or me, these elements are crucial to have when pursuing one's goals. As I reflect on my work, success, and achievements these elements are the key factors I focus on. Fashion has brought me to where I am today. Fashion for me is like joining the church. So wherever Fashion takes me becomes my next parish! After living and working in NY and LA, my research told me to go to the last glamorous city in America that has not been tapped yet. Virgin land where one can pioneer and establish one of the greatest industries in the world "Fashion”. The fact that 85% of American Made Apparel are all done in California. The proximity of Las Vegas is so near that we are practically next-door neighbors. There is no reason the industry cannot trickle to our city and open doors to new jobs, new ventures, and new beginnings. With Nevada's tax incentives and real estate at its affordable best, it is a perfect setting for creating a new industry. 2010 Las Vegas; The last frontier. Fashion as an "industry" has never set foot in Las Vegas. Do we have retail? Yes! We have the best of the best from all over the world but nothing from Las Vegas. As I always said "In fashion, the whole world is represented in Vegas, except Las Vegas!" Successfully, I was able to establish a small fashion presence by founding the non-profit Las Vegas Fashion Design Council in 2012. The goal of the LVFDC is helping and highlighting local talents in their creative growth. As we develop a fashion industry in Las Vegas, not just fashion events but a real productive industry, we need to establish a design presence through manufacturing, industry education and training, community and government support, as well as an abundant resource of information. A lot of publications are available all over the City of Las Vegas. Great information on what is going on, where to eat, who is coming to perform, parties here and club openings there, schedules and calendars of events. Endless affairs and celebrations fill the pages of every publication there is. Not to mention the on-going entertainment of shows and performers everywhere. However, what i noticed is that there is minimal publications focused on the local style, creative talents, and local institutions that make a difference. The people who made Las Vegas what it is today! The movers and shakers and the relevant figures in the city that maintain Las Vegas day in and day out. Today we need a local publication for locals that is presented with sophistication, class and good taste. Thru the eyes and experience of an artist like myself, I had a vision and an idea that will fill in the blanks. Who are these people that make up the city? They are colleagues, designers, artists, stylists, photographers, models, editors, art enthusiasts, collectors, composers, musicians, writers, CEO's, society figures, philanthropists, physicians, etc. Using fashion as my instrument and vehicle to bring everyone together and along with a team of experts and professionals, we created this magazine called L’Vegue. L'Vegue (le-veyGh) is a word I created! It is a stylish urban slang for Las Vegas! It is not in the dictionary of any language. It is original, unique, and a statement! With a younger generation of new entrepreneurs and future business tycoons gradually entrenching themselves in the city, they have very little appreciation nor knowledge that there are great people with history, talent, creative relevance, expertise, and professional contributions that should be celebrated! L'Vegue celebrates the brilliance of what Las Vegas has to offer! Through Fashion, Beauty, Society, Art and Culture, and Experience, we bring the ultimate “best of the best” of what Las Vegas is made of today! Join us and share the vision. If you think you are stylishly fabulous in Las Vegas? You have to be L' Vegue!...........

n Wednesday, April 8th, Wynn Las Vegas was not only the presenting host, but also the fashion sponsor, of the annual Flair

S

for Care benefiting Nathan Adelson Hospice. This yearly luncheon and fashion show (that in past years has featured the runway collections of such designers as Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, KaufmanFranco, and Monique Lhuillier), would be showcasing the AW15 collection from Naeem Khan. After the event (which was so good, I even ate my veggies -

HULMANSAYS: [Gesturing to a rack of embellished fur vests in rich jewel tones.] Now, these are shearling? NAEEM KHAN: Yes, shearling. I am a big believer in not killing for fashion purposes. Shearling is something that - as you know - we eat (lamb). So, how do you make shearling important? And this was my statement. SS: I think that what you do with your fabrics is especially interesting. NK: That is my first education. I grew-up in a house with my father and grandfather, who were fabricators; so I know how to make fabric. And once you know how to make fabric, it makes making dresses easier - especially in a case like mine, where I am dealing with weights, and threads that are fighting against grains. So, it's like engineering. Now look at these ladies coming-in [alluding to an earlier conversation wherein I'd remarked that he doesn't make many things "for day" and as a result, contrary to most luncheons of this sort, most of the looks seen that afternoon (save for a spectacular two-piece white dress and coat ensemble, with beaded black embellishments, worn with flair, by Elaine Wynn) didn't include much by way of Naeem Khan.] That's a top by me‌ [Gestures toward Carolyn Tobin, who was descending the stairs of the Chairman's Salon, in a smart Naeem Khan black-and-white, off-theshoulder tunic] How fabulous! Now, you know, that's a luncheon top. What is interesting is that we - as a company don't make a push that you come to our event wearing us. We like you to wear us, but we don't pre-send things, or setup shop. Our business is so tremendous, the sense is that we can only make so many of these. And we like to keep them limited, because I wouldn't like to see fifty people in town, wearing the same top. You know [returning to the topic of fabric], I've always been interested in fabric manipulation and the thread-work. 10| L’VEGUE.COM

Thanks, Lovee!), I was given an audience with the designer, himself, in the regal Chairman's Salon - converted for the afternoon, into a Naeem Khan showroom, complete with bouquets of fresh flowers, tasteful arrangements of mannequins, and racks of Khan's breathtaking clothes; as well as a few live models who seemed to change into one show-stopper after another!

And, I think that on my team, I have the finest craftsmen, in the world. I grant you, they are the finest. SS: How important to your current design aesthetic was the time you spent with Halston? NK: Super-important, because I came from a very chaotic background - being brought-up in India - in a fashion household, but not knowing the Western world. I grew-up in an Indian background, knowing only Indian fashion. Halston made me understand the importance of who you design for,

who the woman is, and how society works, in America (because unless you understand society, you won't be able to design for society). Halston was so important to me, on different levels. One of them was that. A second one was how do you take luxury and keep it simple? You know, a really, really luxurious thing; because he was super creative. There were things I did with him that were so amazing. We took Andy Warhol's Poppies, for example - Andy and I sat down, and drew poppies - and we sent it to India, and had all the poppies hand-done, in sterling silver and 24 karat gold. So yes, Halston was super-important, to me. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE


SS: The dress that you designed for the First Lady to wear at the Obamas' first State Dinner in office [in November 2009 - in honor of the Prime Minister of India and his wife] - it was just stupendous. NK: That was a challenge for me, in the sense that it incorporated the woman and her place in life, and the occasion, timing – it is all so important. To me, if you understand that side to the woman, it plays an important role – because wearing the wrong color or wearing something that is inappropriate for the season or place indicates an ignorance of fashion (which is obviously not the case with the First Lady). That dress was so well placed: It changed my entire life. SS: It was the perfect confluence of time, place, person, color, how it played with her complexion... It all merged so flawlessly NK: It was also keeping things simple. The styling, the jewelry, the make-up… All kept simple. It was all Warholinspired flowers, which again, I did with Halston-inspired beading in sterling silver. So it was very American, with traditional work from India; but done in a very modern way. SS: How do you want women to feel, when they are wearing your clothes. NK: Empowered. Confident. That they’ve arrived. That they are making a statement. I want to make them feel happy, because everyone wants to touch and feel them. That they feel important. As human beings, we want to feel that way. I want to feel that way. I want women who wear my clothes to feel super, super important. [By this point, many of Las Vegas’ super, super important women had gathered around the table at which we were sitting (mostly for Naeem, though I did receive a few “Hello, Darlings!”). And so, with an amused nod, I set the man free, to make these women feel happy. Not that any in this group needed any help feeling that she’d arrived. But ensuring that the sartorial armor she donned would make the statement she sought to make? Every day, and twice on Sundays!] And while I was drawn (like a stylish moth to a flamer) to the rack of floor-length beaded caftans; I did encourage one friend to try-on an exquisite beaded metallic top. It looked so marvelous on her, that she bought it, on the spot. No worries, Naeem - I was happy to pitch-in. That’s just how we roll, ‘round these parts.

The Epitome of The L’Vegue Lifestyle By: Tony Ferriera

B

ehind the gates of the many luxury communities in Las Vegas, therein lies a secret society of ladies. While they are known in their circles for their envied lifestyle and philanthropic work, I do not think they receive the recognition they deserve as the women who make a positive impact on the Las Vegas community. I recently had the pleasure to sit down with one of the ladies of this secret society, Elaine Newton. Most famously known as, the “former Mrs. Wayne Newton,” but I think she is a star in her own right. Ms. Newton is not only humble, well-spoken, and charming but has a great sense of humor. To me, that makes her a star. TF: Las Vegas has evolved into a global city, how do you compare Las Vegas when you first arrived in the late 60’s to today? EN: It has changed a lot with the increase in the number of hotels, the variety of world class restaurants, the great choices of entertainment, and of course, the increase in the number of residents and residential developments has grown tremendously. Las Vegas has evolved into a global vacation destination for both families and individuals who not only come to gamble but also shop at the high-end stores and outlet malls, eat at the various restaurants, and attend the variety of entertainment shows offered in the city. TF: You were once married to one of the country's beloved music icons. How was life with so much attention and fame?

EN: I was raised by parents who taught me and my siblings that “fame” was not important. They were well grounded and taught us that honesty and humility were the foundation of their lives and heritage. I did appreciate that I was married to a famous man and had a wonderful “big” life, but the fame was his and not mine. Most importantly, I developed many lasting and loyal friendships which have continued until today. I am fortunate to have friends that have been in my life when I was married and have remained my friends afterwards. I am still enjoying a wonderful life visiting friends, entertaining and traveling. TF: What negative impacts would you like to see in the community changed? EN: Crime! It is not only a problem in Las Vegas but everywhere. So, I would like to see an increase in law enforcement. Also, we need to reduce the amount of accidents, spousal abuse, child abuse, and as an animal lover, animal cruelty.

“I think my best characteristic is I am spiritual.” TF: What is your best characteristic? EN: I guess it is being kind, not judgmental and having a good sense of humor. I am also spiritual and love animals. TF: What is it that you like in others? EN: People who can laugh at themselves and those who don’t let success go to their heads. Also, people who are trustworthy and honest. TF: A new term that has been coined is “Girls Girl,” meaning women who support other women. Are you a “Girls Girl?” EN: Yes, absolutely. I have a network of a great group of women in Las Vegas and California. We get together often and we share issues we face at that moment in time. Sometimes it’s great and may not always be perfect, but we are there for each other in good times and bad. TF: Who do you look up to or who is your role model? EN: I have a few role models but primarily the person who made an impact on my life was my mother. She worked side by side with my father in running his business while raising a large family of seven children. She gave up her own dreams when she committed to her marriage to my father. She taught me the values that I live with Everyday. Also, another role model is a man I spent time with in Los Angeles. He bet me I couldn’t start a business without capital. I took that bet. He gave me three months to do it. At a luncheon I asked the girls to order cookies from me, but I need half the payment in advance. I explained to them why and they were all so supportive. For 3 months I baked at home and learned pretty quickly hot to do it cost effectively. It grew so quickly I couldn’t keep up with the orders. Well three months passed and I won the bet! I learned well how much work it was to “win a bet” (laughing). 14 | L’VEGUE.COM

“I love going in search of new restaurants and going into new areas.”

TF: With this great city of Las Vegas and everything it has to offer, what is one of your favorite things to do? EF: There are a lot of things I like to do. I love going in search of new restaurants and exploring new areas and venues. In fact, there are times when I get lost driving in an area I have not driven through before. Just recently, I took the back streets from my chiropractor’s office home and found I had not seen a lot of areas because the city has grown and spread out so much. I’m not a freeway driver so I do get to explore as I try to find my destination. TF: What causes or Charities do you support that you believe have made the biggest impact? EN: There are many; the Springs Reserve which educates the public on our environment, the Lou Ruvo Brain Research Center which does research

and provides support to people who have problems with brain function, the Nathan Adelson Hospice which helps terminal patients and families in their transition, the Smith Center For The Performing Arts which provides cultural experiences, and Opportunity Village with helps those with disabilities and the list goes on. All of these which I support as they all make an impact on the community. TF: In Closing, I have a personal question. I usually research the person I am interviewing but searching the internet and googling them. Why is it that I was not able to find anything about you? EN: (laughing) I once went on a date with a younger man and I said “do not ask my age”, He said, “ I know what it is since I googled you.” After that, I took steps to have all information about me deleted from the internet! hen David Tupaz and I first met at a Miss America Event in 2013, I knew that there was something special about him. We spent some time talking beauty and fashion then, and continued our dialogue recently over brunch at the Wynn Country Club. David asked me if I'd write an article for L'Vegue on beauty and great looking skin. As a board certified dermatologist and founder of Las Vegas Dermatology, I have had the unique opportunity to see all kinds of skin problems and I love using my skills and knowledge to unmask my patient's beauty from within.

our skin is the window dressing to your soul. Although beauty is only skin deep, ugly is to the bone. I've been asked my times, "Doctor Greenberg, How can I get my skin to look it's best?" There is no one right answer that works best for everybody. With the increasing popularity of the, "Selfie", people are becoming more attuned to their little imperfections- be they a freckle, blood vessel growth, wrinkle, deep fold or even those stuck-on brown/black cheek or forehead growths, like those seen on actor Morgan Freeman. Tailoring a skin care regimen to your specific needs is essential in taking your skin from acceptable to extraordinary. Although it is not possible to give everyone the porcelain skin of Anne Hathaway or the full lips of Angelina Jolieit is possible to have your skin look it's very best for you! People who care for other areas of their appearance, but don't care for their skin amaze me. So many Hollywood actors and actresses have little blemishes that could be easily removed with a tremendous improvement to their appearance. An image comes to mind of the female fashion icon who is dressed in the latest fashionsdress matching shoes matching hand bag matching watch matching jewelry, earrings

and necklaces- yet, they have blemishes on their skin masking what would otherwise be perfection. People are either unaware or otherwise unsure if they want their unsightly mole, sebaceous hyperplasia, seborrheic keratosis or blood vessel malformation treated. I would never recommend someone have unnecessary surgery, nor would I give my opinion on a cosmetic skin concern without being invited to do so. Telling someone to have an unnecessary procedure performed for a reason that is not medical necessary or by their own volition is cruel and rude. Yet, if allowed to offer my opinion- I would recommend a sort of trimming of the facial hedges and plucking of the facial weeds. At Las Vegas Dermatology, the tools we use to hedge and pluck range from fillers to volumize the skin, toxins to paralyze/soften wrinkles, and lasers to erase: wrinkles, ink, hair and brown spots. side from being known because of her Celebrity husband, Mario Lopez; Courtney Mazza-Lopez is an accomplished, singer, dancer and TV Host and has been in the theatre industry since the age of 3; and I had the opportunity to sit down and ask her a few candid questions. Andeen: First allow me to congratulate you; Pittsburgh CLO has awarded you the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award. How does this make you feel? Courtney: Old! Ha-ha! It's an honor that they think of me in that way. Andeen: Coming from a theatre background, if there was a soundtrack or song for your life, what would it be? Courtney: Oh geez, there are so many incredible songs. I would have to say the " A Chorus Line" soundtrack.

Andeen: How important is your hair and makeup team? Courtney: “They're everything! I wish they could live with me!" Andeen: What does beauty mean to you? Courtney: You're beautiful to me if you have a good heart. Andeen: Who inspires your fashion? Courtney: So many things. I wear whatever I am feeling that day. I'm all over the board! Andeen: What is the one beauty product you could not live without? Courtney: My tinted moisturizer. Andeen: Who is the one person who most influenced you? Courtney: my mom. She is an amazing woman with the kindest heart. We didn't have much but she made us feel like we had everything.

ven though most of us mere mortals will never understand what it takes to continuously be in the spotlight, we can agree on; at the end of the day, whether male or female, there is hard work, dedication and a team of talented individuals who get US ready for our big event.

ON THE RED CARPET

Andeen: 3 things people may not know about you? Courtney: I can't go to bed with a dirty kitchen. Each night I get everything ready for the next day (kids clothes for school, lunch box, diaper bag, etc.) The less I have to do in the morning, the better and I'm addicted to Soup Plantation. Andeen: Bullying seems to be on the rise, how will you teach your children to stand up for themselves and others? Courtney: Everyday I'm constantly instilling manners into my kids brain. Gia already knows that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. I will not allow my children to be bullies. It's ugly. Andeen: What projects do you have in the works? Courtney: I'm co-hosting a new game show on the WE network called "MY MAN CAN" coming out this summer.

THE VEGAS SUN UNDER "Las Vegas has yet to see it's greatest potential realized!" - Brian Greenspun

T

hose were the words of longtime Las Vegas entrepreneur and newspaper publisher Brian Greenspun when he shared his life story on Under The Vegas Sun. But that was just one headline! Former Mayor Oscar Goodman looked back on the City saying, "We just might have been better off when gaming was run by the Mob!" Each show features interesting insight into the world we live in, its people, its news, its entertainment and the real life stories of the people who make Las Vegas what it is. But there is so much more! What are the latest trends? Where is the City going and what can we all expect as the

future comes closer? Well here are a few items that might interest you and spark some potential in your mind. In 1966 when Howard Hughes first arrived in Las Vegas it signaled a new era in gambling resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. One year later, in 1967, Kirk Kerkorian, who is called the Father of the Mega resort, began his effort to build the International Hotel that became, at the time, the largest hotel in the world. Now step ahead to November 22, 1989 when Steve Wynn opened the Mirage signaling the coming of the “new” Mega Resort.


W

ith the help of Las Vegan Roger Thomas, The Mirage became the first of the Vegas resorts built on money from Wall Street. It remains an amazing facility and even the gold windows get their color from real gold dust. It was Steve Wynn, who not only brought in an amazing show featuring Siegfried and Roy, but also introduced the Las Vegas audience to Cirque du Soleil when he opened Nouvelle Experience under a tent at The Mirage. From there came Bellagio, the Venetian, Encore and of course City Center and so much more..But wait! A new era is right around the corner. For those of us who have been here for years we have seen many changes, both good and bad but the words of Brian Greenspun echo in my head.."We haven't seen the Best yet!" Four words, "Resorts World Las Vegas!" If you thought you have seen it all, wait! This $4 Billion dollar property, yes I said Four Billion, we mark a new era in Las Vegas Mega Resorts. It will be constructed in phases but eventually it will have 6,000 rooms. It will feature a 4,000 seat theater, replica of the Great Wall of China, a Panda exhibit and more, much more! I can promise you the Malaysian based Genting Group is going to pull out all the stops. Remember Genting is already involved with such business as power generation, biotechnology, oil and gas, and even operating cruise lines. If you think of what they have done just with their Norwegian and Crystal Cruise Lines we can only imagine. This resort will, I believe, have some of the most amazing private villas, suites and some of the largest rooms on the strip. The Asian themed resort will become "the" showplace on the strip. More to come in future stories. Speaking of showplaces if you think you have heard all there is on the MGM and AEG arena next to New York New York I can promise…you haven't. Everyone talks about the potential of a National Hockey League franchise but there will be so much more to this arena. Jim Murren, Bill Hornbuckle and the team have vowed to make this a centerpiece on the Las Vegas strip. Fortytwo top end suites, twenty-six Loge/opera boxes, sixteen hundred club seats and that's just the beginning. Concerts, red carpet events like more BIG award shows and of course becoming a true home for UFC-Las Vegas. The opening season of stars will astound you! And don't think there will be just the usual "arena" food being served..Not at this arena. I predict watch the Murren Hornbuckle Team pull out all the stops..This Is Las Vegas…

POINT WITH MAYOR CAROLYN GOODMAN

ayor Carolyn Goodman took time out of her busy day to sit down with me for an interview. Having never met her personally, I was unsure what to expect, but I came away with a new found respect and admiration. She is not only a strong and fierce proponent for Las Vegas she is definitely a straight shooter. After my sit down with Mayor Goodman, I certainly came away believing Las Vegas did the right thing in re-electing her for a second term.

TF: During your first term as Mayor, did you feel like you were being treated as an extension of your husband's legacy or do you feel you were given the opportunity to come in as a new Mayor and come in and prove yourself on your own merits? Mayor: Heck no. while the public perception, fortunately, appreciated everything Oscar had done to revitalize our downtown and our city; it didn't really take long for me to come and make my own mark and I felt very comfortable. I do think people see me as absolutely following with his vision and following the straight line to do everything for this city and to do what's best for the community. However, politically, I'm not in anybody's pocket. TF: As a female Mayor, do you feel you have to work harder than your male counterparts? Mayor: I was always raised to believe in myself. My parents had me and my sister and four female dogs. My father was an obstetrician, so everything around him was female. He and my mother always gave us girls the sense to be ourselves. So, I have always felt my own worth and knew if I didn't try, nothing was going to happen and I couldn't blame anyone else. It was instilled in us that you get out of life what you give it and its your responsibility to give it your best effort and do what you can to help others. T F: O n e o f y o u r b i g g e s t accomplishments in your first term was to increase the economic stability of the downtown Las Vegas area by bringing Zappos into the area. What are your plans now to keep the economic momentum going? Mayor: Keep fanning Tony Hsieh and Zappos. They've done a fabulous job. I think that what they've done is turn the entire community of Las Vegas around. But, we have so many other things that are really attracting everybody from around the world into our city including The Cleveland Clinic that is doing its studies on the brain for Alzheimers and Parkinsons. But, we also have the World Market Center. That was the high point. North Carolina furniture Mart was the lone ranger in the country. They were manufacturing the sale of high end

furniture. Low and behold, we have the World Market Center. Last January's Market was probably the best one that has ever been held anywhere in the country, it was so successful. Also, just recently we opened 27 new stores in the premium outdoor mall of market. So, not only do I continue to fan Tony Hsieh and Zappos, everybody else does too, because what it's done is sparked an increase in downtown more so than any other place in Southern Nevada. TF: Las Vegas, historically, has always been known for its gaming and tourism. However, in the past few years the resorts h a v e t u r n e d t o w a rd s h i g h e n d restaurants, day pools and entertainment as an alternative to just gaming. Like the arts district, do you feel there is room in Las Vegas to include a fashion industry? If so, how would you support that? Mayor: As a matter of fact, six years ago when I was campaigning for office, that was one of my visions to start a fashion industry here. I come out of New York City, the fashion industry and design capital of high end fashions. So, growing up in the heart of Manhattan, this was what Las Vegas was surely missing. When you look to build a world class city, fashion is very prominent, if not, one of the most significant pieces is the culture and the arts of which fashion is so important TF: There has been complaints that the characters in downtown Fremont Experience are showing more nudity. Do you think this is freedom of expression or should a policy be put in place to regulate it? Mayor: First of all, I think they need to look towards the fashion industry. They are surely not in fashion. They are out of fashion, that's number one. Number two, this has been an issue of first amendment rights for as long as I can remember. Once the Fremont Street Experience was built, we used to have these wonderful mimes and those who are really good at what they do but they didn't bother people. They would accept tips if they're offered, and that's fine. But, these people, unfortunately, have no taste, have no understanding of anything. They absolutely have their freedom of speech, they're allowed to do what they want, but personally I find them quite revolting.


TF: What are your main goals for your current term as Mayor and how can the community help bring those goals into fruition? Mayor: Well, one of the biggest things I see that I've been working on in the last term of course was trying to pull together all our philanthropic groups to make sure that they were working together and stop making duplicating efforts to make sure that the donors have an opportunity to understand what tremendous organizations that are these larger groups; goodwill, salvation army, three square, catholic charities, Jewish federations. My very first focus is on safety, noone is going to do business here, noone is going into the fashion industry, if in fact, we're not safe. The first thing I'm going to do is continue to work with Sheriff Lombardo on law enforcement and fire rescue to make sure our community is safe in all aspects. The second thing that I am going to do is to continue to work on, and have been working on all this time, is providing top notch medical care. I don't want to hear from people that they have to go to the airport and go somewhere else to get quality medical care. It's perfectly ridiculous with how wealthy this state is and still have people leaving the state for treatment. We have the best specialists including The Cleveland Clinic, and The Lou Ruvo Brain Institute, and we're on the map internationally because of that, but I want to see us develop the medical schools and get the specialist going.

elen Keating sat down to interview Creezy Courtoy, former top French fashion model, perfume historian, anthropologist, luxury expert and a results-oriented businessperson. Creezy is also the Founder and Chairman of the International Perfume Foundation which she began in 1995. Helen: Thank you, Creezy, for taking time to answer a few questions today. Creezy: You are so very welcome, Helen! Helen: With all I have been reading about your very fascinating background in fashion and perfume, your extensive historical research and your interests in business I have to ask you: what motivates you to be so involved in all of these activities? Creezy: That's a great question, Helen! Several years ago I realized that because the world was changing so quickly, the question was: "Are these changes resulting in positive outcomes or not?" I concluded that in many cases these changes were producing many negative, unintended effects and consequences. In our journey to development and use technology (much of which we all benefit from) we were being separated from those things that should be more important to us, including connectivity to the natural world and the wonderful products that the world has provided us with. This motivated me to begin to create bridges or pathways between consuming communities and communities producing products made from natural materials around the world, not just perfumes, but other products like clothing, food, accessories, and home décor. Helen: What do you mean by bridges or pathways? Creezy: More and more people are coming to recognize that it isn't enough to just buy a particular product because of its name or brand. People want to know much more about where the product came from, and how it was made. They want the story behind the product. Consumers are increasingly looking for products that have been made without harming people or the earth. But these products are not easy to find and many companies that produce synthetic alternatives to natural products have created barriers between consumers and producing communities that require "bridges" to be constructed. These can be logistics bridges that can transport products, but also communication bridges, such as social and commercial media that provide information about these natural products to those wishing to receive it and benefit from it. Helen: Is this what you mean when you talk about New Luxury Products or Brands? Creezy: Exactly! Helen: So, if you had to describe New Luxury with one word, what would it be?

Helen: OK, respect. Can you expand on that? Creezy: Sure. If we are going to improve our world, we have to focus on respect. That effort starts with each individual: self-respect. Then, it is about respecting those we live and work with as well as respect for communities which are made up of the organizations, businesses, the places of worship, schools and the natural resources surrounding the communities. The products and services consumed by these communities should be purchased by thoughtful consumers wishing to improve their lives and the world by using products produced with respect to workers, the environment and the communities the products come from. These ideas led me to develop the New Luxury concept in 2004 and it is what we mean by New Luxury Products and Brands. Helen: Switching gears a bit here, can we talk about your work as Chairman and Founder of the International Perfume Foundation? Creezy: Of course. During the time when I was researching the origins of perfume, I came to realize that the perfume industry from sourcing, to production, to the marketing and promotion was going through a serious transition from what it had been for hundreds and thousands of years to something completely different. Now, sometimes changes are necessary if those changes improve our lives. But what was happening was not improving people's lifestyles. On the contrary what I learned was that as large perfume companies began replacing natural materials with synthetic substitutes, regions of the world that had been supplying these natural materials had been devastated. Jobs lost. Communities harmed. The cultural heritage of these key places producing natural oils and perfumes were being lost. Heritage flowers and plants and the methods of cultivating them were disappearing. So in 1995 I created the International Perfume Foundation to promote natural alternatives in perfume production while working to reestablish the cultural heritage of producing natural perfumes and helping to conserve natural heritage flowers and plants within those regions. This last program is what we call our World Heritage Program that is currently working in places like Cambodia and Malaysia to preserve and conserve this vital natural heritage. Helen: Well that is so interesting, Creezy. Can you share with us what you have planned for the future here in Las Vegas? Creezy: Well, without going into too much detail, we have decided that Las Vegas is the perfect community to open the World Perfume Museum and exhibit my collections of antique perfume objects and manuscripts to showcase these beautiful pieces and will have further information about our plans in the coming months. 32 | L’VEGUE.COM

Dorit Schwartz's sublime sculptures lyrically express spiritual enhancement and power, particularly that of the natural world. This is poetic ekphrasis, telling the tale, in physical terms, of the invisible, a vision of unity and transparency. A crystal within the branches of a tree, the creation of open space to contain a metaphysical heart of agate or amethyst. Schwartz's remarkable works featured in this fascinating, profound and informative book are made of beautiful hand carved materials including rare wood, and gemstones. The magic of all of Schwartz's work includes a quiet evocation of the spiritual. No overt symbols exist, rather seemingly simple shapes stand, like nautilus shells, hidden treasures often at the core. The artist has worked the surface and form, however, her interventions are subtle, and almost seamlessly perfect, the objects seem touched by elements, weathered by the sky, by rain, by the ocean. She has maintained a classical paradigm, adherence to the truth of materials, as first expressed by the alternately smooth and rough marbles of the great 19th century French artist Auguste Rodin and the late 19th - early 20th century Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi. These elements and sensibility coalesce in Schwartz's work to express something metaphysical as seen in the organic rounded shape of Contemplation composed of an iconic center of selenite crystal, rooted in lovely acacia wood, suggesting meditative and spiritual experience. The search for ascension and the attainment of spiritual elevation is present in all religion, whether Buddhist, Taoist, Christian, Judaism, Islam or Hindu and many other belief systems and philosophies. What Schwartz captures in her work is this invisible truth, a metaphysical concept that is represented by the distilled purity of nature, masterfully created in hand made sculptures of the utmost earthly material. In Schwartz's extraordinary oeuvre, nature functions as the model for the synergetic, symbiotic and cyclical, an inspired expression of personal spiritual harmony.

TF: You are also a big supporter of fashion. Who are the designers that you'd like to see come to support the Las Vegas fashion industry. EN: I would like to see more designers like Diane Von Furstenburg who is wonderful in mentoring new designers. David Tupaz, who moved his couture design studio to Las Vegas, with the help of our Mayor, created an awareness for new designers who want to establish themselves in Las Vegas. TF: What are your thoughts on Las Vegas having their own fashion week?

TF: Do you believe your home is a reflection of who you are? EN: My home is a reflection of my personality. It’s a place where friends and family come to enjoy and relax with good food, good wine, and a great movie. TF: You have some interesting pieces can you tell me more about them. EN: The bronze piece is actually one of three bronzes created by Dalin. It was created to depict the plight of the Indians. This piece is the chief welcoming foreigners, the second was to warn intruders, and the third was defending themselves.

EN: I would like to see the designers create a fashion week in Las Vegas similar to the New York Fashion Week. With all the designers already here in Las Vegas selling their fashions in Las Vegas it would make sense to have a “Week of Fashion.” TF: What does fashion mean to you? EN: Being comfortable in your choices, not because the piece is trendy. I admire women who think outside the box and create their own personal style. TF: There are many luxury communities in Las Vegas. What made you decide on Summerlin? EN: The most important reason is being near my family. I have a sister and nephews with their families so it’s convenient to visit with everyone. Also, Summerlin provides all of the amenities I enjoy which include restaurants, shopping, and the personal services I use. TF: Where did your inspiration come from to style and design your home? EN: What had actually happened was that the furniture meant for my home was stolen from a truck en route from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. My friends and family accompanied me while I shopped locally and chose pieces that are comfortable and exactly what I enjoy everyday, It’s all very “Zen.” I loved the input and it became fun looking for new pieces.

Also, a Buddhist monk who was teaching in Las Vegas came to bless my home. It was special to have my friends from here and Los Angeles share that day with me.

ebbie Carroll, born and raised in Belfast Ireland, was a name more commonly recognized in the Irish Dance community. At the age of 17, Debbie along with her twin Sister, joined the world renowned Irish musical and dance production, Michael Flatley's 'Lord Of The Dance'. As a lead dancer in the show, Debbie travelled the globe performing daily to stadium sized audiences. Debbie was chosen as lead in the show which was resident at the New York New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. She also exhibited in a Lily Lounge fashion show, on the red carpet at the 2015 MTV awards, in music videos on entertainment channel E and in the Miss USA 2014 and Miss Universe pageants. Debbie's designs have also been featured in national and international fashion magazines. Debbie's many achievements include being chosen as the designer of Miss Ireland's evening gown which she wore at the final of Miss World contest in London December 2014. As an annual sponsor at the Miss Nevada pageant Debbie also has the pleasure of designing for the winning contestant as she competes for the title of Miss USA. Debbie is also a judge and sponsor/designer for the Miss Nevada Latina pageant. As Debbie Carroll Design continues to grow, so does her collection and ambition. Her design portfolio now includes her signature cocktail dresses, rompers, stunning wedding dresses and beautiful gowns. Debbie has just launched a kids line and is eager to grow her collection.

STYLE & SOPHISTICATION Debbie Carroll Brings Her Designs Back To The Future DT: Have you always wanted to be in fashion? Debbie: From the day I could walk, my mother encouraged me to be an Irish Dancer. This was my passion from a young age. My career started in the entertainment industry where I utilized my dancing talent, I became a professional dancer with 'Lord of the Dance' and toured with them for many years. Despite having a successful career, I always had an interest in design and I this developed into me opening my own interior design company. I completed a few project for some high profile clients investing in property in Las Vegas which prompted me to leave the show. I began recognizing my own success for being creative and soon I was transitioning into the fashion world. I realized that I possessed a natural talent for fashion designing, I had a natural flare and I wanted to capitalise on this. Not only was I creating pieces for myself but I was Inspiring women of all ages. I have such a drive for this industry now, I want to keep growing and to make this my career for life and make my mark in the fashion world. I truly have a passion for fashion. DT: What was your earliest experience that brought you to Fashion? Debbie: I always remember being a little girl sketching outfits. No matter what I bought in stores, I would always take to a tailor to change it. I never wanted to be the same as anyone else, I always had a desire to look different, I wanted to personalize all my outfits so I felt the best. Las Vegas didn't change this hobby. I started to create my own design in order to achieve the look I wanted, a look I couldn't buy in the stores in Vegas. DT: Is there someone who have inspired you or mentored you? Debbie: I haven't really had a mentor in the fashion world. I didn't go to college, I haven't studied fashion, and I didn't necessarily know anyone who worked in this industry. All I had was ambition and determination to make a success out of my newly found passion in design. One designer that never fails to catch my attention and whom is a true inspiration is Victoria Beckham. She is my idol and I have so much respect for her and what she has created. My admiration for her is paramount, to see how she transitioned from an entertainer into the world class designer she is today is an amazing achievement and one I want to replicate. DT: What is it about Las Vegas that made you want to pursue designing here? Debbie: I often enjoyed the nightlife Las Vegas had to offer but I always found it so difficult to choose an outfit to wear. I was often really disappointed with the limited choices of

designs available in the stores here in Las Vegas. As a result, I decided to take it upon myself to design and create a dress that I was to wear for my Birthday. I chose the fabric, sketched a very rough design and took this idea to a tailor. The final product was perfect and the attention and the number of enquiries I got from girls were overwhelming. This gave me a light bulb moment, Las Vegas was an untapped market place for my style and it provided the perfect platform for me to create, promote and then sell my design ideas to the glamorous girls frequenting this city. That is how Debbie Carroll Design was born.

DT: How do you describe your style? and who is you ideal woman? Debbie: My style represents sophistication, elegance class and glamour. I strongly believe in women dressing like ladies. Less is more; leaving things to the imagination is far sexier in my eyes. My ideal woman in the fashion world today is Victoria Beckham. She left the entertainment industry and with ideas, ambition and determination, she has created a world class brand which represent her own personal style and take on fashion. I can relate to this and it has given me the inspiration to reach her level of success and stature. DT: How do you see the design industry here in Vegas? how do you see it's future? Debbie: The design industry In Las Vegas is in its infancy, but as this great city grows, I feel the fashion industry will grow with it. With wonderful influences of the LVFDC and the great work it does in promoting fashion designer in Las Vegas, there is a bright future ahead. I personally want to make my stamp on this city because I feel I can quite easily compete with fashion designer from the more recognized cities such as LA, Paris, London and New York. I want to contribute to getting this city on the map for being a hub for fashion.
