WBPD dons pink badges for Breast Cancer Awareness Month Local resident makes donation to benevolent association to fund badges after passing Association seeks to raise at least $5,000 for fund at Officers’ Ball on Nov. 2 By Terry Lane Staff Writer

Wrightsville Beach police officers will be honoring a longtime local resident while also making a fashion statement this month when officers sport new pink colored badges to help raise awareness for breast cancer testing. The new badges, which officers will be wearing through this October and in future years, were purchased through a donation to the Wrightsville Beach Police Department’s Recreational and Benevolent Association by Harold Laing, a longtime Wrightsville Beach resident who died at age 84 last month. Laing told officers he wanted to make the donation to the fund to purchase the badges to honor his wife Kathy’s fight against breast cancer. Laing, who died on Sept. 29, is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Katharine Gunster Laing, whose cancer is in remission. “Breast cancer has been prevalent in our family,” said Laing’s daughter, Beverly Laing Andersson. “It meant a lot for him to do something.” The donation will help support the memory and legacy of Harold Laing, who spent more than five decades

Laing grew up in a home on East Atlanta Street that was built in 1934. Later, the family moved to a house on Heron Street. Laing graduated from New Hanover High School, earned three degrees from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy for 22 years in both active and reserve duty. Laing was also known for the garden’s he would maintain on his properties. Laing’s donation comes as the Wrightsville Beach Police Department’s Recreational and Benevolent Association prepares for the 41st annual Police Officers’ Ball, which is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Holiday Inn. Fundraiser for Hurricane Dorian

Wrightsville Beach-based Port City Proud is raising money to help the Outer Banks community of Ocracoke, which was hit hard by September’s Hurricane Dorian. Port City Proud is hosting a wing cooking contest this Saturday at the Triangle Lounge to raise money to help the storm stricken area. The organizers of Port City Proud, which worked for months after Hurricane Florence clearing debris for free for their neighbors, have traveled to Ocracoke to assess damage and provide assistance. More than 500 cars were declared totaled from the flooding, and more than 400 houses still don’t have power, she said. To help Ocracoke, Port City Proud is seeking a variety of donations, with gift cards and tools being a priority. Gift cards of any type can be left at Jimmy’s Wrightsville Beach at 5 N. Lumina Ave. Donations can be made through the organization’s GoFundMe page at gofundme.com/port-city-proud or through contacting the owners at Facebook. com/portcityproud.nc or Instagram.com/port.city.proud.

buffet dinner, live music and a wide range of raffle items. The ball raises approximately $5,000 for the benevolent association’s fund each year. Sponsorships ranging from $250 to $2,500 are also still available. Wrightsville Beach Police Department’s Recreational and Benevolent Association administrator Cpl. Gunnar Matthews said that the fund provides support to local officers in a variety of ways. He said the fund was used to help support officers in New Hanover County after Hurricane Florence. The fund was used this year to help a Wrightsville Beach police officer to attend the funeral service of a relative, Matthews said. The fund has also been used to purchase gifts for Christmas gift drives for local disadvantaged youth. Governor Cooper Announces Creation of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Film, Television and Digital Streaming On Tuesday, Governor Roy Cooper announced the creation of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Film, Television and Digital Streaming, which will lead efforts to continue growing North Carolina’s successful film industry. Governor Cooper signed Executive Order 111 to create the council at Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was joined by Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Secretary and Council Chair Susi Hamilton, Screen Gems Executive Vice President Bill Vassar, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo, newly named members of the film council, and local individuals employed in the film industry. “North Carolina’s natural beauty, welcoming communities, and local talent make it a perfect home for the film industry,” said Governor Cooper. “This advisory council will play a critical role in helping the industry flourish, which creates good-paying jobs right here in North Carolina.” “North Carolina’s bourgeoning film industry already has created many jobs and expanded opportunities for companies to invest in our state,” said Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Secretary and Council Chair Susi Hamilton. “Gov. Cooper’s decision to create this council will greatly aid efforts to expand this industry and help North Carolina continue to prosper.”

Governor Cooper was joined by Sabrina Davis, a local business owner who spoke about the importance of a thriving film industry for North Carolina’s economy. “From 2010 through 2012, when

our bread and butter business--serving commercial construction and commercial real estate--was suffering considerably due to the lengthy recession I was so grateful that the film industry was booming. It got

us through what could have been disastrously lean times,” said Sabrina Davis, owner of Port City Signs and Graphics. “An investment in the film industry is not an investment in the n See FILM Page 2

In his 2019 budget, Governor Cooper sought to modernize the film grant program by dropping minimum spend requirements for featurelength films and raising per projects caps for films and TV series. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall was present to attest to the Executive Order. The Council will advise Gov. Cooper on efforts to grow and develop North Carolina’s film industry and support the work of the State Film Office. 24th Annual Art in the Arboretum will transform gardens into art gallery Nov. 1-3 The 24th annual Art in the Arboretum will be held Friday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the New Hanover County Arboretum at 6206 Oleander Drive in Wilmington. Sponsored by Friends of the Arboretum and the Wilmington Art Association, Art in the Arboretum will feature more than 140 artists, live music, food trucks, dance vignettes by US International Ballet, plein air painters, eighth grade and high school art displays, children’s art activities and art by Ability Garden participants. “’Art show’ brings to mind paintings and sculptures displayed against the gray or white walls of a gallery, but at Art in the Arboretum, attendees will view the artists’ creations surrounded by the beauty and color of the New Hanover County Arboretum’s gardens,” said New Hanover County Arboretum and Cooperative Extension Director Lloyd Singleton. “Visitors can stroll by the pond, walk the labyrinth in the Contemplation Garden, relax in the Japanese garden and enjoy and appreciate the talent of our artist community.” Artists will exhibit handcrafted jewelry, glass, textiles, metalwork, paintings, photography and a variety of other mediums. This year’s event adds an educational exhibit, “What Goes Around Comes Around,” by Bonnie

Monteleone, Executive Director of the Plastic Ocean Project. Using plastics collected during Monteleone’s research, a 25-foot wall of ocean waves was constructed to communicate the direct impact the disposal of plastic products has on life and environment. Art will be available for purchase throughout the weekend, and a raffle for restaurant gift cards, gift baskets and spa packages will be held to support the Arboretum grounds and programs. The drawings will be Sunday, Nov. 3, and participants do not have to be present to win. Tickets for Art in the Arboretum are $5. Admission is free for children under 12, military with ID and members of Friends of the Arboretum. Tickets to the Friends of the Arboretum Annual Member’s Party Saturday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. are sold separately and can be found at TheFriends.wildapricot.org. For more information on Art in the Arboretum, visit Arboretum.NHCgov.com, Facebook.com/ NewHanoverCountyArboretum or call 910-798-7670.

Aaron Lewis, Avett Brothers to perform at 2020 Azalea Festival

Former Staind lead singer Aaron Lewis, who is enjoying a second act as a No. 1 artist on the country charts as a solo artist, will perform on Thursday, April 2 at the North Carolina Azalea Festival. Lews will join the North Carolina-based Avett Brothers, who will

perform their only live show in the state (outside of the band’s annual New Year’s Eve show) on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the North Carolina Azalea Festival. "That's all I've ever done. My songs have always been me wearing my heart on my sleeve, and my emotions on my sleeve, and my misfortunes on my sleeve, my sins on my sleeve," Lewis says. "I don't feel like it would be genuine nor worthy of this crazy ride I've been on if it wasn't." Tickets for Lewis go on sale Saturday, October 26th at 10 am online through the Festival Website at an early bird discount of $10 off. This discount lasts through Saturday, November 9th. Contact the Festival Ticket Office for more information: 910-7944650 or info@ncazaleafestival.org.
