FLOATING NYMPHÉAS Xixi Leisure Center is one of the 12 buildings located in an ar t and culture compound in Xixi National Wetland Park, a cluster architecture commissioned to 12 Chinese architects by Hangzhou city government. This project is for a spa and community center, the intention of the project was to establish an experiential relationship between a group of buildings and the context. Using natural feathers of overlapping leaves to constitute a system that could orgnize verticle traffic experiences effectly, meanwhile, creating comfortable leisure public spaces. The tiny Thumelina woke up very early in the morning, and when she saw where she was she began to cry bitterly; for no every side of the great green leaf was water, and she could not get to the land.

FLOATING WATER LILY LEAVES The format and organization of leaves leads an outdoor promenade from the paths up to roof terraces discovering small water lily ponds, eventually unveiling the wetland to a panoramic view from above. A pause on these leaves might evoke a déjà vu, a fantasy traced back thousands years ago from our ancestors’ believes, that after years and years of intense mental and physical training, we, human beings, are able to pause upon water, light as a fur, alert as a dragonfly, meditating the breeze and aroma in our nature. 04

The leisure center will house leisure function as open and continuous circulation on ground level and sunken into activity pools imitating paths and ponds of wetland topography, while on second level, spedicalized SPA rooms become individual spaces, like the thumbnail floating in water lily leaves, carried by leisure circulation underneath.

RELATIONSHIPS OF AMBIGUITY The public spaces get their charachter after their proximity to the context, creating more layers and inbetween spaces, graduating to private from edge and inside. It creates overlapping and continiously fluent spaces. We sense limitation and limitless of space at the same time, closure and aperture giving a curious sense of distance. URBANIZED SINOLOGY National sinology center will become the engine of contemporary urban culture, the platform of connection between Chinese tradition and real life. It brings the Chinese ancient spirit, the ideal world hidden in the nature to the central areas of Beijing, and by the means of " hidding the secret in front of public", create a cultural center in which we could be preaching enlightening and deliberating the Chinese ancient philosophy, which is called urbanized Chinese sinology center.

LOGICAL SPACES The design concept is to translate the inner spirit of "Sinology" into an urbanized background. The open floor plan at the ground floor has mingled the generic urban lifestyle with exhibition and educational spaces, leading the flow of pedestrian traffic upwards which emphasizes the physical and metaphorical transition between chaotic urban scenes to sublimantion 1.People flow from West personal experience. The scenes along the journey are carefully constructed via clear logical architectural spaces: the void spaces have a frame and tanon structure elaborating the "blankness" and " meditative" spirit lingering in traditional Chinese architecture. 20


The space on the ground floor and underground level blends in with the daily life. It houses a combination of art, literature, commercial and recreational activities.

OLD FACTORY REDEVELOPMENT Under the process of urban renewal ,the redevelopment of shanghai jiading mill factory is about creating a mutifunctional industral park that is fit for economic development and keep the original city memory and historical context. The specificity of the layout and architectral language of original factory space brings great possibility of revolution, leading us to design a public space with modern industries and an image as the new landmark of Jiading old town. EXISTING CONDITIONS & CHALLENGES Oringinal Shanghai textile mill located in the south of Jiading old town, next to the moat, which is a very important position. As the development of Jiading old town, the main challenge of the project lies in maintianing the original urban memories and historical context, while creating a comprehensive industrial park. 1 how to integrate with the existing urban fabric 2 how to introduce new programs to activate the factory area 3 how to create a cultural landmark in the old town 31

VEIL FOR THE NEW METROPLIS Situated at the junction of Chang'an Avenue and East Third Ring Road, the store occupies the two story podium of the China World Trade Center.The store has a seventy-meter long facade front, designed to catch attention along Chang'an Avenue. The design takes advantage of the long facade to create different experiences for viewers at different distances and travelling at different speeds. The world trade center is located in Beijing east Changan avenue and east sanhuan road junction, which is the capital of eastern Beijing's transportation hub. This area is frequently loaded with heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The facade design is in response to the slowing down in the speed of movement, captivating people's attention as they pass the store.

DYNAMIC PATTERN A pattern composed of Louis Vuitton logle is applied to each pane. The "damier" pattern is gradually dissolved into smaller scales in order to enhance the visual effect. The angle and size of the varying panes make the overlapping image appear three dimensional. The glass panes gradually rotate to create varying levels of overlap. This magically transforms the static Louis Vuitton pattern into a visual dynamic effect. The architecture is enlivened by the viewer's changing perspective. An interactive relationship is created between the building and the viewer. 46

The upper part of the glass panes are hung by an independant structure beneath the existing third floof beams.The body of the panel is perforated with circularholes to minimize the lateral wind load. The lower part of the glass panes are stabilized by two members:1. within each column bay, a tensile cable ties every panel nd brings the load to the column through compression struts.2. hinge fittings anchor the end of the panel to the wall structure.

BUILDING AS NARRATIVE LANDSCAPE The project is for a steel museum on the hillside of suburb in an industral city - Anshan. The intention of the project was to establish an experiential relationship between the building and the landscape. Using a system of color(merterial), the circulation with different possibilities that lead people from inside to outdoor space, from urban to nature, arousing the awareness of people to protect the environment during the rapid industrial development. MATERIAL AS A NARRATIVE DEVICE The exhitbition is infiltrated throughout with color coded clues. Visitors enter the building with a mixture of industrial elements celebrating the development of science in modern society. As the visitors continue their journey, the spaces transfroms from close to open, from the artificial to the natural. When people are personally on the scene of natural and look back to the industral city, it is not only the experience they enjoy, but also the consciousness of environmental protection being aroused. 90

UNFORBIDDEN CITY The “(Un)Forbidden City” is Alessi new metaproject that aims at exploring the potential of Chinese product design. Alessi has invited 7 best renowned Chinese architects who for the first time ever have been asked to tackle an industrial design project and to give their own interpretation of one of Alessi’s most typological archetype: the tray. The concept is inspired of the conceptial reversal of forbidden city - natural landscape, and try to interpret by the functional and elegant tray product. BABBLE The project is aim to design a portable furniture prototype which could be used as both the bag and table for people to carry out for picnic. "BABBLE" means bag and table at the same time, by using rhino and grasshopper to analyse the angle of each piece of wood to make sure it could stay stablely which is a combination of parametric and practical design.
