What Sustains Us

For this issue on The Power of Architecture, I’ve been reflecting on its purpose and meaning. Aside from shelter, security and function, architecture serves as a spatial arrangement that forges communities and speaks to the culture of a place. At best, the spaces that surround us enrich the quality of interactions we have within them. It’s the reason we feel peaceful while sitting by a poolside loggia or happiness when ascending a stairwell with a view of nature. Our homes, and the buildings we encounter in our daily lives, also reveal much about how we see ourselves. The potency of architecture lies in its ability to innovate through materiality and design, to push us to think differently about our environment, and, most importantly, to lift the human spirit.

The most innovative dishwasher ever. From the world’s premier sustainable appliance brand.

With CornerIntense®, the industry’s first rectangular-motion spray arm, Beko’s 36, 38 and 39 model dishwashers clean dishes like never before. But they also use half the water and two-thirds the energy. It’s the most significant breakthrough in dishwasher technology in nearly 100 years. Along with this revolutionary approach, Beko’s new line includes custom panel options with fully flush installation and industry-standard dimensions. It also boasts a suite of impressive features. beko.com/us-en bekoappliancesusa beko_usa bekoappliancesusa

• The EverClean™ filter automatically rinses with pressurized water to remove food residue and debris, keeping it cleaner up to four times longer.

• DeepWash™ technology uses three water-adjustable jets to make sure tall bottles or jars with narrow openings get the extra powerful clean they need, too. • Next up, SelfDry™ unseals and opens the door on its own, letting air in to dry dishes naturally without the use of additional energy. Oh, and did we mention? These dishwashers are so quiet (the 39 model’s operating sound level is 39dBa), you’ll need the red light that shines on the floor to know they’re running. They’re the planet’s new best friend—and yours too. Bring your Beko home, starting in late May 2022.

Cleaner dishes. Cleaner planet. Cleaner conscience. Beko’s mission is simple, yet impressive. It aims to redefine what is possible in terms of performance, reduce the use of natural resources and price within the reach of everyone who wants to lead a healthy and eco-friendly life. It seems a tall order, but Beko has done it time and again, and its latest endeavor champions the trio of intentions.

Rising to the challenge of the dirtiest dishes, glassware, pots and pans, Beko dishwashers conquer it all for more peace of mind.

SCENE WRITTEN BY LAURA HINE

ONE TO WATCH RENÉ ROMERO SCHULER

Where do you find your inspiration? I look to other women who have shown strength, power and resilience. They’re not amazing despite suffering adversity; they’re inspirational because they’ve had ugly and hurtful things happen, but instead of being ashamed and embarrassed, they wear it as a badge of honor. Does that reflect your own background? I had a tough life growing up and suffered through some extraordinary things. It took a lot of soul searching and work to look back on it and say that I’m a force to be reckoned with. I’m proud to be here and to be here because of my past. What’s your artistic process? I tap into my energetic space, which comes to me in a color that will typically be the background for the piece on which I’m working. Then I latch onto a memory and try to hold myself in that time and space. As the figure starts to emerge, there’s a counter dialogue and the figure evolves. By the time it’s done, a whole new story has come out.

“NICK CAVE: FOROTHERMORE” On May 14, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago launches a career-spanning retrospective of renowned artist Nick Cave. “I’m thrilled to be sharing my career’s work in my chosen hometown. I don’t take the gravity of this moment for granted,” Cave says. “It’s the realization of a dream that could only happen in Chicago—with this brilliant team and throughout this great city.” That team includes curator Naomi Beckwith, who worked with Cave to assemble an immersive journey that includes three decades of the artist’s creations, from carved and cast sculptures to his “Soundsuit” series to a roomsized video installation. The exhibit also includes never-before-seen pieces and new works, including a site-specific installation, Spinner Forest, that will hang in the museum’s two-story atrium. The many events planned around the exhibit kick off with the ArtEdge gala on May 21 and will include happenings across the city. mcachicago.org

With works hanging in museums, a robust base of private collectors and invitations to art shows around the globe, René Romero Schuler’s art clearly speaks to viewers. She started her career working with designers to create artwork for hospitality spaces, but she found her stride when she began to paint women in abstract representations that show strength and vulnerability. This spring, the artist is busy launching a new line of home accessories including pillows, wallpaper and textiles; introducing her latest book, Ladies; and opening a solo show on May 20 at Chicago’s Zolla/ Lieberman Gallery. reneschuler.com

The chic retailer has enjoyed a strong following for its women’s fashion, fine jewelry and beauty offerings, as well as The Lunchroom—an always-bustling breakfast and lunch spot. “We saw a need in the market once Elements and Barney’s Chelsea Passage closed,” co-owner Lance Lawson says. “Suddenly collections with a huge fan base like L’Objet and Ginori 1735 just weren’t available.” Lawson and his partner, Jim Wetzel, picked up these beloved lines as well as others, like Tom Dixon, that they knew would appeal to their stylish clientele. “We have so many interior designers who are retail and The Lunchroom clients,” Lawson notes. “They’re not going to special order a couch from us, but Maison is the icing on the cake—you’ll always find interesting things to put on a bookshelf, beautiful coffee table books or a fabulous throw for the sofa.” space519.com

POST MASTER WHO: Ellie Nottoli, founder of Ellie Styled, a Lake Forest-based event planning business. She focuses not on huge corporate affairs or large weddings, but on smaller, more intimate parties that still deserve a curated, one-of-a-kind look. WHAT: Her feed showcases soirees of all types, from backyard dinner parties to girlfriend gatherings to grown-up birthday celebrations. Recently, a hostess asked Nottoli to design four dinner parties, four nights in a row, each with a unique aesthetic. “We started with a base of florals and created a different look every evening,” she says. “It was exciting for her to watch the evolution and see us create a new story each night.” WHY: One of Nottoli’s strengths is her deep list of vendors—florists, caterers, rental companies. In some cases, Nottoli handles everything from booking the bartender to supplying all the tablescapes, while in others the hosts are more hands-on. Either way, she enjoys the intense collaboration it takes to create the perfect party. IN HER WORDS: “We’re seeing a lot more in-home entertaining. People want to invest in creating a beautiful scene around their dinner table for friends and family.”

MEET THE MAKER JESSICA DENNIS BUSH

SCENE

DESIGN

Artist Jessica Dennis Bush works in oil, wax and collage to create works of encaustic painting that explore ideas of memory and place. The full-time artist, who lives in Wheaton with her husband and four children, has a thriving practice of pieces commissioned by clients and interior designers as well as her own explorations. jessicadennisbush.com How do you work on a commissioned piece? I connect to my past through collage materials, which is a powerful way to tell a story, even if the viewer doesn’t know the story. For a client, I incorporate memorabilia or history through paper and weave those pieces into a painting using wax. It’s the idea of a window into the past as you look through the wax to see the collage elements. What’s next? I’m experimenting with textiles and surface patterns by taking snippets of my work and repeating them in different ways to create these vibrant and unique patterns. I’m also looking at textiles as a direction to explore.

COLLABORATION The sconce collaboration between Chicago- and L.A.-based interior design firm Studio Gild and ceramicist Caroline Blackburn got its start on Instagram. Blackburn DM’d Melissa Benham, one of three principals at Studio Gild, and asked her to look at her work. Benham did, loved what she saw and the two connected in real life. “Caroline’s work stood out to us as being very different; there’s a painterly quality to it,” Benham says. Studio Gild began offering Blackburn’s pieces through its online store and placing them in clients’ homes, and soon the idea of a collaboration surfaced. “We asked, ‘You make shallow bowls, could they be sconces?’ ” Benham relays. “Next thing we knew, Caroline had turned around five prototypes.” Those prototypes became the initial offering, with plans for other produced and custom lights. “We don’t want to repeat anything, but we can show a customer an idea and personalize it,” Benham says. “I’d love to use two not-quite-identical sconces on either side of a mirror or cluster a few to combine art and light.” studiogild.com

THE LASALLE CHICAGO The top five floors of the 1914 Daniel Burnham-designed designated landmark building in the financial district—originally known as the Continental and Commercial National Bank—are becoming The LaSalle Chicago, Autograph Collection. DiLeonardo International and Chipman Design Architecture collaborated on this new luxury hotel, which is scheduled to open this spring at 208 S. LaSalle Street. The design honors both the original La Salle Hotel as well as the building’s Art Deco style. “There are subtle Art Deco influences infused through materials, artwork, furniture and accessories,” says Giana DiLeonardo, partner at DiLeonardo International. “The aesthetic is really a nod to old Chicago’s movers and shakers and the environments that evolved around them.” thelasallechicago.com

HOMEOWNERS WHO PRIORITIZE HOLISTIC HEALTH IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS ARE LOOKING TO THE SOUTH—WHERE WELLNESS COMMUNITIES AND AGRIHOODS ARE RISING FAST. W R I T T E N B Y K AT H R Y N O ’ S H E A- E VA N S

It’s not often that a kid’s birthday party will change your life. But for Monica Olsen, who hosted her son’s fourth fête at Serenbe, a wellness community 32 miles from her then-home in Atlanta, it was a transformative experience. “We had a pony party at the gorgeous stables which were designed by architect Peter Block and it was this magical day,” she recalls. “We thought, ‘Maybe we should just stop at the real estate office while we’re here…’ They pointed out a house, we bought it and basically never left!”

LUXESOURCE.COM

Founded in 2005, Serenbe is tailormade to help residents live their best lives. It’s outfitted with a new 3,000-squarefoot spa, yoga studio, swim club, artist in residence program, lush hiking trails and many more wellness-geared elements that make it idyllic to say the least. And, it’s gaining traction: The community had around 100 residents when Olsen purchased her home in 2009, and boasts 1,000 today. All properties there—including townhouses, cottages and estates, most of which look more like

they’re in Scandinavia than Georgia— are EarthCraft certified. (Translation: they’re energy and water efficient, saving 30 percent of the energy costs of a typical home.) And Serenbe is not the only Southern community that epitomizes the notion that health is wealth. “Agrihood”—planned developments that mingle sustainablybuilt real estate and farm-to-your-owntable amenities—is booming. Community & Farm sits perched along the French Broad River and features a four-acre organic farm. Every home here is required to use a geothermal heating and cooling system, which comes with a hidden perk in the sweltering Southern summers: no HVAC noise buzzing. Broker and owner Allison Smith notes, “Pandemic migration has taken property sales through the roof as major lifestyle changes allow people to now work from anywhere.” Meanwhile, at Tennessee’s 5,200-acre hotel and residence Blackberry Mountain, sister property to the iconic Blackberry Farm, the lucky few private homeowners

on premises have access to wellness offerings that range from sound bathing to an aerial yoga platform. And yes—the untrammeled wilderness is a huge part of the allure too. Only 20 miles from Charleston is the new Kiawah River, where half of the 2,000-acre waterfront community will remain entirely wild and untouched. Protecting the natural world here is vitally important to this agrihood, which includes The Goatery—a farm dedicated

to artisanal goat milk products—beehives and pasture-raised cattle as well as myriad farms for produce. Residents can also enjoy maritime forest trails where everything from bald eagle pairings to migrating monarch butterflies are frequently spotted. “We love the community and people,” Kiawah River homeowner Megan Hendricks says. “But most of all, we love the wildlife we get to see every day while walking on the paths by the river.”

ARCHITECT THOMAS KLIGERMAN REFLECTS ON THE ENDURING APPEAL OF AN INNATELY AMERICAN VERNACULAR. A S T O L D T O G R AC E B E U L E Y H U N T

When I close my eyes and imagine a house, I picture the sounds it makes: footsteps on the staircase, slamming screen doors, faint voices from downstairs while falling asleep. If someone asked me where I’d choose to live out my days, I’d say a Shingle style home because they reverberate like a drum. My connection to buildings has always been visceral. By the time I left for college, I had lived in 10 houses— saltboxes up and down Connecticut; apartments in New York, London and Paris; an adobe in New Mexico. My father’s work moved us often, but summers were always for sailing in Rhode Island, which is where my love for shingled homes cemented. Shingle style architecture emerged in Newport in 1876, combining the simple forms of early Colonial buildings with the quirks of Victorian Stick style. The 1880s were fascinating years—everything was brave and new. During this time, rooms grew from small, symmetrical boxes into episodic progressions with

abstract shapes and enormous doors that opened onto terraces. These homes weren’t trying to be Italianate villas or French chateaus. Here was an American style. I’m grouped with classical architects, but I’m a closet modernist who is always pushing to see how modern traditional homes can become—yet I never want to lose sight of what people love about them. Shingles are a medium that encourages daring design because they’re so lightweight. You can have soaring cantilevers and chimneys that look like great blades dropped from the heavens. With shingles, you can make a home look like the sail of a boat filled with air. Have you ever sat on the porch of a shingled house in the rain? There’s this wonderful, cozy scent from the cedar that brings comfort like a favorite sweater. That’s the thing; no matter who you are, whether you live in Santa Fe or Seal Harbor, the draw of home is strong for Americans. And Shingle style buildings don’t look like houses, they look—and feel—like homes.

Touch of Whimsy

Parisian designer Vincent Darré’s fantastical collection with OKA includes the Spiral Lamp & Shade, XIV Mirror, Gemini Vase and Lyric Console Table.

LUXESOURCE.COM

As British retailer OKA expands its horizons stateside—it arrived in Dallas last November and will open in Westport, Connecticut, in September—a new collection with French designer Vincent Darré is next on the agenda. Darré, a former fashion heavyweight, captured the imagination of Sue Jones, Co-Founder and Creative Director of OKA, with his Cocteau-esque interiors. “Seeing Vincent’s work in the flesh excited me about the prospect of a collaboration,” recalls Jones after an early visit to Darré’s Paris atelier. “Everything he touches has a sense of drama to it.” For the duo’s tightly edited four-piece collection, Darré channeled OKA’s aristocratic-meets-bohemian style—a look that reminds him of photographer Cecil Beaton’s work—while also referencing the Neoclassical era and romantic 18th-century gardens. The result? Furnishings that work just as well in a group as they do individually. Included are a marble-topped console supported by ancient ruin-inspired legs, a column-like floor lamp (its spiral shade reminds Jones of a Philip Treacy hat), a black-and-white Grecian face vase and a mirror embellished with musical instruments and starfish. The playful collaboration allowed Jones and Darré to have a little fun while still championing true craftsmanship and creative ingenuity. oka.com

Lasting Lineage Sara Hayat Design

Design is in Sara Hayat’s DNA. Since the 1870s, her family’s company M. Hayat & Bros. has produced luxury furnishings for everyone from royal households to prominent clients, including John F. Kennedy and his famous White House rocker. So, it comes as no surprise that the need to be creative eventually struck. Setting aside a career in finance, Colorado-based Hayat set her sights on made-to-order furniture with a debut collection comprising coffee, writing and dining tables, chairs and sofas, and inventive modular seating. Each of the designer’s pieces, which have their genesis in detailed drawings, are handbuilt by her family’s longstanding artisans in Peshawar, Pakistan. While her materials lean traditional (mahogany, marble, cane, brass inlay, leather and velvet), her forms (geometric, floral, stacked and beveled) are anything but ordinary. Hayat studied joinery and detailing techniques by researching her

family’s archival catalogues in addition to referencing some of the world’s greats— Oscar Niemeyer and Pierre Paulin for further inspiration. She also became fascinated with contemporary automobile and fashion styles, making note of what she loved and which aesthetics she responded to emotionally. “Intentional design has the ability to uplift, and I want my furniture to do just that.” And her Tetris-inspired modular sofa provides a plum example. “People should be creative in how they use it,” Hayat explains, noting that the piece can morph from a sleek living room sofa into a fantastical object for play when deconstructed. “These pieces should dazzle, anchor us in the moment and remind us of what we can be.” As the newly minted furniture designer begins using her own pieces at home, she can’t help but reflect on what her parents instilled in her growing up. “My mother always believed that you should surround yourself with items that make you happy.” A legacy Hayat will surely continue to uphold. sara-hayat.com

Feeling Blue

Delft by Plain English is a five-piece tile collection featuring designs inspired by antique tiles that decorate the founder’s own home. Children Playing I (background) and Sea Creatures (inset).

LUXESOURCE.COM

Sometimes inspiration is right under one’s nose. Or in the case of Tony Niblock, co-founder of kitchen manufacturer Plain English, it was right over his Aga range, where an assortment of antique Delft tiles is proudly displayed. Niblock first started collecting the blueand-white squares after spotting them at a historic house in Yoxford, England, in the 1990s. Now, that passion has grown beyond adorning his own home and evolved into the company’s latest offering, Delft by Plain English—a collection of handmade, hand-painted tiles inspired by his findings. “There’s a freshness about the color combination, isn’t there?” posits co-founder Katie Fontana. “And it’s so wonderful that there’s been a renewed interest and understanding around Delft tiles.” The tin-glazed earthenware tiles have been synonymous with the Netherlands since the 17th century when, impervious to heat or water, they became a functional— and charming—wall decoration for homes, public buildings and palaces across Europe. Plain English’s interpretation features figurative depictions of daily life, like children skipping, as well as fantastical scenes including a mermaid admiring her reflection—all in keeping with eclectic British style that is now back in vogue. “There is a naivete about them that people find appealing,” remarks Niblock. plainenglishdesign.co.uk

When 210 Design House opened the doors of its groundbreaking space in the River North Design District three years ago, it brought both fresh perspectives and the seasoned know-how of a staff that boasts more than 25 years of experience in world-class kitchen design and premium cabinetry. “Since opening in early 2019, we have expanded our knowledge base and our collection of offerings well beyond kitchens,” says senior designer, Brandy Czach. “Although kitchens and cabinetry remain our mainstay, we have product offerings in furnishings, closets, wardrobes, glass doors and partitions, and so much more. At 210 Design House, we always have room for growth, exploration and diversification when it comes to unique, curated offerings that enhance our clients’ homes and lifestyles.”

Why should someone work with 210 Design House? We have a wide, yet specialized range of high-end product offerings and our collective team knowledge spans decades of expertise and personal connections. We also bring a personal touch to every interaction, making us a small business with a large design impact. Share some of the ways 210 Design House engages visitors? When guests walk into our ‘house’ we encourage them to immerse themselves in our four state-of-the-art showroom floors, where they will experience active kitchen displays, relax on fine furniture, open drawers and closets, and on and on … We’ve also collaborated with a number of local chefs and restaurants, inviting them to engage in our space in varying ways, such as cooking for charity events, hosting personal meetings or holding larger media initiatives. We want 210 Design House to be a welcoming haven where people are inspired and feel at ease. What are the most important things to consider in the design of a great kitchen and/or a great home? Functionality based on how the client lives and works in their space is always top of mind. Where does the space sit in the home? How will the client enter the space? How many people will be using the space at once? These are just a few of the important questions to ask before the aesthetics or the ‘pretty stuff,’ as I like to call it, can begin.

The highly anticipated Schiaparelli show took place at Paris’ Petit Palais art museum, where the garments, like this treasure-like shift laden with fillagree including gems and pearls, rivaled the glamorous interiors. Under the direction of Texas-born Daniel Roseberry (the first American to helm a French couture house), the predominately black-and-white collection—complete with Schiaparelli’s signature gold adornments—was inspired by a mythical high priestess “at once goddess and alien, who might walk among us,” explains Roseberry. schiaparelli.com.

Synonymous with all things high-fashion, Valentino’s Anatomy of Couture show beautifully challenged the industry’s status quo. Under Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vision, diverse and dramatic silhouettes graced models of all sizes, ages and backgrounds. One particularly au courant look: a head-to-toe periwinkle ensemble that straddles the line between minimalism and maximalism, while remaining “soft and welcoming in the democratic spirit,” notes Piccioli. valentino.com.

WHEN BOUTIQUE IS BEST At Gemma Parker Design, a boutique team of passionate pros has been working together for many years (some more than a decade)—and the fruits of their collaboration are evident. Though the firm is considered boutique because of its principal Gemma Parker-McKeon’s hands-on approach, its streamlined processes and detailed but efficient methods have garnered GPD a reputation for successfully delivering massive projects. Along the way, two sources prove key influences. “Whenever we are designing, we are looking at spaces holistically, from the exterior landscaping to the natural light to the architecture,” Parker-McKeon says. “Each of those components strongly influences our work, as well as our clients’ inspiring personalities— they are always my muse.”

PARKER-MCKEON SHARES … + Inspirations:

Travel (when and wherever I can get it!), my family, fashion, art and the sheer importance of home all drive me in design.

+ Thoughts on trends:

I never focus on trends. I wouldn’t

want a client to look back and be able to date their interiors. I just don’t think that is good design. Regardless of the style, we focus on timeless interiors that will stand the test of time.

+ Perspective on design:

Design is an art, and I view my

role as the curator, creating spaces that are reflective of our clientele. If I achieve that goal, then that is good design.

STAYING POWER

After 16 years, designer Dana Wolter knew it was time to upgrade her Birmingham, Alabama, kitchen. She soon whipped up a pretty, elegant and detail-filled scheme, but above all else, the space needed to stand the test of time. “I like to think of this room as timeless—a kitchen that will age well and get better the more you use it,” Wolter explains. To bring her well-aging vision to life, she opted for eternally exquisite materials like

LUXESOURCE.COM

Calacatta gold marble countertops and unlacquered brass fittings, all of which patina with use and become more beautiful. Wolter also gave careful consideration to several special details, including delicate fluted cabinetry, a hidden marble spice rack above the range and a functional trough sink carved directly into the island. As Wolter learned first-hand, renovating your own space certainly comes with its perks. The designer tweaked and customized every element to align with how she wanted the space to function. One especially lovely area came about from moving walls around: A graceful display niche that houses silver and crystal tableware frequently used for meals.

Here, delicate curved stone motifs on the shelves echo detailing on the center island to tie the areas together. In contrast to the light, airy kitchen, Wolter had a bit more fun in the pantry, where a moody palette and graphic marble slab surfaces add a touch of drama. “My intention with the pantry was to repeat some of the finishes and treatments in the kitchen, and to make the rooms flow,” the designer explains. “But at the same time, I wanted the pantry to be a little bolder.” Ample storage, refrigerator drawers, and a second dishwasher allow the space to function as a workhorse and keep messes out of sight. A successful passion project, indeed! danawolterinteriors.com

TROPICAL SWING

Interior designer Margaret Kaywell’s client sought an office space of a different color. Namely, one that would inspire future ventures, and host friends and associates for work and play alike. He found his answer in a run-down bungalow in West Palm Beach, which Kaywell—in collaboration with MP Design & Architecture and Tim Givens Building & Remodeling—imagined as a sumptuous private clubhouse. Reworking the layout from the studs, Kaywell conceived a gracious foyer with velvet banquettes flanked by a conference-meets-dining room on one side, and a billiards room on the other. The floor plan also includes a private office, powder

FULL HOUSE

Designer Nina Magon faced a unique brief when it came to the media room of a young Houston-based family. “The husband is a serious cards player and wanted a designated place to call his poker room. His wife said, ‘Okay fine, but you need to share it with me and your child!’” So spurred plans for a space that bridges the divide between moody man cave, elegant lounge and kid-friendly play space. “It’s a universally fun room; it works for everything,” notes Magon, pointing to the custom six seat table (the exact headcount for poker night) and adjacent TV area with its wipeable ottoman that rolls away to accommodate a playmat. But the real hero of the space is the custom cabinetry, painted Sherwin-Williams’ Seaworthy, which chicly stashes vestiges of life with a toddler, or a gamesman, as the case may be. ninamagon.com

LAST HURRAH

A family’s early 1800s farmhouse in Litchfield, Connecticut, was a ground-up project—of sorts. Over the course of six years, and led by designer Susan Bednar Long, renovations were tackled phase-by-phase. By the time they set their sights on the unfinished attic, both designer and client had developed a keen sense of what was still missing—a workhorse. On the wish list: A well-appointed office, a gentleman’s lounge for cigar smoking and game nights, a sleep loft for family visits and a bevy of storage. While embracing the original beams and warm wood floors, Long set about modernizing the space with a cozy, masculine mood. Notably, in building out the crooked chimney, she created a stylish built-in

bar-meets-shelving unit wrapped in metallic Hermès wallpaper, which ingeniously serves as a partition between the lounge and office areas. Utilizing every solitary inch (while preserving an airy feel thanks to precisely scaled furnishings), the designer squeezed in a comfy window banquette, an 11-foot-long desk, a flatscreen TV and a sectional. Storage space abounds as well, including the antique home’s original, rehabilitated cubbies that now enclose back-of-house office supplies, camping gear and seasonal storage. “Only the pretty stuff is on view,” notes Long, adding, in the ultimate stamp of approval, “This was never an essential space, but it has become just that.” sblonginteriors.com

When home design is at its best, it cultivates spaces where people feel fully themselves in their most genuine expression. Alice Benjamin, the talent behind Alice Benjamin Interiors, sees herself as a mediator who helps people tell their stories through authentic design. “We personalize spaces so that they reflect the backgrounds and lifestyles of our clients while contributing timeless sophistication,” Benjamin says. “Our work honors the individuals who live in the spaces we create.” Rather than defining her design sense by a particular style, Benjamin prides herself on a unique sense of balance and scale, and the ability to mix patterns and layer materials with elegance and comfort. “We are known for being honest with our clients, respecting budgets and working with the industry’s best craftspeople to execute a vision,” she adds. Benjamin’s greatest satisfaction? “Seeing my clients happy.”

•W hen did you first know you loved design? As a child, I wanted to design homes, but didn’t know it could be a career. So, I studied business and worked in the financial industry, marketing and launching investment products. Then I took a leap of faith and pursued my dream of designing interiors. • Share a favorite project. For one very special client, I created a unique living space that captured Peranakan culture using intricate textile designs. This concept was inspired by her most prized possessions: a dress, a shoe and a handkerchief from Singapore. • Describe a typical workday. My workdays are quite varied, which keeps me engaged and never bored. I start my morning with The Wall Street Journal news brief and then I might see clients, collaborate with my team, work on sourcing in showrooms at the Merchandise Mart or visit sites and coordinate with contractors.

Schloemer is humbled to be a part of the design community and to work with the giants of the trade. “To think we have the luxury to work with them on their unbelievable projects throughout the country has been—to say the least—the most unreal feeling.”

After working in the stone industry for more than 15 years, Kristin C. Schloemer is uniquely aware of the exciting direction in which it’s heading. A fresh approach to material selection is truly changing things in the world of natural stone. As the owner of Calia, she sees her role as ensuring her growing team has all the tools they need. And as for the company, expansion is top of mind. “Currently the goal for Calia is to grow our collection of unique rare materials, as well as to make the natural stone selection process more seamless and to serve as a go-to knowledge resource,” she says. Schloemer would like to broaden the firm’s reach with additional locations to better service designers. As for the future of design? She notes, “This industry is evolving every day, and if I was to narrow it down to my specific industry, we are on fast-forward.”

When Amy Erb created Divvy House, she didn’t just want to help clients through the design process. She wanted to create a holistic experience with an integrated team of architects, designers, stylists, stagers and organizers. “The end goal was to bring together a team with diverse skill sets to meet all life cycle needs of a homeowner,” she says. As the principal designer, Erb offers her signature style that includes an affinity for antiques— something she attributes to growing up in England. Recently, she worked with a client who wanted to attain a streamlined aesthetic while also incorporating 45 years worth of personal belongings. “I started living in the space mentally and after we moved her in and staged it, it was somewhat hard to leave it,” she says. It’s through this level of care and appreciation for the past that Erb guides her clients from conception to completion.

It’s never too late for improvement, for inclusion, for recognition of a deficiency within the design community. There are not enough Black designers— and the noteworthy designers of color are not as well-known as they should be. Mattresses usually end up in one place—landfills. But, The Luxury Bed Collection prides itself on only carrying products that are natural and fully recyclable, which means clients not only experience a sound slumber but they also feel like they have made a positive environmental impact with their purchase.

Mary Pat Wallace’s No. 1 concern is making sure her clients get a good night’s sleep. About 15 years ago, when the founder of The Luxury Bed Collection began balancing motherhood with entrepreneurship—and sleep became more scarce—she learned that mattress selection is everything. “Your mattress is your most important piece of furniture in your home,” she says. Wallace decided to open a showroom in Chicago, which now touts luxury brands like Hästens, Vispring, Naturepedic and Sferra. With outposts in Dallas and Naples as well, The Luxury Bed Collection promotes physical and mental health by helping clients select a sleeping foundation with personalized support and pressure relief. Wallace says that while mattresses are an investment, “My grandfather always said to spend money on two things: your shoes and your mattress, because you are in your shoes all day and your bed all night.”

Celeste Robbins has seen firsthand the achievements that can be born outside a traditional workplace schedule and setting. A few of the women in her office have made adjustments to fit their family needs. “The work they have done is phenomenal, and I would not be where I am without them,” Robbins says. “The flexibility to manage a family and career is even greater with work-from-home (WFH) setups,” she adds. Embracing flexibility and diversity has enabled Robbins and her team to produce design work at an elevated level. “Richness, warmth and authenticity in design comes from a place of openness,” she says. “As the world grows to understand how the spaces we occupy have an effect on our health and happiness, so will the understanding that we need a tapestry of voices in design.”

robbinsarchitecture

Celeste Robbins’ entry into the world of architecture was informed by years of passion and study. After training at Cornell University and completing a fellowship in Europe, Robbins eventually returned to her Midwestern roots. Looking to marry her new role as a mother with her love for architecture, she formed her firm in 1995. Soon, she was commissioned to design a 10,000-square-foot project in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “With the stunning backdrop of the Grand Tetons, the site inspired what would become my signature,” Robbins says. After the project was recognized by a major publication, Robbins became known for weaving the beauty of the outdoors naturally into the home. “Each home is sculpted with a modern hand and a soft edge between inside and outside. Nature doesn’t get it wrong. Whether via a wall of glass or a framed view at the end of a hall, I rely on its timeless elegance to become the art of the home.”

Some of the most influential figures in the world of design are those who find the balance between timelessness and timeliness. Enter, Julie Hacker.

“More and more women are entering the field of architecture,” Hacker shares. “I currently mentor many young female architects and hope the industry allows them time to raise families and not stop practicing. With this new world of remote working, women will have more flexible hours which may allow them to parent and work around their schedule.”

Principal of her namesake firm, alongside her husband, Stuart Cohen, Hacker has spent the better part of three decades proving her finesse for context, composition and the smallest of details. She has also become known as an architect with a knack for collaboration. Not only does she work closely with her husband on a daily basis, but contractors, owners and consultants laud her ability to “make sense of the issues at hand,” a talent she credits her first degree in clinical psychology with inspiring. Hacker is also an AIA Fellow. At the heart of all she does is an intention to resist trends and create places that suit circumstance. “I want the environments we make to last and to touch the people for whom we’ve made them.”

om and Cindy Shelby had no intention of leaving their Chicago pied-à-terre at the Ritz-Carlton Residences. Just a few years before, architect and designer Joan Craig had carved out their ideal urbane abode, swathed in dark floral fabrics and Art Decoinspired accents. It was perfect. Then an entire floor a few stories above became available. Boasting 360-degree views of both Lake Michigan and Chicago’s iconic skyline, the unit’s opportunity to experience the city so cinematically felt irresistible. And because it was unfinished, “we had carte blanche to do whatever we wanted,” Cindy says. “Our hearts were beating pretty quickly,” laughs Craig about that exciting first tour with her design team, which was co-led by architect Dave Pickert and designer Christina Stillwaugh and rounded out with architects Tracie Cote and Nicole Zielinski. “We could program different elements according to the light, the views and the orientation,” says Craig, who worked with builder Brandon Rogalski, project manager Chris Bulak, superintendents Todd Rieger and Frank Mendicino, and project engineer Dan Hefley to execute these concepts. The Shelbys envisioned a home primed for entertaining, so the layout pivots around spaces that shift according to the type of gathering, from sunlit brunches to cocktail hours. “We knew the living room had to be this long space that took advantage of the full view,” says Pickert. Accordingly, the team situated the room alongside the south terrace facing Michigan Avenue. Guests can easily circulate between indoor seating near the marble fireplace and outdoor lounging around the fire pit—surrounded by a lush sanctuary of topiary lilacs and boxwoods composed by landscape designer Jayson DeGeeter. As the sun sets and the city’s lights flicker on, the festivities transition to “our core of sexy nighttime rooms with darker finishes,” notes Stillwaugh. Take the dining room for instance, aglow in amber-hued light that filters through a custom blown-glass installation. The space is further cocooned with tinted glass panels featuring an inner layer of shimmering metallic mesh. Not just a pretty façade, these built-ins double as illuminated wine displays, which,

as Rogalski explains, were carefully engineered to control temperature and humidity. The team also reconsidered typically pragmatic rooms as potential areas for spontaneous socializing. One such space is Tom’s office, which transforms after hours into an intimate cocktail spot, the midnight palette mirroring the room’s view of the iconic black steel John Hancock Center. For the kitchen, the couple “really wanted something that felt like a bar lounge,” says Craig. To meet that desire, half of the room’s footprint gives way to a vast island that doubles as a bar counter. Though these rooms embody distinct personalities, the dwelling still feels unified by a repeated grid motif on the walls. Materials vary, from cowhide and brass in the office to walnut and textured plaster in the kitchen, yet the spaces “are all held together by that geometry,” explains Pickert. The dramatic dark terrazzo floors also became an aesthetic through line, featuring “larger chunks of aggregate to give it a deep, rich look,” says Bulak. As Craig and her team had designed the couple’s previous apartment, they retained many of their existing Art Deco-esque furnishings. But, Stillwaugh explains, “since this home had a more contemporary architectural envelope, we looked forward to adding some modern furnishings.” Newer pieces like a curvaceous Vladimir Kagan sofa and a straw marquetry cabinet introduce more dynamic silhouettes. The couple’s existing art collection of abstract paintings and black-and-white photography also proved key to animating the abode. From Peter Beard’s languid Maureen Gallagher and a Late Night Feeder in the living room to Simen Johan’s famed buffalo photograph in the hide-clad office, “we were very deliberate in how we could punctuate the architecture and design using art,” says Craig. Just as artwork helped cultivate the atmosphere, so too did the lighting design by Nathan Orsman. The lack of previous wiring made room “for a custom ecosystem, which means every light in the unit can be adjusted to whatever the couple wants,” notes Rogalski. At night in particular, the precisely calibrated network offers warm illumination while avoiding any harsh reflections against the glass windows that could obscure views. Indeed, Chicago’s metropolitan charm feels woven into every element of this new home— perhaps most so when night falls and the skyline starts to glimmer. Perched up so high, says Craig, “you really get a sense of looking out over the city as it begins to shine.”

Tasked with transforming a bare-bones penthouse into an elegant abode, a team led by architect and designer Joan Craig created spaces suitable for entertaining on both a grand and intimate scale. This cozy seating area in the living room proves ideal for conversations, with Mattaliano chairs around a coffee table by the same brand. The straw marquetry cabinet features doors by Alexander Lamont and handles by Ged Kennett.

Connected to a terrace overlooking the city, the elongated living room consists of a procession of seating areas, made luminous with Venetian plastered walls by Simes Studios. y artworks speak softly,” says mixedmedia artist Dana De Ano. “They don’t shout in your face.” De Ano’s delicate, ethereal pieces—which comprise found fabric and material scraps sewn onto heavyweight printmaking paper, often combined with paint and graphite—are instead intended to give viewers room to breathe. The artist developed her technique while pursuing her master’s in painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There she began integrating fabric into her work—so much so that a teacher suggested she go into fiber art. Though De Ano was adamant at the time that painting and drawing were her passions, she eventually found a method that blended her interests. She begins every piece by considering the specific material she’s decided to work with— be it linens, paint chips, bathing caps or other interesting finds. “I have stacks and stacks of different colored scraps around my studio,” the artist says. “I scout items from places like estate sales, and I have people bring me things. But I also feel like the pieces find me sometimes.” As De Ano decides how to incorporate her chosen material onto the paper (“I try to have a conversation with it,” she muses), she begins sketching. Once she has an idea in mind, she moves on to her printmaking paper. “I start with a blank piece and it’s almost a dialogue between a broken and fixed thing,” she says. “I think of all of us as kind of broken, so my process is a mending or a suturing.” Before attaching the materials to the paper, the artist often “breaks the ground” by adding paint or graphite. “I also burn, rip, tear and crumple the paper to give it more depth and texture,” she adds. Then, De Ano sews on the material with a care and tenderness akin to mending a beloved sweater or soft toy. De Ano sees her works as abstract landscapes, though admits that’s not always apparent to everyone. “It’s more of a loose reading of a landscape,” she explains. “They’re places that my mind can escape to, and there’s always a degree of turmoil, callousness or turbulence. They’re not always the pretty pictures they appear to be.” But what viewers see, De Ano notes, is completely up to them. “The work is my responsibility and it’s the viewer’s responsibility to be left wondering,” she says. “They can enter and exit with what they need emotionally— or at least closer to what they need.”

Artist Dana De Ano uses found materials ranging from vintage linens and lawn chair webbing (below) to purse fabric, book covers, photos, scarves and crinoline (bottom). For Verona 2 (left) De Ano applied graphite and paint to printmaking paper, then embroidered it with book covers, velvet fabric and canvas from a vintage purse.

exas native Jeremiah Bickham was excited to put down roots in Chicago, but the process took a little longer than he expected. The thirtysomething bachelor, who’d moved to the Windy City for his career, spent 18 months evaluating dozens of real estate listings—often viewing up to 10 units per day online. Few were worth seeing in person, and none made his heart leap. Then one day, the seventh-floor penthouse of a century-old former textile factory in the West Loop with high ceilings, ample natural daylight and industrial character hit the market. By the time the sun set, he had made an offer. “They don’t make them like this anymore,” he muses. “It was love at first sight.” While Jeremiah adored the early 20th-century bones, the dated decor and finishes from the condo’s most recent update in the 1990s left much to be desired. After inhabiting the space for two years, he commissioned interior designer Devon Wegman to oversee a down-to-the-studs renovation that took nearly 18 months. “Jeremiah had a very specific vision and wanted every inch completely customized in detail,” Wegman says. “That resulted in an even stronger design because it’s so fine-tuned to him.” Striking the right balance was crucial. “We love raw elements, but we wanted the space to feel elevated” says the designer, who worked with builder Pete Gemmel. This meant material choices were key. In the open kitchen, an exposed concrete column and copper piping comfortably coexist with wire-brushed white oak cabinetry and elegant white marble countertops. Steps away, luxurious porcelain wall tile serves as a backsplash in the newly created oak bar area with open shelving and a built-in wine refrigerator. “The tile is polished but still gives a nod to the raw ruggedness of the space,” Wegman explains. While many of the designer’s clients shy away from finishes that are less durable, Jeremiah relished the opportunity to incorporate whatever his heart desired—which included some highermaintenance selections. Made of a patinated living

brass, the custom range hood must be waxed regularly to maintain its appearance. And despite marble’s reputation as a porous and easily stainable stone, Jeremiah had no qualms about using it throughout the interior. In the living room, for example, a tailored sectional sofa and a pair of low-slung chairs surround a marble cocktail table. The veiny stone also clads the walls of the main bathroom, accented by gray porcelain tile and warm oak cabinetry. “Jeremiah wanted a dramatic, luxurious feel,” Wegman says, pointing to the fluted-marble accent tiles in the shower. That fluted detail is echoed in the adjacent bedroom, where Wegman covered the wall behind the headboard in handcrafted slatted oak stained in a rich, dark hue. While Jeremiah was at first unsure about that decision, Wegman convinced him it would contribute to the posh hotel room vibe he envisioned, and it has since become one of his favorite elements—especially at night when the lamp light creates dramatic shadows. “It adds so much warmth,” he says. Wegman also created a strong focal point in the upstairs loft, incorporating a custom dark-stained media cabinet with white marble countertops and open shelving that floats in front of an antiqued mirror backsplash. “This space is meant to have a nostalgic vibe, almost like a speakeasy,” Wegman explains. Touches of brass in the overhead and floor lighting create a warm cozy glow at the end of the day when Jeremiah relaxes on the room’s green crushed-velvet sofa. “It has a Mad Men-esque style,” the designer says of the showstopping piece. “That’s his place to unwind and relax.” The true success of the project can be credited to Wegman’s ability to understand what Jeremiah desired from his home. “I’m not a designer,” Jeremiah notes. “I don’t ‘speak’ design. But I would describe what I wanted to Devon and she would translate that into beautiful, functional elements.” And once those elements all came together, Jeremiah says the reality turned out even better than the renderings. “It’s a unique space with a lot of history that I wanted to honor,” he adds, noting the sense of joy he feels when entering the wellappointed space. “We nailed it.”

WATER WORKS

Interior Design: Tom Stringer, Tom Stringer Design Partners

Steering the interiors away from splashy kitsch, designer Tom Stringer selected quality pieces with personality for this vacation home on Walloon Lake. For the entry, he paired rope sconces from Exante Antiques in New York with a vintage console from Palm Beach, Florida-based FS Henemader Antiques. A mirror by Brownstone Furniture completes the vignette.

L

akeside living is a distinct experience in the Midwest, particularly in Michigan. Sparkling views, rolled cuffs, loose dinner plans—it offers the freedom of mixing your own drink but not before earning it in the sun and splash. That character— open, relaxed and inherently rooted—feels different from other waterfront destinations. Tom Stringer understands theses subtleties. The designer spent summers sailing nearby. His great-great grandfather built a family home not far from his clients’ property in Walloon Lake, a logging community settled in the late 1800s. Once the railway arrived, the area, which is lavished with natural beauty, became a fashionable escape for Midwestern industrialist families wilting from city life. Stringer’s longtime clients are avid boaters who have generational history in the region. He deftly designed their main residence, a stately but comfortable family abode, when their kids were still anticipating the tooth fairy. This second dwelling they asked him to design would serve as a summer cottage for their three now-grown children to share with their partners, family and friends. The project was about relishing intangibles—taking in inspired views, crowning a new board game champion and connecting the family to a place that means something special. “I looked at the traditions from my childhood and my own residences in that area. That’s what I draw from—I get its DNA,” says Stringer. “It takes some discipline because a dwelling on an inland lake or on Lake Michigan is not a house on Cape Cod or a Southern home on the ocean— they’re all different versions of waterside.” Inspired by the classic yacht club guest house aesthetic, Stringer steered the nautical design to a crisp, well-defined finish. The clients prefer bold, bright colors, which led to a primary palette of white, blue, red and yellow—all the hues found in maritime signal flags. Too much white, the designer notes, would have risked looking overly patriotic. But the balance is there, anchored by a tonal trio of blues that move throughout while inviting other shades into the mix, like the

unexpected glossy black in the “hideout” room (as Stringer refers to it). These shifts sidestep being “relentlessly match-y,” he explains. “There’s a formula, but one that we’re trying to break just enough that it doesn’t feel formulaic.” Nautical themes are not for the uninitiated. One shipwrecked trinket or overzealous fish motif can skid into gift shop territory. Stringer expertly bypassed the kitsch and coral prints (“It’s a Midwestern lake house; it’s not coastal,” he points out) with signature restraint. “We focused on a few things of real quality to carry the theme,” the designer says. He sourced antique pond yachts and encased them in glass for the dining area. A series of midcentury shipbuilder’s half-block models flank the fireplace in the family room. Even the custom semicircular sofa frame in the living room recalls the seat of a vintage sailboat. Homes on the water tend to evoke the atmosphere of a long holiday weekend, and Stringer emphasized that with unscripted informality. The antique French farmhouse table, for example, feels lived in. “You want patina so the first nick doesn’t disqualify the piece,” he notes. “This is a summer house—you don’t want to spend a lot of time thinking about caring for it.” The lower level serves as a comfortable lounge, and the bunk room—which sleeps six—brings to mind childhood summer nights. The dwelling also came with a working but unremarkable vintage piano. Following the summer cottage tradition of repurposing and reimagining furniture, Stringer had it painted to suit the relaxed mood. “It’s my first blue piano,” he admits. “I didn’t want it to take itself too seriously.” This lighthearted addition proved popular—the kids spent their first night in the new abode at the piano belting out tunes. The primary bedroom overlooks the lake, so Stringer enhanced that sense of floating on the water with hues of blue and white. In the bathroom, he selected a wallcovering with a pattern “somewhere between nautical and quilt. It has a cozy innocence to it,” he says— a descriptor that can be applied to the residence as a whole. “For me, it was about honoring the past,” explains the designer. “This is a new version of an old family home, and someday it will be an old family home.”

In the family room, a Noir game table and chairs from CB2 serve as the perfect place for some friendly competition. Continuing the nautical theme, two rope chandeliers by Jamie Young Co. offer a clean and minimal look. Stringer sourced the antique half-hull models on either side of the fireplace from Lannan Gallery in Massachusetts. A Sherrill Furniture sofa and the clients’ own armchairs prime the space for vacation lounging.

Right: While there was no heavy renovation, Stringer was intent on honoring the home’s past. “We added the wood beams and wood planking to the ceilings and brought the beadboard back in,” the designer explains. “This library of materials takes it back from house to cottage.” The built-ins in the living room host an array of vintage objects, including a set of woven wicker wine bottles from France. Opposite: The curved panel-back sofa in the living room is a custom design. Julian Chichester bobbin chairs upholstered in Pindler fabric and a rug from Watson Smith capture the play of blue and white perfectly. Brunschwig & Fils drapery frames striking lake views.

Above: The charmingly named “hideout room” has a 20th-century-lake-house feel thanks to its Noir spindle beds— painted a glossy black to sidestep any repetitiveness in the color scheme. Accenting the space are a Craig McAllister photograph and Arteriors lamps with custom red shades. Opposite: Playing with shades of blue in the powder bath, Stringer selected a patterned Schumacher wallpaper and added navy shades to the existing sconces. The sleek Signature Hardware mahogany vanity adds a sophisticated touch.

EN MASSE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

W

“Architecture is not a static element, but one that develops and changes over time. We are inspired by the stories it can tell.”

hen Mike Shively, AIA, launched his namesake firm in 2015, he did so with the idea that architectural design should be a collaborative, fluid process. Key milestones, such as Lucas Goldbach, AIA, joining him as partner and design director in 2016 and the recent rechristening of Mike Shively Architecture to En Masse Architecture and Design, have proven that principle true. Today the award-winning team at En Masse is among the most in-demand architecture and design firms in the country, with an impressive portfolio of residential, commercial and hospitality projects to their credit. “We see our work as a collaboration, particularly with the client,” Shively says. “From the onset of each project, we are intimately in tune with their needs, tastes, visions and budget, which helps create a framework for our designs that is truly tailored to their lifestyle.” That approach has been a winning strategy. “Some of En Masse’s greatest achievements include collaborating with top industry leaders, building our state-of-the-art studio in Logan Square, winning key design

awards, having our work recognized in national design outlets and being asked to join the Design Leadership Network,” Goldbach shares. “But our major mark of success continues to be a well-designed and executed project. We consider that a true accomplishment.”

What style is En Masse known for? While we don’t have a particular style, there are common threads woven through our work. For example, we prioritize natural light because it lends a casual, welcoming feel and connects interior spaces to the exterior environment. What type of project would you love to take on? We love designing mountain homes. The unique challenges they present—incorporating views, climate, materiality, etc.—presents a wealth of design opportunities. To this point, what has been your greatest success? Building a studio of diverse and interesting professionals who bring their skills, interests, energy and personalities to our projects.
