WHAT MAKES THE FOX SO DEVILISH?

Madeline Perreard

“In early Christian and medieval thought the fox was considered to be a demonic animal…because of its slyness and cunning it characterizes both the ruler who does not fear god and a cunning person in general” Hans-Jörg Uther, Asian Folklore Studies

What makes the fox so devilish? Its coat an ode to fire

When did heat become so hellish and Summer herself a liar?

Where are these ideas born? Of flames wicked and waters calm

Of women wild and awful Dancing in Lucifer’s palm Below the cloak of midnight Us fearless creatures meet

A fuchsia fever churning beneath our smiling cheeks

The mother bear groans as twigs snap under calloused feet

Hell on Earth sent by the fox masterfully out of reach

Has the oak tree always been wise? And the willow a tragedy forever?

When there are no more human eyes Will evil finally surrender?
