DONGHIA’S CRESCENT CHAIR AND OTTOMAN

With their latest collection, Icons II, Donghia taps its extraordinary archive once more to create updated iterations of founder Angelo Donghia’s original designs. The Crescent Chair and Ottoman, newly arrived in the company’s showrooms, is a celebration of his mastery of scale, tailoring, comfort and elegance. “The two-tier slipper chair became a staple in Angelo’s own decor as well as his clients’ homes,” explains Doug Garfinkle, who was named creative director shortly after the company

OPEN HOUSE

CABBONET LOS ANGELES

British design brand Cabbonet has recently opened at the Pacific Design Center. There, custom kitchens including signature pieces like the Apothecary Cabinet, which features crystal spice drawers crafted from a 1920s mold, or the Floating Island, which cleverly disguises plumbing with reflective finishes, can now be seen firsthand. The new space also highlights Cabbonet’s expansion into closets with innovative storage solutions, adjustable mirrors and folding or pivoting glass entry doors. Meticulously crafted in European workshops, the brand marries new technologies with traditional techniques. “Our aesthetic can best be described as modern eclectic with touches of nostalgia,” says Andrew Hays, who founded the company in 2019. “Our bespoke finishes celebrate tactility: doors and sliding panels made from woven metal that give a beautiful play on light, sculpted wood surfaces, bespoke hardware and elegant vitrines,” he says. Set within the PDC, in partnership with Steven Cooper of Cooper Pacific Kitchens—who leads the design team—Cabbonet’s Los Angeles showroom is a can’t-miss spot on the L.A. map of luxury design. cabbonet.com

was purchased by Kravet in 2020. (Donghia founded his company in 1968 and was renowned as much for his business acumen as for his interiors, which brought such clients as Halston and Ralph Lauren.) “Versatile and overstuffed, it came to embody and identify his style as luxurious, relaxed and distinctly American,” Garfinkle adds of the iconic design. This newly released model honors archival forms but has been updated for today. “The Crescent Chair embraces patterns and a playful spirit,” Garfinkle continues. “Its function and casual nature invite a relaxed, lounge-like atmosphere, yet the tailoring remains second to none. Modern and elegant, the Crescent Chair pays homage to the past while moving the vision forward.” kravet.com

PHILIPPA AGAHZADEH

Philippa Agahzadeh is the Newport Beachbased designer behind rug company Atelier Agahzadeh. Born into a family of Australian sheep farmers, Agahzadeh has an intrinsic love of wool, though she also gravitates toward Alpaca, silk, linen and cotton. “My work is influenced by the environment, by the beach, and there’s an authentic energy here,” she says. “Breathing clean ocean air is revitalizing, so when my brain needs a refresh, I head straight to Crystal Cove,” she shares, noting that it’s where she sometimes goes to sketch. The self-proclaimed “paper and pen nerd” (she collects vintage paper when traveling and has a fondness for Artline pens) eschews pencil and works solely with ink. “I throw myself into the moment— no mistakes, just feeling.” Her designs are finalized at the company’s Dallas studio, where she spends part of the year, then handmade in Nepal “by a wonderful team of weavers,” she adds. This year, the atelier (which is represented by Holland & Sherry at the PDC) will see new collections from Agahzadeh, as well as collaborations with designers including Joshua Rice. “We’re really diving into how people use rugs in their homes,” she says, “and exploring how we can make pieces that are super functional, as well as timelessly beautiful.” atelieragahzadeh.com

CAROLINE BLACKBURN

From her Sherman Oaks home, ceramicist Caroline Blackburn creates clay vessels often described as “perfectly imperfect.” Her pieces have, not surprisingly, caught the eye of interior designers like Kelly Wearstler, Disc Interiors and Brigette Romanek, the latter of whom chose Blackburn’s work for Gwyneth Paltrow’s Montecito home. “I’m an L.A. native, and the carefree nature here encourages me to always experiment,” she says. “This city’s design and architecture, and Japanese arts and culture play a role in who I am as an artist; they’re all part of my L.A. landscape.” By opening or closing the pieces in unexpected ways and attaching additional elements, Blackburn dismantles the familiar concept of a vessel and creates abstract forms. “I want to create vessels that challenge your notion of harmony, unity and stability,” says the artist, who is represented by Twentieth, though pieces can also be found at JF Chen. Her work will also be exhibited at Gallery Lulo in Healdsburg this April. “My work is imbalanced, fragmented, imperfect and bruised intentionally,” she adds. “I find beauty in those flaws.” carolineblackburnceramics.com

LAUNCH

Newport Beach-based interior designer Lindye Galloway has launched Le Maé by Lindye, a furniture collection that reflects her signature style: an easy but refined look that has won her projects across the country and a devoted Instagram following. “I drew inspiration from our high-end home projects—custom millwork details, premium fabrics, solid woods, our level of craftsmanship— and designed these furnishings to last for years,” says Galloway. The collection, which includes seating, a coffee table, case pieces, a bedroom suite, lighting and mirrors, exudes warmth and softness with a uniquely Southern California-meets-Mediterranean aesthetic. A natural material palette of white oak, walnut, brass and linen further enhances it. The arches of the Mallorca credenza pay homage to the architecture of Southern Europe; the Milos lounge chair is a contemporary play on a traditional shepherd’s crook armchair; and the leather and rope details of the Palermo counter stools bring an equestrian feel. So pleased is Galloway with the collection that the Porto bench, a curved white oak design with a cognac-hued velvet cushion, takes pride of place in her entryway.

“There’s no cutting corners with any these pieces,” she adds. “They’re designed to endure and become heirlooms.” lemae.com

TALKING SHOP

OLIVE ATELIERS

In 2021, Laura Sotelo and husbandand-wife Kendall and Ben Knox turned their passion for antiques into Olive Ateliers. Their “shop the drop” events won a cult-like following, and they quickly became one of Los Angeles’ most innovative retailers. Augmenting their DTLA shop, they’re now also online. Sotelo tells us more.

oliveateliers.com

What niche does the shop fill? In a city known for constant reinvention, and in a time where newness and

“dupes” are oversaturated, we offer a counterbalance by heroizing objects that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Olive Ateliers caters to those who are searching for objects that have a story to tell and resonate with history and craftsmanship.

How do you find the pieces? Our journey in sourcing items and connecting with artisans has led us to some of the most incredible places—Turkey, France, India, Indonesia, Morocco. Sharing their heritage with our community is the most important facet of what we do. We’re humbled to work alongside them and share their stories.

What’s to come? With our new e-commerce platform, we bring objects directly to your doorstep, and we’re excited to introduce upcoming “drops” and an expanded selection of one-off items, statement furniture and exclusive designs we’ve been crafting behind the scenes.

CALM & COLLECTED

FOR DESIGNER BETH WEBB, SERENITY IN THE BEDROOM—AND BEYOND—COMES DOWN TO CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF WHITE.

WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

Pale, nature-inspired tones converge in a luxurious bedroom in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Drapes of Rose Cumming fabric and an Eve and Staron rug wrap the space in softness.
The gracious four-poster bed is Holly Hunt.
photo:

Beloved for her neutral, tonal, collected interiors, Atlanta-based designer Beth Webb is a master craftswoman of peaceful environs, whether seaside, mountain top or in the heart of a city. And in no space is fostering a tranquil visual language more important than the bedroom—a cocooning place of retreat that’s squarely top of mind during this season of hibernation.

Webb’s distinct brand of quiet luxury is on proud display in her muchanticipated monograph, Embracing Beauty: Serene Spaces for Living (Rizzoli, February 2025), which promenades 14 magnificent homes from Florida to the Grand Tetons. Within its glossy pages, the designer subtly divulges the elements that, for her, compose a restful bedroom: soft palettes, gracious canopy beds trimmed with diaphanous drapery, richly textured

wall treatments, crisp Italian linens and a perch with patina to take in the views out the window.

Below, in an unpublished passage adapted exclusively for the pages of LUXE, the designer expounds on capturing the feeling of white (rather than the hue itself), and on the fundamentals that together make a home a sanctuary. Take a page from her design philosophy playbook in reimagining your own boudoir for a long winter’s nap.

The snowfall outside the window in Paris makes the city white in its body, white in its quiet. I wake early and sit in the lamplight, watching. This white. This quiet. How do we inhabit it? How do we maintain, in Stieglitz’s words, this “great white stillness?”

This is what I’m seeking: to enable us to live inside this sheltering. Sanctuary,

A creamy white bedroom in Atlanta synthesizes designer Beth Webb’s (portrait above) quiet yet layered approach. The Tara Shaw Maison bed sports a skirt of Loro Piana fabric and custom Julia B. Casa linens.

refuge—there are many names. “Embrace” speaks to this intimacy—to being sheltered and protected. When you are held by light, by space, by music, by a beloved, there can be a luminosity to embrace. There is an aura of refuge.

I studied fine art at university and, early in my career, visited the Florence Academy of Art, where they still taught in the tradition of 19th-century École des

Beaux-Arts academicians. They drew from life, down to the bones. They studied: line, material, proportion, placement, negative space, composition. My intention to this day is to apply that visual language of art to interiors. A room is an immersive composition. A key tool is light. In each of our projects, we start sculpting space with light. Our palette is quiet but always subtly tailored to the qualities of light in that landscape. East and west, mountain and coast, there is an intimacy of the interaction between light and color that we are very attentive to. At its best, it enables dissolution into quiet and contentment.

Within these serene interiors, detail enables discovery over time—all is not immediately revealed. When you study painting, you learn the value of negative space, of absence, of what is withheld. Like the work of the symbolist poets, it’s about allusion, not explication. “The ‘blanks’ indeed take on importance,” writes Mallarmé. It’s only upon closer

attention that one discovers the subtle shadings, the refinements, the textures. From the way the local light interacts with a palette—and how the subtlest difference in shade can transform the feeling of a space—to the touch of a textile so soft that it elicits an immediate sense of calm, a deeply attentive choreography of these elements enables the whole to be much more than the sum of its parts. It creates atmosphere. It creates sanctuary. And sanctuary is a form of embrace. When you imbue a home with warmth, welcome, charm and ease, it holds you in return—a room becomes a refuge, a house, a haven. As a designer, it is my life’s work to achieve this with each and every room. I want it to be well-designed, I want it to be beautiful but, more than anything, I want it to provide peace. bethwebb.com, rizzoliusa.com

Ethereal drapes on a canopy bed are a signature stroke of Webb’s, as seen in her forthcoming monograph (cover left). In this Brays Island, South Carolina, bedroom, panels of scrim linen from Ulster Linen offer a touch of rustic elegance.

Sweet Dreams

THE FOUNDER OF THE LUXURY BED COLLECTION SHARES TIPS FOR GETTING A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP.

Known as the Sleep Whisperer, Mary Pat Wallace understands just how important selecting the right mattress is when it comes to getting proper shut-eye. It’s the one item in your home that is used more than anything else and can have the biggest impact on wellbeing. Below, Wallace shares what to keep in mind when investing in a mattress. theluxurybedcollection.com

Materials Matter

It’s essential that the mattress companies I work with use natural materials. Spending eight hours a night with your face in something that’s full of harmful chemicals is not ideal. Both Hästens and Vispring are focused on using wood bases that aren’t treated with toxins along with flax, cotton, wool and steel springs. And what these materials do, depending on quantity and how they’re layered with the different spring designs, is deliver a completely elevated feel and sleeping experience.

Personalization Is Key

Different body densities require different mattress makeups. The brands at The Luxury Bed Collection offer split tensions, which can make all the difference when sleeping in the same bed with someone. For example, a smaller person needs less support and more pressure relief. I personally think that most people are sleeping on mattresses that are way too firm—go with what feels better to you!

Do Your Homework

I admit that I cringe when I hear about online purchases—you really should go in person to test a mattress. We have locations in Chicago, Dallas and Naples, Florida, and I urge people to come in, book some time, turn your cellphone off and get educated. Tell us how you’re sleeping, what your needs are, and let us help guide you through this process so you can find a mattress that, no joke, that will change your life and keep you healthy.

CARVING OUT SPACE TO BREATHE, A DALLAS INTERIOR DESIGN TEAM FORMS A ROOM LAYERED IN TEXTURE AND GEARED TOWARD HOLISTIC LIVING.

“This room was designed as a sanctuary for the homeowner,” says Cody Brown, co-owner of Bridges Brown Interiors. With partner Jeremy Bridges, he incorporates a lifestyle-oriented approach to the firm’s timeless and eclectic designs. To create a peaceful meditation room in an expansive Dallas home, Brown focused on all-natural materials that allude to the outdoors: A cork wallcovering pressed with specks of gold leaf creates a meditative backdrop; a set of hand-crocheted silk lights present a range of stony hues; and green acts as an accent throughout, as seen in a molded

Tactility also played a huge factor so that the client could sit as comfortably crosslegged atop the plush rug as on the linenupholstered chaise. “Every home should have a space like this,” Brown muses, “somewhere you can go and be quiet and align your mind and body so that you’re healthier.” bridgesbrowninteriors.com

BOYD LIGHTING

Shepherding Boyd

Lighting into the future is creative director Schuyler Sweet, a fourth-generation Boyd family member. The company was founded in San Francisco in 1921 and has more than a century of legacy under its belt, including creating the fixtures for the city’s famous Opera House in the ’30s. Since then, it has navigated changing design movements—Beaux Arts, Art Deco, midcentury modern—and countless innovations. That’s where Sweet comes in, with one eye on the past and one on the

future, with a goal to distill and finesse the Boyd DNA. “Every generation has their own philosophy,” he says. “My ethos is to bring Boyd back to its classic modern roots and add a levity to the brand.”

Boyd is now headquartered in Colorado, where everything is handmade to order. At the intersection of its aesthetic are materials like brass, bronze and copper— nonferrous, nonrusting materials that will stand the test of time—in silhouettes and shapes devoid of extraneous details. “Part of the challenge is making a really simple design,” says Sweet. “There’s elegance in simplicity.” The Ovalo pendant above embodies these principles: unadorned, hand-finished brass loops are suspended from the ceiling and illuminated by an LED light source. As for what’s to come this year, Schuyler hints at a move towards

femininity and softness, with glass having a noticeable presence. “Design is allowed to change with the times and reflect what is going on in the world—it’s a dialogue, a visual language.” boydlighting.com

Boyd Lighting’s elegant Ovalo pendant hangs dramatically over a staircase. Schuyler Sweet (below), the company’s creative director, who joined the company in 2011, oversees the brand’s identity from its Colorado headquarters.

Forging Ahead

HUBBARDTON FORGE

“When I first started at Hubbardton Forge 13 years ago, I didn’t have a job title,” says Andy Morter. “I was given a long leash to explore and tinker with materials and LEDs, which were changing the lighting landscape at the time.” Fast-forward to present day, and Morter, now design developer under the direction of VP of Design David Kitts, continues to experiment and take creative liberties, resulting in provocative creations like the Snaps collection, shown here and launching early this year.

The system’s leather straps, connecting LED modules that sit within alabaster discs, are fully customizable, giving interior designers the freedom to play with the configuration and positioning to create unique and bold installations. The fluid design is not necessarily inspired by a place or thing or era, but rather by the raw materials at hand. “It’s about the exploration of parts and pieces and bringing these materials and new technologies together,” says Morter.

The Vermont company’s goal is to build upon its storied foundation for everything created, from the newest leather Snaps collection to its iconic metal offerings. What began as a forgery 50 years ago has evolved into so much more, but staying ahead while remaining true to their roots is a formula they have mastered thus far. hubbardtonforge.com

Quality Control

RTO LIGHTING

“I’m definitely the orchestra leader in our opera of sorts,” Robert True Ogden says of RTO Lighting, the company he founded 20 years ago and which has since grown to some 60 people. Departments dedicated to woodworking, ceramics and metalworking are filled with talented makers working alongside employees in logistics and prototyping to create pieces that sing.

At the beginning of Ogden’s career, crafting lights was a creative side gig that didn’t have the limitations of his day job, but he soon realized pursuing it full-time was far more fulfilling. Today, RTO Lighting is a craft-first company whose products are all handmade in its Philadelphia workshop, something Ogden feels immensely proud of as he oversees the artisans who put together each item.

“My hope is that, in having outstanding quality, these designs will be collected and passed down through generations,” he says.

Most recently, Ogden has come together with designer and owner of Fair showroom Brad Ford to launch their first lighting collaboration, the Alina Collection, comprising table, floor and pendant lights with beautiful hair-on-hide shades. Ogden was inspired after reading an article about leather tanning and some of the toxicities caused by the process, instead wanting to embrace the natural product as is. The makers love how the product turned out—cowlicks and all—with the RTO Lighting founder noting, “There’s a simplicity to the designs that celebrates form, function and materiality”. rtolighting.com; fair-design.com

Sheer Genius

For nearly 70 years, Jack Lenor Larsen’s eponymous line of textiles has been a go-to source for organic-meets-contemporary fabrics, utilizing techniques both old and new to create one-of-a-kind designs. Of Larsen’s many offerings—decorative weaves, nubby wovens, velvets and wools— it’s the brand’s attention to the humble sheer and its duty to diffuse the light from

a sun-drenched window that designers have long admired. Take the Koto textured sheer (from their latest collection inspired by African crafts) hung here. The gauzy open weave texture is a blend of wool and linen with a hint of metallic yarn that subtly shimmers in the sunlight—a glimmering surprise even on winter’s longer and darker days, letting the outdoors in. cowtan.com

Standouts from Larsen’s newest collection include Koto, a dreamy sheer woven with metallic thread, and Kifi, a diamond-shaped jacquard weave.

DOUBT

All Natural

Ali Davin has spent decades in the industry developing her unique approach to luxurious, sustainable design, which in many cases begins with using environmentally safe, nontoxic materials alongside lots of natural light. See, for instance, the Healdsburg, California, dining area at left, which features reclaimed wooden beams, linen drapery and metal furniture as well as limestone ooring. Door ventilation on three sides of the room activates a lovely cross breeze, and the space was designed with sunrise and sunset positioning in mind to create energy efficiencies. Curious where to start when creating your own healthy space? Luxe Linens

Inspired by the pursuit of well-being, Italian bedding and bath linen company Frette has introduced its winter designs. An ode to wellness rituals, the collection invites you to relax at home and cozy up in extremely luxurious bedding, blankets and pillows. CEO Filippo Arnaboldi explains that this season is all about “transforming spaces into authentic sanctuaries of refinement,” and the new pieces, which emphasize natural materials like silk, cashmere and cotton, are indeed ideal for immersing yourself within your own bedroom oasis. Light The Way

Lutron’s smallest downlight to date, the new Ketra D2 comes in an array of minimal trims finely honed for a flush-to-the-ceiling aesthetic sought out by top designers. “The sleek, 2-inch aperture is a testament to modern design, allowing me to integrate lighting seamlessly into my interiors without overpowering them,” says Young Huh, founder of Young Huh Interior Design, who frequently uses Lutron pieces. The fixtures also leverage Ketra’s full-color, fourchannel optics to create the widest light spectrum available and adapt to various moments throughout the day. “Their discreet presence means I can focus on overall aesthetics, using light to showcase key features—like beautiful artwork or textured fabrics— without detracting from the design narrative,” Huh shares. lutron.com

Expert Opinion

When it comes to color and its effect on wellbeing, textile designer Lori Weitzner, a true expert on the subject, sums it up in two words: It’s personal. What feels calming or exhilarating to one individual might have the opposite eff ect for another. In her book Ode to Color , Weitzner has developed a test (which is also available online) that readers can take to learn which hues are best suited for them. The results are one of 10 unique “color worlds” composed of nuanced palettes for nuanced needs. Of the over 100,000 completed tests, the leading outcome is Fragrant Woods—the shades of an ancient forest like mossy greens and dark woods that, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, feel “grounding, rooting and nurturing,” explains Weitzner. Look out for these richer tones in the year ahead. loriweitzner.com

Open Vista

Marvin windows are rede ning the concept of a “room with a view.” In response to requests from architects, the company’s new, state-of-the art Modern Corner Window brings penthouse vibes and unobstructed views to any room of the house. As the name indicates, the window has two panes that meet at a right angle, seamlessly framing the exterior surroundings into a postcard-worthy panorama. The Corner Window maximizes two important elements: sight lines and natural light. It’s both an impactful design choice, creating a dramatic focal point, and a pragmatic solution for letting more light into a room. marvin.com

The leading results of Lori Weitzner’s color test are hues found in nature, like rich greens and warm woods. Clockwise from top right are new paint colors Paris Rain, Leather Saddle Brown, Rosepine, and Cinnamon Slate by Benjamin Moore.

SOFT GREENS ARE A VERSATILE ANCHOR FOR ANY ROOM— JUST ASK DESIGNER MICHELLE MORGAN HARRISON.

WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

“I’m known for creating ‘breathe out’ houses, and for me, greens are an amazingly calming tool,” says Connecticut-based designer Michelle Morgan Harrison. With this philosophy in mind, Morgan Harrison looked to floor coverings in gentle variations of the hue to anchor her clients’ Greenwich

residence. Take the dining room above, whose mélange is pulled together by a Moroccan rug with hints of sage peeking through creamy shag plumes. “Pairing a vibrant base with neutral shag is a great way to soften colors,” the designer says. The adjacent breakfast area’s sleek lines are

warmed by a dhurrie-style wool flatweave in a shade Morgan Harrison dubs deep celery. “Rugs are the key to any room and a great way to add understated color,” she notes. “Here, we pulled subtle shades from nature to create something layered, relaxing and fabulous.” morganharrisonhome.com

Monica Senn Interior Design

Tucked between the Pacific and the Santa Ynez Mountains, Santa Barbara is a unique—some say magical—locale of coastal vistas, mountainous expanses and world-class living. Enter, Monica Senn. Since relocating to the area a little over 20 years ago, the designer has made it her mission to create home spaces that suit the luxurious, yet relaxed lifestyle for which this beloved place is known. “I have always wanted to create something my clients could continue to love and appreciate for years to come, creating elegant and effortlessly livable designs that are warm, inviting and timeless while reflecting the homeowner’s personality,” Senn says. “My portfolio ranges from Montecito estates to downtown Santa Barbara condominiums.” She has also completed projects in Summerland, Maui, the Hamptons and beyond. But Santa Barbara holds a special place for Senn. “It is like no other place a true paradise.”

Place Of Influence

“Santa Barbara is more than just a location; it is a constant muse, a source of endless inspiration that shapes my work as an interior designer,” Senn shares. “The city’s rich cultural heritage, stunning natural environment and the warmth of its community all contribute to a design ethos that values beauty, harmony and authenticity. By listening deeply to my clients and drawing upon the vibrant spirit of Santa Barbara, I am privileged to create spaces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply personal and meaningful.”

IN SANTA BARBARA, THE PACE OF LIFE IS INFUSED WITH A SENSE OF LEISURE AND JOY. I AIM TO CREATE SPACES THAT EMBODY THIS.”

Personal Ethos

Asked to discuss her perspective on her work, Senn enthuses, “Design for me is a deeply personal and collaborative process. I believe that the most successful spaces are those that tell the stories of the people who live and love there. My approach is rooted in active listening and empathy. Each client brings their own vision, tastes and needs to the table, and it is my role to translate those into a coherent and beautiful reality.”

LIVING

KITCHEN + BATH

Design is in the details, as evidenced by a thoughtful Pacific Northwest abode that celebrates natural light and timeless materials.

In the Pacific Northwest, Lisa Staton designed a kitchen for clients who wanted to infuse classic style throughout their home. Custom cabinets are painted Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White. The Wood Stone pizza oven is surrounded by Mutual Materials brick tile, and Woodbridge Furniture counter stools pull up to the island.

Time Traveler

DESIGNER LISA STATON USES CLASSIC STYLE TO TURN BACK THE CLOCK IN A WASHINGTON KITCHEN, BATH AND LAUNDRY.

WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING

When remodeling this Washington home, designer Lisa Staton worked hard to ensure it didn’t read as “new,” channeling the old-world European charm her clients fell in love with during their travels. That aesthetic became the cornerstone for an update that created timeless rooms for work, play and relaxation. We asked Staton how she shaped some of the most significant spaces in the abode. lisastaton.com

How did you approach the kitchen? This part of the house is important because she is a cookbook author and wanted a beautiful place to work and photograph her culinary creations, and he enjoys roasting and brewing coffee. Residential designer Adair Orr of Armadillo Design Lab and I relocated the kitchen to the other side of the house to take advantage of the views. It is a workhorse room— cooking implements hang over the range within arm’s reach—but is also styled as an extension of the living spaces. Most of the appliances are hidden in the pantry, which keeps things airy and allows room to display items like serveware, plants and candlesticks. Perimeter cabinets are a soft white, the island is a natural wood tone, and both have traditional trim and marble counters.

Northwest Woodslayer fabricated the cabinets; the brass hardware and curved faucets are by Devol. A Thermador range is backed by custom vintage-looking tile the clients found in Portugal. Staton discovered the pair of antique pendants at Obsolete in Los Angeles.

Tell us about the coffee bar between the kitchen and dining room. My java-loving client wanted to make coffee while enjoying the sunshine in the kitchen, but we couldn’t find the right spot. Instead, we established a coffee bar in the passage between the two rooms and then surrounded it with interior windows that allow for plenty of light. The location is perfect for entertaining, as it permits him to easily serve guests a cup no matter where they are sitting. This dining room color is dreamy! We wanted it to be differentiated from the lighter colors in the kitchen. When you enter the dining room, there is this sense of reaching a retreat or destination as you are surrounded by inky color painted on paneled walls. How did you decide on the mix of pieces here? The clients owned this table but requested fully upholstered chairs to surround it, so we gave them comfortable seats covered in an old-school plaid textile. Scalloped bone-china shades on the pendants are new and add a fresh note. The wall sconces and the rug are vintage—older pieces add emotion to a room. Although we occasionally use online sources, I insist on visiting local and East Coast brick-and-mortar shops for antique and vintage pieces. It’s a practice that provides the kind of organic discovery an algorithm just can’t feed you.

Staton designed the coffee bar’s cabinetry (left), which is topped with Carrara marble and lit by glass Mullan light fixtures. In the dining room (below), cloaked in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, a Christie Rise & Fall pendant by Original BTC hangs above Jessica Charles chairs and a table the clients acquired from 1stdibs.

“I think it’s important that this utilitarian room be practical but also in keeping with the rest of the house.”
–LISA STATON

What was the goal with this laundry room? Since the owners will be in this room a lot, why not make it as enjoyable as it is functional? We kept the original cabinetry but painted it a soft blush color. Adding butcher-block countertops was key, because the material is durable and attractive. I think it’s important that this utilitarian room be practical but also in keeping with the rest of the house. You could say the same for the vintage-inspired laundry rack and step stool. All these elements help the very modern washer and dryer live comfortably in a more traditional environment. The deep-green wall tile reflects the gorgeous Pacific Northwest colors you see outside the window and gives the space a relaxing feeling.

Ar chitecture that makes your life better.

Floor-to-ceiling zellige tile from clé covers a wall in the primary bath, and an Artistic Tile marble tile graces the floor. Lit by Devol pendants, a Cheviot

What were the considerations for the primary bathroom? One of the notable features in this room is the killer view. In order to not block the scenery more than necessary, we installed sweet café curtains that provide privacy but allow a look at the water, trees and distant mountains. The homeowner loves a soak, so a stand-alone tub was a necessity, and a pair of marble shelves provides a space for toiletries and candles. Their brackets, like the tub ller and taps, are unlacquered brass that will patina over time. Is the oor brick? This room seemed to call for a unique oor, something with an aged appearance. Brick was brie y

considered, but we opted for a tumbled marble eld tile the client discovered. It has a rosy hue, and it was masonry-like without being porous. When laid in a herringbone pattern, it certainly resembles brick. Tell us about hanging multiple light xtures over the tub. I was looking for something a bit more unexpected than a chandelier above the tub. The clients couldn’t pick just a single style of these handmade xtures, so we opted to use one of each, hung in a row at staggered heights. It’s something like a deconstructed chandelier, and you can appreciate their shapes as they dangle in front of a wall of simple white-hued tile.

Answering the demand for self-care experiences at home, Kohler has introduced its first-ever ice bath. Designed in partnership with Dr. Jonathan Leary, founder and CEO of social wellness club Remedy Place, the tub boasts a thoughtful, ergonomic sitting experience and a sleek dark gray exterior. The bath can be used both indoors and out and comes with an integrated light to guide a bather’s breath work. kohler.com, remedyplace.com

INDUSTRY INSIDERS

MEET TODAY’S DESIGN INDUSTRY GREATS

Whether they are designing, constructing or outfitting a home or environment (or perhaps doing all three), it takes a creative vision and a passion for excellence to do it with style and skill. Within the pages of Industry Insiders, LUXE Interiors + Design celebrates those who dare to do just that with their own unique flair.

“IT’S INCREDIBLY FULFILLING TO BUILD LASTING RELATIONSHIPS WHILE CREATING SPACES THAT REFLECT MY CLIENTS’ LIVES AND DREAMS.”

Lisa Price Canale

Designing exceptional spaces that elevate people’s lives takes skill, talent and a collaborative spirit. Celebrated for world-class interior design, Lisa Price Canale and her award-winning team at Lisa Price Interiors bring their visionary expertise and client-centric approach to every project. “The majority of homes we design are in the stunning coastal communities of Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Santa Monica,” Price Canale says. “Known for their breathtaking views, luxurious lifestyles and strong sense of community, these high-end locations inspire me to design exhilarating spaces that cater to the modern family. Whether we’re creating beautiful, functional

interiors, crafting inviting outdoor areas or incorporating sustainable features, each project reflects how each client wishes to live.” When asked how she begins her process, Price Canale explains, “We start with the client sharing inspirational photos. This helps me understand their style so that I can source materials and create room boards of several design options that will suit their taste and budget.” The fact that Price Canale also has the ability to design for new-builds and home remodels sets her in a class apart. “Designing or reimagining a home involves a lot of details and decisions, so I make sure that the experience is as transparent and enjoyable as possible from concept to completion.”

ASK THE EXPERT

Describe your firm’s style.

I am best known for transitional designs that offer seamless indoor-outdoor living, and frequently use tone-on-tone color schemes with layers of texture, which help blend interior and exterior spaces into one cohesive environment. Knowing that many of my clients have small children, I also strive to create spaces that are as durable as they are beautiful, energizing and inviting.

What project would you love to take on?

My dream project would be one that allows me to travel to Europe to source materials and inspirations directly from the places I adore most. I envision exploring the stylish boutiques of Paris, the vibrant markets of Barcelona and the elegant galleries of Milan gathering unique textiles, artisanal pieces and exquisite antiques that add a touch of history, character and romance to modern homes.

Top Blending rustic charm with cutting-edge functionality, this modern Mediterranean kitchen boasts a beautiful birch cutting board counter, leathered Taj Mahal quartzite, a black granite farmhouse sink and industrial elements like steel windows and bronze-clad cabinets. Left With a glass enclosed wine room and welcoming bar, this intimate sitting area is the perfect place to gather and relax in front of the handsome bronze-clad fireplace. Right A true jewel box, this posh powder room showcases a marble sink that harmonizes with the Andalusian-style floor and mosaic tiles, while a beautifully crafted mirror from Mirror Home completes the chic design. Opposite A harmonious blend of elegance and comfort, this dining room features an open layout that extends to the courtyard beyond. Inspired by John Pomp’s captivating hand-blown sculpted glass chandelier, this space exudes a sculptural magnificence.

VIOLA GARDENS

“EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE THROUGH DESIGN. YOUR LIFE IS A GARDEN. YOU ARE A GARDEN.”

For many creative individuals, an appreciation for the natural world proves a core source of inspiration. In the realm of landscape architecture, this is especially prevalent. Enter, Jessica Viola. The Founder and Lead Designer/Contractor at her namesake firm Viola Gardens, she has long been driven by an awe for the natural landscape in California.

“From the majestic oaks and the diversity of plant and ecological life in the oak woodland habitat to the sage scrub of coastlines to the succulent air and fresh blossoms of the hillsides in spring, this place has endless beauty to discover,” she says. As such, it comes as little surprise to learn that her firm, which is known for its holistic approach to landscape architecture and design, characterizes its work in three primary styles: modern Mediterranean, midcentury modern and contemporary California native landscapes. “For me, the most important aspects of design lie in how the lines interact with movement throughout the space and architecture,”

Jessica Viola FOUNDER AND LEAD DESIGNER/ CONTRACTOR

Viola says. “Also, color is a key element. I treat each garden palette uniquely, carefully blending elements with plants to craft something vibrant and balanced. WWOO CONCRETE OUTDOOR KITCHEN

“WE DON’T JUST BUILD KITCHENS; WE CREATE SPACES FOR GATHERING, COOKING AND ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS TOGETHER.”

In California and other beautiful climates throughout the country and world, homeowners have been rediscovering a love of outdoor living. A modern habit of entertaining, gathering, working and relaxing at home has invited a renewed appreciation for the many ways one can experience their everyday environment. Enter, Gregg and Gina Hoffman. The two Californians have a particular passion for the art of outdoor living, and it drove them to found WWOO Concrete Outdoor Kitchen. “Our core product is customizable concrete kitchens that blend seamlessly into any environment— backyard, patio or larger alfresco areas,” Gregg shares. “Unlike traditionally bulky

kitchen units for the open air, WWOO offers sleek, functional designs with clean lines and open shelving.” Gina weighs in on the aesthetic, saying, “Picture for a moment the typical outdoor kitchen lots of stainless steel, heavy stonework and maybe some granite countertops. It’s often bulky and dominates the space. Now, look at our WWOO kitchens. They are simple, elegant and offer an airy feel.” With backgrounds in landscape design and real estate, respectively, Gregg and Gina have a unique perspective on the needs and wants of today’s homeowner. As Gina puts it, “In WWOO, we’ve found the perfect marriage of our passions and expertise.”

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

• What’s next for the company?

Gina: One of our key focuses is creating new products that meet the evolving needs of our clients. Gregg and the manufacturing team are currently experimenting with ways to make our components lighter without compromising their strength and integrity.

• Which faraway destination inspires you and your work?

Gregg: Italy! We love the way Italian design blends nature, architecture and outdoor living. From the timeless beauty of Tuscan villas to modern Italian minimalism, there is a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and surroundings.

• Share one thing your clients might not know about you. Gregg: We have five children and recently became first-time grandparents!

• List three design rules you work by and three of your design pet peeves. Gina: The first would be form follows function, minimalism meets warmth and respect for the surroundings. The second would be prefabricated outdoor kitchens (our passion is rooted in being the antithesis of this!), compromising on quality and overcrowding functional spaces with unnecessary features.

A new coastal Spanish-style home in Pacific Palisades elevates ocean-front living to extraordinary heights.

Atelier001 pendants from Garde oversee the entryway, where designer Adam Hunter placed a round Holly Hunt walnut table. The artwork is by Dan Shaw-Town. Ocean views and a glimpse of the pool are visible through Arcadia Custom doors. The vessels are Palacek.
Previous page: Landscape architect Will Bailey offset the lines of the front façade with olive trees that gracefully undulate toward the entry. Rustic Kansas Rubble limestone creates a textural old-world aesthetic set against the exterior’s white, smooth-finish stucco walls.

We had a special kind of freedom designing this home, because this was a moment of introducing a family to a new chapter in their life,” says Adam Hunter. “It became a rare opportunity to do what was really in my heart.” The deeply intuitive interior designer and former Broadway actor keenly understands transformation—and the power of a dramatic backdrop—but to Hunter, this was more than just putting together beautiful spaces. “It was about creating a feeling of being wrapped up in something, of being cocooned,” he muses.

The clifftop Palisades property overlooking the ocean above the Pacific Coast Highway is anchored with caissons, but Ignacio Rodriguez’s open plan is a celebration of light and air. “The homeowners wanted a Spanish-style home, but with warm, contemporary interior architecture, clean lines and pared-back details,” the architect explains. Though area design guidelines called for a more traditional Spanish exterior, Rodriguez gave the façade a modern expression by wrapping it in textured limestone and stucco, plus opting for pale oak eaves rather than the more typical dark wood overhangs. “All of the materials Ignacio chose—white oak, Douglas fir, limestone and steel—will weather well, which is an important consideration when you’re this close to the water,” comments general contractor Erik Jensen.

“So many beautiful moments here may seem simple, but we had to really peel back the architecture in order to focus on the views,” Rodriguez remarks. Working with his firm’s lead designer, Eileen Carter, and project manager Jorge Padilla, the architect crafted a series of “wow” moments that begin at the front door, where raised stone planters hold 100-year-old olive trees and an extended foyer reveals a Pacific panorama. The main rooms flow effortlessly into one another, but Rodriguez also gave them subtle definition by varying the ceiling treatments. And a wall of bifold glass doors neatly stack away, allowing all the main spaces to spill into the backyard when they’re open. “Ultimately, the design of this house was simply about getting out of the way of nature,” he says.

Similar to the traditional-meets-modern blend achieved by the façade, the interiors lean transitional, mixed with contemporary moments.

“My clients wanted a coastal vibe, but not obviously so, and rooms that felt soulful,” says Hunter. Key to his design was an embrace of the exterior’s natural materials, which drift inside, layered with eye-catching interior stonework like the kitchen’s expanse of fog-inspired quartzite. “It gives the open kitchen more gravitas, and also makes it feel like it’s floating,” he notes. Then, in the living room, a fireplace wall clad in a striking violet-and-white marble commands attention. “That slab is enormous in scale, a real Jack and the Beanstalk moment,” quips Hunter, pointing out a favorite detail: Art Deco-style “steps” that frame the mantel. But the designer also integrated softer forms within the spaces, realized through sculptural pieces like the foyer’s concave pendants—“They’re voluminous yet almost disappear,” he notes—and plush, curved furnishings upholstered with textural wools, mohairs, linens and leathers.

“This house is all about emotional integration,” the designer continues. “You can feel as one in this place—it’s a respite and a retreat.” The ethereal dining room is a case in point with its mesmeric hand-painted walls and ceiling. “The effect is somewhere between a Monet painting and a cloudy sky, and you feel completely transported,” describes Hunter. “It’s magical at night.” The home’s bedrooms are equally immersive, with the designer choosing “gentle colors”—soft whites and creams, peachy-pink sunset hues—a palette also highlighted in the wife’s rose-gold accented home office. And where views haven’t stolen the show, contemporary artworks chosen with Brian Ludlow of Creative Art Partners are carefully placed to continue the narrative of the home.

For the rear terrace that stretches out to a serene pool, the designer chose furnishings in keeping with the interior’s light tones and rounded forms, while landscape architect Will Bailey’s plant choices further temper the architecture’s harder lines. “We did lots of different textures and greens because Southern California gardens really need to perform all year,” explains Bailey. “It’s a loose, native coastal palette of grasses, edible natal plums and succulents, made statelier with olive trees and boxwood.” The aesthetic complements what Hunter calls the “restrained drama” of the home. “This house needed a certain balance, and I think we really got it,” he reflects. “The design is very energetic in ways; there’s a real vitality here, but it’s also meditative—and just happy.”

It’s possible that designer Georgia Tapert Howe manifested her role in reviving the 1918 Colonial Revival-style home her clients purchased. The stately house, holding court over a corner lot of Los Angeles’ Windsor Square neighborhood, first captured the attention of Howe, who lives close by, more than a decade ago. Clad with white wood siding, a pediment-topped entrance and a trio of dormer attic windows above a gracious, symmetrical front façade, “It doesn’t look like other houses in the neighborhood; it’s all wood, which feels so East Coast for L.A.,” remarks the designer. “I’ve always loved it.”

When the home she’d long admired hit the market, Howe nudged a family in the neighborhood to tour it. Already aware that the couple and their two young children were seeking a larger house in the same area, she advised them to jump on it, stat. Which they did. Then they hired her to helm the renovation of the 107-year-old dwelling, much to the designer’s delight. “It’s a historic house and the owners wanted to highlight that and authentically honor its traditional style, but still have it feel young and fresh,” Howe explains.

Previous homeowners had both preserved and updated the interiors and grounds in all the right ways, observes the designer (“which is so unexpected in a house this old,” she notes), providing her with a canvas already rich with original details and a framework that didn’t require an intervention. The plan, then, eschewed an extensive renovation in favor of cosmetic updates and furnishings that would juxtapose traditional and contemporary sensibilities.

This fine balance particularly plays out in the first floor’s main gathering spaces, composed of a spacious formal living room and an adjacent lounge area, the latter being an addition from 1939. To mitigate the size of the living room, Howe designated three distinct seating vignettes: a midcentury modern-inspired curvilinear sofa beckons from one corner, a gaming table rests in another and striking artwork helps define the main seating area, where a bespoke striped sofa and long coffee table anchor the space. Paneled walls, crown molding and a central fireplace make the room’s origins clear, while vintage chairs and stools upholstered in lively fabrics layer in an extra dose of personality.

Continuing from the living room and defined by interior glass-paneled doors, the adjacent lounge

features a fireplace, tongue-and-groove-paneled walls and a hidden bar. Howe resisted the urge to distinguish the socializing spot with a moody paint color. “These spaces all need to work together,” she observes of the tandem rooms, both of which feature warm white walls. “I gravitate toward earthy hues and I like color and pattern—but with restraint. The goal, really, is pretty rooms you want to spend time in.”

Much as the designer enjoyed scouring an array of Los Angeles antique shops, flea markets and websites like 1stdibs and Chairish for furnishings with her clients (the wife became an avid collaborator), Howe made an effort to bridge eras and styles for a more timeless look. The dining room, for instance, houses a Danish modern-inspired wood custom table surrounded by vintage wood-and-rattan chairs, backdropped by golden-hued draperies embellished with bold black embroidery. Not overly formal or stuffy, but not too casual either—and definitely not time capsule-y— the space exudes a relaxed, appealing elegance. The cheerful, detailed curtains became a jumpingoff point for the whole project, recalls the designer, noting that her suggestion of the unexpected combination of color and detail resulted in an enthusiastic yes from the homeowners early in the process. “We’re more on the classic side, but with a modern twist,” comments the wife.

Howe also made certain that the home’s traditional spaces would still work well for her clients’ contemporary lifestyle. A family room designated for kids’ homework and TV viewing near the kitchen keeps schoolwork and screens out of the main living spaces, for instance. And an enclosed porch space, accessed via the lounge and family room, functions “almost like an outdoor living room,” says the designer, adding, “A screened-in porch is so unusual in L.A., and I was as charmed by it as my clients were.”

Howe’s whimsical transformation of the attic, however, is the finishing touch. Reimagined as the ultimate kids’ escape, one wall is lined with built-in beds for sleepovers while a cluster of patterned slipper chairs below the vaulted ceiling provide ample seating for hangouts. There’s even a projector and pull-down screen for movie nights. “Initially, I couldn’t even imagine what this house could be,” the wife reflects. “Georgia captured everything we had hoped for. She turned it into a home we’re excited to come back to every day.”

DESERT DREAMCATCHER

A clear vision yields the contemporary Palm Springs masterpiece a couple had long imagined.

WRITTEN BY ABIGAIL STONE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LANCE GERBER

A hallway on the far side of the home is a gallery-like experience with Deep Reflection by Theophilus Tetteh (back wall), The Grassy Knoll by Rafael Lopez-Ramos (right wall) and 1960s works by Harry Mintz (left wall). The Paul Evans plinth is topped by a raw white marble sculpture.
Previous page: White stucco juxtaposed with hand-chinked white limestone, via Pacific Stone Supply, celebrates contrast on the exterior façade, where a custom white oak pivot door serves as a focal point. Landscape designer Al Sambila chose date palms, yucca, agave and desert spoon plants to reflect the Palm Springs environment.

From song lyrics to scientific breakthroughs, some of the best ideas start as scribbles on a cocktail napkin. It only follows that one couple’s own inspired concept, their striking South Palm Springs getaway, first took shape on a serviette. “They’d always talked about this forever home that they wanted to build in the desert,” remembers interior designer Mark Brunetz, who had worked with the married pair, Tom Davila and John Zaffarano, on their Los Angeles residence. But it wasn’t until they discovered an empty corner lot in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains that those fantasies began to riff on reality. One day, martinis in hand, the couple walked the property and started jotting down ideas—on their napkins, of course. The layout, how they wanted the house to feel, even what they wanted to see when they woke up in the morning all received deep consideration. “By the time we actually got started, they had about 80 percent of the architectural plan in mind,” recalls the designer.

The plan was largely driven by the site. Cradled by the mountains and with magnificent vistas, it has a slight elevation that offers extra privacy. There was also Palm Springs’ architectural legacy to consider. “We wanted a contemporary home that would celebrate the setting with elements of midcentury modern without being a caricature,” Tom shares, referencing the area’s plethora of midcentury modern homes. “No glossy white box; no pops of turquoise.”

During another martini-fueled meeting, residential designer Stephen Strugala refined an I-shaped floor plan anchored by a central great room. Private quarters are carefully balanced: The owners’ bedroom wing, a secondary bedroom, a larger guest suite referred to as the home’s casita (with its own kitchen and garage) and an office all converge, through halls adorned with art, into the great room—which is the home’s focal point and primary socializing area. Imagined as a space with the flexibility to host large gala events, it encourages indoor-outdoor living. Lengthy 30foot sliders on both sides pocket away completely, creating a breezy open space covered by a cantilevered roof that appears to levitate. “Having sliders that open on both sides of a house is more of a Los Angeles concept—you don’t see it as often

in the desert—and then having a ‘floating’ roof that can shade everyone even during the hot months became the grand gesture that drove this project,” Strugala explains. The design also embraces the western mountain view and connects the rear yard and pool with the house, he points out.

Strugala recommended general contractor Yann Debonne to execute the plans. “He told us, ‘I’m going to build this house as if I’m going to live there myself,’ ” shares John, “and we believed him.” Debonne’s words were quickly confirmed through the home’s meticulous custom details, like the hand-poured terrazzo floors with brass inlays, intricate terra-cotta fireplace tiling and a kitchen island that serves as a functional sculpture. “I look at building homes as if they’re large pieces of art,” the general contractor remarks. Fittingly, one of the homeowners’ ideas was that the walls should end in an inset niche (informally called a “museum reveal”) to give the impression that they’re floating. “It elevates the experience of the interior,” notes Brunetz.

The designer drew inspiration directly from the surroundings to create that experience— jump-starting his thought process by sitting in the empty lot with a fan deck of colors, observing how the sun and shadows played across the land. “Natural light plays such a pivotal role in this house, as the doors disappear into the walls,” muses Brunetz. “And texture is an important unifying element here; as the daylight changes, certain organic textures evolve too. The interiors become a living tableau of what’s happening outside.” Every surface and sight line was considered an opportunity too, the designer says. “I wanted each space not only to be defined, but to have gravitas and significance, to have its moment,” he reflects. The overarching warm palette is peppered with the couple’s wideranging art collection, which includes works from emerging artists around the world, as well as family heirlooms—the prominently placed dining table is a heritage piece John grew up with, for instance. “Bringing soul to a new home can be challenging, but I tapped into where the history actually is,” concludes Brunetz of the layered spaces. “John and Tom’s relationship, the things they’ve carried with them throughout their lives, their love of art, the desert, their family and friends—that emotional landscape is what gives this house a pulse.”

Clé tiles line the great room’s fireplace surround, where a Vladimir Kagan for Weiman sofa joins Milo Baughman swivel chairs.
