6 Ways to Create a New Life after the Death of a Spouse “Till death do us part.” This vow is a part of most wedding ceremonies in the West. And when the moment comes when death separates a union that has lasted for years, it is one of the most terrible kinds of loss that exists. One moment a couple is happily married and the next one of them is alone with only memories and perhaps pictures and videos as proof that the person ever existed. So how do you cope in the aftermath of a spouse who has died especially if you are elderly? Here are some tips to help you cope.

Seek out someone who has gone through what you are going through: Having the support of loved ones in the face of such a loss is one thing but finding someone who knows exactly what you are going through is quite another. Therefore, seek out the support of others who have lost a spouse. You can generally find people like this by joining a support group. Be open to the unknown: Don’t shut yourself off from the world in the face of loss. Be open to new experiences in the aftermath of a spouse’s death. Chances are that spouse would not like for you to remain frozen in time. Take care of your health: Studies have shown that the risk of death for the surviving spouse goes up, particularly in the first three months of bereavement. This is often because survivors sometimes neglect their own health. Try to take care of yourself by eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep. Seek support: As we said earlier, there are places to go and people you can turn to who will be willing to help you to start your life over again. You just have to seek them out and be open to their help. Allow yourself to vent every thought, feeling and emotion: You have to embrace your pain before you can rid yourself of it. Thus, do not feel that any emotion you are feeling is unwarranted. Set goals for yourself: By setting goals for yourself – even little ones – you can restore the sense of self-esteem you may have lost when your spouse passed.
