Bagong Silangan High School (BSHS) in coordination with the QCLGU sheltered approximately 500 residents of Bagong Silangan who were affected by the onslaught of Typhoon Paeng on October 29, 2022. Amidst the devastating weather conditions, BSHS swiftly mobilized its resources to accommodate families from low-lying areas seeking safety and assistance.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, BSHS staff worked to ensure the safety of the evacuees. BSHS Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee led the evacuation activities.

The school’s preparedness and effective coordination were evident as they provided support and assistance to those in need.

However, some concerns were raised regarding the entry process, which led to extended wait times due to the requirement of a valid ID.

Evacuees expressed their distress over the delays, highlighting the challenging circumstances they faced during this critical time.

“They handled the situation well naman, kasi nakaready sila at may mga nag a-assist naman, but yun nga lang ang tagal nila magpapasok nakakaawa yung mga evacuees.” one evacuee said in acknowledging the efforts made by BSHS and its staff.

(They handled the situation well, they were prepared, and there were people assisting, but the entry process took a long time, which was unfortunate for the evacuees.)

In the aftermath of the typhoon, the community came together to support the recovery process.

Within a week, residents in various areas of Bagong Silangan received much-needed food packs, which aim to alleviate the immediate impact of the disaster and aid in their ongoing recovery.
