he Canadian Dam Association would like to extend an invitation to the dam safety community to join us in Winnipeg from September 28 to October 2 at our 2008 Annual Conference. This is a great opportunity for us to share ideas and information on dam and public safety and help advance CDA’s knowledge of national and international dam practices.

TECHNICAL PROGRAM The technical program of the conference will cover a wide range of topics related to the conference theme: “Emerging Technologies for Dams.” The program includes special sessions on new technologies related to tailings dams, environmental assessments and mitigation, and fish habitat of local and national relevance to dam engineering.

The host city for the conference is Winnipeg, located at the historic junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in the Province of Manitoba and at the geographic centre of North America. The city is Canada’s eighth largest and has immense ethnic diversity, elements of which will be showcased during the conference. The city’s history is rooted in the arrival of fur trading posts in the area in the early 1700s. Permanent settlement began in 1812, and the city was incorporated in 1873 with a population less than 2,000 people. After the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s, and a long period of unprecedented growth and development, Winnipeg became the wholesale, administrative and financial centre of Western Canada. Railway connections led to an influx of immigrants who founded the city’s cultural fabric. The city has had steady growth since the end of World War II and is now home to approximately 650,000 people. Winnipeg is a major grain, financial, manufacturing and transportation centre and is well known for its hospitality, restaurants, shopping, parks and outdoor activities. The conference venue is the prestigious Fairmont 10
