COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF

Today’s kitchen serves many roles, from entertaining hub to daily gathering place, but its culinary function remains paramount. For designer Martha Dayton’s recent clients, that priority guided every goal. “The husband is an avid cook, so having his cookbooks close at hand was a top priority,” she notes.

Working with Rehkamp Larson Architects, Dayton’s team designed two freestanding anchor walls—one for refrigeration, the other for cooking— that define the space without blocking lake views. Those vistas inspired the material palette as well: custom cabinetry in a serene blue and limestone countertops that echo the shoreline. “The appliances also serve to define the shape and flow of the space,” Dayton adds. Collaboration between architect, builder, tradespeople and client produced a suite tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle. A Sub-Zero Designer Series refrigerator and freezer column combo, 48-inch Wolf range, convection steam oven and custom copper hood deliver both exceptional function and distinctive style.

A DEFINING SUITE For many design pros, certain manufacturers simply speak their language. For Amy Storm, that brand is Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. After visiting a factory and witnessing U.S.-based production firsthand, she became a devoted fan. Her enthusiasm is clear in a recent project, where the refrigerator, range, hood, double ovens and dishwasher all hail from Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Design options made an impact, too. “This client came with a well-defined personal design DNA, consistent across clothing, travel, pursuits—and even food management,” Storm explains. That vision shines through the glass-front Sub-Zero refrigerator, reflecting the homeowner’s passion for nutrition and organization. “Looking over to the range, the red knobs were perfect for these purists, complementing the veining in the marble tops and backsplash.” Beyond the main kitchen, Storm placed a Cove dishwasher in both kitchen and pantry, with an extra Wolf oven and microwave tucked into the latter to ease the visual load.

BACKDROP TO LIFE Ah, the heart of the home. Designer Whitney Ray breathes fresh life into the phrase: “A kitchen is a core part of lifestyle, and, as such, it reflects who someone really is—practical or playful, classic or adventurous.” For the new owners of a Linda MacArthur-designed masterpiece, that identity centered on two essentials: showcasing art and accommodating dogs and children. Ray and her Wyeth Ray Interiors team crafted a home that balances exquisite display with livable ease. The kitchen embodies timeless brightness while delivering drama through a 48-inch Wolf range and pewter hood. “Sleek lighting and modern furnishings kept the aesthetic from feeling too traditional, while integrated Sub-Zero columns perfected the look,” Ray notes. Having specified Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove for nearly 15 years, she praises their reliability. A favorite addition? The plumbed Wolf convection steam oven, which she loves because there is “no fussing with water trays like other models.”

W H O L LY I N T E G R AT E D “For us, a space isn’t complete until it feels impossible to replicate.” That belief guides Stacy and Traci Richardson of Paul + Jo Studio, whose work is defined by individuality. Their latest kitchen proves the point: baseboard-to-ceiling walnut paneling, a gleaming gold range hood with coordinating hardware and striking imported Italian Viola marble, which is even inset into the custom Wolf cooktop. Structural limitations prevented expanding the footprint, so the designers shifted focus.

“We emphasized sculptural presence and flow instead of size,” Stacy explains. The result is a kitchen that maximizes space while exuding artistry. For function, the choice was easy. “Our love affair with Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove began with Wolf’s performance,” Traci shares. “Living with these appliances daily showed us they are what our clients deserve.” With Sub-Zero’s preservation, Wolf’s precision and Cove’s whisper-quiet innovation, the wow factor is matched by lasting performance.

RICH WITH PERSONALITY

At the center of timeless design lies one factor: personality. In the kitchen, this often takes the form of choreography—how homeowners live, cook and host. For Amy Aidinis Hirsch and her team, capturing a client’s voice is paramount. Designing her own kitchen, Hirsch showcased her ethos.

“I did not want what everyone else in New England has,” she says. The resulting space features 200-year-old reclaimed beams, a walnut island and a suite of Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances. “At the center, a 42-inch French-door refrigerator sits seamlessly paneled with oversize custom walnut and blackened-steel handles, making a sculptural statement,” she notes. To the left, Wolf M Series wall ovens promise holiday meals made simpler, while a 48-inch cooktop range delivers Michelin-level performance. A hidden pantry holds a wine refrigerator, refrigeration drawers and a microwave. Hirsch enthuses, “With Italian heritage and my grandmother’s cooking at heart, the kitchen is sacred.”

PERFORMANCE + PRESENCE When a design firm sets its mission as “fusing styles, time periods and cultures to create interiors that defy the cliché,” something extraordinary is inevitable. Such is the hallmark of Benjamin Johnston and his team, known for unexpected aesthetic storytelling. In one recent culinary showpiece, a modern take on Hollywood Regency contrasts the home’s classical moldings, archways and ornamental details, oozing moody glamour. “Symmetry was a key influence, both visually and functionally,” Johnston explains. Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer columns on one side mirror wine columns on the other, framing a Wolf range with eight burners and brushed-brass knobs beneath a custom patinaed brass hood. Material choices like Nero Marquina marble, brass cabinetry and vintage Murano sconces extend the sense of warmth, age and quiet drama. “They are essential to the architecture of the room, where every decision supports both presence and performance.”

S O M M E L I E R ’ S H AV E N Many residential designs draw from their surroundings, especially when nestled in landscapes as striking as Sonoma Valley. Designer Lindsay Gerber embraced this approach in a 7,085-square-foot, 5-acre renovation conceived as a weekend retreat for a young San Francisco family. Central to her vision was showcasing nature. “The old kitchen was heavy with ornamental French country millwork, and vineyard views were hidden behind a wall,” Gerber recalls. “We opened everything up, connecting the space not only to the views but also two dining areas and a formal living room.” With the structure reimagined, she pursued a palette echoing olive trees and vineyard hillsides. Appliance selection proved the easiest decision. “Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove are what I have at home, and everyone knows they’re the best,” Gerber says. This Wine Country stunner features a Wolf range, Sub-Zero refrigerator and, naturally, a wine refrigerator—an essential in the region.

Known for her signature balance of comfort and elegance, she recently unveiled a fiveyear, whole-home project featuring three custom kitchens. The common thread? Her trusted partner, Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. “With two sons in sports constantly raiding my own refrigerator, I know the performance and panache of these brands firsthand,” she shares. “They offer reliability you can trust in timeless, refined design.” In the main kitchen, a panel-ready refrigerator and dishwasher integrate seamlessly into a palette of custom cabinetry with brass hardware, a striking stone that wraps countertops, backsplash and hood in continuous flow, and accents of green beloved by the homeowners. Such was the case for Kaitlyn Wolfe, tasked with creating a Balinese-inspired retreat of tranquility, moody color, indoor-outdoor flow and smart technology. In the kitchen, fulfilling that vision hinged on Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Wolfe’s connection to the brand deepened after visiting its headquarters.

“I learned their history, saw their craftsmanship and experienced their farm-to-table ethos,” she shares.

It all served as inspiration in one of her latest projects: a kitchen wrapped with large-format porcelain tile, stone-like finishes and shou sugi ban veneer. Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances integrate seamlessly into the millwork, complementing the warmth and depth of the materials. They also complement a principle by which Wolfe designs. “Sustainability is embedded into how we build and specify,” she adds. “These products are designed to perform for decades, not just a season.”

For one such household, designer Allison Lind proved a game-changing hire. “As designers, we’ve already waded through the options and identified the brands that stand out,” she explains. For this project, she envisioned a palette that felt creamy, bright, warm and modern, while ensuring functionality drove every decision—especially in the kitchen. The design includes a walk-in pantry with a grocery unloading zone, a hidden coffee bar and a cozy breakfast nook. For appliances, Lind recommended her trusted partner: Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. This magazine is about more than beautiful rooms; it’s also a celebration of the people behind them. Not only do we champion the designers, architects, builders and landscape architects who create the homes we publish, we also focus on the artisans and brands that bring them to life. It’s our honor to amplify their work and share it with an audience that truly values home design.

I also want to take a moment to thank our team. It requires enormous passion to tackle the Herculean task of producing thousands of pages of original content for every issue. From the discerning eyes of our editorial staff to the relationships of every regional team member, I am deeply grateful for their unwavering dedication. Of course, we are here thanks to the vision of our CEO and founder Adam Sandow and the work of founding editor-in-chief Pam Jaccarino, and we are all grateful for their inspiration and efforts.

It’s fitting that we end our year of anniversary celebration with a special feature, The Story of Home, honoring design visionaries. CRAFTSMANSHIP HAS ALWAYS BEEN at the heart of timeless design. In a world where

machine-made, mass-produced imports dominate the market, few companies remain committed to the artistry of hand-forged creation. Ashore Lighting, founded in Dallas in 1990 and led today

by CEO Kash Ashore, is one of those rare firms. What began as a small table-making business has evolved into a nationally recognized lighting brand, celebrated for its third-generation blacksmithing heritage and dedication to American-made quality. “Our philosophy is to create our products in the United States and stay true to handmade rather than mass production,” Ashore explains. Drawing inspiration from nature—tree branches, mountainsides and old European design—the company crafts chandeliers and fixtures that function as both illumination and art.

As they celebrate their 35th anniversary alongside Luxe’s 20th, Ashore notes, “The fact that we still build our products the same way they did 50 years ago is what separates us from the rest.”

Talk about your company’s origins. We began in Dallas, Texas, in 1990 as a small table-making business. Over time, we evolved into a full lighting company, officially launching that arm in 2001.

Today, we remain a third-generation blacksmithing family, hand-forging wrought iron lighting and accessories that stay true to our roots.

What sets your work apart in the marketplace? The industry has largely shifted to machine-made, mass-produced imports, and hand-forged production has nearly vanished in the U.S. Our commitment to building pieces one at a time—crafted like they were 50 years ago— makes us unique. Recently, we’ve also begun combining iron with onyx and quartz sourced from Brazil and Mexico, creating lighting that feels organic and truly one-of-a-kind.

Where do you find creative inspiration?

Nature plays a central role in our designs. We look at tree branches, mountain textures and organic patterns, blending them with old European influences to form chandeliers and fixtures that are both timeless and original.

How do you see your company’s role in today’s design industry? We believe being a U.S.-made manufacturer is increasingly important. By creating products by hand, as artisans have always done, we preserve a tradition of craftsmanship that resonates deeply with clients seeking authenticity.

What legacy do you hope to leave? Lighting should not only serve a function but also act as a piece of art. We want our legacy to be a portfolio of designs that illuminate spaces while reflecting the enduring value of craftsmanship.

Ann Sacks has tapped longtime collaborators interior designer Kelly Wearstler and artist Andy Fleishman to expand their tile collections with new textural designs that bring a bold dimensionality to surfaces.

Wearstler’s latest collection, Made Billow, offers two styles, one muted and one smooth, each in square and rectangular shapes, that cleverly play up light and shadow. The L.A.-based designer has also added 10 new saturated color options to her handmade, ombre-glazed stoneware collection, Fade, including Sunset, a peachy pink, and Shadow, a wash of navy blue over claret. Both collections are made in Portland, Oregon, where Ann Sacks was founded in 1981. Meanwhile, Fleishman's Pillowed Leather collection marks his fifth collaboration with the company. Produced in his North Carolina studio, the 6x6-inch tiles are crafted to resemble leather, with realistic graining, subtle color variations and a curved surface that gives them an “upholstered” look. Venerable textile design firm Schumacher is no stranger to partnering with outside artists and designers. In fact, its first collaboration was with French fashion designer Paul Poiret—in 1930. “Collaborations bring a different point of view,” says the brand’s chief creative officer, Dara Caponigro. “They allow us to explore sensibilities that we might not otherwise on our own.” Two of their recent artist collaborations offer very different looks, but both weave in Schumacher’s distinct DNA. The first, with Colette Cosentino, came about when Caponigro discovered the artist’s painted canvases covering huge swaths of chain-link fence at the under-construction botanical garden Lotusland in Montecito. “My work is not loud; it whispers the imaginary,” Cosentino says. “I get to play like a child—spontaneously painting gardens, rivers, trees and birds.” Those charming scenes of flora and fauna are now represented in a line of ethereal wallcoverings. Upstate New York artist Richard Saja reached out to Schumacher when he was working on a solo show for the Musée de la Toile de Jouy in France to ask for toile he could embroider. Soon, La Liberté Americaine was underway. “Every single inch is embroidered by hand and completely one of a kind,” Saja says of the fabric. “I wanted to capture, in the most color-saturated way possible, the full range of diversity inherent in the American spirit.” schumacher.com

In San Marino, the Huntington Library's collection of unfinished works by William Morris, figurehead of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and J. H. Dearle, his chief collaborator, is finally having its moment after curators invited Morris & Co. to explore the materials, sparking a new collection. The Unfinished Works is comprised of 26 designs for wallpapers, borders and fabrics, and the new patterns—Daisy & Oak, Persian Tulip and Cornflower, among them—feel immediately authentic as each was completed with the help of the company’s archive. The palettes, too, were chosen from period logbooks, with colorways like Madder, Flax, Indigo and Plum. “This is a collection like no other, a unique chapter in the Morris & Co. story,” says Jessica Clayworth, the company’s lead designer. “We hope Morris and Dearle will be proud that we’ve followed the design trail they set out, bringing these designs to life as a creative team spread over the centuries.” sandersondesigngroup.com

DON’T MISS IT LIGNE ROSET’S “GUARICHE: THE VISIONARIES” EXHIBITION

Ligne Roset’s exhibition of Pierre Guariche’s midcentury furniture designs will be on view at its West Hollywood showroom through December.

It is a treasure trove of modernist pieces newly reproduced by the brand, which recently acquired the designer’s archive. “Pierre’s work hasn’t received the recognition it deserves,” says Simone VingerhoetsZiesmann, executive vice president of Ligne Roset in the Americas. “With 18 pieces—and counting—brought back to life, it’s an honor to share his prolific archive as we work to revive it.” The exhibition demonstrates how comfortably the designs, most of which were created in the 1950s and 1960s, suit today’s lifestyle. Classic pieces on view include the Tonneau chair, the first mass-produced plywood seat in France; the sinuous Vallée Blanche chaise, designed as part of Guariche’s work for a ski resort in the French Alps; and the G10 Sofa (right), with its signature wood-arm design. ligne-roset.com

ESKAYEL Brooklyn design studio Eskayel has opened in Encinitas. “Nick, my husband and business partner, and I wanted to be close to family, and we were craving a more nature-based lifestyle,” says founder and creative director Shanan Campanaro, who grew up in San Diego. Her painterly, naturalistic fabric, wallpaper and rug designs feel “dreamy, abstract and edgy all at once,” she explains. New in the showroom are the latest colorways, Ricotta and Arugula, in the studio’s recent Nonna’s Lace collection, an homage to Campanaro’s grandmother. Rugs inspired by setting up her new SoCal home will soon be on offer, too. When visiting the by-appointment shop (it’s not far from popular Moonlight State Beach, where the couple likes to surf), don’t miss works by local artisans they’ve embraced in the space, including stained-glass doors

STANDING STRONG KITCHEN DESIGN GROUP Caren Rideau lost her studio and showroom, Kitchen Design Group, in the Palisades Fire, but the disaster only deepened the designer’s commitment to her craft. This fall she reopened at 30 th Street and Ocean Park in Santa Monica.

“It’s intentionally smaller, exuding a sense of home that invites our clients in as if they were stepping into their own kitchens,” she says. Rideau plans to host cooking and wine workshops in the new space, noting, “the front gallery features fully functional Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, allowing us to showcase our products in action.” In the weeks following the fire, the designer received calls from past Palisades clients eager to discuss rebuilding. “In that moment, it became clear that I needed to persevere—not just for my own sake but for the sake of our community,” she says. “Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and renewal. world into the intimacy of home, the foyer is responsible for first impressions, offering residents and guests a gracious welcome. Aesthetically, it should set the tone for the interiors, establishing a design throughline and teasing what’s to come. And, as “a transitory space that often provides circulation to other primary rooms,” a thoughtful choreography of furnishings arranged for flow is crucial, explains Benjamin Johnston. Like the name suggests,

the living room is where so much of life happens.

As the premiere gathering space, the challenge lies in crafting a scheme that caters to hosting a crowd and daily downtime alike. It’s a balance best achieved with multiple seating areas unified by a cohesive color palette and studied approach to proportion that plays to the scale of the architecture. And, of course, no living room is complete without an emphasis on comfort. As designer Kevin Dumais notes of this Connecticut interior, the space “should foster an environment of warmth, intrigue and hospitality.”

Q&A IN CONVERSATION Hinkley has such a rich history. How has the brand evolved over the decades? We began in 1922 as an outdoor lantern company, offering traditional and contemporary collections to bring style and craftsmanship to the exterior of the home. Over the decades, Hinkley has expanded into landscape lighting, ceiling fans and decorative indoor collections. Each new category was thoughtfully added to meet changing lifestyles and to extend our reach into every area of the home.

What distinguishes Hinkley from others in the industry? We pride ourselves on being a complete solution provider. As outdoor living has grown, we’ve introduced chandeliers, fans and wet-rated fixtures to bring cohesion and comfort to patios, pool areas and beyond. Many of our products integrate advanced LED technology and smart-home connectivity, allowing customers to design beautiful spaces that are also efficient and easy to manage.

Where does your design inspiration come from? Our team travels extensively across the Americas and Europe, always exploring architecture, fine art and natural materials.

end each day, a bathroom should “feel like a little slice of heaven as we wake and unwind,” muses designer Kat Lawton. For a primary bath in Washington, Lawton delivered on that sentiment with a thoughtful medley of natural materials in neutral tones crowned by a sumptuous soaking tub. Nothing is more imperative to health than quality sleep, which makes a restful bedroom a vital commodity. Where do you find inspiration? The Vervain team finds inspiration in the most obvious and the most unexpected places. Artists and art exhibitions, couture fashion, television and movie interiors, nature, travel and textile documents constantly provide ideas. The work of interior designers— both historic and current—also kindles creativity, as does speaking to our customers about their needs and preferences—which often inspires a new design or color direction.

What’s new? Our two newest collections— Elysium and Quintessential—speak to the spirit of the Vervain brand. Our fourth collection with Barry Dixon, Elysium is inspired by nature, which can be seen in the patterns, colors and sensibilities of all the textiles. Textural surfaces and an ethereal quality of color and light are foundational elements of this exciting collection.

Concurrently, Quintessential fabrics, wallcoverings and silks speak to Vervain’s history. Launched in two parts over the last year, this collection interprets the most iconic Vervain patterns and colors in fresh, new directions.

A great wet bar is a must-have in

today’s haute homes, with designers taking the opportunity to turn an entertaining amenity into a moment of drama and glamour. “I always say the best bars are part utility, part theatre,” muses Eddie Maestri, the creative mastermind behind this chic exemplar, whose design cocktail calls for mirrored surfaces, standout lighting fixtures and a moody palette.

Functionally, a great bar needs to work hard, with artfully concealed storage, refrigeration and the prerequisite prep sink, but aesthetically, it’s a place to take risks, says the designer.

Q&A LASTING LEGACIES How do you define a visionary? A visionary is one who sees beyond what stands before them.

Where others see a kitchen, they see life unfolding.

Visionaries refine until what remains feels inevitable, as though it could never have been any other way.

What sets you apart in your field? To be a visionary in Los Angeles is no small feat. This city is a place where trends are born and forgotten in a season. Yet, for 40 years, Cooper Pacific Kitchens has stood steady, not by chasing what’s new, but by creating what is lasting.

Where do you find inspiration? I find my inspiration in beauty. A warm palette can make us linger. A beautifully framed view can turn coffee into ritual. When a space makes you feel something, you move differently.

What challenges have shaped your career?

There’s the weight of legacy: the responsibility to preserve what was built before me, while also pushing the company forward. That pressure could have been limiting, but I chose to see it as a foundation.

What advice would you share with emerging professionals? Luxury design is not immune to downturns. There will always be cycles and challenges, but no matter the climate, you must deliver quality and service at the highest level. That consistency builds trust, and trust is the foundation of a lasting business.

What’s next for the firm? We’re continually curating the best of the best—from collaborations with leading designers to partnerships with brands like John Michael Studio and Thomas Hayes Studio. With a new showroom display ahead, it’s all about bringing more beauty, craftsmanship and luxury to the city.

Q&A DESIGN CHOPS What does being a visionary mean to you?

A visionary sees the world from a fresh perspective and delivers something entirely unexpected. It’s about translating ideas into spaces that surprise and delight.

What sets you apart in your field? I’ve designed over 1,000 restaurants, bars and nightclubs. As someone who has always loved going out, I bring a personal perspective on why guests return time and again. Each project is about elevating the concept and making it better than before.

What guiding philosophy drives your work? Our mantra has always been “great projects for great people.” We believe amazing is our only option, and my team of overachievers works to exceed expectations at every step.

Where do you find inspiration? Inspiration is everywhere—in shadows, in nature, in the movement of Los Angeles itself. Design may be static, but how people interact with space is fluid. That human energy informs my work.

What challenges have you faced?

Consistency, inspiration and navigating permitting hurdles are ongoing tests. But obstacles always become opportunities.

If we can’t move them, we change direction and make the result even better.

What advice would you give emerging professionals? Work in the future. What we create doesn’t exist yet, so it’s our responsibility to bring forward new ideas.

What’s next for Kelly Architects? We’re celebrating 24 years in business and expanding with a new executive committee. What excites me most is creating environments that last: restaurants designed not just for a lease, but for decades of hospitality.

Q&A FORWARD MOTION How do you define a visionary? To me, a visionary is someone who sees things differently.

They stand at the leading edge of design not necessarily for the sake of being different, but by innovating in ways that inspire others.

What inspired you to launch your firm?

After several years as design director for a multifamily home builder, I found myself increasingly drawn to high-end residential interiors. When the market shifted in 2005, I took a leap of faith and started my own firm. My very first client was residential, and the work grew from there.

What milestones stand out most in your career? Reaching our 20th anniversary this year is a significant one. We’ve grown from a threeperson office to a thriving team of nine, expanded into national and international projects and hired younger talent who challenge me to think differently and bring fresh ideas.

Where do you find inspiration? Travel has always been my greatest source of inspiration.

Whether in Europe, Central America, California or the North Shore of Minnesota, I find sparks in both natural beauty and built environments.

I’m also continually moved by artists and their ability to create with their hands.

How do you approach challenges in design?

Design always comes with obstacles, from code restrictions and budget limitations to logistical issues. Yet I’ve learned that those very challenges often lead to smarter, more creative solutions, making the final outcome even stronger.

What’s next for your firm? We’re working on exciting projects in California, Utah and Colorado, including compact homes where every detail must be intentional. We’re also exploring a potential retail collaboration as we celebrate our 20th year.

Q&A HISTORY + LEGACY What inspired you to start your firm?

I grew up working on my family’s brownstone on the Upper West Side, a home built in 1864 that was always in need of repair. I loved restoring it with my dad, and those experiences not only helped pay for college but also sparked my desire to launch my own company. I began with little more than signs on lampposts and a phone number, but that hands-on passion became the foundation of SilverLining.

What philosophy guides your work? Respect is at the core. Early on, as a subcontractor, I experienced how poorly tradespeople were often treated. I vowed to create a company where employees, subcontractors, designers and clients felt valued. My grandfather, who led the Hatters Union in New York, instilled in me the importance of dignity in work, something I carry forward today.

What project best encapsulates your vision? Recently, we completed a four-floor residence in a prewar building. The project brought together engineers, architects, expeditors and artisans from multiple states, all working toward a client’s vision on a tight timeline. Seeing the joy of the owners moving in was the ultimate reward.

What challenges have shaped your path?

Recessions, difficult projects and team turnover all tested me. But I view setbacks like a pitcher views a bad game—you learn, adjust and move forward.

Joining Vistage, a peer group for CEOs, has also been instrumental in helping me adapt and grow.

How do sustainability and innovation factor in? I’ve always been mindful of health and the environment, values I credit to my mother. During the pandemic, I pursued Passive House certification, which is a milestone that now guides our approach to healthier, more energy-efficient construction.

What’s next for SilverLining? We’re expanding with projects in Los Angeles, Miami and the Hamptons, supported by a new director and chief of staff.

LOS ANGELES Entering Harbinger is like being let loose in a treasure trove, where a kaleidoscopic array of fabrics, furnishings, wallcoverings and objects vie for attention—yet each vignette feels harmoniously arranged. That “curated chaos” is exactly what designer and owner Joe Lucas is after. “Harbinger isn’t a calm, minimalistic showroom; I mix the lines we carry like I would in a residential project— only more wildly,” he explains. The retail space is an arm of his firm, Lucas Studio, Inc., and an idea factory. He might cover a vintage chair in an unexpected fabric, display it beside a contrasting wallcovering, and pepper in European-sourced curiosities.

LIGHT ON WHITE DESIGN STUDIO For a sprawling sun-drenched penthouse in downtown Miami, interior designer Alizee Brion kept to a soothing, neutral palette with accents of blue and green peppered throughout. But for the residence’s two powder rooms, she took a different approach, deploying what she calls “a concentrated expression of color” inspired by the Biscayne Bay views. With the alluring colors of the water serving as muse, Brion succeeded in creating spaces with “wow factor.” Take the blue-swathed bath (previous page), the crown jewel of which is a striking vanity carved from blue agate. The windowless space led Brion to embrace an overall moody vibe, explaining that “in the context of a Miami condo, which is always flooded with natural light, it’s an unexpected contrast.”

In a separate powder room (shown right), Brion selected a Calacatta green marble for the pedestal sink. A side-mount faucet keeps the vanity contemporary and minimal, while a plaster wall finish provides a resilient surface. “Plaster is extremely practical in a bathroom because of its waterproof qualities,” says the designer. “It allowed us to forgo a backsplash and provided a texture with depth and movement that has a hand-crafted quality, which we love to incorporate in our designs.” lightonwhite.com

For the second powder room, Brion opted for a vanity crafted from Calacatta green marble sourced from Arca. Holly Hunt sconces abut a Bower Studios mirror. The walls are finished in Galápagos Green by Tadelakt.

NATURAL SELECTION THE WISEMAN GROUP “In this bathroom, it’s all about the stone,” says Megan Munoz, associate design director at The Wiseman Group. After walking past this semi-precious quartzite at IRG Stone many times before, hoping to find the perfect client for it one day, the opportunity to use it finally presented itself with the owners of this Palo Alto residence. Imagined for the home’s lower level, where entertainingoriented spaces like a media and billiard room are located, the powder room takes on an apropos club-like feel. With dramatic contrast and veining, the dynamic blue-green stone covers two walls and was also used to create a floating sink and lower storage shelf. The surrounding design elements, including a floor-to-ceiling mirrored backsplash, further enhance the stone’s presence. But for designer Jeff Schlarb, the dated backdrop turned out to be the perfect canvas for his signature mix of patterns and materials. “I find it restful and demure rather than overwhelming,” remarks Schlarb of the masterful blend.

The key, he explains, is to combine structured patterns, like the green vertical clé ceramic tile, with more organic ones, such as the swirling Broad Strokes wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries used here.

HARD-WON EXPERTISE CAN STILL BE ATTAINED through formal training. Claus Pummer, Co-Owner of SAMINA Sleep with his wife Denise, began learning his trade as a teenager. He explains, “I started my professional career at 16 as an apprentice to a carpenter in a small German town. I then worked and studied for a decade before earning the title of Meister Schreiner— Master Cabinetmaker.” He then designed, manufactured and imported furniture for private residences and established hospitality brands. After selling furnishings for the home and garden, Claus decided to focus the majority of his energies on SAMINA. Denise agreed and a move to Southern California soon followed. She shares, “SAMINA provides us with fulfillment due to our many happy clients. haracter, personality, soul—all the aspects that create those delightfully warm and fuzzy feelings of “home” are difficult to infuse into a developer-built house, no matter how tastefully constructed. That pivotal layer of depth and warmth is what Sierra Fox’s clients realized, over dinner with friends, that they desired for their own newly built residence, purchased partially furnished. The home they were dining in that night had been designed by Fox, so the couple soon reached out to her themselves.

Their Brentwood home felt primed for a more personal stamp, recalls the designer. She discovered an approachable, airy, modern farmhouse awash with natural light and mostly white interiors. It proved to be the ideal baseline to support the addition of the rich, earthy palette her clients were drawn to, as well as the midcentury shapes and heirloom-quality pieces they loved. As the couple was transitioning from a smaller and more traditionally attired home, plus navigating a new chapter as empty nesters, Fox acted as both a designer and discerning curator. She repurposed beloved pieces, brought in a mix of new and antique finds, and exercised balance and restraint. “Our task was to craft cohesive interiors with a comfortable and collected feel by working through and uniting what felt true to the homeowners and to this house,” she explains.

What the couple decided felt true, ultimately, were warm, charismatic spaces that are refined yet relaxed enough to welcome their college-age children (and the family dogs). Fox responded with pieces that thoughtfully walk this line. The living room’s coffee table, for instance, features a timeworn slab of walnut that displays its dings, dents and knots with dignity, inviting the family to kick back worry-free. “What our clients really love are things with patina and a sense of life,” the designer affirms. An antique rug imbues the living room with a laid-back elegance, and slipcovered sofas in an unexpected mustard hue are visually impactful yet practical. Overall, the homeowners weren’t afraid to lean into

warmer colors, Fox notes—even pushing her beyond the neutrals she typically favors. “The palette is muted, but there’s a lot of color here: turmeric, caramel, sea blue, plus all the soft, worn shades of the antique rugs,” she points out. And certain spaces carry even richer hues, like the husband’s navy-walled office and an atmospheric downstairs lounge area in a moody oxblood red— immersive departures that nevertheless work within the home’s earth-toned color scheme.

Fox’s creation of spaces rife with character, as per the owners’ initial wish, didn’t stop at furnishings and color. A connoisseur of beautifully patinated surfaces, the designer added a brass surround to the living room fireplace—it will gracefully age along with the house—repeating the metal elsewhere in lighting and accessories for continuity. Plaster walls replaced wallpaper in the adjoining dining room, adding texture and dimension. The homeowners also felt strongly about bringing greenery inside, so Fox worked with garden designer Lindsey Graves of Inner Gardens to place plants in each area—see the leafy ficus anchoring a sunny corner of the living room and the baby Australian bottle tree on the entryway console, thriving under a skylight. Verdure tapestry pillows in the living room (a fabric echoed in a wall tapestry hung in the family room) visually link to the home’s verdant surroundings. “It’s important for me to create spaces that capture an earthy, grounded feel through colors, textures, woods and plants that connect back to nature, especially in a large city like Los Angeles,” says Fox. “Not every room has to be the same, either,” the designer continues, gesturing to the couple’s expansive upstairs bedroom suite. There, she created a quiet, sanctuary-like retreat that is deliberately spare. A study in restful tones of oatmeal and ivory, the suite includes a connected sitting room, where the wife often reads, that’s bedecked with a plush shearling rug and furnishings wearing nubby bouclé. The serene space completes a house that, now, boasts bespoke details galore, has a sense of history and fosters a deeper connection to its surroundings. In other words, it finally feels like a home.

W

orking in the music business, especially as a talent scout, is an out-of-the-house gig involving marathons of shows, travel and networking. So, when Wendy Goldstein, the chairwoman and chief creative officer of Republic Records— who oversees the careers of many well-known artists—retreats to her Beverly Hills residence, she wants her homecoming to feel like entering a sanctuary. And while “sanctuary” might conjure up images of clean, white, Zen-like spaces, this haven embraces a range of colors, strong patterns, antiques, art and vibes. “It’s like her: a bit rocker chic, with an Hermès bag,” quips designer Stephen Pappas.

Like the creation of any great album, getting there took effort and editing. Wendy, eager to avoid the dust and disruption of construction, asked Pappas—her friend of more than two decades and the designer of one of her previous homes—to work within the existing bones and layout of the 1961-built house, which had been renovated in 2017. When Pappas first glimpsed it, “It felt like an

airline terminal,” he recalls of the expanses of shiny white floor tile (which were retained) paired with primarily white walls (which were not). But the fact that it was such a blank slate ultimately appealed to them both. “Because everything is built on top of all that white porcelain tile, I knew it could hold a lot of color and still feel light,” remarks the homeowner. She leaned into surface treatments everywhere, shares Pappas, who delighted in his client’s collaborative spirit. “She’d say, ‘Why don’t we wallpaper this? Let’s go, let’s do more,’ ” he says, declaring, “Paint refreshes; wallpaper transforms. Wallcoverings became the heartbeat of this home.”

Pappas brought over a vintage brass Brutalist-style table lamp (one of several eventually worked into the decor). It sparked what he calls an unspoken agreement between himself and Wendy about the importance of layering in visual movement and warmth. Now, a variety of lamps, chandeliers, sconces and pendants replace what the designer jokes was originally “an unrestrained use of recesssed lighting.” Large rugs break up the uniform floors, and Pappas accented the great room with walnut slats. They line the back wall of the dining area, wrap a divider wall between the living and dining spaces, and even peek from below an outdoor serving counter. “The slatted walls provide an architectural grounding that really drives the home’s midcentury look,” the designer comments.

Pappas also played to the home’s midcentury origins by using iconic pieces like Eero Saarinen’s 1957 pedestal table in the dining room, the primary bedroom’s curved Lady armchairs—symbolic of 1950s Italian design—and a vintage boomerang-shaped desk in the office. A hexagon-patterned wallcovering in the entry off the garage also boldly references the era, as does the dining room’s Sputnik-ish chandelier. Other key furnishings nod to modern styles and the Bauhaus movement, like the classic cantilever dining chairs and the geometric living area lounge chairs, which feel at home within the dwelling’s clean-lined architecture. Outside, the sustainably focused landscaping, put in place by Sean McGowan of Modern Floristry, has what Pappas describes as “a sculptural, sun-drenched vibe” that amplifies the interior atmosphere. “Think Palm Springs chic with a midcentury backbone and a ’70s wink,” he says of the overall look.

Indeed, the fun factor of blending all these influences and design eras was drawing in elements from one of history’s most free-spirited times: the 1970s. Earthy, retro-y hues of mustard, brown, terra cotta and even bright orange are peppered throughout the house (with Pappas cherry-picking the better hues and aspects of the decade; this isn’t Austin Powers’ shagalicious pad). The media room is the space perhaps most indicative of the period’s flair, with its mauve suede walls, slouchy leather sofa and lacquered coffee table, all atop a rug of rainbow chevrons, a pattern emblematic of 1970s fashion. That’s where Wendy gravitates. “I’m a product of the ’70s, and there’s a grooviness here,” she muses. “All the colors pop. It’s a really happy house.” And that’s a compliment that can only be described as, well, music to a designer’s ears.

esigner Tanya Stone isn’t in the habit of steering her clients’ property purchases, but this home felt special— the perfect fit for a vibrant couple she’d come to know. Travel enthusiasts with a passion for preservationist architecture, they had worked with her previously, so she was aware they were hunting for a forever home: one with character, and nothing too shiny and modern. So, when she chanced upon an intriguing 1964-built Encino residence with an architectural aesthetic evoking a European countryside getaway, the designer determined that it was meant to be theirs.

Owners David and Sergio Alejandro didn’t need much convincing.

Recently married and hoping to start a family, they liked the home’s single-story layout set in a quiet but evolving San Fernando Valley neighborhood. “We love European culture, and this house had a kind of French-countryside-Italian-Mallorcan energy that spoke to us,” David recalls. “Our goal was that when people came here, they’d feel like they’d been transported to another country. And we knew that with a designer like Tanya on board, it could be really unique.

She thinks outside the box.”

Stone’s first order of business was a rethink of the kitchen. “The way I design is, I start by focusing on the area I believe is going to be most important to my clients and then piggyback off that,” she says. David and Sergio love to host: birthday parties and baby showers and holiday gatherings and game nights. Stone quickly realized that the existing kitchen, tiny and tucked into a tight wing, wouldn’t do—especially for Sergio, an accomplished baker and cook. (“Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” Stone quips.) She drew up plans for a more spacious, convivial kitchen in what had been the home’s library. General contractor Rouben Bashian made judicious use of existing plumbing that had serviced the room’s former wet bar. The relocation “required plenty of modifications—plumbing, electrical, framing,” he says, “but Tanya’s vision brought the bells and whistles of a full custom kitchen to life.” The new version now sits in the heart of the home, adjacent to the dining room and steps

“It’s a focal point, and it makes entertaining very easy,” David shares, “which makes us very happy.”

The original kitchen then transitioned into a “half-kitchen, half-bistro space,” as the homeowners put it, where the couple often enjoy breakfast. As a wink toward the idea of it also functioning as a sunny twist on a speakeasy, Stone outfitted its entryway with a scaled-up mirror, cleverly hinged on one side to swing open and reveal this “secret” space.

Structural changes beyond the kitchen were minimal—even a sauna added to the primary suite was neatly constructed in the footprint of a cedar-lined closet—which freed Stone to focus on color, texture and ambience. “The previous owner put so much thought into this home,” she observes, pointing out elements like the refinished custom cabinetry and herringbone hardwood flooring. “As you move through each space, my goal was to create a sense of elegance, warmth and vibrancy built upon the beauty that was already here. It just needed a little love.”

The furnishings’ curves and rounded corners set a relaxed, inviting scene—see the convex entry mirror, the soft-edged dining set topped by egg-shaped globes, and the swooping, scalloped living room sofa, all of which play off arched doorways and windows peppered throughout the house. The designer eschewed bright colors and bold patterns, turning instead to warm browns, blush tones and creamy hues for a majority of the rooms. “My clients aren’t wallpaper-on-the-ceiling types,” she notes. Paint, however, often does extend onto the ceilings, uniting trim, molding, paneling, medallions and more, an effect that’s sophisticated and soothing.

The calming colors result in an elevated restfulness that’s perhaps most evident in the owners’ bedroom, enveloped in a custom blend of cocoa. There, faced with a broad wall notch, Stone created an oversize headboard to fill its width, creating a moment of understated grandeur. “I wanted it to feel classic yet a bit regal,” she muses. A massive mirror and large patinated planter poised beside a tall arched window enhance the effect. The room caps off a house that’s become a transportive sanctuary infused with a quiet sense of drama—exactly as its owners intended.

t all began with the primary suite closet. Perhaps that’s an unusual first step for a gut renovation, but what homeowner Deborah Rosen had in mind as she was updating the Spanish-style La Jolla house she shares with her husband was major, notes designer Julie Smith. The resulting boutique-like retreat, which marries an existing closet and a former bedroom, “was the first thing we talked about, and became a jumping-off point,” recalls Smith. The home’s overall concept continues its luxurious, elegant, sensual vibe.

Fashion led Smith into interior design. She earned a degree in fashion design and business management, worked as a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue and even designed clothing for big-name brands.

Her experience in merchandising informs how she now approaches residential interiors. “I always think, how will this area flow, how will it be utilized? Because number one is functionality, then we make it sexy,” she explains. “Rooms can’t just be beautiful. They should be workhorses too.” With this in mind, Smith modified certain elements of a floor plan established by residential designer Claude-Anthony Marengo, including rejiggering the home’s entry to create a distinct hallway (“a pause point,” she says), carving out space for a larger stair to connect a second-level office, increasing the size of a laundry room and softening several of the home’s harder angles.

Embracing the dwelling’s curves, an essential part of its Spanishstyle architecture, was important to both Smith and Deborah even as the renovation aimed to modernize the 1990s-built residence.

The primary bedroom, for instance, features a curved window that “helps the space feel less like a box,” the designer observes. The idea of playing up the home’s swoops and adding even more rounded shapes in the form of arched doorways, windows and built-ins—all meticulously overseen by general contractor Josh Herbst—quickly turned into a theme.

Another theme centered on making the most of the location’s west-facing ocean views. “That’s what made my husband and I fall in love with this property,” recalls Deborah. “It sits at such a cool vantage point but is a five-minute walk to the beach.” Most rooms enjoy vistas, with furnishings oriented toward the horizon, but it’s the massive glass sliders in the vast great room—a clean-lined, contemporary space with no room for errors, notes Herbst—that frame the Pacific to perfection. The main living space, 45 feet long with 12-foot ceilings, is unmistakably grand, so Smith took care to mitigate its scale with comfortable furnishings and warm neutrals.

Creamy-white paint fills the walls, copper tile wallpaper accents an ivory bar, mixed wood tones add interest, and statement pieces like the dining area’s oversize chandelier balance the high ceilings. True to form, curves predominate the designer’s selections, from the bend of the sectional to the swoops of the swivel chairs, as well as the rounded edges of the bar and island countertops and the bespoke dining table. Small details, like the paneled refrigerator’s sculpture-like asymmetrical pulls, add to an aura of quiet luxury that permeates the room, which flows seamlessly out to a deck and an inviting infinity-edge pool cantilevered off the hillside.

While ocean, treetop and garden views provide much of the home’s color naturally, the interior palette contains a few surprises.

The owner wasn’t afraid of saturated hues, so Smith drenched the media lounge in a deep navy—an atmospheric departure within the residence that feels moody yet refined. Maroon swivel chairs in the great room and the bedroom’s chocolate-brown headboard strike similar notes. Limewash adds depth to the primary bedroom and bathroom walls, too, creating a cocoon-like warmth that doesn’t rely on bright pigment to feel impactful.

“Every detail feels like it’s been attended to,” concludes the owner, adding, “I’ve become nearly codependent on Julie at this point; I’m still asking her advice on little changes.” Which the designer is happy to provide. Like that initial closet, the best spaces evolve.

Share your process when taking on a new project. Design is a collaborative journey, so I start by listening to how my client lives, what inspires them and what they want their space to feel like.

Define success. To me, success is taking on a tough client or a challenging project, and then delivering in a way that leaves them not just happy but truly moved by the space we’ve created together.

SOMETIMES A CAREER PRESENTS ITSELF before one even

knows what to call it. For Lucinda Loya, Principal Designer at Lucinda Loya Interiors, the love of design began early. “I started at a very young age—rearranging furniture in my living room,” she recalls. That instinct sharpened into a refined talent and soon friends began seeking her advice and encouraging her to remake their spaces. Loya shares, “It was a natural progression for me, as I was always drawn to design, fashion and the originality of couture and intentional design.” She launched her firm nearly 30 years ago and now boasts an internationally recognized practice focused on residential and commercial projects. Loya adds, “Balancing interiors is important to me and I love blending the unexpected. Diversity defines our work, along with a strong set of design principles. We strive for bespoke results and no two projects are ever the same.”

Loya recently launched a collaboration with The Rug Company. She describes, “It is a textural rug design that works in both traditional and eclectic interiors and is available in a bold, high-contrast colorway as well as a softer, more subdued palette.” Loya adds, “I also hope to explore the world of boutique hotels, as many of our interiors evoke that feel. Equally important, I want to continue growing the philanthropic side of my work—supporting the arts and increasing access to education through design.”

“With high-end custom work, timing is always a challenge,” she explains. “On a major design in New York City, a vendor failed to deliver key furniture as promised. We called in a favor on a short deadline and saved the project. In the end, our strong team turned a setback into an opportunity. The experience was a great reminder that the wonderful partners and collaborators who consistently show up when needed are the ones that enable us to truly prioritize our clients.”

Tina Nicole, Chief Creative Officer for Nathan Anthony Furniture, is thrilled that her studio is a trusted resource for a growing list of interior designers. Locally, I am in the womenonly Accelerating Change driving club and on weekends I can often be found racing on long, empty stretches of Malibu Canyon. I’m also in a book club and now reading our group’s current selection: The View From Lake Como by Adriana Trigiani. Plus, I love to cook! This summer, in the Apulia region of Italy, I learned how to make orecchiette pasta and focaccia bread from a local chef. Who knows what my culinary future holds?”

“I really enjoy being active on social media,” Nicole shares. “It’s a source for design inspiration and feeds my insatiable wanderlust. It’s also a creative outlet where my team and I can play with new ways to conceive content and tell our brand story.”

Nicole’s love for speed and technology seems to say a lot about her personality. She notes, “I always raise the bar for myself through continuous learning and risk-taking. I enjoy exploring how tech can push creativity further— whether in the design ideation process or in aiding designers in visualizing and sharing upholstery designs. My team and I are diving into AI to help build responsive communications systems and I’m confident this trend will continue.”

ABOVE Architecture integrates with desert terrain, highlighting raw materials, abundant light and seamless connections between the indoors and out. TOP Set among desert boulders and cacti, an outdoor shower highlights the architecture’s integration with its natural desert context. CENTER A distinctive stone backsplash becomes the focal point of this kitchen, emphasizing organic texture with a refined, modern design.
