FIRST LOOK WORMLEY BY ALOKA

An Athens, Georgia, company best known for its splendid repurposed vintage textiles has innovated one step further, recently launching the Wormley by Aloka collection. Comprising a 15-piece array of modern frames in hardy walnut, ash, maple and teak, the line revives the work of Edward Wormley, a midcentury master who embraced modern furniture silhouettes without abandoning historical precedent. “We call it ‘highnote craft,’ ” says Aloka founding partner Amy Flurry. “There is a level of familiarity, sophistication and surprise that sets these pieces apart.” Flurry and her team took the opportunity to pore over Wormley’s 2,500-piece archive for Dunbar, where the maestro served as design director for more than 30 years—always

with an eye toward longevity and adaptation. Thus, Aloka’s contemporary take on Wormley’s upholstery—whether tenderly washed or overdyed with botanical pigments—is simply a continuation of his creative spirit. alokahome.com/pages/wormley-by-aloka

OPEN HOUSE When designer Sarah-Hamlin Hastings debuted Fritz Porter in 2015, she gave Charlestonians design resources they previously had to drive hours to find. This past fall, Hastings resolved to double down on her trade-centric customer base, rebooting Fritz Porter as a designer-exclusive, appointment-only showroom with a bonus perk: in-house design services for retail consumers. Fritz Porter’s revamped concept coincided with its November move to a 5,000-square-foot space at the Navy Yard, alongside impressive neighbors like Benjamin Paul Studio and The Urban Electric Co. Here, Hastings can better curate and emphasize her stable of 40 special textile brands, several of them new. “We like to work with artisans and companies that have a strong, cohesive vision,” shares Hastings, who recently welcomed Liberty London, Fanny Shorter, Ceraudo and Jean Monro (right). In tandem with hand-selected antiques and stocked accessories key for completing a beautifully designed room, Hastings will ramp up custom furniture offerings and introduce private-label custom rugs this spring. fritzporter.com

Tavia Forbes + Monet Masters As principal designers of Forbes + Masters, these LUXE Next In Design 99 honorees create spaces that amplify the authenticity of their clients. Here, the duo shares more. What drives your designs? Travel expands our experiences, broadens our horizons and brings a transformative quality to our projects. Recent influences include the vibrant colors of Mexico, the history and decorative arts in Paris, and the unexpected ways buildings blend with South Africa’s natural surroundings. We’re deeply moved by nature and organic materials. Because our style is bold, bringing in those features helps to soften our designs. Any upcoming news? We’re gearing up for several exciting collaborations, including a collection with Ruggable. New products for CB2 are also in the works. forbesmasters.com

Anna-Wooten Loggins Through her eponymous firm, A.Wooten Interiors, this LUXE Next In Design 99 talent is known for fusing modern elements with classical roots. Where do you find inspiration? It all began with my grandmothers. My mom’s mom kept a traditional home replete with antiques and traditional textiles (chintz, silks). My paternal grandmother, on the other hand, had an eye for more modern touches and global influences. What’s on the horizon? My five-year plan includes publishing a coffee table book with my sister; it will combine interiors with recipes— reflective of our shared Southern upbringing. awooteninteriors.com See our Next In Design 99

LAUNCH

A LA CARTE

THE IBERIAN PIG NASHVILLE For The Iberian Pig’s entrée into the Nashville market, Atlanta restaurateur Federico Castellucci III called on Smith Hanes—whose design firm had been fashioning his personal residence—to adapt the brand identity of his Spanishcentric eatery. “Fred wanted rich, dark, sexy,” explains Hanes, whose scheme alongside colleague Lauren Boudreau took shape within a converted 1920s chocolate factory. Here, the plummy tones of the Buckhead outpost deepened to a warm maroon, and the golden ochres metamorphosed into acid green. Custom details by local fabricators abound: from the lush velvet banquettes by Kings Commercial Interiors to the vintage typography printed upon antique mirrors by Blue Door Framing. To finish, an array of Mill & Forge and Janke Studios light fixtures imbue the destination with a fiery warmth that beguiles guests through five distinct spaces—culminating in the lively rooftop boîte. iberianpig.com/nashville

BANNER HOME

Nearing 22 years into his interior design career, Doug Davis has always looked at the home holistically. “I tell my clients, ‘We can stop at the house plans, but we’d love to take you all the way through to towels,’ ” the Birmingham-based talent explains. Banner Home, the textile line he recently launched with his wife, Emily, marks the first step in Davis’ lifestyle-brand aspirations. And come spring, their fastgrowing collection of patterns and prints will expand further to wallcoverings, recycled-fiber performance fabrics and more. Banner Home channels Davis’ abiding love for classic 1920s American style. Each of the designs can be customized at the couple’s chosen Connecticut mill, which tackles both the eco-friendly printing on Belgian linen and any bespoke requests. banner-home.com

MEET THE MAKER CASEY JOHNSON

SCENE

DESIGN

The robust creative community and naturalistic landscape were what beguiled Maryland native Casey Johnson to the idyll of Black Mountain, North Carolina. And in just four years—following two in Asheville—his downtown-area studio practice has mushroomed to five members strong. Leveraging American domestic hardwoods like walnut, maple and white oak, Johnson’s imaginative furniture combines traditional hand carving with modern methodologies. Fusing formal sculpture with everyday functionality, his output focuses primarily on custom commissions for high-end homes. Luxe spoke with Johnson about his creative impetus, his inspirations and his future visions. caseyjohnsonstudio.com You’re a lifelong artist; what spurred your interest in furniture? I experimented with many different media throughout school. I took a lot of influence from Noguchi—not his furniture, but his lesser-known

work in sculpture. Then a Martin Puryear exhibition in Washington, D.C., sparked something in me about the nature of wood and its versatility—with it being an additive form of sculpture (you can build with it) but also subtractive (you can carve into it). Today your practice is ubersuccessful, with four employees assisting you in studio. Why are their contributions so valuable? Due to high demand, I had been carving at such a rapid pace and needed to save my hands a bit. Adding to my team helped me increase production while integrating new technologies. We accomplish so much more and are much more efficient. What’s coming up for you? It’s likely I’ll release a signature collection of my own through a gallery or showroom this year. I also like the idea of finally embarking on other materials such as stone.

The German kitchen. Since 1898. www.hackerkitchens.us | hello@haecker-kuechen.us

Christie Ward and Staver Gray founded their Manhattan-based interior design firm, Ward + Gray, in 2020, and have been buzzing ever since. The duo, who met at Parsons School of Design, take a research-driven approach to design, especially their hospitality projects. A distinct, singular aesthetic has garnered them national and international clientele, as well as a dazzling new product line. Hyper-local: Identifying the four pillars, or themes, of a project is where we begin. From there we research the buildings and locations so that each one has a clear sense of place and history. Case studies: A Florida hotel designed by a female architect is currently in progress and reading about her work has really influenced our vision. As for Wildflower Farms, an Auberge Resorts Collection property we recently completed in Upstate New York, we wanted to make something detailed and funky. You can also see a lot of Arts and Crafts references, which has a foothold up there. Homey spaces: Hotels are a big focus for us, but we look to give them a residential feel: collected, contextual and authentic. Hospitality experiences are temporal, so you want it to feel super immersive, a little bold, or even shocking. DIY: We put so much love and energy into creating custom rug designs that it was sad to see them installed and never used again. Hence, our new line was born! We hope to have smaller furnishings and lighting follow soon. wardandgray.com

ARTFUL IDEAS In 2019, Abby Bangser, former Artistic Director of Frieze for the Americas and Asia, launched Object & Thing, a roving exhibition concept where site-specific installations are held at historically significant homes across the country. By curating each event with hand-picked pieces, she created a new gallery model where the physical encounter is critical. Origin story: Our first exhibition was at architect Eliot Noyes’s home in New Canaan, Connecticut. His family keeps the residence as a time capsule of sorts and I thought a show with contemporary art and design would introduce the house to a new audience. We were appointment only and had a waitlist of more than a thousand people. When we closed, everyone said, ‘Where’s the next one?’ House party: Historic artists’ and architects’ homes already have a creative presence. When we add thoughtfully considered contemporary pieces, a dialogue between past and present is created. Giving back: We’ve partnered with nonprofits and given them a percentage of our sales so that the exhibition doubles as a fundraiser. Shop talk: The forthcoming permanent home of Object & Thing will be at a historic destination and represent multiple artists—including Johnny Ortiz-Concha and Frances Palmer—as a traditional gallery would. We will be able to display their work with greater frequency. object-thing.com

SIDE-BY-SIDE

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND Nature and place are the guiding forces behind the work of Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell, partners at the Los Angeles design firm Laun. Bullock, an architect, and Purnell, a designer, not only have a successful furniture line (expect new materials and colors in the near future) but they also have several home renovations and new builds underway in the L.A. area and beyond. Eyes open: We love the built environment in Los Angeles—it’s liberating and fun—but we’re also influenced by art, fashion and photography. We think about form and color in all aspects. You can’t get stuck in a feedback loop of contemporary architecture. Guilty pleasure: Collecting vintage architecture books for our office library! It’s important to look at a wide array of references for every project. For a new build in Vermont, the client recommended Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn to learn more about New England’s heritage. Artful touches: Connecting clients with local artists to create custom elements is important. We recently commissioned a beautiful shower tile mural by artist Sara Bright for a project in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. State of affairs: People aren’t as interested in the idea of “starchitects” anymore. Today, it’s about real people and real budgets. In the past, spaces were often built in service to the vision, not to the user. launlosangeles.com

SHAKERS & MOVERS RADAR

Aspen Golann’s passion for woodworking was cemented after completing a two-year traditional trade program at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. Today her furnishings, made by hand in her New Hampshire studio, are prized by collectors and will even be on view at Winterthur’s spring show, Transformations, alongside contemporary works. Furthermore, through her teachings at Rhode Island School of Design and founding of The Chairmaker’s Toolbox, Golann is committed to championing equity in the industry. Getting started: I was always a crafty person and eventually decided, I am interested in expressing my artistic instincts. The trade program gave me the technical mastery to tell my story. All are welcome: I started The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to provide educational opportunities for learning traditional, sustainable techniques which have been removed from mainstream furniture production. We’re growing the future of green woodworking (the practice of using unseasoned wood) and seeing a lot of interest in workshops that teach classic methods. Our hope is to create a place for everyone, including historically excluded makers. Good will: Our teachers are volunteers, and our classes are free. We aren’t grant funded, so we’ve relied on educational partners like Winterthur, who have given us teaching space. Roll call: Alumni of the project include Fernanda Barretto, Audi Culver, Katrina Tompkins, Wu Hanyen, Charles Thompson and Chelsea Witt. aspengolann.com, thechairmakerstoolbox.com

TURNING POINT

FRESH OUTLOOK Architectural firm Mattaforma, founded by Lindsey Wikstrom and Jean Suh, is focused on creating a future in which buildings are designed in an ethical and equitable manner—from material choices to planning for deconstruction. Last spring, Wikstrom, who has taught at Columbia and Yale, published Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures, which explores the history and new possibilities of wood. Going forward: Our firm is only a couple of years old, but we’ve already worked across all scales, from a 400-square-foot bar to a 33-acre Rhode Island community. We want to keep challenging ourselves with diverse projects. Guiding ethos: We take our role in climate change seriously. The way we can make an impact is by lowering buildings’ energy usage, the energy required to make materials, and the energy used during a space’s lifetime. End game: We design with deconstruction in mind, too. In thinking about 100 percent circularity (a means of lessening waste and emissions from demolition), there’s a new sense of planning for the end life of a structure. Broad spectrum: Our portfolio includes neurodivergent classrooms for a high school in Queens; a New Jersey craftsman-style home where the idea of traditional layouts was rethought, and a mountain retreat for artists, writers and musicians in Park City, Utah. mattaforma.com

ALL TOGETHER NOW There’s an adage: find a void and fill it. And Brooks Morrison has done precisely that. While working for Moore & Giles, the Virginia native realized that many boutique textile makers were being overlooked. With her knack for marketing and merchandising, she launched The Design Social Pop-Up in 2019, which allows interior designers to connect with makers behind boutique brands. And despite the pandemic causing her to hit pause, she has turned the gatherings into some of the industry’s most anticipated events. Smart thinking: The old way for small businesses to get their products out there was by going door to door, but that isn’t time efficient. I thought, ‘how can I create a model that supports every brand and every sales strategy?’ By establishing a collective and holding events in relevant, inspiring places, it also became fun. It was that simple. Location, location: In the beginning, I looked at tertiary communities with growing interior design practices that didn’t have immediate access to design centers. We now have a footprint across the country, but I still look for evolving markets. Why it works: This idea isn’t unique, but it used to be done by company reps, not the creatives themselves. For small businesses, personal connections are invaluable. New this year: Along with events in Palm Beach, Denver, East Hampton, Darien, Connecticut, and Charlotte, we’ll be building on educational and mentorship opportunities. Happiest moment: When I hear participants say, ‘You’ve moved the needle for me.’ Sharing their work is a privilege. thedesignsocialpopup.com

Baltimore native Alex Delotch Davis, the new executive director of SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta and Lacoste, France, has carved a dynamic path as a leading arts strategist. Her successes have been many—founding cultural media company Gallerie 88 and producing the Driskell Prize gala during her tenure at the High Museum of Art, both of which celebrate Black creative excellence—but for Delotch Davis, this is just the beginning. Lifelong pursuit: What I love about art in all forms is that you can never know it all. There’s always a new thing to learn about: an artist, technique, style or trend. As soon as you become the expert, something else comes along and you must start all over again. Higher learning: My role at SCAD FASH is to develop programming that will enhance the relationship between Atlanta and the university by presenting modern material culture in a way that is visually captivating and inspiring. The opportunity to bring together the realms that interest me—fashion, art, design—in an organization driven by innovation is a remarkable stroke of fate. I am an alumna of SCAD, myself! NextGen: Motherhood is the driving force in every decision I make. I want to show my daughters what passionate work looks like. Ones to watch: Fashion designer Manish Arora, designer Bradley L. Bowers and artist Awol Erizku. Booklist: Daniel Pink’s A Whole New Mind, which talks about the importance of creative thinking in the future economy. The human ability to imagine what could be and then laying out the mechanics to make it happen is what lies ahead. scadfash.org

DREAM WEAVER Textile designer Esha Ahmed may have honed her passion for design while working for architect Peter Marino, but it was her mother’s wardrobe of saris that first sparked her creative inclinations. Born in Bangladesh, Ahmed moved to the United States with her family as a child, retaining a global outlook that continues to inform her textile studio, Makrosha, today. Natural instinct: I come from a unique upbringing and culture where fabrics are revered. In Bangladesh, bright, warm patterns are a part of daily life. Past perspective: My background is in textile conservation and history, and I’ve loved studying the impact of textiles across the globe. Traditionally, they were the ultimate luxury and I want to bring that back. Well made: I collaborate with hand weavers all over the world. It’s important that I work with mills that compensate and celebrate their craftspeople, and that artisans get a say in what they’re making. Creativity needs to be constantly fostered. Family matters: I’m lucky that I’ve gotten to make this my career, but I’ve also worked hard. It’s important for my daughter to see someone who looks like me in charge and creating opportunities for people. What’s next: Last year, I went to Italy to visit new mills that I hadn’t worked with before and who have the capabilities to reproduce my collection of beautiful antique remnants. I can’t wait to see them come to life in a modern way. makrosha.com

Mother Nature is to thank for seashells’ undulating, organic edges which have inspired a curvaceous craze as of late. Designer Leah Ring tactically deployed the playful motif along a kitchen banquette in an L.A. craftsmanstyle abode to add visual interest to an area surrounded by straight lines. “I wanted the detail to feel fun and timeless at once, since the house itself has such a history,” says Ring. Mission accomplished. anotherhuman.la

TABLE FOR TWO Walk into Deux Chats in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood and you’ll feel transported to an age-old French brasserie. This sense of place was precisely the goal of Jon Neidich, Chief Executive of Golden Age Hospitality, when it came to the property’s design, one of many in their growing portfolio. “When I start imagining a new space, I always create a picture in my mind of who is having dinner there,” says Neidich. “I ask myself, ‘What are they like? What are their affectations?’” Inside the Art Nouveau-inspired lounge, sumptuous green-upholstered banquettes mingle with intimate bistro tables and chairs, which lend themselves to the sweet Curtain Lamp by artist Analuisa Corrigan. A lovely white linen shade sits atop the handcrafted ceramic base in a matte sage glaze finished with brass hardware. deuxchatsbk.com, goldenagehospitality.com, lovehouseny.com

The primary bathroom of a New Jersey farmhouse, designed by Michelle Gage, boasts a black-andwhite penny tile floor which pairs nicely with the glazed jade wall tiles, both from Daltile. The cast iron tub is from Signature Hardware.

OUTSIDE THE BOX “We call it ‘The Gentleman’s Farmhouse,’” shares designer Michelle Gage of the circa-1787 New Jersey abode that she restored top-to-bottom alongside general contractor Chadwick Hunter. To bridge the residence’s early American roots with the eclectic mix she envisioned within, Gage looked to black-and-white tiled floors to compose a timeless base. In the kitchen, a checkered blend of honed Bianco Carrara and Nero Marquina marbles were chosen for their luxurious look and feel. “This is a very personal, sacred space for him, so we sourced the best of everything—including the floors,” says the designer. “We wanted each detail to feel very intentional and considered. Plus, there needed to be a graphic element to cut the sweetness of the purple cabinetry.” The surprising hue— a custom Sherwin-Williams blend she describes as “hazy lilac”—was chosen to complement the diffuse sunlight the space

receives throughout the day, and to feel era-appropriate yet bold and dramatic. Shockwaves of color similarly distinguish the client’s primary bathroom (opening spread), where a classic penny mosaic floor with a black subway tile border juxtaposes walls clad in jade tiles arranged in a climbing herringbone pattern that feel a touch unhinged—in the best way possible. Masculine details, including a cast iron soaking tub, mahogany wood vanities and a custom snake-shaped shower door pull lend further intrigue to the period home. “It’s tailored and gentlemanly, yet quirky and fun,” surmises Gage. All in, the design is as vibrant as the merriment it caters to on a regular basis. Shares Gage, “The client manages a band and has many musician friends. He is often cooking up a storm for these jam sessions, or as bands pass through.” michellegage.co; hunterkitchenandbath.com

“Thematically, the idea was to channel a bistro,” shares architect Ryan Salvatore of the playful Connecticut kitchen he conceived alongside designer Graham Veysey. Included in the storage program: A diner-style stainless-steel Eliason pantry door and a wall of cupboards resembling vintage ice boxes. “We wanted to add elements that aren’t so ‘normative kitchen,’ and to use volume in an interesting fashion,” he notes. Hefty Armac Martin hardware was then added to the lower cabinets “to punctuate them in a muscular way.” Grounding the mix is a rosette penny tile floor—a choice as apropos for this charismatic new build as for its antique neighbors down the road. “It’s a traditional home, but a fresh take on traditionalism,” says Salvatore. “The last thing we want is for people to be able to date our projects.” burrsalvatore.com; goodbonesdesign.com

nown for designing beautiful, functional and enduring homes that enrich the lives of their residents, Shope Reno Wharton (SRW) is celebrated for its refined residential architecture. But the firm also designs extraordinary equestrian, golf and hospitality projects. The common denominator is that they are all informed by the expert team’s design philosophy and expertise. Energy efficiency, attention to environment and enjoyment, and dependability over the course of many generations, all guide the process regardless of style, location or scope. Every SRW project results from a comprehensive understanding of the site, along with an intentional

and mindful collaboration between the architect and owner. And each design is imbued with the unique sensibilities one can only derive from a true love of building and craft. Shope Reno Wharton was established in 1981 and is led today by five partners: Jerry Hupy, Arthur Hanlon, Michael McClung, Don Aitken and John Gassett. Their longtime collaboration and devotion to the firm has attracted and retained a skilled staff of talented architects. Together, they offer attentive service and an inspiring portfolio of projects located across the country. Reflected in each commission is the firm’s commitment to architectural character and an understanding of how people aspire to live their lives.

ASK THE EXPERT What is the key to work-life balance? Approaching each day with purpose, whether it be personal or professional, and maintaining a level of curiosity. Share your influences and inspirations. We have always been motivated by the essentials in architecture: light and shadow, solid and void, axis and symmetry, scale and proportion. Historical examples, and places that powerfully utilize these ideas, are always inspirational to us. Up to this point, what do you feel has been your greatest success? That we have created identifiable designs of great character, from the master concept down to the details. They are like great art, which has an impact from a distance and reveals more and more as you study it and move closer.

Project Panorama

By David Cook of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio With Blu Interiors FOR PASSIONATE DESIGN PROFESSIONALS, THE RETURN OF HAPPY CLIENTS TO PURSUE ANOTHER PROJECT MUST FEEL LIKE THE ULTIMATE SUCCESS. FOR PROOF, THERE IS PROJECT PANORAMA. When an existing client approached Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio and Blu Interiors about taking on a new endeavor, the “yes” was resounding. With a single directive of, “Design me a space that you personally would want to live in,” the two teams stepped inside the raw, unfinished framework of a view-centric penthouse and started drawing up plans and making calls. Before long, an eminent list of experts and vendors had taken shape, and the real work began.

When design pros have seemingly boundless creative freedom, inspired environments are sure to follow. This is one factor that made Project Panorama such an immense delight and success for all involved. In a fashion that upholds their reputation for going above and beyond, David Cook and his team at Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio used the blank-slate nature of the penthouse to the client’s advantage. “Because we were starting with an unfinished space, we benefited from greater flexibility, and we used this as an opportunity,” Cook shares. “For example, we worked with a mechanical engineer to determine how we could effectively relocate an HVAC unit from the corner of an upstairs seating area, where it was decidedly in the way.” Also central to the design were inventive features—such as the lyrics to Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” on the bar mirror— that brought the spirit of the penthouse’s Nashville location into the aesthetic.

In Nashville, ongoing development has made high-rise living an emerging concept, and the building in which the Project Panorama penthouse rests is one of downtown’s most notable. Thus, when project lead Kylee Chatham, of Artistic Tile Nashville, was brought into the fold, the excitement was palpable. The resulting selections and installations do their passion justice. “What truly sets this project apart and makes it exceptionally distinctive is the remarkable diversity of materials we employed,” says Chatham, who is the Design Associate at Artistic Tile Nashville. “The full palette possesses striking range, from the captivating backsplashes to luxurious marble structures that boast intricate metal inlays.” This stunning showcase of stone and tile throughout the penthouse came to life as the result of close collaboration with the client and design pros. A full year before material was needed on site, they met at the Nashville showroom to explore—allowing ample time to perfect the design.

What could possibly make a from-the-studs, bespoke design in one of Nashville’s most gorgeous penthouses any better? Perhaps, the added goal of sustainability. This is where EcoDomo® comes in. A groundbreaker in the elegant reuse of biomaterials, the brand crafts Recycled Leather Veneer (RLV™) by finely pulverizing leather remnants into fibers and blending those with a small quantity of natural latex. RLV™ is a highly unique and surprisingly durable leather—denser than red oak hardwood, in fact—and a surface option for floors, walls, cabinetry, countertops and more. “When coupled with our ecofriendly topcoat, the outcome integrates beautifully into interior spaces,” says company President Christian Nadeau. “We manufacture leather and fabricate custom components for millwork or flooring applications. The latter was a game changer for the individuality of this project, and it brought a sustainability and durability into the equation.”

Familiarity with an environment can lead to fantastic results when it comes to creating a home, and this is an idea proven by the involvement of Trace Ventures in Project Panorama. Originally chosen to complete the building owner’s penthouse, as well as the showcase space, Design Galleria and Blu Interiors felt that the firm was an obvious choice for the design-build expertise this endeavor would require. Not only was the residence being created from the blank canvas of an open shell, it also incorporated eye-catching elements that demanded excellence from the Trace team. Rick Dismukes, Director of Residential Construction, elaborates on one of the standout factors: “The lighting alone tells a story, with light bars placed strategically throughout the space to accent the owners’ artwork or highlight design features. The entryway lighting includes LED linear accent strips in the walls, which carry through to the stairway for a warm yet modern effect. The elaborate chandeliers can even be seen from nearby Broadway.”

When one considers the relative magnitude of designing a full penthouse from the roots of an entirely raw space, it becomes apparent that such an endeavor must require a heavy lift. The secret, according to the Blu Interiors team, is teamwork. “It was extremely important that we worked as a cohesive team, communicating, sharing ideas and problemsolving throughout the duration of the project,” says Ashley Oney, who acted as Senior Designer alongside Christy Allen. “This extends beyond our own team, too. We identified and sourced unique statement pieces, often collaborating with manufacturers to create one-of-a-kind items, such as the custom hair-on-hide area rug for the living room and the dramatic beds for each of the guest suites.” Alongside these eye-catching features, Oney, Allen and team used color and texture to capture that “Nashville vibe” in a memorable way. Top One of the most unique elements of the interior design is the graphic, hand-painted and hand-woven wallcovering on the headboard wall of this guest suite. Many feel that hardware is the jewelry of a home—an adornment that serves as the finishing touch. So, when bringing to life a home as sophisticated as Project Panorama, the hardware undeniably plays a starring role. Enter Michele Bagby, Hardware Specialist, and her team at Matthew Quinn Collection. “It is wonderful to have the ability to push design and material boundaries while knowing that your collaborators understand the importance of originality,” Bagby shares. “In this home, leatherwrapped door handles, custom kitchen hardware and antique brass morning bar hardware are all visual delights.” True to the home’s eclectic look and feel, these selections exude a combined luxury, but with a sense of creative juxtaposition. “Brass, leather, horn, rock crystal—Project Panorama is all about mixed materials,” Bagby says. “Each space was thoughtfully and individually designed while relating to the overall aesthetic.”

A stunning piece of art or grand staircase might catch the eye first, but when it comes to achieving that indefinable, certain something that makes a home feel luxurious, the flooring underfoot plays a major role. This is an understanding that drives the team at Textures Nashville. The firm, led by Founder Andrew Denny, brought stabilized French oak flooring with a custom, reactive stain and an ultramatte water-based finish to Project Panorama. “The natural patina of our flooring serves as an organic, timeless foundation for the home,” Denny shares. The Textures team also brought the spirit of collaboration to the project. “We believe in fostering a culture of creativity, open communication and a shared commitment to excellence on every project,” Denny adds. “In fact, we are so passionate about this that we created a podcast on the topic, titled Couture & Construction.” Top Interior design by Blu Interiors is complete with flooring by Textures Nashville and design and build expertise from Trace Ventures. S

ome homes loom large in the memory, first capturing us during childhood, then retaining a sense of mystery and magnetism into our adult years. But few folks get to own the house they dreamed of in their youth. One lucky Mobile, Alabama, couple encountered just such good fortune in 2004, when they purchased a 1929 Tudor revival home originally designed by acclaimed local architect John Platt Roberts. Growing up, Kasey and Jay Stubbs both thought fondly of the Spring Hill abode’s ivy-covered façade, sheltered in the arms of live oaks. Jay recalls riding past the residence on the way to school as a child, always thinking it was unique for the street. Kasey’s grandparents once lived right next door. “I’ve loved this house forever,” she notes. “The camellias my grandmother planted still flourish there to this day.” The couple initially called on friend and designer Katie Kirby to make a few updates to suit their family. But the couple waited more than a decade— after the arrival of their fourth child—to dive in to major upgrades (requesting Kirby return once again for the more ambitious overhaul). Goals included improving daily usability while protecting their characterful home’s original integrity. And architect Robert V. McCown became a visionary partner in that journey. “I’ve always admired this house from afar,” echoes McCown, whose faithful take on the renovation lifted inspiration from old English country style while introducing modern amenities. “We wanted to nod to the history of the house—but still make it fresh.” This time around, Kirby aimed to conjure something “moody, earthy and comfortable, yet dynamic” for her clients. The family appreciated the structure’s traditional divided layout, but they also craved more fluid circulation to fit the bustling pace of their daily lives. McCown responded with practical revisions that incorporated a dedicated powder room and added a small extension to the twin daughters’ bedrooms along with an en suite bathroom. Still, the transformed kitchen is where the architect’s updates are most prominent. Capturing square footage from a small breakfast nook previously adjacent to the cooking area, McCown created breathing room for more cohesive cabinetry and a new streamlined pantry. Now, he notes, the cook space serves as a hub

within the home, eliminating any bottlenecks. Moreover, introducing twin arches along the perimeter smoothed the transition between the kitchen and a new multipurpose space that supports both living and casual dining. General contractor Cay Rogers’ team then painstakingly cut through thick masonry walls to insert a window above the cooktop, highlighting the verdant views while allowing sunlight to pour into the room. “Having natural light shine on those darker finishes really brings them to life,” McCown shares. To add decorative flourishes, the architect composed another Tudor-inspired arch detail to frame this new opening—a motif he repeated on doorways throughout the home, cementing its sense of continuity. Kirby and McCown leveraged their mutual love of wood for the living room, retaining the dramatic barrel-vaulted ceiling but updating its existing plaster walls with white oak paneling—a material that continues to the family room’s reeded built-ins. True to Tudor discipline, that moody warmth extends to the home’s restained floors, dark kitchen cabinetry and tongue-and-groove paneling that “brings in the color of tree bark,” Kirby notes. “It just wraps you like a cocoon.” The designer’s approach is marked by a lightand-dark dichotomy as well as a deft mix of old and new. “I like to incorporate pieces that have history, and these clients own a few that melded beautifully with modern lines,” she shares. Their family heirlooms include a charming Welsh case piece, a romantic four-poster bed and a formal dining set inherited from Jay’s mother. And although the silhouettes and dark wood tones of each could lean traditional, in Kirby’s hands, they became crisp, fresh accents. Further animating her scheme are contemporary artworks commissioned of Southern artists, including local painters Kelley Ogburn and Brent Smith. Outdoors, the past and present grow alongside each other. Landscape designer Greg Blakeney worked in tandem with the owners to incorporate new plantings while preserving their property’s vintage foliage. With a balance of nostalgic and modern elements, the abode now feels fully composed for the Stubbs family, who entertain often. “We love to host at our house, so we wanted a place that felt comfortable, warm and inviting,” Jay notes. Theirs is a home that has already hosted generations, and because of a dedicated design team, it gets to enchant yet another.

Inner Sanctum An artist’s metro-Atlanta studio is a world unto itself, designed as much for creating as for entertaining. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREGORY MILLER

F

or Atlanta artist Daniel Zimmerman, art is about more than beauty; it’s a conversation, an opportunity to connect. “The art world is very social, and I think a studio should be an invitation,” he posits. In 2021, the Mississippi native converted a 5,000-square-foot former antiques warehouse—found about 15 miles south of Midtown—into a luxuriously appointed destination whose warmth and texture soften its cavernous volumes. While one side of this expanse is devoted to Zimmerman’s paintings, giving him liberty to pursue artworks of monumental scale, the other half takes on a more residential feel. Anchored by white linen sofas and draped in textiles, this lavish salon is adorned with a rug of palatial scale beneath a dazzling 6-footwide crystal chandelier. With such opulent trappings, the creative naturally thought it a magical

venue for fetes, particularly his annual masquerade. “So many of us are living out our normal lives, rarely with room for flagrant self-expression,” he observes. “I like to give people an excuse to run wild with their imaginations.” Currently, the multihyphenate is in the throes of several ongoing bodies of work, with his painting collections running the gamut from ambiguous silhouettes to more representative abstract portraits (featuring subjects both real and imagined). “I don’t want to put myself in a box,” the artist asserts. “I just like to find what energizes me and move in that direction.” Common to all of Zimmerman’s paintings is his use of oil—a medium notorious for its mess and odor, but also its old-world luminosity. “I like the traditional aspect of oil, but the thing I love most is the patience it requires,” he explains, alluding to the prolonged drying process that the medium demands. “I tend to move quickly; the process helps me slow down a bit.” To combat linseed oil’s olfactory qualities, the artist likes to add a fragrant

flourish: lavender essential oil. The idea sprung from the elaborate gardens found just outside garage-style doors spanning 100 feet wide, extending his studio to its lush surroundings. “I’m obsessed with nature,” Zimmerman notes. “I’m constantly bringing in fresh herbs to enjoy their scent.” The artist’s passion for plants has also sparked a wildly successful series of topiary paintings. The petite works began as “a way to experiment and get my hands moving before I started on larger pieces,” he explains. “But they have since became a runaway success, with each new release selling out rapidly.” Zimmerman has always been drawn to “old-world style,” recalling trips to Europe where the splendor of its classical estates and “the pageantry of it all” left an indelible mark, he notes. Hence, “My paintings have a historical edge, but also an element of fantasy. In today’s age, we’re fortunate to have the opportunity to become anything we dream. I want viewers to imagine what they could be.”

A voluminous former antiques warehouse now houses Atlanta artist Daniel Zimmerman’s exuberant creative practice; swaths of textiles, cheeky accoutrements and oil paintings define the surroundings of his workspace (opposite). Portraits begin as charcoal, pastel or colored pencil sketches before coming alive via luminous oil pigments (left and below). The impassioned talent often scales a ladder to reach his soaring canvases (bottom).

W

hile driving through the winding, misty mountain roads of Cashiers, North Carolina, Anu and Punit Chadha could practically feel their blood pressure drop. Both busy physicians with two teenage children, the Austin residents were astonished by the area’s lush greenery, fragrant flowers and pleasantly cool temperatures—a far cry from the heat back home. On a whim, they decided to tour a wooded, creek-side property for sale. Stirred by its intrinsic beauty, they made an offer on the spot. “This region spoke to our hearts,” Anu explains. “It’s a hidden gem.” Relying largely on referrals, the Chadhas soon assembled a skilled design team to craft their vacation retreat from scratch. While they wanted their house to blend with the vernacular established by the area’s historic 100-year-old cottages, the couple simultaneously appreciated a more sophisticated and contemporary open floor plan with streamlined modern finishes. Architect Mark Paullin, responsible for many homes in the area, spearheaded the concept. Clad in poplar bark siding and accented by rough-hewn stone detailing on the exterior, his design blends in to the landscape much like a traditional cottage would. But vast walls of gridded glass tip it toward modernity while framing the bosky surroundings. “It’s a house that won’t let you forget you’re in the mountains,” the architect notes. Paullin’s collaboration with his clients—and, soon, interior designers Michelle Berryman and Lori Lambert Moreno—produced a few tweaks to his initial plans, including adapting a lower-level terrace into a glass-enclosed gathering room. Builder Charles Womack and his extended team ensured every aspect of construction was executed with uncompromising expertise. “ ‘We can figure this out together’ was always their approach,” Berryman recounts of the cooperative effort. Taking cues from the wealth of glass and magnificent views, she and Moreno approached the abode as a modernist opportunity. Refined finishes such as quartzite, brass and handblown glass juxtapose wood-plank ceilings and white vertical tongue-in-groove wall paneling. New and vintage furnishings—many upholstered in rich, jewel-toned fabrics—punctuate this neutral backdrop while reminding the Chadhas of the

joyful batik textiles of India, where they both lived as children. Visiting the couple’s colorful, flower-filled Texas home and looking through their personal snapshots—which included pictures of traditional celebratory ensembles—further affirmed the designers’ initial instincts to push the envelope. “These clients were drawn to vibrant colors with more life and spunk than we often get to work with, which was a treat,” Berryman says. To wit, the Chadhas eagerly signed off on the colorful floral wallcovering adorning their firstfloor powder room, its reddish hues perfectly complementing the Calacatta Viola marble vanity’s burgundy veining. “They have fresh flowers delivered regularly to their home in Austin,” Moreno explains. “So, the floral pattern wasn’t a hard sell.” The art selections were equally as exciting: bentwood and metal sculptures, watercolors, encaustics, collages and fiber works—a number of them bespoke commissions. Adds Berryman: “These pieces were a key part of the layering process; they bring so much life into the home.” Large corner windows brighten the kitchen, which captures breathtaking views of a nearby lake. Here, perimeter cabinetry in a creamy tone lives peacefully alongside an oak island inspired by counters found in old-fashioned pharmacies— with both featuring dark quartzite countertops. A bespoke brass-strapped metal hood with a bell-like flare adds an element of drama, its shape echoing the integrated quartzite backsplash behind the range. “The hood drove the bus in this space,” Moreno notes. “It’s a big statement.” The dynamic pink print chosen for the primary bedroom is similarly impactful. Realizing how much the patterned cotton swatch resonated with their clients, the designers even persuaded the manufacturer to expedite its release as a wallcovering, allowing them to line the interior of a window seat, its cushion and pillows all in the same motif. After watching much of the construction progress via video from their Austin home, the Chadhas said they felt like characters in a movie once they were finally able to tour their completed retreat, with snow falling softly on the trees outside. It was a magical moment that became a harbinger for so much more. “Without even realizing it, we had created a legacy home—for our children and their children,” Punit reflects.

esigning a home with a friend is bound to be a deeply personal experience. But for Emily West—owner and director of Anne Irwin Fine Art, one of Atlanta’s most respected art galleries— teaming up with designer Courtney Giles on her family’s new home was even more than that: It was a full-circle moment. The two women first met nearly 20 years ago when the designer was sourcing artwork from the gallery where Emily worked at the time. “We soon became good friends,” recounts Emily, who immediately admired Giles’ eye for interiors. “I told her, ‘Whenever I buy my big-girl house, I’m going to have you design it, and it’s going to be amazing.’ ” Years later, Emily and her husband, Alex West— founder and CEO of ArtCloud—followed through on that promise, enlisting Giles not once, but twice. The first occasion was for a midcenturyleaning residence the designer appointed accordingly with modern furnishings. But as their family grew, the Wests began to look for a more spacious abode that would allow their two young daughters room to grow. They found a classic Buckhead estate that, although beautiful, was a departure from the modernity the couple was accustomed to. “I asked Courtney to come look at it with us,” Emily recalls. “I knew it had really good bones; it just needed a bit of a revival.” Despite the contrasting disciplines of the two dwellings, Giles’ expertise translated seamlessly. “It was clear we would need new furniture to fit the style of this home,” Emily says. “But it was exciting to work with Courtney to figure out how we could insert our personalities and have our funkiness interspersed with the more traditional aspects of the architecture.” To capture the West’s youthful spirits while counterbalancing their home’s classical envelope, Giles embraced texture, pattern and color with enthusiasm. “Given our shared history, I already understood their preferences,” the designer explains. “Emily and Alex are not neutral people; I always knew they were going to be more colorful than the average client.” Considering the couple’s art-centric lives, the true anchors of the design were always destined to be their artworks. The West’s meaningful

collection influenced the lively attitude of each room. In almost every case, Emily and Giles began with a specific art piece and its preferred location, then they’d decide the color of the side chair, pillows and objets to coordinate. “It made the design process really fun,” Emily shares. “Because I own a gallery, I notice many people coming in for art last, but I liked the idea of approaching the artwork first, before the fabrics.” In the living room, for example, Giles pulled a pop of cobalt for the sofa pillows directly from the Kathleen Jones painting hanging above them. In the same space, an iconic nail polish drip painting by Scott Ingram serves as a focal point while tying in the vibrant reds and blues of the original scenic wallpaper in the neighboring dining room. Blue-green hues lifted from this hand-painted panorama directly inspired the palette of these two formal spaces as well as the foyer. The designer then dialed up the picturesque mural’s slight touches of periwinkle and red—repeating the former on the cane dining chair seats, the latter on the bespoke banquette and buffet lamps’ shades. “These jewel tones kept coming up in our design conversations,” Emily recalls. “So it was great to see them come to life.” The ripple of colors from room to room also reinforced traffic flow for entertaining. “We wanted these formal spaces to be versatile enough to accommodate how much Emily and Alex like to host,” notes the designer, whose clients frequently throw everything from spirited happy hours to big formal dinners. “We greet people with champagne at the front door; we love having guests gather and mingle in our foyer,” Emily reveals of the home’s central hall. “The Wests are cheerful, fun, happy people,” Giles concludes. “They didn’t necessarily want their house to look like everyone else’s, so they were willing to take a few risks—which paid off because it’s so uniquely them.” Emily is equally as delighted that her and Alex’s unconventional tastes were embraced. “What’s amazing is that Courtney knew our personalities well enough to make suggestions that we almost always agreed with. I wanted everything to be colorful, lively and bright,” adds the homeowner, using descriptors that could just as easily apply to the works hanging in her gallery. There is a common saying used to sum up this concept: Life imitates art. Or, perhaps in this case: Art imitates life.
