August 31, 2013 10am to 4pm

The British Car Club will again be in attendance displaying their wonderful vehicles in the upper field. The Bow Horne Bay Community Club is happy to bring you the 43rd Annual Lighthouse Country Fall Fair on the grounds of the Lighthouse Community Centre. We have something for everyone so come out and enjoy the day.

Stroll the open air market for great finds from our varied local vendors, watch the local “Dog Whisperer” train the dogs, look up to the skies to see model airplanes soaring overhead, visit the chainsaw carvers in the upper field and watch them turn a cedar log into a work of art. The day has ongoing entertainment for kids: FREE petting zoo, pony rides, bouncy castle and organized games all geared to keep young fair goers happily entertained. We have a professional photographer to take photos and email digital copies to you so be sure and stop by and get your FREE photo. The photographer will also be available at the stage to take photos of the winning exhibitors proudly displaying their ribbons!

What would the fair be without our fabulous pet and bike parade led by Daisy Cow and followed by the talented “Bolting Brassicas” from Lasqueti Island?

Our Outdoor Stage Manager is busy cooking up a wonderful variety of local talent for you to sit and listen to or get your feet tapping. BARDO, – the glove-trained barred owl will once again make an appearance and will educate you about these beautiful raptors. He is used in the wildlife education program at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Assoc. in Errington.

Bring in your entries on The Bow Horne Bay Community Club encompasses the communities of Lighthouse Country-Bowser,Horne Lake, Qualicum Bay and Deep Bay and has been going strong since 1970. The Club encourages family involvement and community spirit through hosting community events which in turn help to promote our area’s local organizations and businesses. Our primary projects include the Annual Fall Fair, the Mother’s Day Hanging Basket Sale, Trivia Night and the Lighthouse Country Garden Tour and Strawberry Tea. Funds raised through these events are donated for improvements to Your Community Hall, two Scholarships, The Bowser Foodbank, The Bowser Hot Lunch Program as well as other Emergency Needs that may occur in our communities. We welcome new members at any time, so please call Patricia McLean at 250-757-8806 to become more involved with the Community Club. BRING IN YOUR ENTRIES TO THE 43RD ANNUAL FALL FAIR ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 30TH – 1PM – 5:30PM

CONTINUE THE TRADITION

Celebrate the 43rd Annual Lighthouse

COUNTRY FALL FAIR

May has arrived and it is time to start planning your entries for the 43rd Annual Lighthouse Country Fall Fair. Whether it be the Best Tomatoes, the Perfect Peach, the tastiest baking or something in the many other categories in our guide, we look forward to displaying and sharing your creations and perhaps inspiring others to create and take up rewarding pastimes. We have added some new categories and removed some old ones as well as done some rearranging so we are SURE there is a category for everyone. We would also like to thank our local businesses for their support to help fund this community family event, enabling us to keep our admission fees down and maintain our mandate to keep the children’s activities FREE for all kids. We are sure you will enjoy the local talent on the main stage and the demos and entertainers on the inside stage as well as the varied vendors and artists throughout the grounds and in the Artists Hall. SO, plan your entries now, be part of this community event and perhaps win a prize, a coveted ribbon or trophy and especially the “bragging rights”. We would be remiss if we did not give a HUGE thank you to our past President, Sheena McCorquodale, and a big welcome to some returning and some new Board Members. We all look forward to organizing and making this 43rd Annual Fair enjoyable and memorable.

The Herring specie has 500 times more count than all the humans on earth.

A salmon can change from living in fresh water to living in salt water by changing its body chemistry How rich a diet of Krill & Shrimp the salmon feeds on makes its flesh pink. Salmon raised on farms are given artificial colouring in their food. From the 3,000 to 5,000 Salmon eggs laid by one Salmon only one or two make it to full growth CULTURED PACIFIC SCALLOP INDUSTRY has been established since 1989 on Vancouver Island in Qualicum Bay. ISLAND SCALLOPS LIMITED in Qualicum Bay lays claim to North America’s only Pacific scallop farm industry.

The complete cycle from scallop seed in the Qualicum Bay hatchery to the harvest from the Pacific Ocean takes two to three years. Shellfish growing has been practiced in BC for at least 100 years. The first introduction of Oyster seed was introduced in the Ladysmith Harbour, Boundary Bay and Esquimalt in 1903. Mussels, Oysters, Clams and Scallops are the basic species utilized in Canadian aquaculture. The majority of shellfish production in BC takes place in Baynes Sound, Cortez Island and Okeover Inlet.
