MILLS NORRIE STATE PARK AND STAATSBURGH STATE HISTORIC SITE, HOME TO MILLS MANSION

With its rolling landscape and majestic views, the park has been treasured by locals and sightseers for over 300 years, and among its outdoor attractions are hiking, fishing, and picnicking; the winter months offer sledding and cross-country skiing. The many special events that take place here include the Music in the Park summer concert series and the ornate Christmas decoration of the mansion during the holiday season. Also of interest to families is the environmental museum, which houses local plant displays and sponsors educational summer programs on astronomy, botany, and birds. The park is open daily; mansion hours vary seasonally.

POET’S WALK PARK

Legend has it that Irving came up with the idea for “Rip Van Winkle” here while gazing at the distant but very prominent Catskill Mountains, site of his protagonist’s decadeslong sleep.

Ferncliff Forest

Rhinebeck’s number one free attraction offers an amazing view of Hudson Valley from our Observation Tower. Enjoy hiking, picnics, camping or just walk your dog in our wonderful 200-acre Forest Preserve.

SOUTHLANDS FOUNDATION

The foundation is best known for its long-established horsemanship school and boarding facility, including a summer riding school and access to miles of trails. However, the extensive grounds are open to the public year-round for walking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. Special events include bird watching and a popular spring community day featuring an Easter egg hunt.
