have gone down in three matches by less than seven points. But it’s not all bad news for the side. The visitors had two players make their senior football debuts. Among them Dale Walsh who is in just his fourth game of Aussie Rules Football, having made the transition from soccer. Hill End made it three in a

row for the first time in 27 years, upsetting Yarragon. The Hillmen started strongly and never looked back beating the Panthers by 11 points. Mirboo North dealt another of the competition’s big improvers, Newborough, a wakeup call, to the tune of 40 points. Tiger forward Tim Traill returned to form with four goals. The Bulldogs had the upper hand early, the Tigers were forced to fight back from behind to level scores at half time. It was all Mirboo North after the break, the home team kicking

nine goals to the visitors’ three. Yinnar has suffered its third straight loss at the hands of neighbour Boolarra. The Demons led all day to run out 29-point winners. Kenneth Towt was the toast of Boolarra, booting seven goals. Thys Stanistreet kicked four for the Magpies. And Trafalgar continued on its way with a 47-point victory over Thorpdale. The Blues were no match for the reigning premier, which led at every change. Klay Butler was best on ground for the Bloods, with four majors.

Power pulverises Jets Gippsland Power 15.9.99 Western Jets 4.8.32 GIPPSLAND Power scored a resounding TAC Cup win against Western Jets at Morwell on Saturday, but it was a game of two halves. The Power dominated in the first half, showing it is capable of playing determined, stunning football. However, its second half allowed the Jets to get back into the game. Fantastic pressure saw the Power lead by 33 points at the first change. Its rich vein of form continued in the second quarter with Willcocks

and Shaun Marusic kicking goals to further Power’s lead. This was the end of the goal scoring for that term as the Jets began to play with more composure. By the long break the Power was ahead by 46 points and appeared to have the game under control. Although it was less convincing later on, Power increased its margin by 21 points in the second half for a clear and emphatic victory. Goal kickers Jordan Staley 4, Simon Deery, Nick Graham, Clay Smith and Matt Willcocks 2, Jack Johnstone, Anthony Tipungwuti and Shaun Marusic 1.

BAIRNSDALE came through its first real test in the latest round of Gippsland League football, ending Morwell’s undefeated streak by 13 points. The Redlegs’ win sets the scene for a hard-fought match at home against Traralgon this coming weekend, with the visitors coming off a comfortable victory over Moe. Moe is hoping its return to the Ted Summerton Reserve on Saturday will also result in a change

of fortunes with a win over Maffra. The last game played on this surface before the multi-million dollar refurbishment was won by Maffra when it defeated Leongatha in the 2009 first semi-final. Maffra has won 23 of its past 25 matches against the Lions – the past three by 50 points or more - so history points to a win by the Eagles. Sale will host its first-ever night match and the ladder leaders will be favourites to beat Morwell.

Morwell cannot afford to give the Magpies a lead and will have to pay close attention to Sale’s Matt Ferguson, who kicked 12 goals a couple of weeks ago. After Morwell’s disappointing loss to Bairnsdale, coach Damien Kerr was not pleased. “The first quarter was ordinary, and we were behind the eight ball all day,” he said.

Swimmers smash Gippsland record

TRARALGON Swimming Club’s 14 years and under girls relay team brought home silver at the recent Australian Age Group Championships held at the new $81 million Adelaide Aquatic Centre. Competing in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay, Erin Roberts, Georgia Tsebelis, Taylah Da Ros and Maggie O’Keefe swam a new country and

Gippsland record time of 1 min 49.38 sec, smashing their previous record by over three seconds. In a nail-biting finish, the team was third at the last change, worked its way to the lead with 5m to go but was just overrun by the eventual winner, missing the gold by 0.16 seconds.

The team’s time was just 0.03 seconds shy of the Victorian record and the team is the first ever Gippsland team to win a medal at a national level. Senior head coach Brian Ford was ecstatic with the performance: “The club prides itself on having great relay teams. We practice starts, changeovers and

finishes, filming these and ensuring we put the swimmers in the best order. “These girls have practiced as a team for over six months getting the little things right and to come away with a national medal is a tribute to their hard work. “I have never seen a more excited group of athletes

receive their medals on the dais - it was a very proud moment for them, the coaches and parents and supporters.” The six-day meet also resulted in Georgia competing in five finals, breaking two country and seven Gippsland records and coming home with a bronze in the 200m individual medley.

Maggie made her first national final in the 50m freestyle while Brayden Haney, 14, showed signs of a potential breaststroke champion, making his first final . Stephanie Morgan, swimming at her last national age competition, also made the final of the 100m butterfly.

TTU hits its straps in 54pt win A FORTNIGHT’S break saw TTU start sluggishly in its North Gippy clash against Gormandale, before the Bombers hit its straps in the second term, running away with the game by 54 points. The Bombers trailed by 10 points at quarter time, then blitzed Gormandale in the second term, taking a 29-point lead into the main change. TTU again upped the intensity, doubling the visitors’ second-half score. Glengarry recorded a comfortable 64-point victory over Rosedale, continuing its unbeaten start to the season.

The young Blues kept with the competition’s number-one ranked side in a tight opening term, before kicking six goals to one in the second quarter. Chris Panayiotou and Shaun Barnes were instrumental in Glengarry’s victory, Barnes the key goal scorer finishing the match with six while Panayiotou gave the Magpies plenty of run. Rosedale’s Dale Fleming and brothers Rowan and Adam Diamond were impressive against their more-experienced opposition. Reigning premier Sale City had an easy win over Churchill, ahead by 58 points at the final siren.

The spirited Churchill lineup kept within arm’s reach of the home side, but a final-term blowout extended the margin considerably. Churchill’s Trav Brighton, ruckman Andrew Brown and youngster Jack Wyhoon were among the side’s best. Woodside moved into outright third position on the ladder following the Wildcats 15-goal victory on home turf against Stratford. For the second round, Justin Staley single-handedly took charge in front of goals, the full forward booting 13 of his side’s 25 goals.

The upset of the round was the Cowwarr versus Heyfield clash. With Cowwarr having gone down to Heyfield for the past five years and yet to record a win this season, the Saints were destined for a tough day at the office. Cowwarr’s defence was instrumental in shutting down the Kangaroos forwards as they swooped on the loose ball time and time again. Leading by four goals at the final change, the Saints turned it on in a goal surge in the final 25 minutes, finishing 51 points in front.
