Every professional in the design field possesses a guiding philosophy or two. In the case of designer Marie Cloud and paint contractor John Parker, one such overarching ethos serves as bonding glue: client is king. “All of my homes are unique,” Marie shares. “I’ll never repeat myself, because each space is true to the homeowner’s heart, soul and personal story.” Likewise, John chimes in, “We are committed to transforming living environments to reflect the homeowner’s unique personality.” Paint, of course, is central to their methods in doing so. Marie enthuses on its role in design: “Paint is like language. It can transform interior and exterior environments, changing the overall ambience and mood. Lighter shades, such as beige and cream, create an airy, open feel, while darker shades, like navy blue or emerald green, lend a cozy and intimate atmosphere. It can also help to disguise imperfections and enhance architectural features, such as crown molding and baseboards. Paint is like magic.” Especially when it is applied with skill. As John puts it, “Top-notch workmanship ensures a beautiful result.”

Describe the impact paint has on your projects. Michele: Color is the cornerstone of all great design, whether we’re using it to bring the outdoors inside, to create a cozy man cave with dark and moody tones or to add a soft touch to a bedroom with a gentle palette. We love to play with unexpected color and finish choices as well. When we have clients who are open to it, we get experimental!

How did you come to work together? Michele: James and I were introduced by our mutual contractor. The painter I used for 20 years had retired, so I was looking for another talented painter. Mission accomplished!

What are some of your go-to paint products?

James: For walls, I would say the Aura Matte is above all other products I’ve used, and for trim, the Advance Satin product is definitely our favorite!

MATT DONAHOE + ERWIN HERCEG

For many trade partners, the working relationship begins with a personal passion project. This was the case for Matt Donahoe and Erwin Herceg. About 12 years ago, Matt and his husband hired Erwin to assist with a renovation in their own home. The scope was daunting, but Erwin’s work was masterfully executed. “We have collaborated together ever since,” Matt says. “When we show up on a jobsite together, the contractors sweat.” Why? Because the duo has a fervor for outstanding quality. The results usually feature Benjamin Moore product. “I like Scuff-X for high-traffic areas and Aura Bath & Spa when moisture is a factor,” Erwin shares.

Often, the reason two colleagues become long-term partners comes down to one simple factor: they just “get” each other. Take it from designer Kati Curtis, who has been working with painting contractor Jose Oceguera for years. “Jose has an intuitive understanding of my design preferences and requirements, which means I don’t need to provide excessive direction,” she says. Together, they thrive on great feats of design and execution, including one project where color changes were desired at the last minute. “Within a week, we transformed the home and the furnishings were protected throughout,” Jose shares. “We take pride in our work and strive for excellence, ensuring that everything is done right the first time.” As for the paint-related advice they share with homeowners, Kati points to the challenge of selection. “I strongly caution against relying on paint chips alone, because even larger squares can be misleading—the eye tends to perceive colors as darker against a white background. How did you come to work together? Jan: I saw the quality of craftsmanship Louis possessed and was so impressed. The work he did on our room at the first Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas was masterful, and we received more comments about it than anything else. We have been collaborating for the five years since!

Why is the connection between designer and painting contractor key to a project’s success? Louis: When these two parties communicate well and have a “feel” for each other’s skills and talents, the result will fit the homeowner’s desires, personality and character like a glove. Also, being able to troubleshoot through the confusion of any unexpected issue is something that is strengthened with years of experience working together.

Share a pro tip for choosing the right paint color. Jan: In rooms with low ceilings, I like to paint the ceilings, moldings and walls all the same color. It causes the room to look larger and taller.

Why is the connection between designer and painting contractor key to a project’s success? Stephanie: I think of the designer-painter relationship much like a musician and the conductor. Both are essential to a beautiful and cohesive sound—and space, in the context of design.

What are some of your go-to paint products?

Jessica: Benjamin Moore’s Scuff-X is the bee’s knees! The leveling capability of this product is superb. The satin finish is true satin and doesn’t lose sheen with spray application. Newer to my toolbox is Command. We refinish staircases often, and for stair treads, I stand by this product.

Which colors inspire you the most? Stephanie: Hands down, the most inspirational colors are deep, moody ones that evoke a feeling like a loving embrace or a nod to creativity: blacks, deep blues, purples, deep oranges and deep, golden yellows.

The order of the day may be paint, but Peti Lau and John Fasano first met due to the installation of wallpaper. After collaborating to install it for a Housing Works Design on a Dime charity event in 2016, the duo began a partnership that would culminate in countless perfected paint jobs. As Peti says, “It takes two to tango!” Asked to share their old-faithful approaches to the process, one talks color and the other formula. “I tend to go with saturated hues of blues, dark greens, teals and wine colors when I want drama,” Peti says. “When neutrals are the call, I like warm tones like taupes, greiges and sage colors.” John chimes in, “The specific features of Aura give the premium application we’re seeking, but my favorite combo is White Dove OC-17 in Advance Satin. When one holds to the “less is more” philosophy, there is a certain demand on the foundation of a space: there must be incomparable quality. As a designer known for her minimalist, Japanese and Nordic-inspired spaces, Jamie Deck would know. For her, the clean slate of simplicity begins with paint— and expert Ference Schold. “In this artistic collaboration, both the interior designer and the painting contractor play integral roles, each contributing their unique skills and expertise to the vision,” Jamie says. “Ference meticulously prepares surfaces, addressing imperfections.” Being that Jamie and her clients gravitate toward crisp, tranquil whites and creams, a smooth application is a necessity. The secret, Ference emphasizes, lies in formulation. “Paint products that offer ease of application without splattering or sagging are imperative to that flawless finish,” he says. “I prioritize those that have good viscosity control, reducing the likelihood of drips or visible brush and roller marks. ALL THINGS MODERN

In a world filled with digital noise, designer Amhad Freeman, of Amhad Freeman Interiors, creates serene sanctuaries of calm, clean-lined design that soothe and inspire the senses. Freeman’s compelling spaces elevate every design story with the use of natural materials, pared-back details and quiet color palettes. It’s no surprise that the award-winning designer was drawn to House of Rohl early on, taken with its level of craftsmanship and detail. Since then, its portfolio of brands has become a mainstay in the Black-led firm’s projects, bringing an elegant, stylistic

blend to every design. Dreamy minimalism defines Freeman’s approach, captured here in the modern version of his vision board. Looking to create an environment outfitted for urban living, Freeman went to work mixing materials and similar shapes throughout. “My goal was to find plumbing that was modern, simple and cohesive,” he says. Riobel’s Bistro Kitchen Faucet launched his scheme, which includes a painted Victoria + Albert tub in Signal Black Matte, ROHL’s Eclissi Faucet and Perrin & Rowe sinks for their craftsmanship.

KEEPING WITH TRADITION

Named one of the “Top 100 Interior Designers in the World” with 13 ASID Design Excellence Awards, interior and product designer Donna Mondi, of Donna Mondi Interior Design, has seen and done. Introduced to House of Rohl early on, Mondi was tasked with selecting plumbing for a custom home builder she worked with in an affluent Chicago suburb. “House of Rohl always had a great selection and beautiful finishes, and their faucets felt so good,” Mondi says. “I am big on how elements feel on a daily basis.” Here, Mondi took a traditional approach

to her whole-home concept, envisioning spaces with classical elements, but with a twist. Starting in the kitchen, she chose Perrin & Rowe’s Bridge Faucet and a chef’s sink with all the bells and whistles, then moved to the primary bathroom, where a Victoria + Albert Freestanding Bathtub in Signal Black Matte creates drama. “Powder rooms might be my favorite spaces to design, so I couldn’t pass that up, and a sexy bar lounge resonates with my firm’s provocative style,” she adds. “And I rounded it out with a chic and highly-functional laundry room.”

Interior, furniture and soon-to-be textile designer Joy Williams, of Joyful Designs Studio, is always intentional with her approach, seeking to enhance clients’ homes and lives with her stylish, textured and visuallyimpactful spaces. The design influencer and expert discovered House of Rohl at Chicago’s The Mart years back and, in her words, “completely fell in love with the beauty and craftsmanship of the brands under its house of design.” For her transitional take on this design, Williams brought to mind spaces she would design for her own family; how she would want

her kitchen and baths to function and look aesthetically. “I considered the type of craftsmanship that draws me in from materiality to finishes, she says. “The goal was to achieve a level of artful joy.” For the bathrooms, she pulled from Shaws, Victoria + Albert, Riobel and Perrin & Rowe, which provided a complementary mix, and for the kitchen, she went all in on ROHL. “I love the look of chrome and mixing metals,” she says. Williams continued the chrome theme in the bath, punctuating the look with a deep, soulful violet-purple, freestanding soaking tub.

What are the hallmarks of a Caren Rideau-designed kitchen? They’re simple and timeless, but I love incorporating unique cabinet details and custom hoods so that every kitchen feels special.

Share a few favorite resources for decorative elements. Household by Nickey Kehoe for unique table linens and kitchen accessories, Rolling Greens for succulents, and the zellige tile gallery at Waterworks—I’m fond of the textures and colorways of authentic tiles from Morocco.

What are your clients asking for now? We’re adding sculleries or back kitchens to a lot of designs, as well as steam ovens for a healthier way of cooking, and juice or wellness bars.

If you had to pick your one must-have kitchen item, it would be... As much as I enjoy cooking and using a lot of different kitchen tools, a wine bottle opener and my molcajete for making fresh salsas and guacamole are a must.

Italian finishings and fabrication firm Selezione Interiors has recently opened in West Hollywood. “As a businessman, I follow my instincts, and I sensed opportunity in Los Angeles,” says Paul Chavez, the company’s founder. Selezione is known for partnering with architects and designers to build out luxury interiors, from kitchens and bathrooms to closets, screening and paneled walls, as well as for crafting custom furnishings. Just south of Santa Monica Boulevard, the new showroom offers a materials library of some 3,000 samples (among them, woods, marbles, leathers and metals) making it one of the largest resources in the country. selezioneinteriors.com

MEET THE MAKER

JENNIFER MILLER OF MILLER HOUSE

Interior designer Jennifer Miller has been creating homes throughout Los Angeles (and beyond to Montecito and Sebastopol) since she opened her eponymous firm in 2010—but she has now decided to expand her talents across different media. Earlier in the year, she launched an ecofriendly wallpaper division, Miller House, which produces hand-painted, made-to-order designs inspired by her artwork. Painting is, for Miller, a longtime passion, and her debut collection, called California Garden, was inspired by watercolors made at her Silver Lake home. Comprised of five patterns (Succulents, Seaweed, Pittosporum, Olives and Vines), its colorways sport such evocative names as Sea, Salt and Sage. Now, those watercolors are making their own debut as Miller is releasing them as limited-edition prints via her website this fall. And rounding out her year of expansion is the inaugural textile line she is readying for launch in early 2024. “The new patterns and colorways are also based on my drawings and will coordinate with the existing wallpapers,” she shares, adding that they will be printed in the United States on 100% linen fabrics. “My designs are meant to bring the garden inside and act as living art, transforming spaces with a sense of serenity, warmth and soul connection.”

ON VIEW

Designed as an imagined 17th-century Dutch collector’s cabinet of curiosities, this exhibition presents more than 300 artworks and objets (including paintings, scientific instruments, porcelain and taxidermy) while reflecting on the economics and politics behind collecting. As Europeans explored the globe in past centuries, they amassed wide collections that functioned much like the encyclopedic museums of today—and in doing so established hierarchies of worth and value that often brought devastating results to both humans and the environment. On view from September 17 through March 3, the show looks at collecting through a critical lens, while also offering a one-ofa-kind experience replete with unique, surprising pieces. lacma.org

The former West Los Angeles site of the Martin Cadillac dealership and drive-in cinema is now a dynamic mixed-use complex with an office tower designed by Gensler, a residential tower by Togawa Smith Martin and landscape architecture by Rios. “West Edge’s design pays homage to the property’s history, including a terrace for outdoor movie screenings, Cadillac-inspired seating and color schemes, and artwork alluding to L.A.’s automotive history,” says Matthew Hines, the director of the property’s development firm, Hines. What prompted the Malibu location? It’s been a dream of ours to open in Southern California. When we stumbled upon a historic former hardware store on the Pacific Coast Highway, we took that as a sign to commit to the idea.

Describe the shop’s ethos. Our company was founded on wanderlust. Years ago, my uncle Lars went to India and eventually began importing handmade pieces from around the world. Trends would come and go, but we stayed the course, offering rare, vintage and reclaimed pieces. Our aesthetic is grounded in earth tones and our offerings are solid in feel, with an energy to them. Due to our unique pieces, the look of each shop can change weekto-week. We’re always evolving.

Have you seen Californians’ tastes shift in recent years? Yes. People are more intentional about what they buy. They want pieces that speak to them and are looking for companies with integrity and for products with interesting stories to tell.

Among the many niches within the wider world of design, rugs hold a place of prestige and even mystique. Often sourced from hard-to-access locations around the globe and imbued with a cultural heritage of craft and style, they bring a sense of storytelling but also luxury to any space. David Nourafshan sits at the heart of it all. He was one of the first people to bring Jute to the U.S., which culminated in hours-long trade show lines filled with designers desperate to get in on it. Impressive, but it’s hardly the only milestone he’s experienced. Considered a trendsetter in the trade, Nourafshan has traveled to India, Pakistan, Morocco, Turkey, Nepal and beyond.

“I also started a line of rugs made from tattered old jeans,” he shares. “They became fashionable in New York.” The latter is an understatement; Guess, Ralph Lauren, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Barneys all scooped the look up. After beginning his work with Lawrence of La Brea in 1998 in San Francisco, Nourafshan moved to Los Angeles. Over his 46 years in the business, he has become beloved throughout both markets and beyond. “We are best known for our antique and vintage rugs, which provide a sumptuous mood, character and visual desired in high-end interiors,” he shares. “At the same time, we have a selection of modern and reproduction pieces that is unparalleled in the industry.”

What type of project do you most often work in?

My training and background have helped me become more in tune with all types of settings, from modern to classical to industrial. I’ve worked with so many different designers and learned to adjust my perspective to source thoughtfully along the way.

How do you include the client in your creative process?

We get involved with the designer to establish the visual best suited to the homeowners’ desires, the architecture and the site. Our sales team meets with the design pros in our showroom or at their atelier, and then we get rolling from there. My entire sales staff has been with the firm for more than 24 years, so we work cohesively, providing a smooth pathway to the rug that meets every parameter of the client, from style and color to quality, texture and material.

MISE EN PLACE

Once Studio Heimat met the owners of this Palo Alto, California, Colonial, it was clear that the couple was ready to shake things up and have some fun with their renovation. “They weren’t looking for a big white kitchen,” explains the firm’s co-founder Alicia Cheung. “This is a young family that loves to travel, so we were inspired by European style and incorporated pieces that

feel more like furniture—including the two islands with open toe kicks.”

A new doorway and windows now physically, and visually, connects the kitchen to the adjacent sunroom while providing a natural dividing line between the prep areas for cooking and baking. In fact, one of Studio Heimat’s top priorities for this project was to accommodate the functional needs of the wife, a professional baker. “Everything has a place,” Cheung says. “A double cookie sheet fits perfectly in the refrigerator, and there’s a hidden pantry with a sink where messier baking items can be tucked away.”

As for the materials palette, the design firm and clients settled on a cool mix of white and dark-green metal perimeter cabinets, a natural oak bar area backed with an unexpected botanical wallpaper, dusty-green islands with brass inlay, and a herringbone mosaic backsplash that continues onto the wall between the kitchen and sunroom. Instead of sticking to just one hardware finish, they opted to use black metal and nickel on the perimeter and brass on th e islands and lighting overhead. The result, Cheung says, is “a mix of warm and cold accents that feels interesting.” studioheimat.com

The sunroom serves as a dining area with a banquette upholstered in a Missoni flame-stitch pattern. The adjacent kitchen boasts an oak bar area backed with Jimmy Cricket’s Jungle wallpaper; rolling ladders provide easy access to tall storage.

When repeat clients called upon Elizabeth Reynolds to help complete their newly built house in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina, the designer was presented with a unique challenge: The room adjacent to the main kitchen didn’t yet have a dedicated function, and the family of five needed some guidance on how best to use the space.

How does this room function? This area does everything from serving as a mudroom and laundry room to a working kitchen and bar area. The wife bakes and the husband cooks, so they each have their own zone with the necessary storage.

Tell us about the inspiration behind the color and pattern choices. The clients wanted to have fun with color and create a happy space. A palette inspired by the sky, dark-blue water, and crisp green grass felt so specific to this locale. We chose non-murky, clear hues and customized the floor tiles to match. t just three years old, I loved puzzles because I could always see the solutions,” Jenn Feldman recalls of her early knack for understanding spatial relationships. That nascent skill bode well for her eventual trajectory as an interior designer. And a recent project posed some of the most challenging, yet personally rewarding, puzzles she’s faced so far: the revamp of her family’s new home, a 1935 Colonial Revival-style house where her varied inspirations and passions could finally meet and mix with aplomb.

After years of searching, the four-bedroom property in West Los Angeles’ Cheviot Hills neighborhood promised plenty of potential. “We wanted a home that had charm and soul, and this was a unicorn,” Feldman explains. Here, the designer felt she could create the vibe she’d long desired: “a British town house on a street that feels like Ohio,” she describes in reference to her Midwestern roots and passion for English decor. Stints in New York and London during a previous career as a beauty and fashion industry publicist play into the abode’s rich narrative, too.

In advance of what became a year-long gut renovation (“my night job,” Feldman quips), she worked closely with architect Scott Alan Joyce on enhancing the floor plan to support the needs of her husband and teenage sons while still honoring the house’s historic features. “Instead of making the original moldings and millwork background elements or removing them completely, she amplified them with color and texture,” Joyce reflects about Feldman’s approach. “The rooms flow together nicely, but each one is extremely considered and has its own character.” Among the more notable changes, an enclosed entry vestibule with elegant checkered marble flooring was crafted from the former front porch, the height of multiple arched doorways was raised to better accommodate her growing 13- and 15-year-old sons, and upstairs closets and bedrooms were reconfigured so that each bedroom could contain an en suite bathroom. In the primary suite, Joyce added an office and closet space for Feldman (who calls it “the cloffice”) that now holds her grandmother’s writing desk. This new area also created space for a covered patio below it, which the designer refers to as “the most beautiful outdoor sitting room.” Meanwhile,

her husband, Todd, can retreat to his own off-thekitchen office to work or watch sports.

Throughout the process, general contractor Mike Khudir helped Feldman make her vision a reality. “I love working with her because she knows exactly what she wants and can give you the full details,” he shares. “You can almost see the result before you start.” Landscape architect Hadyn Lazarow of Garden by Design rounded out the team, installing olive trees in the front yard and a rose garden and box hedges in the backyard and pool area.

Inside, the designer’s well-honed skill of mixing contemporary and antique pieces is on full display. The goal was to create what she calls a “modern aged” aesthetic. “I wanted our interiors to feel like they had a kind of Midwestern charm mixed with California cool,” she explains. “With my firm, I follow the rules. For my own house, I tried to break them all.”

A penchant for moody, atmospheric greens, blues and blacks sets the tone. It’s an agenda most notably expressed via the living room walls and their extensive custom millwork, all coated in a smoky, British-inspired sage. “I love the feel you get from wrapping a darker hue around a room,” Feldman explains. “And green is my color.” Foliage-themed black-and-white wallpaper in the dining room strikes a playful, graphic note that freshens up the original moldings and wainscoting. And spaces such as the powder room offered more opportunities to go bold: There, the designer paired wallpaper in a daring, painterly scrawl with a matching fabric on sconce shades and window treatments for an immersive effect.

Feldman’s beloved art collections and prized antiques are also showcased throughout the abode. An inveterate antique hunter who loves a modern-meets-Old-World mix, she sources regularly from Round Top Antiques Fair, Portobello Market, Rose Bowl Flea Market and select dealers. Certain prized pieces were given the spotlight, like the living room’s gaming table and chair set—a family heirloom—or a Richard Serra print above the fireplace.

In the end, when she stepped back, all the pieces fit just so. “At this point in my career, I felt I had the sophistication, objectivity and patience to take on a project like this for my forever home,” Feldman says with satisfaction. “And this house was ready for me to do my thing too. I finally got to figure that out.”

ith just over two acres of generous panoramic views stretching up the Pacific coastline to the Santa Ynez Mountains, this Montecito estate was a gem—but the property’s existing 1970s-era abode needed an overhaul. With the intention of transforming it into a weekend retreat for their extended family, its new owners tapped architect Brad Clark and interior designer Mark J. Williams to create a guesthouse and tune up the older home. But as the project progressed and the list of requests grew, it became clear to both the architect and interior designer that the project needed to shift from renovation to construction. “There was so much remodeling needed, it was turning into a new house,” Clark recalls. Things came to a head when the owners proposed raising the ceiling height. “That’s when we convinced them they’d be better served starting from scratch,” Williams says.

The architect sketched out a fresh plan that, along with higher ceilings and plenty of natural light, included a U-shaped floor plan, creating a courtyard centered around a reflecting pool. “The original home offered a nice starting point, and we made an effort to respect many of its design elements,” he notes. He drew from a variety of architectural styles to create a residence that he refers to as “a warmer version of California modern, with clean lines softened by materials that feel natural and organic.”

To this effect, Clark specified steel-framed windows and doors, split-faced stone fireplaces and walls, cool limestone and oak floors as well as white plaster walls. And to amplify the dramatic view, he played off the idea of compression and expansion—an architectural methodology famously beloved by Frank Lloyd Wright—with smaller spaces that move into larger ones to generate a sense of tension followed by release. “There’s this initial feeling of compression combined with a ‘hide and reveal,’ ” Clark says, gesturing to the modest motor court and low-key entryway that lead to airier, open rooms inside. A similar theme repeats at the pathway into the guesthouse.

The residence’s meticulous construction emphasizes its connection to the exterior and pervasive sense of tranquility. Witness its flush transitions, like those that extend from interior ceiling to exterior roof or from plaster wall to oak baseboard. “The goal was to have everything be seamless,” general contractor Clint Unander comments. Clark concurs, adding, “It takes a lot of work to build a house that doesn’t get in the way of this site.” As the pieces came together, the team dubbed the result “California Zen.”

That impression is reinforced by a meditative exterior setting courtesy of landscape designer Nord Eriksson. Contemplative pathways meander across the property through Mediterranean gardens, olive and citrus trees and groves of Canary Island palms. There are spaces for lounging and dining, strolling or yoga sessions, bird-watching and sports, as well as a large front lawn that even served as the setting for the homeowners’ daughter’s wedding. Topping it all is the infinity pool that merges seamlessly with the ocean. “This is a garden that allows for massive views while also having moments of mystery and discovery,” Eriksson notes. Its beauty is underpinned by environmentally astute features, including lowwater plantings, rainwater capture and a solar farm that powers the property. Trees and shrubberies were placed to screen out any trace of neighboring homes. The effect is that of complete solitude.

Bridging the gap between the soothing architecture and idyllic landscape are the home’s peaceful interiors. Wooden ceilings covered in the same oak used for the floors and the kitchen’s cabinets foster a strong sense of intimacy that belies the home’s 11,000 square feet. Custom furniture in strong, simple shapes elevated by luxurious, inviting materials and paired with wellpatinated antiques keep the focus on the view. That objective is augmented by a spare but effective use of art, and a palette of sand, stone and brown with a silvery blue that conjures up the sparkle of sunlight glinting on the water. There’s also the judicious incorporation of lighting fixtures, which are carefully integrated to blend harmoniously with the architecture. At night, the house seems to glow with a peaceful ambiance. “We tried to create a serene residence that felt like an escape,” Williams says. “And I think we achieved that.”

Inspired by ancient civilizations, an L.A. artist explores the human longing for sanctuary.

Signs of a different way of living lurk among the ruins of Çatalhöyük, a proto-city in central Turkey that flourished around 7000 B.C.

Unlike other neolithic settlements, it features no grand shrine. Instead, this egalitarian society brought the sacred into the home, with holy clay figurines found alongside the pots and handwoven blankets of ordinary domesticity. These rites were intimate and personal—and are a profound touchstone and source of inspiration for Los Angelesbased artist Galia Linn.

For over 20 years, the sculptor and painter has excavated our primeval past to reclaim this same sense of innate sanctuary. From ceramic vessels and abstract guardian figures to rune-like paintings and sanctum installations, Linn looks at her work “as relics, objects of ritual,” she says. “I want to create places where you can feel safe to reflect.”

Linn traces her own artistic search for refuge to her childhood in Israel. A witness to both the Six-Day and Yom Kippur wars among other conflicts, she “never felt safe growing up,” the artist shares. “I’m building sanctuaries because I felt like I needed them myself.” But living among the region’s layers of civilizations also shaped her attraction to spaces and objects imbued with history and sacredness. “There are certain places you go in Israel where the stones vibrate because there’s so much energy from the people who lived there before,” she says.

Her pieces, in turn, often feel ancient. Cracks, rips and fissures ripple through her ceramics, metalworks, plastercoated paintings and textile installations, resembling “something dug up from an excavation, marked by the passage of time.” By embracing their brokenness and fragility, these objects come to embody endurance and healing. “Like humans, these scars are what make us unique,” Linn explains. “They tell the story of our journey.”

Though she uses multiple media, the artist’s forms feel most rooted in clay, her earliest discipline—as well as one of humanity’s oldest. This is especially true for her vessels and guardian figures, emblems she returns to again and again. In her studio (aptly housed in the sanctuary of an abandoned church in South Los Angeles), she coils or slab-builds each piece by hand, preferring to improvise in a tactile communion with the material. In her words: “There is no separation between the clay and my body.”

Linn’s guardians will stand watch over her first survey show, which is taking place this coming January at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History, with a parallel exhibition at Track 16 Gallery in L.A. Assembling decades of work together in one place is “an interesting, out-of-body experience,” she confesses. It is, after all, a culmination of her own history: a creative life spent building havens for all who come.

Wine country aesthetics inform the look and feel of a new ocean-facing, ranch-style home in Corona del Mar.

he lure of California wine country is as much about the lifestyle as it is about the virtues of a plummy Pinot noir. From alfresco meals with the freshest farmer’s market ingredients to the rustic, relaxed aesthetic of its famously inviting homes, the region has much to savor. It was precisely the draw of la vida vintner—and its architecture—that infused homeowners Glenn and Lauri Welling’s vision for their ground-up new build in Corona del Mar. “The laid-back lifestyle of Napa was a big inspiration for the overall design and mood of the house,” Glenn confirms. But in this area of Southern California, there’s a key difference: “Instead of looking out onto vineyards, here we have the ocean.”

With the Pacific as the main attraction, architect Christopher Brandon and general contractor Andrew Patterson devised a contemporary ranch that wraps around an open courtyard facing the waterfront. Because the neighborhood is terraced into a hillside, a height restriction mandates no new construction can block the views of the houses above. Working with that condition, they built down instead of up, creating a walk-out basement level that nearly doubles the home’s square footage. And, thanks to an abundance of wall-to-wall steel-framed glass doors, the resulting two floors of indoor-outdoor living offer seaside scenery and crisp ocean breezes from most vantage points.

For the home’s exterior palette, the design team ran with the Wellings’ wish of bringing a Northern California feel to their Newport Beach neighborhood. Take the wood framing, an architectural element for which Patterson incorporated exposed beams of Western red cedar that will acquire a patina over time, giving it a subtle modern farmhouse feel. “As far as the materials go, we wanted the house to feel a bit earthier, with stained wood, stucco and painted brick,” Brandon says. “The idea was to bring in more of that wine country vernacular.”

Designer Rachel Morrison worked closely with the couple on the development of an interior material palette that echoed these exterior selections. “Overall, our aim was for high contrast,

lots of texture, interesting lighting moments and touches of industrial-leaning elements,” comments Rachel, who helmed the project under firm principal Denise Morrison.

Indeed, a decidedly moodier vibe prevails, upending the usual fundamentals that have come to be associated with coastal interiors. “There’s often this built-in expectation of bright whites, blues, grays and cool tones,” says Rachel, noting that it was clear from the get-go that the Wellings didn’t want to go in that direction—which made the project more exciting. “Their desire for something different sang to our souls.”

That “something different” includes unexpected artisanal details, such as leather strapping on certain lighting fixtures, vertical ribbing on the millwork and a statement coffee table that takes its amoeba-like form from cobbled-together slices of ebonized wood. Those features complement the largely neutral palette, which ranges from soft ivories to bold blacks, and favors texture over pattern and comfort over formality. “It’s all meant to create a warm, welcoming environment,” says Rachel. “They didn’t want a house that had a ‘don’t touch anything’ vibe.”

Because the Wellings are both frequent hosts and the parents of three sons, two of whom live at home, the creative brief prioritized spaces for gatherings, both large and small. Those areas, most notably a full bar and game room in the basement, can pivot from holding a casual Friday night teen hangout to a more formal fête with high-top tables and a band. As those spots open onto the courtyard, patio and pool deck, landscape architect Travis Gramberg of Koheid Design worked with the homeowners to ensure sight lines would be directed to rewarding focal points. “We made it a goal to have the eye fall onto something magical, whether it’s the ocean, a fire feature or a piece of art,” he says.

Which nicely highlights one of the perks of having a residence with coastal views: Studies have shown that simply gazing upon the water can have a calming effect—a fact not lost on the family. “Obviously with three boys we have busy lives,” Lauri says. “It was important that our home be a special place for us to decompress.” Presumably, with a glass of wine in hand.
