Use open strings wherever possible. Broad dynamics have been included to imply an overall shape; appropriate, detailed decisions should be made by the performer during the performance. Dynamics should generally be p, and may range from pp to mf. Vibrato should range from none to a tiny bit. e bow should generally be a little sul tasto; it may explore between sul tasto and norm. (at the discretion of the performer), but never sul pont. Tremolos enclosed by a bracket are to extend for a suitable duration, likely 4-1 2 seconds. Progression should feel organic. e rate of tremolo is still determined by the tempo (jjjq = c. 48), though this may also fluctuate naturally. e pauses at the ends of phrases are quite free; recommended duration c. 4-8 seconds, depending on the acoustic of the performance venue. All accidentals have been notated for clarity. e performance of this piece should be treated as an entirely introspective phenomenon; it is a chance to freely explore a new soundworld. e largest settlement on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is a town called Longyearbyen. Longyearbyen sits on the south shore of Adventorden. Across the bay towers the mountain Hiorthellet, rising nearly a kilometre from the arctic waters. When I arrived in September 201 8 thick clouds completely obscured Hiorthellet. Longyearbyen seemed to be adri in a grey void, alone. I turned to walk to my accommodation. Aer some time I looked back, and was surprised at the sudden appearance of a mountain. e next morning, a light dusting of snow rested atop the peak.
