WIN THIS! WHERE IT’S AT!

It’s more than our weekly ritual to go to Robinsons Place Bacolod. We enjoy the food, chillin’ at cafés, and doing activities with my son. We do our groceries here and anything we need in between. I even use it as an excuse to go on long walks, do quick window shopping, then I walk back home. The mall also has the Central City Walk, where we can even bring our pooches to enjoy dining with us or just chilling around the fountain area listening to live music. —Valerie S. Desamparado

A WHOLE NEW LOOK

It’s been years since I last visited Robinsons Place Manila, and I love how airy and spacious the interiors now are! The old configuration was kind of dark, so the new look was really a pleasant surprise. I’m glad that the tiangges are now confined to the middle of the mall, and that the walkways are more relaxed. It makes the entire shopping experience more enjoyable. —Gloria Paredes

Love in the Spotlight Let’s admit it, Dingdong and Marian RiveraDantes are #RelationshipGoals!

I

BY STEPHANIE JESENA

t’s just like a fairy tale—handsome prince and beautiful princess fall in love, get married, and live happily ever after. But the story doesn’t end there. As Dingdong and Marian Rivera-Dantes continue their journey as husband and wife and now as parents to Baby Zia, we fall in love with them even more.

PRIMETIME KING AND QUEEN

Who can forget the cracker commercial showing a pretty girl waiting out the traffic with her boyfriend? What ’90s girl could resist the charms of the T.G.I.S heartthrob Iñaki? Who would have thought that one day, these two talented people’s paths would cross and they would go on to become one of the most famous and sought-after couples in show business? Marian and Dingdong have made viewers swoon, giggle, and giddy with kilig when the actors played lovers on Marimar and Dyesebel. As they appeared together in one top-rated show after another, the audience only became more enthralled with them. And when their on-screen romance spilled over into real life, they took everyone along for the ride, right up to the altar!

MARIAN ON MOTHERHOOD

Views hit an all-time high when the first photo of Maria Letizia Dantes appeared on the Internet. Affectionately called Baby Zia, Marian and Dingdong’s beautiful daughter proves to be a constant source of happiness to the proud parents. “Each month, the joy becomes more priceless. ’Pag tinatawag ako ng baby kong ‘Mommy,’ my heart melts,” says the actress. So how does Marian juggle career and family? “It’s a tough balancing act, pero supportive ang husband kong si Dingdong so everything becomes easier,” she explains.

DINGDONG AND HIS DAD

Thanks to his dad’s guidance, Dingdong is the success that he is now. “Actually, I owe everything to him,” he admits. “He helped me define my goals.” As a sign of gratitude, Dingdong declares, “It’s payback time.” He also emphasizes the importance of giving support not just to his father, but also to everyone in the family. In fact, he and Marian regularly touch base with their parents. Gettogethers occur “at least once a week, Sundays usually,” says the actor.

FOOD FAVORITE

Speaking of get-togethers, what’s one without lots and lots of food? That’s exactly what Dingdong and Marian want for such gatherings, and among the delicious spread they prepare for family, friends, and fans is one of their absolute favorites: Chicken McDo! Great idea for your next get-together, right?

TRY MARIAN AND DINGDONG’S FAVORITE CHICKEN MCDO

Simply head over to the nearest McDonald’s store or drive-thru, or follow Dingdong and Marian and have Chicken McDo delivered right at your doorstep by calling McDelivery at 86-236, ordering through www.mcdelivery. com.ph, or accessing the McDo Ph app. Want to share your McMcMc-Masarap experience? Now that’s a match made in lipstick heaven.

Robinsons Place Jaro brings a worldclass experience to a location full of heritage and history.

With three floors, Robinsons Place Jaro is packed with ever ything Ilonggos need!

BY LYNN LOPEZ The recent opening of Robinsons Jaro in Jaro, Iloilo, marks a big step for the famed heritage district and has brought convenience and a wealth of food and shopping options even closer to the local community and residents from neighboring areas. Robinsons Place Jaro is the second Robinsons mall in Iloilo City, and all three levels of the complex are packed with exciting shops, including homegrown ones that highlight the best that the province has to offer.

16

WHO’S WHO AT THE GRAND OPENING

The grand opening on September 8 was attended by Robinsons Land executives Frederick Go and Arlene Magtibay, celebrities Maja Salvador and Billy Crawford, and local officials like Cong. Jerry TreĂąas, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr., Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Vice Mayor Joe Espinosa III, and Iloilo City councilors. Guests also enjoyed a performance by Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School, who emerged victors of the Dinagyang Festival Ati-atihan category this year.

A GASTRONOMIC HAVEN Ask people what their favorite thing is about Iloilo and many will include food on their list. Iconic dishes such as Pancit Molo and La Paz Batchoy all have their roots in Iloilo, and many people look forward to visiting and returning to the province for a taste of the authentic. Robinsons Place Jaro takes visitors on an incredible food trip as well with its vast selection of restaurants, including many local ones. Kamalig serves up another famed Ilonggo dish called Kadyos, Baboy, Langka, or KBL. Wild Bamboo, a Japanese restaurant, serves up international flavors. Ocean City is where you can get your seafood fix. Salads and Wraps is for when you’re hankering for something a little lighter and healthier. The stars of the Food Gallery offer more options, such as The Katsu-Don, Ms. Hot Plate, Pub Express, Grillers, which is known for their baked oysters, and Nino’s Burritos.

After indulging in any of those restaurants, you can cap off your meal with coffee at Zatazza, a scoop of gelato at Buon Gelato, any of Sweet Cravings’ delightful desserts, cinnamon rolls at Cinnamonde, or Ilonggo delicacies at the Original Biscocho House.

WHAT’S FUN AT THE MALL Robinsons Place Jaro is also welcoming a host of new stores, some of which are opening in the city for the first time. For example, Res Toe Run is opening its doors to cater to the city’s shoe lovers, and sporty individuals will also find their favorites at Habagat and World Balance. Other shops that are new to the city are Kira’s Box, Imono, and Silicon Valley. Local stores such as Dash, Keevena, Hue Inspire Clothing, and Courier are also worth exploring for those who are new to the city. There are also plenty of options for entertainment at the mall. With culinary options from all over the world, the Food Gallery is definitely going to be a favorite mall destination.

A stroll throughout the mall also shows something fun and photo-worthy: three giant installations featuring a stiletto, a chair, and a frame. People will definitely have fun taking photos of them. In addition, the mall doesn’t fail to pay tribute to its community. The common hallways are decorated with framed pictures that feature old Jaro’s famous landmarks and architecture. With its modern offerings set amidst a location that echoes with history, Robinsons Place Jaro seamlessly blends the old with the new.

DID YOU KNOW? The heritage district of Jaro, Iloilo, has won the hearts of many visitors with its classic mansions, historic landmarks, and food. Here are some interesting tidbits about the district that is also known as “the City Within a City.” Other nicknames of Jaro are “The Mestizo District of Iloilo,” what with the vast number of Spanish-Filipino families in the area, as well as “Seat of the Catholic Archbishopric of Jaro” and “Seat of Catholicism and Protestantism.” Its original name was “Salog” or “Saro.” Jaro is the birthplace of journalist and national hero Graciano Lopez Jaena. Its feast day is on February 2, and its patron saint is Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (Our Lady of Candles). Famous heritage houses in Jaro include Nelly’s Garden, the Ledesma Mansion, and Casa Mariquit.

Found! GINGERSNAPS: CLOTHES FOR TODDLERS

When we caught up with Carie and Kit, they were happily toting new-found purchases from Gingersnaps, the shop on the top of their lists for their kids’ OOTDs. Carie, who had just purchased a pair of bright yellow bottoms for her 7-month-old baby, gushed over the breathability of the fabric. Unlike other kids’ clothing, Gingersnaps fabrics feel as light as they look. Their clothes, which come in a wide array of styles, are cool to the eyes and light on the skin—the perfect gift for your newest pamangkin’s first Christmas, or to add a little flavor to a mommy-to-be’s maternity wardrobe. Between the adorable styles and cool colors, you’d be hard-pressed not to buy out the store!

PABLO CHEESE TART

Meet the newest kid on the block! Fresh from Japan, Pablo’s cheese tarts have been the talk of the town, and everyone wants a taste. Cristina, Letty, and Judy are three of the many willing to brave the snaking lines to get a bite of the much-anticipated Cheese Tart. They admit it was already their second visit to Pablo’s for the week. Perhaps it’s the lightness and richness of the tarts that keep people coming back for more. Maybe it’s the tastiness of their biscuits (also a bestseller!). Whatever the case, Pablo’s got people hooked and it’s the perfect thing to take to a Christmas get-together at a friend’s house.

For many Christmas shoppers, Robinsons is a one-stop shop. We met up with some happy customers who were more than excited to share their best holiday finds.

CAMERAHAUS: SP2 FUJIFILM INSTAX PRINTER

Lately, it seems every millennial and Generation Y-er out there has a phone in one hand and some form of camera in the other. Shelly can testify to this. She claims her nieces made a special request for their Christmas present this year: the SP2 Fujifilm Instax Printer. And indeed, this model takes the Instax game up a notch. The SP2 Instax Printer hooks up to your cellphone, so you can take photos from your phone (and edit them, too), before printing them out in retro-chic Polaroid-esque form. A fun and thoughtful gift like this would make you an instant hero with the young ‘uns!

BOARDING GATE: TRU VIRTU ALUMINUM WALLETS

Sonja came to Robinsons on the hunt for the perfect Christmas present for her jet-setting friend. She found just the ticket at Boarding Gate, a new travel shop from Singapore. From luggage to locks, beautifully designed water bottles to quirky travel accessories, Boarding Gate carries all your travel essentials, plus everything you never knew you needed. Sonja proudly showed us the Tru Virtu Aluminum wallet she’d purchased. Sleek and stylish on the outside, it is also a tough cookie. It protects your cash and cards from illegal scanning, demagnetization, and it’s weather-proof, too. A wallet like this would be on everyone’s wish list!

DATA BLITZ: VIDEO GAMES Holiday shopping for teenage boys can be a struggle. What do you get someone who never wants anything in particular? Noli had just finished Christmas shopping for his son when he shared with us his go-to dad secret: video games! Indeed, you’d be hard-pressed to find a home without some form of video game console, or a boy who doesn’t enjoy playing them. At Data Blitz, rows upon rows of video games await—these would make the perfect presents guaranteed to keep your sons and nephews entertained for hours on end!

WEEKEND WARRIORS

Movie dates aren’t only for couples. They’re for family, too! Juvi, Steve, Starlene, John Steveric, and Arlene are strolling around after watching a movie at Robinsons Movieworld.

Carl Melvin, a client care associate, reenergizes for the work week ahead by seeking new sights and sounds. He checked out newly opened stores at Robinsons Jaro and found a new favorite haunt or two.

Cindy’s days as a customer care representative are always busy and stress-filled. She’s on her way to meet up with a friend, so they can relax together.

Quality analyst Jan makes sure her surroundings reflect her personality. This weekend, she’s looking for a tiny potted cactus to brighten up her workspace.

Friends Janwen and Maethone are shopping for shoes inside Res Toe Run. Kudos to them for making excellent fashion choices.

Couples who run errands together, stay together. Jackie and Yeno are at the mall to get his watch repaired.

Foodies Zimri, Marlon, and Carl are always on the hunt for new restaurants in the city. They’re discovering a ton of gastronomic delights to experience at Robinsons Jaro.

Barkada outings aren’t confined within the limits of summer vacation. Pam, Angel, Albert, and Vince meet up often and are about to enjoy a new flick at Robinsons Movieworld.

Beautiful motherdaughter pair Noxy and Roxy always bond during weekends. They are on their way to the grocery store to purchase a few essentials.

Coworkers Mitch and Jenny ran into each other by accident while shopping for perfume. They both love sweet scents, so maybe it wasn’t such a big coincidence?

Medical technician Valerie is an amateur gardener during her free time. She’s selecting the newest addition to her garden.

According to college classmates Joseph, Mabs, and Edwin, World of Fun lives up to its name. They played a few games after a homework-filled week.

Twenty-one-yearold David likes looking cool for his job at a call center. Penshoppe is one of his favorite brands, and he’s just in time for one of their sales.

Holiday

Robinsons Malls does its very best to make every Christmas a special and exciting season. This year, the wonderful shows and decorations will surely put a smile on everyone’s faces. BY LYNN LOPEZ

DAZZLING DECOR Christmas trees are the star of any holiday celebration, and the trees at different Robinsons Malls do not disappoint. In Robinsons Magnolia, guests can take in the amazing sight of a 40-foot tree in the mall atrium. The tree is decked out in white, red, yellow, and champagne gold, and it features massive white, cream, and gold poinsettias, metallic stars, and large Christmas balls. Characters from The Nutcracker suite decorate the base. The tree in Robinsons Place Manila is another stunner. It stands at a height of 34 feet and features shades of purple, green, and magenta. It is decorated with flowers and ornaments, as well as Christmas balls, stylized curlicues, and drop lights, with Baroque border designs pulling together the entire look of the tree. Visitors can also skate on the 200 square meter skating rink beside the tree.

20

Robinsons Metro East has put up a 20-foothigh Christmas tree decorated with Santa Claus figures, candy canes, snowflakes, bird cages, candies, lollipops, assorted Christmas balls, poinsettias, twigs, gemstones and white berries in its canopy. Robinsons Tacloban has decked out their Christmas tree with tons of sweet treats, and Robinsons Galleria Cebu’s tree soars at 42 feet, featuring floral arrangements, gemstones, golden ornaments, and a Baroque border design at the base. And as for the rest of the malls? You’ll have to visit them to find out what kind of trees they feature! Robinsons Ilocos, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Butuan, and GenSan are also featuring a Christmas village with moving animal displays, and Robinsons Place Tagum is playing host to Santa’s House. For something a bit more traditional, head over to Robinsons Luisita to view their giant nativity display.

Meet the All-Stars Restaurants come and go, but these best-selling dishes have stood the test of time! BY MARA EALA

CLASSIC SAVORY Classic Savory Chicken You know a dish is going to be good when the restaurant deems it worthy of its name. Such is the case with the Classic Savory Chicken. Founded in 1950, Classic Savory has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a panciteria in the heart of Quiapo. Without a doubt, the Classic Savory Chicken dish deserves some of the credit for making Classic Savory the institution it has become. Diners flock to Classic Savory to get a taste of the chicken marinated in the rich flavors of their top secret blend of spices, before being cooked to juicy perfection. Delicious on its own, Classic Savory Chicken is irresistible when paired with their special gravy.

PANCAKE HOUSE House Special Set There’s something nostalgic about Pancake House— family dinners and light conversations forever tied to the buttery smell of a golden waffle. Pancake House is a family favorite, and it’s easy to see why. The Pan Chicken has become a classic over the years—the chicken, crisp to the touch and sensational with their special gravy. It’s perfect on its own, but even better when paired with spaghetti. The Pancake House Spaghetti has just the right amount of sweetness and comes topped with a generous amount of cheese. The two together will send you back to your childhood parties. The only thing that could beat the chicken-andspaghetti combo is a chicken-spaghetti-and-taco combo! At Pancake House, grab all your favorites in one when you order the House Special Set.

CHOPSTOP BBQ Chops Chopstop may be one of the newer kids on the block, but this heavy hitter has become an instant favorite, and it’s not hard to see why. Their quick service makes it the perfect pit stop for your one-hour lunch break, or for chow-down sessions with the barkada. Theirs is a no-frills menu, and diners looking for a heavy, hearty meal will not be disappointed. From chops to cheesy bacon fries, bacon and eggs, to Buffalo wings, Chopstop’s got your protein fix covered. And for the diner who just can’t decide, try their bestselling BBQ chops. Their signature breaded chops are glazed to perfection with a smoky-sweet BBQ sauce, and served with a side of vegetables or nachos and rice. Who can say no to that?

HAINANESE DELIGHTS Hainanese Delights Singapore may be miles away, but at Hainanese Delights, it is but a bite away. While each of their dishes is loaded with Asian flavors, nothing captures the essence of the restaurant more than their signature dish, the Hainanese Delights. This chicken and rice combination is a feast for the senses. Masterfully prepared, the steamed white chicken is soft, juicy, and topped with a flavorful sweet sauce. The meat falls off the bone as easily as it melts in your mouth. The white chicken comes with a cup of Hainan rice, which is so loaded with chicken flavor, it’s almost good enough to eat on its own. The chicken and rice pairing makes it clear why Hainanese Delights is the restaurant’s namesake dish.

SBARRO Chicago White Pizza In the mood for some carbo-loading? At Sbarro, you are greeted by a display of mouth-watering options, from creamy pastas with mix-and-match sauces to a variety of pizzas. At Sbarro, you can’t go wrong—each dish is made with premium ingredients and topped generously with rich sauces. But what has truly set Sbarro apart from your average pizza joint is its best-selling White Pizza. A 15-inch deep-dish pizza, the White Pizza is a hefty two inches thick. The buttery dough melts in your mouth and is packed with generous helpings of ham, pepperoni, pineapple tidbits, mozzarella, and ricotta sauce—everything your stomach could possibly desire!

Eat & Drink BONCHON K-style Chicken Korea mania has reached Manila! The craze is especially real at BonChon, the go-to shop of diners looking to satisfy their cravings for Korean food, and nothing hits the spot quite like their famous K-style Chicken. At BonChon, you get your chicken exactly as you want it—their K-style chicken dish is fully customizable, as diners get to choose everything from the size of the dish, the part of the chicken they prefer, and even the flavor that they’re in the mood for! When it’s served, the chicken is hot, fresh, and fried to perfection. Enveloped in the perfect amount of glaze, the chicken itself is tender, its skin just the right kind of crispy. We guarantee you’ll leave with your craving satisfied.

GOLDILOCKS Dinuguan All you bargain hunters out there need not look any further! For days that call for a hearty bowl of home-cooked, comfort food, head on over to your closest Goldilocks branch. More than just cakes and polvoron, Goldilocks serves an array of Filipino dishes. Their Dinuguan in particular has become a merienda favorite. Loaded with pork chunks, the dark stew is equal parts sour, salty, and peppery. Goldilocks’ Dinuguan is so good it could practically stand on its own, but pairing it with rice or puto just takes it to the next level. Can’t get enough? Order their Dinuguan (and other dishes) in funfeast size for your next party!

CONTI’S Baked Salmon Over the years, Conti’s has made a name for itself, particularly for its rich pastries and cakes. You’ve no doubt seen their famous Mango Bravo towering over all other desserts at family reunions, or sampled their cookies from an officemate during break time. But lately, Conti’s has become popular for their savory dishes, too. While all their dishes are surefire hits at Christmas potluck, Conti’s Baked Salmon is sure to be the talk of the town. Baked to perfection, the salmon steak is tender and juicy, and its natural flavors blend perfectly with the rich garlic Parmesan sauce slathered generously over the salmon. It’s no wonder this is their signature dish.
