Green House® Project Coming to the Lutheran Campus in 2022 Although it has been delayed by the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have some exciting news to share about the future of Lutheran and the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center (LHRC) in particular! Over the next two years, we will be transitioning away from our current “big box” institutional-style nursing home in favor of a new, state-of-the-art project called Green House®. The Green House® project is a revolutionary method of skilled nursing care, residency, and rehabilitation that offers residents a more meaningful life in a smaller space that truly feels like a home. The nursing home stereotypes of multiple floors, long corridors, and lonely rooms are replaced with close-knit communal living spaces for up to twelve residents per home. Each Green House® small home features open floorplan living spaces, activity spaces, kitchen and dining areas as well as private living quarters that combine all of our traditional skilled nursing and rehabilitation services in a small, home-like setting. Continued inside, see Green House Project.

A Message from Gwen Spring is on the way, but I sure wish the pandemic would be on its way out! It is now the one-year mark since the pandemic interrupted our lives beyond comprehension. While it has been challenging for all of us, I am so grateful that you remained faithful and generous to help Lutheran with all its extra costs. Because of you, our residents have remained safe and well cared for. You made sure that they all have a life well lived – every day! All of us at Lutheran cannot thank you enough for all that you do! Gwen Axelson Development Officer

This edition of the newsletter serves includes the list of our donors for 2020; including the members of the 2020 Touching Lives Club, the Juliet Anderson Rosch Society, and all the thoughtful memorial gifts. Your generosity went well beyond my imagination with the 2020 year-end appeal – over $29,000! Many of our golf sponsors contributed, as they were unable to do so with no golf tournament this year. The gift brick program remains very popular! Hopefully, we will be able to have the brick tea this year for both 2020 and 2021.

It is not yet know if we will be able to have the donor recognition lunch for our Touching Lives Club and the Rosch Society, but our fingers are crossed! This year we welcome two new members to the Cornerstone Council; Roger E. Johnson and Richard and Terry Turner, Jr. We have every reason to believe that we will be able to have our 17th Annual Lutheran Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, August 16, at Moon Brook. Some details are included in this newsletter, as there are usually some single spots to fill. The tournament started in 2004; and since then, our dedicated sponsors have raised over $525,000! If you’d like to receive your newsletter via e-mail, please send an email to me at gwen@lutheran-jamestown.org. You are so important to our residents and everyone we serve. You are the driving force behind our mission of supporting an individual’s journey through life with compassion, dignity, and respect. Thank you so much for your faithful and generous giving!

Green House® Project (continued from front) We plan to build four of these small, ranch-style homes (two on each side of Gustavus Ave.) in the area where the oldest portions of G.A. Family Services currently sit. Some of the existing G.A. buildings will be removed and replaced with these new small homes. The existing nursing home, known as the “Legacy Building”, will be retrofitted as-is to incorporate Green House® style living spaces and programming without the need to alter the structure itself. The architecture of each new Green House® small home will feature exposed brick, modern design, beautiful landscaping, and more. The small homes will look incredible on the outside with high-quality care happening inside, all while blending in like any other home in any other neighborhood! We are among the first trailblazers in western New York to incorporate Green House® small homes into our skilled nursing care planning, and you can be among the first donors to help us fund this life-changing program. To get involved, please call Gwen Axelson at 716-665-8137!

COVID-19, Vaccines, Staff Testing, & More

Grace Garvey, 92, was the first resident on the Lutheran Campus to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Beside her is Stacey Conyer, LPN, who helped monitor residents for any changes in their health shortly after vaccination along with Lutheran’s physician, Nurse Practitioner, and other clinical staff. “History has been made!” said Garvey. LHRC continues to take admissions; but with elective surgeries having been on hold and only just re-starting, rehab referrals have not been coming in. All new admissions must have a negative COVID-19 test, and they are tested again on Day 5 to confirm they are still negative. The LHRC has been very proactive protecting from COVID-19. Staff continue to be screened upon arrival to work and upon return if they leave the building for any reason. Staff are tested twice weekly now, due to the recent Governor’s Executive Order. Regulations still require testing of all residents every 3-7 days after a positive staff or resident is identified; until 14 days have passed with no positive results for anyone. Through the federal vaccine program, the first vaccine clinic was held on December 28, and 86 residents and 75 staff received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer) from CVS Pharmacy. First and second doses were administered again on January 18, with 40 staff getting their first vaccine and 73 getting their second dose. Thus far, a total of 98 residents have received the vaccine. The final vaccine clinic was held on February 8. Though our official on-campus clinics for residents and staff have ended, we’re still able to vaccinate new workers and new residents in batches as they come to us. On December 29, LHRC had its third infection control survey. Policies and procedures for COVID-19 and Infection Control were reviewed, as well as resident medical records. The surveyors were on the units observing infection control practices and interviewing staff and residents to ensure the proper education to staff and communication residents and their families regarding our positive COVID activity in the facility. No violations of state or federal regulations were found. On March 9, four surveyors from the NYSDOH were on site for the fourth Infection Control Survey; and after observation and review of policies, paperwork, documents, etc., they did not find any violations of state or federal regulations. The surveyors said how thankful they were for the work that the entire staff does each and every day. That says a great deal about Lutheran! Though visitation has been on hold, a new visitation plan has been developed in accordance with the most recent NYS-DOH guidance and we hope to open for in-person visitation very soon.

G.A. Family Services Program Updates

The Accountability and Responsibility Program was approached by the Deputy Commissioner of Adult, Children, and Family Services in 2020 to expand the services provided; and this addition was approved in January of 2021. This will mean additional staff and more group sessions, and expanding the youth that are served; as well as increasing the budget for the program due to the success that the A&R Program has in the community. Ten youth started a new session in the A&R Program in November and completed in the beginning of January. The program is going more remote with only two youth at a time, food delivery to families, and no big group activities; due to the current surge in COVID-19 cases in Chautauqua County. The program does use the gym at the school and outdoor space on campus; allowing for activities with the teens to have much needed in-person support and safe socialization. The youth have been very compliant with the mask mandate and have been so happy to have the program in their lives when many other activities had to end. The Regional Permanency Center (RPC) program that serves post-adoptive and post-guardianship families across all of western New York has been extended into 2023; it was initially scheduled to end in March of 2022) . We hope it will be extended ever further at that time. The RPC families and staff were extremely happy at this information.

Adoption Spotlight As 2020 came to a close, this wonderful little guy was adopted after 1,062 days in foster care! Zaire is officially a Bennett now! G.A. staff were thrilled to be there for this beautiful day, socially distanced and/or remotely, as Zaire was adopted by his amazing long time foster family.

Zaire couldn’t contain himself in the court session and was so happy to make his voice heard. As his shirt says, “Out of my way, it’s Adoption Day!” We are honored to be part of this family’s journey... congratulations to the Bennett Family!

Did you know? On any given day, there are nearly 424,000 children in foster care in the United States. Though the common perception is that a majority of children in foster care are very young, the average age of children entering foster care is 8 years old and 1/3 of them are people of color.

G.A. Foster Care Staff Host Drive-Thru Gift Events with Santa in Jamestown & West Seneca For children in foster care, guardianship, in a health home, or in the adoption process through G.A. Family Services, the holiday months can often be a confusing time. However, one tradition the families and children look forward to year after year is their annual Christmas dinner with Santa. This group event is when gift donations come in from the community and are given to the children by Santa himself. The events in Jamestown and West Seneca were at risk of being cancelled this year due to COVID-19, but the staff were determined to deliver the magic of Christmas by reimagining the events for 2020. “Usually our Christmas events feature dinner, live music, activities, and a special visit with Santa. We support over 350 kids between both offices each year. We had to do something,” said Ericka Garcia-Allison, LMSW, Director of Community Based Services at G.A. Family Services. “In coordination with Santa, we began working on drivethru style events for the families to visit us in a sociallydistant, safe way,” said Garcia-Allison. Christmas gift donations came in for the children (as they always do) from thoughtful community individuals, businesses, and organizations, but the logistics of the new event was the focus of much of the planning. In coordination with the Maintenance Department at Lutheran and other helpful individuals, a gazebo on the Lutheran Campus and a parking lot in West Seneca were turned into “Santa’s Workshop” where donated children’s gifts, wreaths, and snacks were distributed car-by-car, as families pulled up to the curb at their prescheduled times. All food items were either donated by commercial businesses or prepared ahead of time to follow all recommended health safety protocols to protect the families and staff from COVID-19 exposure.

Hultquist Place Update We continue our vigilance against COVID-19. As with the LHRC, HP staff are tested weekly and continue to be screened upon arrival to work and upon return if they leave the building for any reason. Vaccine clinics were held on January 18, February 8, and March 1. 96% of residents and 75% of staff have been fully vaccinated. 3% of the residents received their first dose. Hultquist Place is now requesting its vaccines from NYS. We await further guidance from the Department of Health regarding reopening to the public and allowing residents more freedom to come and go. Over the holidays, the activities department decorated the hallways, dressed as elves, and delivered gifts costumed as Santa and Mrs. Claus. It was great to hear the resident’s laughter and see their mood lightened by the antics of the members of this talented department. They continue to entertain with hallway games and one to one visits providing manicure service, take-out meals from local restaurants, and light conversation. Virtual church services continue as well. Despite some reticence, everyone here, including the residents, are becoming more computer savvy. Telehealth appointments no longer seem strange and visiting with family on a tablet is not abnormal. Chef Carm Vullo (left), Stephanie Reichardt (right), and other dietary staff carved and served Thanksgiving turkey dinner room-to-room for HP residents in November.

Music Therapy with SUNY Fredonia Kim Mancino, former Music Therapist at Lutheran and current Senior Lecturer at SUNY Fredonia, has been hosting one-on-on virtual music lessons with the residents of Hultquist Place every Thursday throughout the pandemic. Students from her college classes work with our residents on their vocal and music talents using video chat technology to make up for the physical distance and social distance! The inter-generational music therapy experience provides a great mood and health boost for the residents, keeping them connected to others in new ways. It also gives the students real world teaching and volunteering experience to further their future careers. Each resident gets to participate at their own pace!

Residents Welcome Edgewood Commons Reopening Senior Housing will undertake two capital projects heading into 2021. Carlson Tower will have a stair-chair installed in the south stairwell of the building. This will give residents the ability to ascend or descend the stairs in the event of an elevator shutdown. The Lindgren Apartments will have seven automatic handicap door openers installed. Senior Life Matters’ (SLM) staff successfully completed the 2020 Medicare Open Enrollment Period, exceeding last year’s numbers by serving 698 individuals through 478 appointments. Approximately 95% of scheduled appointments were in-person, with COVID-19 protocols being adhered to. The Edgewood Commons’ Café continues to offer Tuesday lunches by reservation only; and a new format, made to order breakfast every Thursday from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Also, something new are regularly scheduled “enhanced” dinner take-out nights, with the first one held for Valentine’s Day. The menu included red wine braised short ribs, lobster mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus with hollandaise sauce, and chocolate Cake. Edgewood Communities continues to monitor NYS updates for information on vaccinating the residents. Edgewood is working with LeadingAge NY and the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging in an effort to have a vaccination clinic on campus. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to register through the NYS “Am I Eligible” website or through the NYS toll free vaccination hotline.

Elizabeth Dooher-Abplanalp Recognized as the 2020 Employee of the Year Lutheran’s President and CEO, Tom Holt, as well as LHRC’s Administrator, Pam Nordin, presented this Employee of the Year award for 2020 to Elizabeth Dooher-Abplanalp, Lutheran’s Music Therapist! Throughout the year, Liz has developed many programs for the residents including Relaxation Group, Remote Choir, and Dulcimer group as well as create beautiful videos of residents singing to share with them and their families. In a year full of challenges, Liz has directed and coordinated with different departments to create the Lutheran Variety Show, spending hours putting together music, props, and rehearsing to bring laughs and joy to staff and residents. Liz is a caring, positive, encouraging and compassionate person… as well as very talented and we’re honored to have her on our team!

RSVP / FGP Rebranded as AmeriCorps Seniors

Grandma Joann introduces herself to the students with a photo and a brief note to the class to begin the Pen Pal Program.

The Chautauqua County RSVP Program and the Foster Grandparent Program are part of a newly rebranded Federal program called AmeriCorps Seniors. RSVP was granted a new three-year; $75,000 annual grant; beginning April 1 of this year from AmeriCorps Seniors. The current federal grant had been due to expire on March 31 but the new grant will run through March 31, 2024.

The Lutheran Foster Grandparent Program in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany is working at staying in touch with the students, in hopes of returning to the classroom for the coming school year in September. In association with the Jamestown Community Learning Council, grandparents are assisting schools with assembling educational packets to send home to children to complete. These packets include following steps to complete a project that involves the family, while improving fine motor and reading skills. The Lutheran Foster Grandparent Program is also participating in an Intergenerational Pen Pal Program, which involves all the students in the partnering elementary classroom. These Pen Pal Program activities focus on improving literacy skills in students; including reading comprehension, letter writing, spelling, and handwriting/letter formation. The program also provides the students with emotional support during these unprecedented times. The teachers collect the letters from the students and packages them for the foster grandparents to pick up at the school. The foster grandparents then write back, and the teachers distribute to the students. With the unknowns of the pandemic, this process will continue indefinitely.

The Foster Grandparent Program has been instrumental in volunteering to assemble the educational packets for students.

SAVE THE DATE: 17th Annual Lutheran Foundation Charity Golf Tournament Although our signature event was cancelled in 2020 due to the public health crisis we face, we’re excited to announce the return of the Lutheran Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, now in its 17th year! Mark your calendars for Monday, August 16, at the Moon Brook Country Club in Jamestown, NY. Our generous sponsors and supporters have helped us raise over $525,000 since inception in 2004. The tournament is a four-man, two best-ball format with a noon shot gun start. You’re welcome to arrive a little early beginning at 10:30 a.m. if you want to get in a bit of practice. There are sometimes single spots to fill, so if you’re interested, give Gwen a call at 716-665-8137.
