New Hanover County Schools to Close for Students on May 1st New Hanover County Schools announced today that schools will be closed for students on May 1, 2019, due to the number of teachers who plan to be out that day to participate in the teacher rally in Raleigh. May 1st will become an optional teacher workday for teachers and staff. As of April 23rd, 440 NHCS teachers are planning to be out on May 1st. “Closing schools on May 1st is a difficult decision. Our students lost nearly three weeks of school after Hurricane Florence, and we do not want them to have to miss any more time; however, with over 400 teachers and staff, who have already put in leave requests and more are expected, we cannot safely operate the schools on May 1st,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley. Further he stated that the Board has expressed their strong support for teachers and their issues, but were disappointed with the fact that students will have to miss another day of school. Student and school safety are top priorities in NHCS and are the driving factors in the decision to close schools; the district does not employ enough substitute teachers to keep the district open on May 1st. The Superintendent will collaborate with the Board to decide whether the day will have to be made up. That decision will be announced at a later date.

Open Houses, Public Hearings for Future Cape Fear Crossing The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold two open houses and public hearings next week concerning a major project in eastern North Carolina. The Cape Fear Crossing is an approximately 9.5-mile proposed road and high-level bridge over the Cape Fear River that would help improve traffic flow and enhance freight movements from U.S. 17 and Interstate 140 in Brunswick County to U.S. 421 near the Port of Wilmington in southern New Hanover County. U.S. 17 serves as one of the primary entry points into Wilmington from the west, and the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization determined that an additional crossing is needed to alleviate congestion on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge (U.S. 76/U.S. 421/ U.S. 17 Business). Maps displaying the location and design of the project are available on the project website or the NCDOT public meetings website. The public is invited to the open houses and hearings at the following times and locations: • Monday, April 29 John T. Hoggard High School Cafeteria 4305 Shipyard Boulevard, Wilmington

Open House: 5 - 6:30 p.m., Hearing: 7 p.m. • Tuesday, April 30 North Brunswick High School Gym 114 Scorpion Drive, Leland Open House: 5 - 6:30 p.m., Hearing: 7 p.m. NCDOT representatives will be available at the open houses to answer questions and receive comments regarding the proposed project. The opportunity to provide verbal comments and/or submit written comments and questions will be provided. The public may attend at any time during the above hours. Please note that the same information will be presented at both meetings. The formal presentations will consist of an explanation of the location of the six detailed study alternatives, right of way and relocation requirements and procedures. The public will have the opportunity to comment. The presentation and comments will be recorded, and a written transcript will be prepared. If you can’t attend the meeting, NCDOT will live-stream the public hearing on its Facebook page. Questions and comments entered into the Facebook post during the event will not be answered or be n See CROSSING Page 2

World’s Top Pros Battle for Carolina Cup Titles this Weekend in Wrightsville Beach Australian Michael Booth and Germany’s Sonni Hönscheid are in the spotlight at this weekend’s Carolina Cup in Wrightsville Beach. Both champs are slated to defend their titles against an army of the world’s top professionals in the grueling Graveyard Race, one of the most challenging standup paddleboard races on the circuit. “The Graveyard course is the most punishing singleday race on the international calendar every year,” said fivetime Carolina Cup Champion Annabel Anderson of New

Zealand. “It is technically demanding, tactically difficult, and physically punishing, the true test of the complete paddler.” “The Graveyard Race is 21-kilometers of varied conditions that test the best of the best every year,” said Booth, rated as one the top two paddlers in the world in both the Paddle League and APP rankings. “It’s a long race, and everything can happen,” said Hönscheid, winner of the women’s Paddle League’s World Title in 2018.

Scheduled for April 24-28, the Carolina Cup is one of the world’s largest paddle festivals, featuring races, clinics, expos, and entertainment, with athletes attending from over 20 nations and virtually every state in the USA. “Registration is tracking close to last year for the Graveyard and maybe a little bump higher,” said Mark Schmidt, Carolina Cup Race Director. “This year, we are using the APP/WPA for our live feed coverage and should have the links by Friday (April 26) around 1 PM.”

Carolina Cup includes standup paddleboard, prone, kayak, surfski, and OC endurance races. Distances are 5, 10, and 21-kilometers, with course selection and length designed to meet a wide range of skill levels. A short sprint course on the sound is the host site for the Kids Race. Competitors at Carolina Cup include Olympians, worldrecord holders, champions, professionals, amateurs, and first-time paddlers. All races begin and end at Blockade Runner Beach Resort, the n See CUP Page 6

Coastal Resources Commission Passes Resolution Opposing Offshore Drilling

RESOLUTION NO. (2019) 2149 Board of Aldermen Town of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina Date: April 11, 2019 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN OF THE TOWN OF WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NORTH CAROLINA DECLARING ITS INTENT TO CLOSE A PORTON OF THE OLD TIDE WATER POWER COMPANY RIGHT OF WAY AND A PORTION OF SOUTH LUMINA AVENUE LOCATED WEST AND SOUTH OF WINGS IN THE TOWN OF WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH WHEREAS, the Board of Aldermen of the Town of Wrightsville Beach has received a request regarding the closing of a portion of the old Tide Water Power Company right of way and a portion of South Lumina Avenue immediately south of Wings and located within the Town of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina and as described hereinafter; and WHEREAS, the Board of Aldermen of the Town of Wrightsville Beach is of the opinion that the right of way described hereinafter should be closed and that the closing of the same is in the public interest, all in accordance with the provisions of N.C.G.S. § 160A-299. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Aldermen of the Town of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina that: 1. The Board of Aldermen of the Town of Wrightsville Beach hereby declares its intent to close a portion of the old Tide Water Power Company right of way and a portion of South Lumina Avenue immediately south of Wings and located in the Town of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, said right of way to be closed being more particularly described as follows:

RALEIGH – The N.C. Coastal Resources Commission passed a resolution Thursday opposing offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling off North Carolina. Citing impacts from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, the resolution states there are inherent risks to the region from offshore oil and natural gas exploration and drilling that have the potential to irrevocably harm North Carolina’s natural environment, economic wellbeing and overall quality of life. The resolution also references numerous scientific studies that raise concerns about adverse impacts of seismic testing on marine mammals and fisheries. CRC Chair Renee Cahoon noted that the states of

Florida and South Carolina have come out against offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling, as has Governor Roy Cooper and most coastal cities and towns in North Carolina. “The time is right to take a stand, and I think we need to be united in North Carolina at this time,” Cahoon said. “We need to be leaders in this too.” The resolution passed unanimously. “I applaud the commission and support their commitment to protect our coastal communities from the environmental and economic risks of offshore drilling and seismic testing. I look forward to working with them on this vitally important issue,” said DEQ Secretary Michael S. Regan, who addressed the CRC on this issue earlier in the day.

New Hanover County Telecommunicator of the Year Heather Bower, left, pictured with New Hanover County Emergency Management & 911 director Steven Still, was named New Hanover EM/911 Telecommunicator of the Year. Bower was recognized for training new telecommunicators, working with the 911 for Kids program and supporting her team in fun ways.

(A legal description of the area to be closed can be found in the Office of the Town Clerk or at www.townofwrightsvillebeach. com.) 2. The Board of Aldermen will hear all persons on the question of whether or not the closing would be detrimental to the public interest or the property rights of any individual at a public hearing to be held on May9, 2019 at 5:30 p.m., or as soon thereafter as the matter can be reached, at Town Hall, 321 Causeway Drive, Wrightsville Beach, NC.

Seahawk men, women claim CAA golf championship UNCW Sports Both the men’s and women’s golf teams at the University of North Carolina Wilmington won Colonial Athletic Association golf championships this month. \The UNCW men’s team defended its Colonial Athletic Association men's golf championship and freshman Segundo Oliva Pinto earned medalist honors by winning a playoff on Sunday at Pinehurst Course #8. The Seahawks, who will advance to the NCAA regionals for a second straight season, overtook the College of Charleston early on Sunday and posted a six-stroke victory over the Cougars. Oliva Pinto, meanwhile, rallied to force a fourway tie for first and force a playoff. Pinto then earned the championship with a birdie on hole number 18. UNCW, which now has seven conference titles to its credit, carded a tournament low-round of 281, three-under-par, to win the title. Reese McFarlane paced the Seahawks at three-under for the round and finished tied for fifth. Pinto and Blake McShea both were one-under with McShea tying for ninth. Stephen Saleeby and Tripp Summerlin finished

tied for 11th and 21st overall. Oliva Pinto is UNCW's first tournament champion since Payne McLeod won it in 2013.He also becomes the sixth Seahawk to win medalist honors at the CAA tournament. Freshman Phu Khine capped off a stellar weekend by earning individual medalist honors as UNCW secured its fifth Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship with an outstanding effort in the final round at The Reserve Course at St. James Plantation at Sunday afternoon. Led by Khine, the Seahawks finished the tournament with a 303 team score on Sunday to claim the crown by 17 strokes over Delaware. Charleston, the 2018 CAA champion, placed third in the eight-team field with a 936 team score. Khine, who entered the final round in a tie for fourth place, surged to the individual lead during Sunday's round by posting an even-par 72. The Yangon, Myanmar, native posted a birdie on each of her first three holes before completing the first nine holes at even par. Khine collected a birdie on the 11th hole and closed the round with four consecutive pars to secure her individual title, marking the third straight year a UNCW golfer has won the individual championship.

Junior Thao My Nguyen finished in a tie for third place after shooting a 5-over 77 in the final round while freshman Madison Isaacson posted a 12th place effort following a 6-over 78. Khine was named as the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the AllTournament Team by Nguyen. The Seahawks, who claimed their first CAA crown since 2012, earned the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship field, which will be announced on Apr. 24. CAA Champs UNCW Selected for Norman Regional in Women’s National Championship Colonial Athletic Association champion UNCW will continue its season by competing at the Norman Regional of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship on May 6-8, at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. The Seahawks, who are making their ninth NCAA Regional appearance, return to the NCAA field for the first time since 2012 after winning their fifth CAA crown two weeks ago. "We are excited to be selected for the Norman Regional," UNCW Coach Cindy Ho said. "We have some experience of playing on that golf course after Lori Beth Adams qualified for the regionals as an individual in 2013. If we want to do well, we are going to need all five of our players to be playing their best golf on the course." UNCW, which earned the No. 16 seed in the regional, will be joined by Texas, Wake Forest, Florida, Arizona State, Oklahoma, TCU, Pepperdine, Purdue, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, NC State, Texas A&M, UTSA, Sam Houston State and Fairleigh Dickinson. Tee times and pairings for the opening round will be announced at a later date.
