Caught Katie “Kit” Gorton

CAUGHT

Katie “Kit” Gorton

“It looks like the Dreamworks moon. The one the guy sits in,” you say. We had stopped our walking for a moment as I had looked up. It was one of the smallest yet closest crescents I’d ever seen, like an orange rind resting in the sky. “How does it not hit the moon?” “What?” You ask. “If his hook sweeps away the clouds, how does his hook not get stuck on the back of the moon?” You stand there, puzzled. “He’s fly fishing.” You laugh a bit and say, “To be honest I don’t know much about fly fishing.” “Well when you fly fish your pole flies around, and you’re letting your line out. That’s how you cast it out so far. How does it not get caught on the back of the moon?” You laugh, and the ease makes me laugh too. And then I remember what happened.

“I can’t believe how unrealistic it is!” You say, as we start to go our separate ways. And I realize that was something you could have loved me for someday. It could be something you love me for now, regardless. It’s something he would’ve loved. He would’ve grabbed my head laughing, held our foreheads together, and kissed me, Whispering “I love you” all the while What if that had been us? And as I walk away, I apologize, I did not mean to fall in love
