Leeds United avholdt sin sedvanlige “Annual Dinner & Dance” i november. Tonen mellom Leeds United AFC og Leeds United Supporters Club har langt ifra vært den beste gjennom det siste halvannet året, og situasjonen har tilspisset seg ytterligere gjennom de siste månedene.

Under middagen som ble holdt på ærverdige Queens Hotel i Leeds sentrum, var også endelig “Årets Spiller” i regi av LUSC til stede. Rob Hulse ble kåret til supporternes “Årets Spiller” i England forrige sesong, og stilte opp for å motta sitt synlige bevis på akkurat det. Forrige sesong fikk ikke Neil Sullivan tillatelse av Leeds United til å motta sitt trofè, etter ordre fra høyeste hold. Alan Smith ble også solgt sesongen før der igjen, og Hulse var den første vinneren på tre år som var til stede for å motta supporternes hederspris. I tillegg til Rob Hulse var det også flere øvrige store personligheter i Leeds United’s historie på plass. Supporterklubbens president, Eddie Gray, var til stede, det samme var Gray’s mangeårige lagkamerat, Jack Charlton. Stopperen som fortsatt har rekorden for flest Leeds-kamper gjennom tidene holdt en morsom og fin tale til forsamlingen, og viste at “de gamle fortsatt er eldst”. Videre var det taler fra både LUSC-formann Ray Fell, vise-ordfører i Leeds, Jack Dunn, og selvsagt vår president, Eddie Gray. LUSC-formannen, Ray Fell, holdt denne gang en meget følelsesladet tale på vegne av alle LUSCmedlemmer, og beskrev situasjonen vi befinner oss i på en meget fin måte. Vi har valgt å trykke hele talen til formannen, for at alle våre medlemmer skal få et lite innblikk i hvilken situasjon vi har mellom supporterklubben og Leeds United. En situasjon som egentlig er ufattelig, men som likefullt er hverdagen for oss som supportere av Leeds United i 2006... “My deputy Lord Mayor, - Mr. President, - Honoured Guests and colleagues or should I say my Merry Men as Mr. Bates so aptly put it. - He was right - you are a merry bunch.
Perhaps we could extend the theme further with Mick Hewitt for Little John, Chris Beeton for a lovable Friar Tuck and Eric for Mitch the Millers son. No prizes for guessing who would qualify for the Sheriff of Nottingham.
But, back on a serious note, I have worked with one member of our merry band, in one role or another, since the early seventies and that covers only a part of the time that he has held office within the Supporters Club. I refer of course to our Secretary Eric who, - some two or three weeks ago, completed 48 years as Secretary of the Leeds United Supporters Club - and I think that is something special. I understand he only took the job on a temporary basis until they found someone to do it permanent - stick at it Eric - We are still looking. The Supporters Club is grateful for those years and for Forty- six years of his service he was recognised and appreciated by successive Boards of Leeds United. What a pity that the present Board, - despite having representation who have known him for many of those 48 years - do not acknowledge that service.
I am grateful for the opportunity to welcome the Deputy Lord Mayor and his good lady and to thank him for honouring us with his presence. His invitation carries with it our thanks and appreciation to the Leeds City Council for their assistance in helping us to find such a prestigious location for the placing of our tribute to the Gentle Giant. It is a fitting location for the man who gave so much to the citizens - and City - of Leeds. We are also grateful that we have the Sculpture here with us tonight. Tonight is our presentation event and I am pleased therefore to welcome Rob Hulse. His success was achieved despite carrying injury through many of the games he played. We regret your leaving our Leeds United Rob, although we are now used to losing our best Formann, LUSC; Ray Fell
players, but we appreciate you cared enough to be here tonight to receive your acknowledgement. You will have seen from the list of previous winners as displayed in the menu, that it reads like a who’s who of Leeds United footballers and you can be assured that by winning the vote of our members you have truly earned the right to be included in that company. Oh yes one other thing; Please thank your Chairman for allowing you to be with us tonight.
Last seasons results fluctuated up and down before floundering so disastrously at Cardiff and, despite to-days result which we hope is the first step on the road to recovery, performances so far this season have been the least inspiring efforts that I have witnessed in 60 years of supporting the Club. The tragic second half at Barnsley was particularly hard to accept following a first half of the misleading promise of improvement. The highlight of the day was the fact that despite the anguish of a team lying positioned in the bottom three in the table, there was still 4000 Leeds Fans singing “We are Leeds and we are proud of it”. That’s what I call top team support. It is a pity that the team do not appear to have the same pride. It is hard to watch a Leeds Team with so little desire to win.

Dennis Wise will have my support and all your support and I wish him success in bringing the good times back to Elland Road. His success will be our success and we will back him all the way. I sincerely hope that come January he has some financial backing in order to improve the squad. We are, so far this season, watching a team heading for a relegation struggle and a little money spent on strengthening the playing squad will far outweigh the talk of new bars, shops and hotels and a strengthened team may even increase the attendance figures and help repay the outlay. It is quite frustrating being a Leeds United fan. We are often allowed sight of the promised land but we are seldom allowed to tread it, in fact never on a permanent basis. From Salonica to Ridsdale and his Board the trials and Tribulations have occurred on a regular basis - to remove the promise that we thought was within our grasp. Over the years we have had Chairmen and Managers in abundance - and the Club has been saved twice in the past 4 or 5 years which is a fact that we all accept and keep repeating without much evidence. We have numerous reports of take over bids and financial input that never materialise - remember the Sheik? There is only one constant factor at Elland Road and even that is being tested. I refer of course to the Leeds United Supporters, - not the Corporates, - the Supporters who are there no matter what the Clubs status is - and who are equal in voice and passion of any other fan base in the country.

I sometimes think it would have been better if the Wombles had taken over at Elland road and not the Caspian Group. And on top of all this - and amid the chaos - the Club have severed links with LUSC who donated £20000 plus to the Club every year. Did I say its frustrating - its almost enough to drive you into a pie and a pint in Billy‘s Bar. I must of course refer to the Club Chairmans page in to-days match programme. Once again it is devoted to the berating of others and, -if the Chairman has nothing of particular importance to tell his readers other than what it will cost them for various events and how the members club is growing, - he needs something to fill his page. In view of the fact that he does not recognise the Supporters Club I find it hard to understand why he continually voices his inaccuracies concerning the Supporters Club. In the Chairmans own words the matter in Scandinavia is Supporters Club business and the reference to financial matters is Scandinavian Supporters Club Business. The matter of Scarborough is not Supporters Club member suing supporters club member but rather

the Scarborough Supporters Club Branch seeking to recover what they allege is money which the break away Members Club tried to take with them when leaving the Supporters Branch.
Yes - The last year has been hard for the Supporters Club. Phil, Eric and myself have, - at times, - felt like the three little pigs waiting for the Wolf to huff and puff our house down. Thankfully the Supporters Club house is made of solid material and we are strong in our belief and knowledge that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent. LUSC have always supported Leeds United and worked to form a good relationship. We regret that our repeated offer of player sponsorship covering the last two years have been refused. In truth we were told that our offer would be accepted if we offered it under another name. How silly. We are still LUSC and we are still the core of the away support and we are still desirous of - and willing to - talk and work alongside the current Board should the opportunity arise. We ask nothing in return other than recognition of what we are. An independent Supporters Club. Given that - we will play our role - we are not in the business of damaging Leeds United.
One thing we are grateful for is the nudge in the right direction that recent experiences have given us. We have realised the need to re-assess ourselves and move forward. Tonight is testimony to that realisation - and I thank the members of the Dinner Dance Sub Committee that has worked so hard to organise our annual presentation. I also thank the Sponsors, including the Branches who have financially backed the event along with all of you who have supported by your presence. And I thank the Queens Hotel for the Co-operation and help they have given us in the build up to our event and particularly for the excellent catering we have just sampled. I now look forward to further changes within the Supporters Club, as work on improved use of technology within our framework and work being progressed on marketing and image bear fruit. It is pleasing to see so many of you present tonight and it is pleasing in particular to see representatives of our Scarborough Branch who have fought long and hard to continue flying the Supporters Club flag on the East Coast and have now brought their membership up to a figure that almost equals the total that stood before they were threatened by a breakaway group and a suggestion in the programme that was misleading and inaccurate. Space offered for their right of reply was not forthcoming. It is also great to know and welcome Branches from Ireland and friends from Scandinavia. A special welcome also to two members from our Horsforth Branch which has had to terminate its membership due to a lack of numbers. The two members are Bill Timms and Jim Saunders, who represented Horsforth Branch at the Executive for many years, - and, I am proud to say - were awarded their life membership cards earlier this evening by our President Eddie Gray.
My greatest thanks as always go to the Branches and their members for demonstrating their determination to protect a movement started 87 years ago by our predecessors who may rest content in the knowledge that the organisation is still in good and capable hands. Your efforts are important, never underestimate or doubt it, for it is you and not the football clubs who represent and organise the non-corporate supporter. The network has been formed over many years and it is not surprising that its success is criticised and coveted.
Finally we near the time of year when we make New Year resolutions or wishes and, yes, - you guessed it - I have a few.
I wish for this great football club of ours to break free from its financial shackles and lethargy.
I wish success to whoever runs this club, in their efforts to achieve a future that delivers on promises made.

I wish for a team of players that have the same pride in wearing the Club shirt as you have in supporting it.
I wish for programme pages that that show appreciation of existing fans and attempts to win new ones by introducing a pricing system that attracts - rather than detracts from - attendance at the ground, particularly the young fans who need to know that Leeds is the one and only United and they are its future fan base.
And finally my wish is that the Supporters who have stayed loyal throughout too few peaks - and too many troughs - over recent years finally have a team to be proud of and the finger of fate that has too often dogged our progress finally disappears and we have the success that truly and sincerely has us all - MARCHING ON TOGETHER

Presidenten i LUSC, Eddie Gray, sammen med tidligere formann i LUSCOS, Sverre Røbech. Gray holdt selv en flott tale til forsamlingen, og minnet på at det kommer tider etter disse... Eddie Gray tok som kjent over som president i LUSC etter Elsie Revie, enken etter Don Revie, som døde i april i fjor.

Mange medlemmer av LUSCOS har ikke helt fått med seg alle utspill fra Ken Bates omkring LUSCOS, og vårt forhold til Leeds United, Members Club og Ken Bates. Vi har fått flere spørsmål om hva som har skjedd i så måte, og hvordan LUSCOS vil forholde seg til dette.
Situasjonen for LUSCOS er rimelig klar. Vi er en “branch”, eller en avdeling av Leeds United Supporters Club. Det har vi vært siden midten av 80årene, og et er ingen ting som tyder på at LUSCOS blir lagt ned i sin nåværende form. LUSCOS har fått et nytt styre, men akkurat det er ingen grunn for at vi skal endre vår tilknytning til Leeds United Supporters Club (LUSC). Ken Bates har i omlag halvannet år nå drevet sin “Members Club”, og han har også forsøkt å få oss med i denne, men uten å ha fremmet noen formell henvendelse til LUSCOS omkring dette. Flere av våre medlemmer er med i “Members Club”, men uten at noen så langt har hatt spesielt mye skryt å komme med av den grunn. Snarere tvert imot. Samtidig som Leeds United forsøker å få LUSCOS innlemmet som en “Regional Members Club” har man også drevet en direkte skitten kampanje mot LUSCOS’ tidligere formann, Sverre Røbech, og det er ikke småtterier Bates har liret ut av seg i så måte. I kamp-programmene mot Stoke og Colchester denne høsten har han hatt direkt ufine angrep på måten LUSCOS har vært drevet på, og han har, sammen med sine informanter her på berget, gjort tilværelsen som Leeds-supporter her i Scandinavia til et mareritt for enkelte. Poenget med dette er selvsagt å splitte supporterne, og få flere medlemmer inn i Members Club, og som man kan lese ut av Colchester-programmet, har man som mål å sikre seg alle LUSCOS’ medlemmer som medlemmer i “Members Club” i løpet av kort tid. Det Bates har gjort, er å gå til enkelt-medlemmer i LUSCOS, og (forsøke å) manipulere disse, for deretter å bruke interne opplysninger på en verst mulig måte for LUSCOS. får. Derfor er det selvsagt svært viktig at vi står sammen slik situasjonen er i ferd med å utvikle seg. Etter at denne saken kom opp, har det vært et massivt press mot tidligere LUSCOS-formann Sverre Røbech, og han valgte etter en helhets-vurdering av situasjonen å trekke seg fra jobben som styreformann i LUSCOS på årets årsmøte i november. 23 23 23 23 23

Uansett, hele denne saken er en eneste stor tragedie for alle parter, og man kan saktens begynne å lure på hva enkelte kan få seg til å gjøre for egen vinnings skyld. Den som trodde at det å holde med en klubb, kun var forbundet med glede over å støtte sin klubb i tykt og tynt har neppe vært til stede på Elland Road i det siste, eller forsåvidt i styre-rommet i LUSCOS... Mye av den samme debatten som vi har hatt i LUSCOS, har man også hatt i Scarborough Branch. LUSC-formann Ray Fell var også inne på dette i sin tale. Her har en del driftige sjeler gått direkte til Leeds United og meldt avdelingen inn i “Regional Members Club”, uten at klubbens medlemmer er rådspurt. Man har brukt en stor del av Supporterklubbens penger til dette, men nå har heldigvis en del av de solide (gamle) medlemmene av avdelingen fått Scarborough-branch på fote igjen, og det pågår for øyeblikket rettslige tviser omkring bruken av avdelingens midler.

Som man kan lese i referatet fra årsmøtet - samt fra regnskapene som ble vedtatt av årsmøtet - så ble det ikke lagt frem dokumentasjon på noen av de svært alvorlige påstandene som ble fremmet. Ken Bates har likevel valgt å fortsette sin “vendetta” mot LUSCOS og Røbech, og slo altså til igjen i kampprogrammet mot Colchster. Nok en skivebom fra Mr. Bates, og hans informanter her i Skandinavia kan ikke ha fulgt særlig godt med på årsmøtet, ut i fra de påstandene han kommer med. Så kan man selvsagt lure på hva som er motivene bak alt dette. Det kan oppsummeres enkelt og greit med ett ord; Penger. Leeds United vil ha kloa i pengene som supporterklubbene genererer. Ikke nok med at supporterne skal betale blod-priser for å gå på kamp, man skal også betale ca. kr. 500,- pr. sesong for å være medlem av “Members Club”, samtidig som alt (eventuelt) overskudd fra selve driften av de lokale klubbene skal tilfalle Leeds United. Videre skal ikke (supporter)-klubbene ha råderett over egne midler, eller egen drift, men drive (supporter)klubben etter retningslinjer gitt fra Leeds United.
Dette er eksakt det samme som skjedde i Chelsea i sin tid, og modellen er kanskje utviklet noe i forhold til det som skjedde i snobbe-klubben i London. Vi tror ikke Leeds United makter å tre den samme løsningen ned over ørene på de trofaste supporterne av Leeds United. I Yorkshire lar man seg ikke pille på nesa av skatte-flyktninger fra Rivieraen...
