June 2023

There’s a moment at the end of an interior design project where the final touches are added- the perfect throw blanket is draped across the sofa, the artwork is hung, the candlesticks are placed on the fireplace mantle- and all of a sudden the stress of the renovation begins to fade away and the client starts to feel at home Although I would love to bottle that feeling and turn it into a room spray, sadly, I cannot.

Even after twenty years in the business, I am still blown away by the power that interior design has over our wellbeing, our happiness and our comfort To me, there's no better way to express my love and gratitude towards my client than when I get to hand them the keys to their new space and say:

WELCOME HOME

LINDSAY HUNTER About

Lindsay Hunter combines her enthusiasm for interior design with her passion for the equestrian lifestyle to create intentional, inspiration living spaces from all walks of life

Past clients appreciate her attention to detail and her ability to bring the best out of any space, no matter how large or small. Lindsay brings a wealth of knowledge, insightful understanding, and elevated scope to every project because she understands why a house should feel less like a building and more like an extension of your life, identity, and passions

Now based in San Diego, CA, interior designer Lindsay Hunter graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History After an intensive study in art and architecture in Bologna, Italy, Lindsay went on to pursue her studies in Interior Design at Santa Barbara City College where she met the stringent educational requirements necessary to receive her certification in June 2009.

Through collaborations with talented Santa Barbara architects and designers such as Harrison Design Associates, Lori Smyth Design, Randy Franks Studio, and Peter Becker, AIA, Lindsay has made a name for herself by blending her passion for horses and the equestrian lifestyle with design to create a style she fondly calls ‘Modern Equestrian’ With her growing portfolio of nationwide clients, she established Hunter Design in November 2010 and bears the distinction of being certified by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification

Lindsay has been featured in renowned publications such as Equestrian Living, EqLuxe, Polo Lady, Horse & Style, Horse Illustrated, and Franklin Lifestyle

When she’s not researching a design or pursuing the perfect finishing touches for her latest project, Lindsay enjoys spending time with her husband, her two children, and her horse, Remington.

Ihave been an equestrian since I was five years old Horses aren’t just my hobby: they’re my passion, my lifestyle, and they represent who I am to the core We have a running joke in my house that my natural scent is Au de Cheval

During my years of riding in Pony Club, fox hunting, playing polo, and working for the International Polo Club in the luxury horse world of Wellington, FL, I grew up immersed in the equestrian lifestyle and surrounded by high end equestrian design In high school, my first job was working for Ralph Lauren When I saw how he translated the equestrian lifestyle into a home, I was transfixed

My experiences watching Ralph Lauren’s designs come to life continues to inspire me today in my own work as an interior designer Interior design has been a part of my life since I was a child, in large part because of my father’s work as a real estate investor My dad specialized in high end residential properties. He would take me to jobsite meetings, stone yards, and to look at properties he was thinking about buying for renovation

"Horses aren’t just my hobby: they’re my passion, my lifestyle, and they represent who I am to the core."

I remember one house in particular that we looked at when I was about eight years old As we walked through the house, Dad asked me what I would do to the house if I could make the decisions I began mentally demolishing the house I told him that I would start by removing the green shag carpet and the popcorn ceiling, and the 70s wall paneling would definitely have to go Later, my dad found out from his realtor that the old woman who lived there, had raised her family there, and was now widowed and planning to downsize, was listening to us on the intercom system, and she would absolutely not sell the house to a little girl who was going to tear her beloved house apart Needless to say, my dad lost the sale, but fortunately he had a good sense of humor about it By nine years old, I had announced to the family that I was going to be an interior designer

I shine my best and brightest light when I’m combining my experiences in the equestrian lifestyle with my deep-seated understanding of the elements of interior design I love historic houses with soul, modern farmhouses, old barns, tack rooms, and the trappings of sophisticated country living. There’s nothing I love better than mixing antiques and modern elements to create warm, inviting spaces where individuals and families can live, love, and play – because life is too short to live with bad design.

EQUESTRIAN DESIGN

As equestrians, we know that your love affair with the horse doesn’t begin and end at the barn – so why should you check your equestrian aesthetic at your front door?

I believe that no equestrian home is complete without some well-loved tack. And luckily it is very easy to accomplish- simply rest a faded helmet on top of a stack of books, put a pair of boots in a corner of a room, or hang an old bridle on a wingback chair or on a hook on the wall Adding tack to a space gives character and helps tell the story of the equestrian who lives in that space and the horses who have enriched our lives

I love colors and materials that remind me of being at the barn- brown saddle leather, black boot leather, brass fittings, wood stall doors, green nature I love to mix classic British equestrian patterns like tartan, tweed and houndstooth with modern wools, velvets and linens Whenever I can paint a room green, I do it Green tartan? Even better

I have a soft spot for vintage silver trophies, old polo equipment and interesting horse sculptures I also love one-of-a-kind lamps that end up being conversation starters Take my Hermès boot lamp, for example I have never seen anything like it, probably never will, and all I can think about when I see it is 1 Where is the other boot? Is there a poor soul hobbling around somewhere on one boot? 2 Why did they mount it to a library book? Did they have a grudge against librarians? And 3. FRAGILE Must be Italian

ALICE

When my best friend of twenty years passed away, I was left with the physical remains of our life together- a well worn saddle scratched from running through trees on fox hunts, pilled polo wraps, bridles for every discipline, endless saddle pads covered in her palomino hair, blankets for every season, polo mallets with wood-chipped heads, and trophies we won together as a match made in polo heaven. It didn’t feel right to put all of these treasures in a box to be forgotten, so I created a space where I could see them everyday This room is for her It’s for her memory and to honor the things she left behind

EQUESTRIAN LOUNGE

I designed this barn lounge with the intention of providing some Southern California dressage riders a peaceful retreat to unwind after their intense riding sessions. To achieve this, I curated a warm environment by incorporating a variety of rich textures and colors that exude comfort and relaxation. The space exudes a rustic charm, adding a touch of character to the lounge. One prominent element is the luxurious leather sofa, offering riders a cozy spot to kick off their boots and put their feet up This beautiful and functional lounge serves as the perfect oasis for equestrians to recharge and reflect on their riding experiences in a serene atmosphere.

HISTORICAL RENOVATION

Built in 1890, this historical Georgian home exuded a timeless charm that was evident in its intricate architectural details and classic facade. However, over the years, neglect and the ravages of time had taken their toll, leaving the once-majestic residence in a state of disrepair Potential buyers struggled to envision the home's true potential, finding it difficult to look past the extensive renovations and restoration that would be required. Sensing the need to showcase the grandiose life that the property could offer, we enlisted the expertise of skilled architects and designers to create stunning renderings that brought the house back to its former glory. These renderings captured the essence of perfection its graceful interiors and elegant living spaces all meticulously planned to breathe life into this forgotten gem. With this glimpse into a future of grandeur, potential buyers could now comprehend the immense beauty and possibilities that lay within this historical treasure

Equestrian Home Decor Collection Curated by Interior Designer Lindsay Hunter

As an interior designer, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to bring a client’s dream to life by incorporating their life as an equestrian with the modern comforts of home. I love the search for the perfect piece of furniture or accessory- it makes me feel like a museum curator pulling together one-of-a-kind treasures to create a cohesive collection that tells a story.

For almost as long as I’ve been an interior designer, I have wanted my own shop to showcase a collection of my favorite treasures. I am inspired by the elegance and history of equestrian culture, particularly British, and I designed Modern Equestrian Shop so that equestrian-enthusiasts could create the equestrian look in their own homes. From equestrian artwork to cozy cashmere tartan blankets and saddle leather boxes with brass stirrup buckles, these items are meant to compliment an equestrian’s collection of tack and treasures from the barn to create a cohesive equestrian aesthetic in the home.
