Passing of a Friend When word came that Verle Helle had succumbed to cancer I was shocked to say the least. Having spoken to Verle just a few weeks before and found him in his usual happy upbeat self, never once mentioning that he was ill. Just like the Verle I’ve known for well over 20 years not to dwell on the bad, but to focus on the positive and do it with a laugh and a smile. The first time we met was brief. At the time I was a jack of all trades in the forest industry in southern Indiana working as a logger, truck driver, sawyer, millwright and mill manager. Verle was visiting Jeff Roll’s mill in English, Indiana. Jeff had recently upgraded his mill with a Helle mill and Verle was just checking in. While there delivering a load of logs we all began to ‘talk sawmill’ and from that meeting of just a few moments a bond was formed. Our paths crossed again when I began my new career as an advertising sales rep for a national magazine. Like most new salesman I called on who I knew first and to my surprise Verle remembered our brief meeting years before in the break room of a sawmill. That exemplified who the man, Verle Helle was and will remain in the hearts of those who knew him well and those who only had the opportunity to meet him briefly. The memory of an elephant, Verle could recall a customer’s name from ten years before who had bought a piece of used equipment and tell you who the original owner was as well as laugh and share a story about something that had happened at the mill. A sawmiller through and through, he could step out of his truck, listen to a mill and tell you the lead was set wrong before he ever stepped foot in the mill. Working for almost 45 years in the company his father, Delbert Helle,

had formed, and he never slowed down. Full of exuberance and energy, men half his age found it tough to keep up whether working on an installation or just making sales calls. Missing him daily but carrying on the company’s strong tradition of quality, value and customer service are Dwight Helle, Doug Helle, Chris Helle, Bryan Carpentier, Tommy Staggs and a staﬀ of over 25 dedicated employees. When not working to help a sawmill owner improve his operation, Verle was a loving, caring husband, father, brother, and friend. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be missed by all. Beyond business and family Verle, an avid golfer, somehow found time to serve as a board member of the Canton Country Club, Farmington Rotary Club, the Farmington Moose Lodge, the Elmwood Country Club, and he was an active member of the community. Verle Edwin Helle, 66 of Farmington, Illinois passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2009, at his residence. Born February 9, 1943, in Peoria, the son of Delbert and Nellie (Hayes) Helle, he grew up near Farmington, and married Patricia Simpson on April 3, 1999. Survivors include his wife and best friend, Patricia; two daughters, Kimberly Blue of Canton and Lisa (Berkley) Matthews of Canton; two stepdaughters, Christina (Christopher) Kahler of LaGrange Park and Rebecca Simpson of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren, Andrea (Matthew) Stuﬄebeam of Delavan, Alyssa (Nick) Green of Canton, Karrisa ( Justin) Tourtillott of Canton, McKaylin Matthews of Canton, and

Cassidy and Kate Kahler of LaGrange Park; four great-grandchildren, Zac Man, Alex, Julia, and Mason; three brothers, Gordon ( Janet) Helle of Yuma, Ariz., Maurie (Wendy) Helle of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dwight ( Joyce) Helle of Farmington; two sisters, Adajune (Bill) Parker of Newark, Ohio and Joann (Raymond) Young of Cuba; and 20 nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lawrence Helle; and one sister, Phyllis Helle. Memorials may be made to the Illinois Cancer Center.
