Lubar Educational Guide to Excellence Academic and Career Planning Checklist Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Lubar School of Business! We are excited to have you join our school and are eager to work with you. In today’s competitive job market, you may be looking for an edge to enhance your skills and move ahead of the competition. This document offers you the Lubar EDGE (Educational Guide to Excellence). The EDGE will serve as a guide to help you navigate the relationships, responsibilities, and opportunities you encounter as a Lubar student. Career and Academic advising play a pivotal role in your success as a student. By using the EDGE we will help you integrate the advising experience to maximize your potential.


Explore

Freshman (0–23 credits)

The following should be completed by the end of your freshman year.

o Meet with your Academic Advisor for a Focus On Freshman (FOF) appointment

o Meet with your Career Advisor to learn what services are available

Congratulations! Welcome to your sophomore year. You’ve successfully completed the transition to college and now it’s time to dig in. Get busy and be engaged. Remember, you will get out of your college experience what you put into it.

o Accounting Majors: Check on interview timelines after completion of BUS ADM 301 Internships. o o Full-time positions.

(24–55 credits)

Junior (56–85 credits)

The following should be completed by the end of your junior year.

o Meet with your Academic Advisor to confirm you have met all admission requirements

o Complete the pink Admission to Major form. (To avoid registration issues or a delayed graduation,

we recommend that you be admitted to your major by the middle of your junior year).

o Plan your semester and discuss your timeline for graduation. o Review the number of credits remaining for any majors, minors, certificates, etc. and any

prerequisites that may affect the sequencing of your classes.

o Check your progress by answering the following:

Have you taken or are you enrolled in the 300-level core course in your intended major? What Major Electives/courses are you going to take for your major? Do you want to double major or add a certificate to your degree plan? What internship opportunities have you found that provide career-related experience?

o Know your program’s requirements Track your progress by reviewing your personalized Academic Advisement Report. o o For instructions on accessing your Advisement Report see advisement.uwm.edu.

o Meet with your Career Advisor to develop plans for your second internship

o Watch for e-mails from the Career Services Center on sponsored internships, such as LaMacchia

and Jacobus, and other opportunities.


You are halfway there! It is time to enrich the experiences and knowledge you’ve gained during the first two years as a business student. As a student admitted to your major, you will start taking upper-level business courses and identify the specific area(s) of business you want to pursue.

o Enrich your academic experiences

o Begin to research Graduate and Professional Schools Review GPA and other standardized test requirements. o o Learn what personal statements and other application essays require and how to write them.

(56–85 credits)

Explore Study Abroad Opportunities—as part of a group or on your own—as a way to improve your o understanding of the diverse cultures of the world and begin developing the skills needed for a business career in the global market. • Contact your Advisor or the Study Abroad Office: Pearse Hall Room 166, 414-229-5782, studyabroad.uwm.edu. o Speak with Faculty and Staff about specializations and current trends in your areas of interest. o Continue to meet with faculty and staff to build relationships and act as a positive reference for you. o Take on a leadership role in a Lubar Business Student Organization: See lubar.uwm.edu/studentorgs. o Connect with Business Professionals in the Multicultural Mentoring Program: lubar.uwm.edu/multicultural.

Enrich Junior

Embark

Senior (86 credits and beyond)

The following should be completed by the end of your senior year.

o Meet with an Academic Advisor to ensure you will complete all graduation requirements

o Jot down any questions you have. o Review your Academic Advisement Report via PAWS. o Register as soon as possible to obtain classes you need to meet graduation requirements.

o Complete the Graduation Checklist:

uwm.edu/current_students/graduation_information Apply for Fall/UWinteriM graduation no later than the first Friday after the start of fall classes. o o Apply for Spring/Summer graduation no later than the fourth Friday of January, or the Friday after the start

of spring classes.

o Examine your PAWS account. Your graduation status will remain “under review” until all final grades are

posted unless there is a problem with your record.

o Meet with a Career Advisor to discuss goals and develop a plan for after graduation

o Develop plans to embark on your journey after graduation

If you chose graduate school you will want to start your application about a year before you want to start the program: o Review application deadlines. o Take relevant standardized tests. o Write your personal statement/application essay. o Gather recommendation letters if needed.

Embark Senior

(86 credits and beyond)


Congratulations, Lubar Graduate! The Lubar School of Business is proud of your outstanding achievements and pleased to call you a Lubar Alum! We hope that as you begin the next phase of your life, you are able to reflect on and draw from the varied experiences you have had as a student which have prepared you for this moment. We encourage you to remain involved with the Lubar School and UWM through participation in the Alumni Association, Career Services offerings, the Graduate School and continuing education, as well as through our mentoring programs. Thank you for all of your hard work and contributions to the Lubar School of Business. Although you are now a business graduate, the Lubar team will remain dedicated to serving you, both now and in the years to come.
