Editorial This issue does not only mark the half-way-point of my education here in Lund but also my last as Editor-in-Chief of Nådiga Lundtan. Still, the I just got here-feeling lingers. Starting university, I had high expectations of the student life and all it entailed. But I have found that it is a real challenge being able to attend all I intended to attend. In that aspect, being part of LundaEkonomerna is an excellent way to combine all the things a student life has to offer. Education, social, and career committees all mingle under the roof of Skånis, so there is an easy way to get a little bit of all. I would like to take this time to urge all LundaEkonomer to become an active member of the union. To pursue your ambitions, try out something new, meet new friends, learn new skills, and get invited to stupendous events. But above of all, I invite you to join Nådiga Lundtan! If you feel like economics and business are only some of your talents, and you want a professional forum to express your opinions, you should take the chance to join our student magazine! Nådiga Lundtan is a platform that does not only reach all the LundaEkonomer, but also influential people in the business and political world. We also give our members freedom to express themselves and conduct interviews with people who they might not have had the chance to otherwise meet. Being Editor and Editor-in-Chief has been an extremely rewarding experience. There has been plenty of hard work and late nights at Skånis, but also plenty of laughs and learning; about how to organize a group and how to get things done. We have also had some heated discussions concerning everything from minor grammatical technicalities to how best to word a request for a press pass to the Oscars (we are still awaiting their reply). Lastly, I would like to wish my young Padawan, Philip, the best of luck as the new Editor-in-Chief. I know he will make the LundaEkonom (jedi) council proud! May the Force be with him!

Crowded Skies In 1969, Apollo 11 took the human race in the form of Neil Armstrong and his crew to the surface of the moon for the first time in history. Though the space race was in full speed, it is to no ones surprise in this day and age that it was NASA, the American space agency, which accomplished the ever so impressive feat. Four decades later however, it is much less certain if the Americans, or even a state-funded agency, will land a human on the next rock in outer space. The Usual Suspects
and the rock we are hoping will save us all, Mars. Even though the Orion has passed recent (unmanned) test-flights there are no planned flights of it transporting humans. This begs the question whether or not the American space agency will be the first to land a human on, let us say, Mars.
The emptiness of space is quickly filling up. However, the recent years of space travel have lacked manned flights and rather focused on satellite and rover missions. Most recognized is NASA’s landing of Curiosity on Mars as well as the European Space Agency’s (ESA) landing of Philae on the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko Comet during the Rosetta mission. This trend, the lack of sending humans up in space (other than to the ISS), may however be coming to an end.
As mentioned above, ESA, comprising of most EU members as well as Norway and Switzerland, successfully reached a large comet in the outskirts of our solar system with the satellite Rosetta. Though being an impressive feat, ESA does not have a track record of sending humans beyond the ISS and does not seem to be breaking that trend anytime soon. The European population might have to face the fact that their blue flag may not be waving past our blue planet anytime soon.
In early December of 2014, NASA test launched their newest type of shuttle, the Orion. This is the first manned spacecraft designed by NASA since the retirement of the Discovery shuttles, which were built back in the 1980’s and had its last flights in 2011. The purpose of the Orion is to facilitate human exploration of the moon, asteroids,

have always had strong space programs but in recent times it is particularly India which has impressed the world. In late 2014, the nation successfully reached the Red Planet with one of their latest satellites, the PSLV-C25. The Indian mission was quickly praised for its cost-effective nature, specifically because it cost less than the making of the Academy Award nominee Gravity, depicting a fictional story of space travel. To be fair to director Alfonso Cuarón however, the leads, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, probably entail a higher salary than the entire team behind the launch of PSLV-C25.
I would not dare exclude Branson and his Virgin Group from perhaps joining the race to Mars in the future. Virgin Galactic has not been very successful as a recent test flight of their newest spacecraft, the VSS Enterprise, ended in a disastrous manner leaving one crew member dead.
One Small Step For many, a distinction between where the money comes from may seem uninteresting and unimportant in the larger scope of things. Nonetheless, it would possibly be an idelogical victory for capitalism if it were a private space agency which reached the next historic milestone for space travel. It is no longer certain whether a nation’s flag will lead us forward in human endeavors, or rather a company logo. Perhaps a new space race is dawning upon us. But this time it is between states and corporations rather than nations. And thankfully it is not fueled by the ashes of war, but rather by the entrepreneurial spirit and human curiosity. The result however, will hopefully be the same, extending the reach of the human race, one rock at a time.
The Crazy Ones States are still very much in the game but real progress, or attempts of it, is also being made in the private sector. The two biggest companies working towards manned space travel, as well as space tourism, are SpaceX and Virgin Galactic. In 2002, the former PayPal entrepreneur and founder of Tesla Motors made an addition to his professional portfolio by launching the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX). Elon Musk founded the company with the goal of reaching Mars and begin its colonization. Though the goal itself is an elaborate one and will take decades to implement, Musk and his partners have come a long way in just over 12 years. The company has developed two types of vehicles, the Falcon launch vehicles and the Dragon spacecraft, which have reached many historic achievements bearing in mind the nature of their funding (privately that is). Even though SpaceX has been successful with its multiple missions so far (delivering cargo to the ISS for example), they have not set any date for when a historic manned launch to Mars could take place.

Virgin Galactic was founded by Sir Richard Branson in 2004 and operates as a subsidiary of Virgin Group, Branson’s master creation. Though he already occupies the skies with the airline Virgin Atlantic, Branson’s reach seems to stretch beyond those 10 000 meters of commercial airliners. Unlike SpaceX, Virgin Galactic has the aspirations to commercialize space tourism, rather than reaching new frontiers for the human race. It may make for an unfair comparison of the two companies but

Vitaminerna D-vitaminet. Ämnet är enligt Wikipedia en grupp fettlösliga prohormoner som påverkar balansen mellan kalcium och fosfat i blodet. En enkel beskrivning av de små vita pillren (eller brustabletterna om man så vill), är att de förser kroppen med det nödvändiga D-vitaminet som normalt bildas i huden när man vistas i solen. Detta krävs för att upprätthålla ett normalt immunförsvar och stark benstomm. Eftersom vi i Norden erbjuds så få soltimmar under vinterhalvåret kan det vara bra att tillföra ämnet genom att förtära kosttillskott.
Det sägs att trender går i cykler och allting som någonsin varit inne kommer att komma tillbaka i folks, och framförallt de moderiktigas, medvetande. Om detta stämmer för piratbyxorna och bakmaskinen tycker jag vi låter vara osagt, men det ligger mycket i påståendet. Vi tittar gärna tillbaka på gamla tiders mode och livsstil för att hitta stoff till vår egen tillvaro. De färgglada skidoverallerna som bars av den klassiska slalomklubben Hökarängen i Sällskapsresan - Snowroller från 1985, börjar till exempel komma tillbaka ute i skidbackarna. Detta efter att under lång tid ha hängt längst bak i garderoben, som något att plocka fram vid maskeradfester eller studentskivor.
Brukare av dessa olika kosttillskott hävdar att de ger en omedelbar energiinjektion. De orkar mer under dagen, blir mer produktiva, och det tycks som att de inte heller behöver någon sömn. Vissa hävdar att de klarar sig på 4-5 timmar per natt, plus en 20 minuters power nap innan middagstid. Många börjar oftast med D-vitamin, märker direkt en effekt, och söker sig sedan tillbaka till hyllorna där vitaminerna finns. Där köper de varor för halva studiebidraget och börjar efter det varje morgon med att blanda en cocktail av alla möjliga preparat för att ge sig själva en god start på dagen. Allt blir bättre, de orkar mer; de kan löpträna och plugga tio gånger mer än förut, och varva detta med ett utökat socialt umgänge. Livet är bäst.
Apropå 80-talet tillägnade Historieätarna på SVT ett avsnitt åt det årtiondet. Mikrovågsugnsmat och uppkavlade kavajärmar blandades med rökning av gula Blend och jobb som aktiemäklare. Det stora fokuset, eller snarare idealet, låg enligt experterna som uttalade sig, på kroppen. Man skulle vara lång och smärt, och ha en V-formad kroppshydda; oavsett könstillhörighet. Även om många som läser detta förmodligen inte upplevde den tiden, eller har några skarpa minnen av den, kan alla säkert sätta sig in i hur det kan ha varit. Jag tänker till exempel på de tidstypiska träningsvideorna med aerobicsintruktörerna, som alltid vevas i bakgrunden på någon teveapparat i en filmscen om den tiden.
Sedan kommer kraschen. Vitaminerna som står på nattduksbordet förmår dem inte längre att ta sig ur sängen. Produktiviteten är nere på noll. Förklaringen heter placebo. Man tror att kosttillskotten har så mycket högre effekt än de verkligen har och därför får man en inbillad energi-high. Denna är dock kortvarig. Vitaminerna må ge en viss effekt, men sanningen är att kroppen endast klarar av att ta upp ca 20 procent av till exempel C-vitaminet i en sådan brustablett. Man måste varva detta vitaminintag med näringsriktig kost och annat sunt leverne. Träning och sömn; träning och sömn. Likt 5:2-metoden och LCHF-dieten måste vitamindieten tas an med sunt förnuft och inte ses som någon quick-fix.
I Historieätarna blir en av programledarna, Lotta Lundgren, serverad en måltidersättningsdryck istället för vanlig mat till middag. Denna chokladdryck liknar de hälsodrycker som idag finns till försäljning på de flesta välsorterade mataffärer och träningsanläggningar. Detta gjorde att jag började tänka på tiden vi lever i nu. Något av det trendigaste i Sverige 2015, är att prata om alla de kosttillskott man tar till vardags. I varje samtal är det någon som nämner hur otrolig deras dag har varit, tack vare de små pillren de stoppat i sig i samband med frukosten. För att upplysa de som inte vet, är de vanligaste sorterna av kosttillskott förmodligen C-vitamin, Omega-3, Magnesium- och järntabletter. Men framförallt domineras marknaden, hyllorna, och samtalen av

Energy Perspectives One question I am often asked when I tell people I am from the United States is, what is the biggest difference you have noticed so far between here and the States? I usually mention the biking, trains, and recycling, as these are what I noticed right away when I moved to Lund. It is not that I have never been exposed to these things, but that I come from a country that enables the endless use of energy, so I have never really had to think about them.
mense stretches of factories and power plants pumping both energy into the city and emissions into the air. It is a dismal sight; hence, it is located well outside the city. This is the image I have of energy in the United States: dirty and cheap. This image is a stark contrast to what I have noticed in Sweden. Here, energy makes me think windmills, biking, the eight different recycling receptacles in my dormitory’s kitchen, and the quick, efficient, and modern public transportation. I have never seen a Swedish gas station, and I when I think Swedish factory I think of that huge warehouse in Ikea where they keep the larger furniture pieces. Despite the Swedes’ complaining about the erratic train schedules, I still find them amazingly efficient and they serve as a quick mode of transportion.
I learned how to ride a bike when I was six-yearsold but my hometown was rather sprawled, so I relied on my parents and brothers to drive me around until I was sixteen and got my own car. I perceive distances in the hours it takes to drive to a destination rather than the actual mileage. I have only taken a train in the States about ten times in my life. My experience with recycling was limited to general recycling and garbage bins in my home, school, and in some public areas. As my time here progresses, I realize more and more that energy – through the human energy used to bike ourselves around Lund to the fuels used in transportation and everyday life – plays an immense role in the differences I have noticed in Sweden versus the United States.
Differences between the use and idea of the term energy are undoubtedly due to their histories and contexts within countries. However, as political bodies and international organizations enforce stricter regulations on energy use, I wonder if a country like the United States will begin to adopt habits and developments more similar to that of Sweden. Perhaps the United States’ recent commitments to cutting greenhouse gas emissions will in fact inspire businesses and communities to adopt better standards, develop public transportation, and rethink their energy use. One could only hope that these sorts of transitions would change the idea of energy into something that is no longer a dirty word, but more of a positive possibility for the future. For now, I will remain in awe of the Swedes’ energy habits (or lack thereof), as they go about their business with their fast trains, cycling, and recycling.
That is not to say that the United States does not care about limiting energy use or preserving resources for future generations to come. Rather, the connotations surrounding energy differ greatly between the two nations. When I think energy in the States, I think oil (and oil spills), gasoline (and gas subsidies – gas in my hometown costs the equivalent of 5 SEK per liter), and big energy companies such as Peabody Energy, which are known to financially support American politicians who routinely deny the existence of global warming. Lighting the World Maurits Groen is a social entrepreneur, passionate about sustainability. He has had a lot of experience with both independent work as well as consulting large organizations such as ABM-Amro Bank, Greenpeace, IBM, General Electric, the European Union and many others. The WakaWaka (shine bright in Swahili) is the Dutchman’s latest project. Mr. Groen’s guiding mission is to bring light to those who do not have access to electricity today; or in more quantitative terms, to bring electricity to the 1.2 billion people who currently lack access to an electricity grid. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Groen about his latest innovation and his chosen career path. How did you end up being a social entrepreneur and what motivates you to stay one? – The term social entrepreneur is actually quite strange, like our society would allow asocial entrepreneurs. As long as there are 1.2 billion people in the world who lack access to safe light and electricity, I am motivated to continue. The WakaWaka consists of a solar cell (small as a postcard), a battery, two LEDs and a USB-port for charging various devices. The result is a rechargeable energy source for the most necessary things in an area without electricity - a flashlight and charger. The innovation will be a life changer for many and has already affected the lives of half a billion. One of the WakaWaka’s main benefit is that it replaces the old kerosene lamps currently used in developing regions. The kerosene lamps are not only a fire hazard but also create fumes so toxic that each year four million people lose their life due to respiratory related illnesses. The old kerosene lamps also produce dim light where as the WakaWaka has bright LEDs which can light a room to comfortable reading and working light. It is used by school-children to extend reading and homework hours and by women to create manufactured goods. Both factors combined increase a family’s human capital and income, creating room for other investments and a better education. The WakaWaka project took off with a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter and help from the Clinton-Foundation. Highlights of

its development were the special country projects where the WakaWakas were used as crisis relief in Haiti, Syria, the Philippines, Mali, Liberia, and Indonesia. The latest project headlines were made by the Ebola action plan of WakaWaka, supporting health-personnel with light in the hospital tents.
The WakaWaka can be purchased in the developing world either by paying the subsidized price immediately or by purchasing a dormant unit for 5 USD. You can then activate your WakaWaka with prepaid cards lasting for a week each. These cards are sold at a price which is less than the fuel price for a week long use of a kerosene lamp. The WakaWaka automatically unlocks once you have completed the payment plan.
The idea of the product and its technical realization has not always been met with enthusiasm. Especially not by the technical staff who needed to certify the WakaWaka. It was sent back during the first evaluation, with a note saying there must be a technical error in the device. Maurits Groen and his crew tested it again but it seemed to be working. They asked the technical inspectors to specify the error they observed. The answer was surprising: The engineers of the testing-site did not believe that a few freaks designed a device with an efficiency of over 40 percent. A value that they had not even seen in their own laboratories. Needless to say, the device was allowed on the market shortly thereafter.
What is next for WakaWaka - further innovation of the existing products or do you need a new project to start? – We successfully finished the recent crowdfunding campaign for our newest product: the WakaWaka Base. A larger electric storage unit with solar panels and multiple USB-ports, as well as two bright LED lamps, kind of a power and light first-aid-kit. You can search for the campaign on Kickstarter. In the future we hope to develop other off-grid solutions like water purification, cooking stoves and other useful devices, accompanied by new business models that give people with the poorest living conditions access to clean and sustainable solutions.
The expected often comes with the unexpected. After successfully crowdfunding the first batch, the product gained popularity among camping enthusiasts in the developed world. From these profits, the WakaWakas get subsidized in the developing world. No unit will be given away for free though. It should always have a price tag and thus a value to the people who use it. The pride which comes with having saved for the product is very important. It is simply not a gift from the West, but a product especially designed for those who get the most value out of it.
The WakaWaka is a sustainable solution to the energy need and the need for safe light for over a billion people on our planet. It does not need a conventional energy grid, nor costly power plants. The energy is sourced sustainably at the location and energy losses on transport corridors are avoided. As of today, over 130 000 WakaWakas have been shipped, directly impacting over 600 000 people. Doing the math, this adds up to roughly 150 000 tons of CO2 saved per year and an additional 150 million hours of light.
How do the logistics behind WakaWaka work in less developed countries? – We work with several distribution models: Firstly, in relief situations like refugee camps in Syria and distribution in Ebola hit areas in West-Africa, we work with local partners, i.e. the International Rescue Committee, the Red Cross, and GIZ (German version of SIDA).
Finally, why should a student in Lund buy a WakaWaka? – It is a great gadget when you like the outdoors, traveling, going on festivals, and such. You are able to source your own clean and sustainable energy, wherever you are. And, of course, with your purchase, through our buy one = give one model, you help somebody else.
Secondly, we set up our own distribution system in Rwanda, where we have our own team. Thirdly, we use local NGO:s which set up health and/ or education programmes, for example primary schools (Mwamtsefu School in Kenya, Dogon Women, Mali). You can actually check the different locations on our online impact map.
WakaWaka just needed an idea and some crazy people to realize it. Inspirational leaders like Maurits Groen can make a change for many. And here at Lund University we surely have some of the next change makers of the future. So lighten up

Teknisk utveckling Energi är något som kan lagras, överföras och medföra rörelse. Energi är nyckeln till allt liv. När man siar om framtiden, måste man beakta historien. Människan har, under sin korta livstid på jorden, strävat efter effektivitet i sin energianvändning, energiutveckling och energiförbrukning. telefoner, TV-apparater och datorer mer energieffektiva än vad de idag är med kiselplattor. Av grafen skulle man till exempel kunna skapa en dator som är lika tunn som ett papper och som går att rulla ihop och lägga i handväskan.
Idag lever vi kvar i den industriella revolutionens skugga. En del hävdar att vi på 2000-talet, tack vare den digitala revolutionen, gått in i ett nytt skede av teknisk evolution. Till följd av underlättad kommunikation har många innovationer sett dagens ljus. Och den tekniska utvecklingen är snabb. En del påstår att den till och med är för snabb, och att dess hastighet kommer att ligga till grund för jordens potentiellt kommande ragnarök. Men jag skulle vilja vända på den generellt negativa framtidsbild som vi idag besitter och ställa frågan: Är den tekniska evolutionen för långsam?
Grafen kan också användas som ett skyddande och bevarande material. Om man bara blandar in blott en bråkdels promille grafen med ett annat material ökar det materialets tålighet för värme med upp till 30 grader. Alltså, ifall vi börjar blanda grafen med till exempel byggnadsmaterialet betong, blir detta material än mer tåligt mot väder och vind. Att bygga hållbara och långsiktiga byggnader i framtiden skulle dessutom vara miljömässigt gynnsamt. Om man vill föreviga äldre hus, kan man skydda dem med grafen. Grafen är ändå genomskinligt och skulle inte förstöra de gamla fasadernas värdefulla yttre. Detta kan man även göra med kända konstverk som man vill bevara.
Det finns en möjlig bättre framtid med dagens tillgängliga material. Tyvärr stoppas den tekniska utvecklingen av ekonomiska och normbaserade faktorer. Idéerna kommer fram fortare än vad samhället klarar av. Ny elektronik tar tid att lära sig, och innan man lärt sig kommer något ännu nyare. Jag vill påstå att framtiden inte är på väg mot en slukande undergång utan istället på väg mot en blommande begynnelse. Vårt digitala imperium har ännu inte nått sin kulmen. Dagens mängd av teknik kommer att arta sig och bli till fördel för det mänskliga släktets överlevnad.
Man kan också tillverka bilar, flygplan och båtar med grafen, så att dessa inte slits lika aggressivt. Ett skikt grafen tål hela 14 ton tryck. Man skulle även kunna blanda i grafen i nylagt väglag. Då skulle miljön ännu en gång få en stor börda lyft från hennes axlar. Eventuellt kan man använda grafen som solceller, vilket hade löst många energiproblem i framtiden. Då hade fasaden på byggnader kunnat fungera som en oändlig energikälla, istället för till exempel kärnkraft vars radioaktiva avfall man måste gömma undan. Användningsområden för grafen är dock inte helt utrönade, det gäller bara att vi satsar på materialet.
Grafen År 2010 nobelprisbelönades Andre Geim och Konstantin Novoselov i fysik för deras utveckling av det befintliga materialet kol; grafen. Grafen är gjord av förtunnad kolstruktur, ämnet som ligger till grund för allt liv. Det är det tunnaste och starkaste materialet som någonsin har skapats. Grafen leder elektricitet 100 gånger snabbare än kisel och det leder också värme bättre än alla andra material som hitintills upptäckts. Grafen är nästan helt genomskinligt och har en täthet som inte ens den minsta gasatomen kommer igenom.
Elbilen Elmotorn har, i sig, alltid varit mer effektiv än motorer drivna på oljebaserade bränslen och enligt somliga kommer elbilen inom en snar framtid att ta över bilmarknaden. Elbilen Tesla Roadsters räckvidd är idag cirka 40 mil, vilket är mer än nog för den genomsnittliga svenskens 4 mil om
Materialet har stora förutsättningar att förbättra människans och miljöns framtid på jorden. Grafens ledningsförmåga förväntas göra dagens transistorer ännu snabbare. Kanske blir då mobil-

dagen. Svensken har, med sin elbil, hela 36 mil tillgodo när dagen går mot sitt slut. Laddningsproblemet, cirka 6-8 timmar för fullt batteri, är alltså egentligen inget större problem, eftersom man laddar bilen hemma i garaget. Att bila genom Europa är inte heller ett problem då det, liksom i Sverige, finns fler än tillräckligt med snabbladdningsstationer, vilka enbart kräver 20-30 minuters laddning för fullt batteri. Dock sliter en sådan snabbladdningsprocess på batteriets totala livslängd, men ack inte mycket.
Yamanaka tilldelades nobelpriset i fysiologi och medicin år 2012. Deras upptäckt var att mogna, specialiserade celler kan omprogrammeras till omogna celler som i sin tur kan utvecklas till kroppens alla vävnader. Alltså är det möjligt att ta celler från en människa och ombilda dessa till stamceller som således eventuellt kan alstras till nya mänskliga funktionella organ. Den här banbrytande upptäckten har ändrat många skolböckers information om mänskliga celler, då man tidigare trodde att mogna celler var irreversibla. Genom att man i dagens läge kan omprogrammera en människas celler ger det stora möjligheter att närmare studera ärftliga sjukdomar, sjukdomsförlopp, metoder inom diagnostik och behandling av transplantationer. Shinya Yamanaka lyckades exempelvis skapa en fungerande lever till en mus. Ännu har man inte lyckats göra detta med en människa, men man är på god väg och snart lär forskarna lyckas med detta.
Idag finns det tyvärr en ekonomisk spärr för svensken och även en psykisk räckvidds-spärr för att köpa ett eldrivet fordon. Trots detta ser det ljust ut för elbilen! Fördelar med elbilen kommer framförallt att vara elimineringen av utsläpp och således kommer luften att bli betydligt renare. Också ljudförhållandena i städerna kommer radikalt minskas då elmotorer är betydligt tystare än oljebaserade motorer. Dessutom är elbilen avsevärt mycket snyggare än de flesta nya bilmodeller på marknaden.
Enligt Aubrey de Grey, en av de mest kontroversiella rösterna inom detta forskningsfält, är åldrandet en process av ackumulerade skador. Var och en av dessa skador kan åtgärdas med regenerativ medicin, vilket alltså innebär att den sjuka eller skadade komponenten ersätts med en ny – en cell eller en vävnad. Om detta stämmer finns det alltså en chans att vi inom ett par årtionden kommer kunna förnya oss själva och stoppa åldrandet med hjälp av våra egna celler.

- Det är barnsligt. Den mänskliga kroppen är en maskin som innehar en mängd olika funktioner och som med tiden ackumulerar olika typer av slitage och skador. Men dessa kan repareras löpande. Det är precis samma sak som med veteranbilar. Allt handlar om att vara uppmärksam. Läkarvetenskapen bygger på att experimentera med det som till en början verkar oundvikligt tills dess att man finner en lösning.

Många är kritiska till de Greys uttalande om att människokroppen fungerar som en veteranbil som ständigt kan lagas på en verkstad för att fungera och se bra ut. Alla tror inte att vi kan få evigt liv, men det är praktiskt möjligt att få ett betydligt längre liv och också behålla ett ungdomligt utseende med hjälp av våra celler. Rent teoretiskt kan vi även finna ett botemedel på alla sjukdomar som existerar, trots att det ständigt uppstår nya sjukdomar och mutationer av de gamla.

Kanske kan vi till och med ersätta våra kroppar i framtiden med maskiner som konstant förnyar våra celler. Men hitintills är maskinkroppar science fiction.

Artificiellt kött Mark Post, vid universitetet Maastricht i Nederländerna, lyckades redan 2013 odla fram den första artificiella hamburgaren. - Kött är muskler. Stamcellstekniken är mycket bra när det gäller att odla kött. Det behövs så lite för att framställa muskler. De få cellerna vi tar från kon kan bli tio ton kött. Idag kan man med hjälp av Posts teknik ta fram artificiellt rött kött, kyckling och fisk. Att med hjälp av artificiellt kött slippa dagens skogsskövling för de gigantiska boskapsuppfödningarna skulle inte bara hjälpa många djur utan också miljön. I nuläget smakar det artificiella köttet inte lika gott som det naturliga, då det saknar fett. Men inom en snar framtid hävdar Post att de kommer att ha funnit en lösning på det så kallade fettdilemmat. Framtiden ser alltså väldigt ljus ut, trots det ständigt påminnande klimathotet och sjukdomshotet. Det finns såklart betydligt fler material än de ovannämnda som kan underlätta vår framtidstillvaro. Det finns så många fler möjligheter än omöjligheter i den tekniska evolutionen. Kanske måste vi människor bli mer öppna och mer optimistiska än vad vi är idag. Vi är troligen på väg in i ett nytt vetenskapligt paradigm.

Lazy Sundays Some days, you do not feel energized. Some days, you wake up after a big night out and there is simply no way you will get any productive work done. On those days, it might be for the best to just let it go and indulge yourself in some easy-going film.

Holding the fifth place on our list is basically any Disney, cartoon, or animated movie. They are easy to grasp and there are no mind boggling twists one needs to get their head around.

Fourth place goes to Napoleon Dynamite, a sweet film about an all around nice guy, doing nice things, wearing t-shirts and trying to avoid trouble. It is very pleasant and amusing, perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Superbad is also a great movie, not only when feeling blue, but generally. Even though it is quite immature and has aged quite poorly, there are some quotable lines and hilarious Jonah Hill-moments.

The second place goes to a film written by the even more hilarious Dave Chappelle; Half Baked. In some cliques considered a cult classic, it also boasts some ingenious dialogue and memorable scenes. All in all a funny flick, demanding little brain activity.

And the top place goes to a film that not only accepts the notion of doing nothing, but glorifies it, makes it sound like the only reasonable thing to do. Office Space is sort of the lazy man’s revenge on the ambitious. It turns clichÊd office small talk and sad Monday-depressions into an arena for hilarious comedic relief.

Med läckan som vapen upprör och utmanar de samhällets makthavare. Wikileaks: en organisation som har fått en hel värld att hålla andan. År 2006 visste ingen att det som startades av en grupp frivilliga aktivister och kom att kallas Wikileaks, fyra år senare skulle ha publicerat fler hemligstämplade dokument än den samlade världspressen. Organisationen sägs vara ett globalt projekt, uppstartad av dissidenter, matematiker och journalister. Det namn som flitigast förekommer i media när man diskuterar Wikileaks är emellertid Julian Assange. Assange är sajtens officiella representant och omnämns många gånger som dess grundare och chefredaktör. Wikileaks är en produkt av vår tid, en tid då transparens har blivit allt mer central. Under 2000-talet har vi i Sverige bland annat fått se inskrivningen av FRA-lagen i lagboken, vilken ska ge staten en bättre översikt över huruvida medborgarna har rent mjöl i påsen. Staten förespråkar transparens men är själv inte redo att leva som den lär. Det är i detta sammanhang som Wikileaks slogan ”we open governments” kan förstås. I vår digitaliserade värld har Wikileaks gett civilkurage ett nytt ansikte då de erbjuder en plattform där information kan spridas utan att röja läckans identitet. Dokumenten som gjort Wikileaks hyllade och hatade världen över kommer alla från så kallade ”Whistleblowers”: anonyma källor i samhället vars mål är att bringa ljus över hemligstämplat material som makthavarna vill hålla bakom lykta dörrar.
En obekväm sanning På Wikileaks hemsida beskriver man organisationen som en icke vinstdrivande mediaorganisation, vilken lever på donationer ifrån privatpersoner. Men många ser en fara för den internationella maktbalansen bakom dess fasad. När de stora kreditkortsföretagen såsom Visa, Mastercard och Paypal i december förra året valde att stoppa betalningsflödet till sajten hotades därmed dess existens. Det har spekulerats i huruvida amerikanska påtryckningar hade ett finger med i spelet men bankerna hävdar att Wikileaks har brutit mot reglerna genom att publicera hemligstämplat material. Oavsett anledning kan det konstateras att ett sådant beslut sätter käppar i hjulet för verksamheten. Läckandet av kontro-

Mer än en man
versiella dokument har dessutom lett till att sajten har attackerats upprepade gånger. För att värja sig från attackerna har Wikileaks upprättat över 1400 kopior av hemsidan, så kallade speglar, vilka ska göra det omöjligt att helt stänga ner den.
Wikileaks hade nu fått det stora genombrott som man hade väntat på. Det dröjde dock inte länge förrän bakslaget kom. I augusti 2010 rapporterade världspressen om att Julian Assange är misstänkt för ofredande och våldtäkt i Sverige. Brottsutredningen pågår fortfarande och världen verkar vara oense om huruvida Assange är en hjälte eller skurk. Förespråkarna för Wikileaks menar att anklagelserna är en sammansvärjning för att svartmåla organisationen, medan kritikerna hävdar att Assange har blivit en av dem han ville bekämpa. Blåsvädret har satt Wikileaks egentliga mål i skymundan. Bortom diskussionen om Assanges vara eller icke vara, finns nämligen fortfarande organisationen som säger sig kämpa för det fria ordet. I oktober 2010 får Wikileaks sitt nästa stora genombrott som återigen ska komma att skapa stora rubriker. Läckan, som sägs vara den i särklass största i USA:s historia, klassificerades av Pentagon som ett hot mot den nationella säkerheten. Den kallas Iraq War Logs och innehåller 400 000 dokument från Irakkriget. Avslöjanden handlar bland annat om hur den amerikanska regeringen skall ha ignorerat rapporter om tortyr, samt att antalet dödsoffer är betydligt högre än man tidigare gått ut med. Snart därefter uppdagas läckan Cabelgate (som anspelar på Watergateskandalen under 1970-talet). Detta är den stora diplomatläckan som har fått regeringar runt om i världen att yttra sig mycket skeptiskt till Wikileaks. Totalt 250 000 ambassadmeddelanden varav nästan 100 000 är hemligstämplade och 28 000 behandlar terrorism har offentliggjorts. Det handlar bland annat om regeringsledare som uppmanar USA att gå till angrepp mot Irak, om korruption Afghanistan samt om diplomaters privata uttalanden om ett flertal länders makthavare. Wikileaks har nu världens ögon riktade mot sig – frågan är vad vi kommer att få skåda härnäst.
Många inflytelserika personer har dessutom ifrågasatt Wikileaks rätt att existera. Mest kritiska är landet på andra sidan Atlanten, vilka har drabbats hårdast av de läckta dokumenten. Pentagon har exempelvis klassificerat Wikileaks verksamhet som ett hot mot den nationella säkerheten, och frågan är om öppenhet alltid är av godo. Kritik mot Wikileaks har dessutom berört verifikationen av det material som publiceras. Än så länge har dock allt läckt material visat sig vara sanningsenligt och därmed bör kanske Wikileaks frias från denna anklagelse till dess att motsatsen har bevisats. För även om motståndarna till Wikileaks är många, finns säkerligen lika många förespråkare. Reuters rapporterade exempelvis i februari detta år att Wikileaks har blivit nominerade till årets fredspris för deras kamp för just yttrandefrihet och transparens, samt för deras avslöjande om krigsbrott. Idag är Wikileaks en välkänd organisation världen över och redan 2007 avslöjades en av de första läckorna. Då var det Kenyas förra president Daniel arap Moi som befann sig i Wikileaks strålkastarljus. Sedan dess har avslöjandena duggat tätt och världen har fått skåda läckor rörande alltifrån instruktionsmanualer från fånglägret Guantánamo Bay till radikala avslöjanden om den isländska banken Kaupthing. . Men det som satte Wikileaks på världskartan en gång för alla publicerades inte förrän i april 2010. Collateral Murder är en video som har skakat en hel värld. Den visar hur amerikanska soldater, från en helikopter, skjuter ner ett antal civilpersoner i Irak. Bradley Manning är mannen som sägs ligga bakom läckan. Denne tjänstgjorde som underrättelseanalytiker i Bagdad när han greps i maj 2010 misstänkt för att ha spridit en stor mängd hemligstämplade dokument.
Det som började 2006 har ännu inte tagit slut. Debatten kring organisationens rätt att existera, om Julian Assange som våldtäktsman, maktgalen ledare eller helt enkelt en 2000-talets hjälte pågår fortfarande. Men världen är varken svart eller vit, och så är inte heller Wikileaks. Frågan är om världen är redo för Wikileaks. Är vi redo att se sanningen i vitögat? Oavsett vad man tycker om organisationen och personerna bakom den är den en maktfaktor att räkna med. Wikileaks upprör och berör. Välkommen till generation truth!

If we go back, say, 40-50 years, business life, meaning behaviour, inter-personal relations, structure, status and more, was slightly different compared to today. Think Mad Men, for example, not entirely unrealistic, where work appears to entail hard liquor at 10AM and onwards, chainsmoking, abusing subordinates and secretaries, wet lunches and dinners, mistresses, and, naturally, private life at rock bottom. All centred upon white men (which has perhaps not changed that much), highly privileged in this context. At the same time, creativity and hard work, in a postWW2, modernist era of sustained progress and quality of life development. The sky was the limit, and for some, these were great times.
find people in the bar till the morning, they will either be at the gym or enjoying a good night’s sleep – det är en dag imorgon också! It is not unthinkable anymore that bosses start management team meetings by taking the group out for a jog. And anyone who walks down, say, Skeppsbron in Stockholm in the morning rush hour, will enjoy a shining bike parade of hugely expensive middle management mamil from the southern suburbs, burning calories on their way to work. So, the times they are a-changin’, and this is probably all good. But I cannot help but wonder if Don Draper would be as good an ad man if he was stripped of his drink and smoke, sat on a gaudy racing bike, wearing lycra and a silly helmet.
But they definitely were not healthy. Nor were the lifestyles or attitudes sustainable. A Mad Men kind of lifestyle will either kill you by cardiac arrest or drive society to reject you and your dinosaur values in this day and age. The 70s came and old structures began to crumble. Norms and ways of living, including work life, were challenged and ultimately, albeit slowly, things changed.

A colleague of mine, Nathan at Columbia, does research on work-life balance, and now observes how the young potential Wall Street recruits prefer to go to California instead of the Big Apple. They relinquish the money, and will rather work for a tech startup in Silicon Valley, in a much more financially uncertain environment. And this is not just because we are in a tech bubble at the moment and they are hoping to do IPO soon. It is partly because they are less interested in a Wall Street job, including tight schedules and stress, but also because a hectic life on Manhattan is managable by few for an entire career. It makes perfect sense for the brokers to do a lot of coke! says Nate. So they go west and take on a much more quiet and healthy Californian lifestyle: lovely weather, sweet people, perfect teeth and tan, agreeable working hours, light sushi, early evenings, time for hobbies, and perhaps the odd glass of frictionless chardonnay at sunset. And sport. Which features heavily globally, and in Sweden too, and of course is reflected in business life. A middle manager, or anyone striving upwards, who does not have an expensive bike or a plan for a Swedish Classic, is in dire straits. If you attend the average conference today, you will not

– I wanted to fill my student life with as much experience as I could possibly get. My goal was to be able to say that I had not missed out on anything during my university years, that I had done everything there was to do in Lund. I believe I managed to do so. I was very involved in the nation life, but it was most definitely LundaEkonomerna who stole my heart. So my advice to you current students in Lund would be to make the most out of your student experience and get involved in LundaEkonomerna. You will not regret a single second.
What is your favorite memory from LundaEkonomerna?
How do you feel, looking back at your time with LundaEkonomerna?
– This question is almost impossible for me to answer, since I have so many awesome memories from the union. But if I have to choose only one, I would have to say Vinterbalen 2013. I was at that time working as a board member and had seen how hard the committee of Vinterbalen worked in order to break new records and create such a magical and successful night that it turned out to be.
– Looking back, I can honestly say that LundaEkonomerna is what made my years as a student so incredibly great. I could never have imagined how rewarding it would be to get involved in the union, both from a professional and personal point of view. I learned new skills and I developed tremendously as a person. Believe that is what has taken me to where I am today. Involvement is highly appreciated by employers, so it is truly great that you can add some extra spice to your resumé while having the time of your life.
But all in all, I have countless great memories from LE. So my last words to you all will be, please continue to create great memories within the Union and make the most out of your time in Lund!
What do you do now? – After having graduated from Lund six months ago, I now work as a market analyst in the heart of the financial district in London. I am responsible for the Scandinavian markets, mainly within Beauty and FMCG, where I analyze market sizes, shares and key players in order to make trend reports and forecasts.

Beppu, Japan ferry, giving us more time in the city once we arrived the following morning. Now, a ferry ride might not be that big of a deal back in Sweden, you get on the ferry, sit down, and wait until you have arrived at your destination. But the night ferry here in Japan is one of the most fascinating experiences I have ever had. The group rooms we were to sleep in had mattresses and pillows on the floor in perfect symmetry. Everyone had their own little space to put their luggage, and a blanket for when you gwent to sleep. My friends and I decided to dump all our bags on our beds (after taking off our shoes, naturally) before heading out to see what food they had to offer for our evening meal. But the Japanese women were not satisfied with just leaving their things, they actually unpacked and hung up the clothes they were to wear the following day, even if we were only going to be on the ferry for one night. Everything they do is so systematic and organized, as if it were in their DNA to keep track of everything.
As I am writing this report I am sitting in the library of Ritsumeikan APU, the university where I am currently on exchange. Located on the top of a mountain, I can see the change of the seasons in all its glory. Japan, and Beppu, is beautiful. The culture and way of living stretches far beyond sushi and perplexing vending machines. Rather, it is the details of everyday life which makes Japan so fascinating. The first observation I made in Japan was that rules and following the law is an essential part of the Japanese lifestyle. You will definitely not be comfortable in the strictness of this law-abiding country if you go by the motto that rules are meant to be broken. I have barely seen any locals cross the road during a red light. They take off their shoes every single time they enter their home. They even take them off when it is just to quickly grab their keys. I guess you can say that these rules have more of a social aspect to them if anything. If you do not follow them, you will be stared at intensely.
The following day we were awoken by music at 5:00 in the morning. I still have the song stuck in my head because it was on repeat the whole morning. It never seemed to stop. Wherever you go in Japan there is music and melodies. When you go shopping, the stores always have the same
At the beginning of my exchange semester I went on a trip to Osaka, the third largest city in Japan, with a couple of newly made friends. The transportation mode we had decided on was a night

song on repeat (especially in the grocery stores), when you cross the road, the intersections all play different types of melodies. There is no way to escape it. The only place where the Japanese do not play music is in the elevators. Out of all places they chose the elevators! I must say I feel a little uncomfortable riding them, as if all of a sudden an Asian child in the likes of the Grudge will jump out from the ceiling and attack me. Elevators definitely need music.
and you get points for raising your hand and answering questions; no matter how completely unintelligent your answers might be. Believe me, I have suffered though many I cannot believe he/she just said that-moments. At APU the teachers are always right and if you do not do it exactly the way they want it to be done, you might as well leave because they will certainly not change their mind. So maybe the university does not have the level of education I am used to. But I am still greatly enjoying my time here because these new experiences have definitely made me grow as a person. This probably sounds clichĂŠ to many of you, but living in a completely different culture where your daily routines differ to those at home, opens your eyes to the world in a completely different way. It is the details in the daily life that will stick with you forever. If you are ever planning on going abroad on an exchange semester I can strongly recommend you to travel to some place that is very dissimilar to Sweden. You will not regret it.
Even if you feel like you are getting many new eye-opening experiences here in Japan, there is one thing that takes you back multiple school years: the education at Ritsumeikan APU. The course names sparkle with depth and sophistication, but the way they are taught is very similar to that of middle school. Dare. Believe. Achieve. Har du aldrig varit på Ekonomicentrum under eee-dagarna tidigare kommer du den 18e & 19e februari mötas av något helt annat än vad du är van vid. eee-dagarna är Lundaekonomernas största projekt och erbjuder Ekonomihögskolans elever en unik chans att nätverka och interagera med cirka 70 företag, både internationella och svenska. LundaEkonomernas arbetsmarknadsdagar (EfsilEkonomernas Ekonomdagar) ger oss studenter en otrolig möjlighet att träffa våra framtida arbetsgivare. Stora globala företag som H&M, Bloomberg, The Absolut Company och Coca Cola är bara en liten skara attraktiva företag du kan lära känna. Vad som skiljer årets eee-dagar från förra årets är eeeBoost, ett event innan mässan där eleverna har en chans att förbereda sig och få värdefulla tips. Under eventet kommer det att ges handfasta tips på hur man säljer sig själv och går från mässa till jobb. Utöver att Ekonomicentrum förvandlas totalt kommer det även att erbjudas inspirerande talare och karriärssamtal. Ett hett tips är att vara ute i god tid, då karriärssamtalen varit omåttligt populära tidigare år!
Jag fick en pratstund på Skånis tillsammans med Filip Bengtsson, eee-dagarnas president, för att få lite tips och trix från en rutinerad mässminglare. - Först och främst rekommenderar jag att man kommer väl förberedd till mässan. Det vill säga, läs på om de företag du är intresserad av och arbeta på hur du säljer dig själv. Medverka också även på eeeBoost, karriärssamtalen, eeeConnect samt de inspirerande föreläsningarna. Du måste tro på dig själv och våga kliva utanför din trygghetszon! Jag fick mitt första sommarjobb till följd av den kontakten som skapades via mässan. Dare. Believe. Achieve. är därför årets tema och genomsyrar hela arbetet runt och med mässan. Inför årets arbetsmarknadsmässa var söktrycket rekordhögt och man har anlitat ett fantastiskt gäng om 147 staffare, som sammanlagt blir 180

inklusive kommittén och deras adepter. Under terminens gång har man haft veckovisa möten samt åkt runt och besökt andra universitets arbetsmarknadsdagar för att finna inspiration, och inspiration har de funnit. Filip lovar att Pytten, avslutet på dessa fantastiska dagar, kommer att bli oförglömlig och bjuda på grymma artister.
Vad händer från idag? – I januari kör vi igång i full fart med ett informationsmöte med staffarna och förbereder dem på vad som komma skall. Det väntas många långa nätter här på Skånis och hela teamet är så taggade på att skapa två fantastiska dagar. Alla i kommittén brinner för vad de gör och vi har blivit ett otroligt sammansvetsat team vilket gör arbetet mycket roligare!
Hur skiljer ni er då från andra arbetsmarknadsmässor?
Kommer du också att gå runt och mingla och nätverka under mässan?
– Vi har en stor spridning bland företagen, både internationella och svenska, och vi arbetar stenhårt för att våra besökare ska uppleva de bästa eee-dagarna i historien. Vårt tankesätt är att erbjuda den bästa mässupplevelsen för ekonomistudenter och vi hoppas att de som besöker oss kommer att inse möjligheterna som finns att utvinna här. Mässan hålls under två dagar, men vi har även ett långsiktigt tänk. Vi hoppas ge stunderna möjlighet till långvariga relationer med företagen de möter och vi riktar oss därför inte enbart till masteroch kandidatstudenter, utan även till dem som är på sin första och andra termin ska ha möjlighet att i ett tidigt stadie träffa företag och skapa relationer med dem. Börjar man tidigt kommer man att vara en expert på att nätverka och skapa relationer med företag då du tar en examen.
– Absolut, jag kommer definitivt att ta tillvara på möjligheten att nätverka och skapa kontakter med nya företag. Eee-dagarna är en unik chans alla studenter på ekonomihögskolan bör ta tillvara på! Nedräkningen har börjat och snart väntar 70 företag på att få träffa just dig! Attending university is for many a natural way to prepare yourself for the future. But the future has historically been hard to predict. Who from the early 2000s would have guessed that almost every person today would walk around with a smartphone in their pocket, more powerful than most computers were back then?
Welcome back after, what I think was, a longawaited winter break. After all these years it feels as though Swedes should be accustomed to the long and dark fall semester with a considerable lack of sunlight and vitamin D. However, it always seems as though we are just as excited for the Christmas vacation and the eventually brighter times it brings.
This is interesting in both an individual as well as a business perspective. Take Kodak for instance. They were one of the biggest manufacturers of cameras back in the day, but have struggled lately as they were not adapting fast enough when digital cameras became the new hot thing. As an individual, how do you make sure to keep yourself relevant in order to be able to keep a job? There have been reports indicating that as many as 40 percent of today’s jobs might disappear due to automatization and robotics. Google are for example working with autonomous cars while decision support systems are in some cases able to provide information and tasks that traditionally have come from a supervisor.
The darkest days of the year have now passed and for each week we get to enjoy a few more minutes of daylight. However, there is still some time left until the spring sun starts to shine and the parks and squares around Lund fill up with students. To enjoy your time in Lund, even in the absence of the sun, with studies, engagement and extra work, it is important to surround yourself with people who contribute to your energy. You have probably been in situations where you need to collaborate with people who are very different from you. Most of the times it turns out to be interesting and evolving. However, sometimes you feel that a person close to you steals more energy than they give and then it is no longer worth your time. Life is too short to put energy into someone who does not give you any energy in return.
The conclusion I draw from this is the importance of being able to adapt. To me, being agile and working flexibly is a balance between long term planning and short term handling. You cannot set a carefully detailed plan for a 10 year period in advance just as you cannot wake up everyday without knowing what will happen next. But staying in that right balance is not easy.
LundaEkonomerna is an organization filled with people with so much energy that it flows over to the people around them. I am fortunate to get a daily LE-energy boost with creativity, engagement, and dedication from our active members each morning when I step into SkĂĽnis. And that, I am very thankful for.
One way to do it is to always question the obvious and evaluate how and especially why things are done. And that is, according to me, maybe the strongest trait of the Swedish universities. So for all students (and everyone else really), remember to always sharpen your critical thinking so that you can maintain a balance between doing right things and doing things right.
Knowing how necessary it is to be surrounded by people who share positive energy is something I will take with me in the future and hopefully I will be as spoilt then as I am today.

”Du tvingas utmana dig själv” Sofia Zandén Civilekonomprogrammet, Lunds universitet Sofia deltog i Global Internship Program sommaren 2014 och tillbringade fyra veckor på Deloittes kontor i Boston, USA.
Hur upplevde du Global Internship Program? Jag hade så himla roligt i Boston – både på jobbet och fritiden! Vi var omkring 40 interns där samtidigt och Deloitte ordnade olika evenemang där vi fick möjlighet att umgås och upptäcka staden. Något som överraskade mig var den informella stämningen på kontoret. Mitt team inkluderade mig från start och jag kände mig snabbt som en del i gänget. Jag hade också en så kallad buddy som hörde av sig nästan varje dag för att kolla läget. Generellt flöt allting på väldigt bra. När jag kom till flygplatsen blev jag upphämtad och skjutsad till boendet som Deloitte ordnat. Jag och en tjej från Madrid delade en jättefin lägenhet i hamnen där vi hade varsitt rum med badrum och walk in closet, så det var jättelyxigt. Enda minus var ansökningsprocessen kring visumet, som kändes rätt besvärlig.
Vad arbetade du med under ditt internship? Jag placerades i ett team på fyra personer som hade hand om benefit plans på ett stort finansbolag. Det var ganska komplicerat att sätta sig in i USA:s pensionssystem, men jag fick bra stöd. Jag fick hjälpa till att hantera bekräftelser, föra in information i datasystem, bekräfta värdering av fonder och massa annat. Alla i mitt team var måna om att jag skulle få intressanta uppgifter.
Uppfyllde internshipet och Deloitte dina förväntningar? Utan tvekan. Alla jag träffade var väldigt tillmötesgående, vilket är samma känsla jag fått av Deloitte i Sverige. Jag blev riktigt sugen på en framtida karriär inom Deloitte – och till hösten börjar jag som reviorsassistent på Deloitte i Stockholm. För min del var det också oerhört utvecklande att tvingas utmana sig själv som man gör under en utlandsvistelse. Jag rekommenderar alla som är nyfikna på Deloitte att söka!
