A NOTE FROM LTD...

LOV ETODECOR ATE SL .COM

It is the last issue for 2015! What a year and what an issue we have put together to see out 2015. The latter part of this year has been great for us as a company. We have grown in so many ways and we plan to continue to grow even more in 2016. The first big change is a change of ownership. Editorial Clarity & Elvi Hartley are now joint owners/partners in LTD and together plan to bring improvements and additional features in what LTD has to offer both readers and clients. Recently, we have been busy hiring residents to expand our website and marketing team. We had a tremendous response to this and are excited to get to work on presenting new material on a regular basis to lovetodecoratesl.com. This vision is for it to ultimately become a second magazine for us. We aim to publish more magazine quality features, articles, reviews of products and more. We are also introducing a video service for our LTD Real Estate. Some projects have been set back a little due to many reasons, but have not been forgotten. 2016 is a year full of exciting changes and opportunities and we cannot wait to get stuck into it as a team. Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoy and get inspired for the season with the November/December 2015 issue of our magazine. Love to Decorate,

Bazar has been a popular Second Life® brand on the Home & Garden scene for over five years now. We met up with designer Ria Bazar Mavendorf to chat about Bazar’s success and longevity in what is a well patronised market with many designers competing against each other.

Ria first started offering items on Marketplace in 2010 and over the years has expanded to a large store which sells stylish homes for ground and skybox, and lots of furniture and decor to fill them with. As we chatted, we discovered that there were a number of distinct reasons for Bazar’s popularity and those lay in listening and adapting to customer needs, having a real love for interior design and constantly evaluating trends, and offering an all round service for matching homes and furniture. Back in real life, interior decorating is Ria’s profession. In fact she admits to living for decorating and sometimes driving her husband nuts in the process! She saw the possibilities of further design opportunities in Second Life® right back when sculpties were de rigueur, and she started to learn Blender. As Mesh made its appearance, she transitioned over smoothly, and at the moment her interior design ventures are done solely within Second Life®. Bazar’s customers play a big part in encouraging Ria’s designs. She says, “I get a lot of requests and I love it when my customers are involved with the products. Without them I would not be here... after all I am nothing without my fans! The best of all is when people write to me about how much they enjoy my products, that’s the biggest motivation of all.” Originally Bazar was going to be a furniture and decor brand, but then when Ria made the Toronto Set, she created part of a room for the advert display. Customers wrote back saying they loved the room and where could they purchase the house. So Ria went ahead and made the Toronto House which became a best seller. Further beach homes and statement houses followed, each with Ria’s particular sense of modern design which is both spacious and peaceful. She says that she can create her own designs but that it’s also much more fun when people actually use the homes and enjoy them, so research and feedback continue to be a big part of what fuels Bazar. There are always lots of items in any Bazar set. We often see Bazar decor items being used in stylist’s pictures and indeed in many Second Life® homes. We wondered if this was a marketing strategy. Again, it was customer generated. Ria says, “When I started a lot of people asked me, ‘Do you have anything that would fit with so and so? That’s when I got the idea to make sets of furniture where everything fits with one another.” This is perfect for lazy decorators who want stunning houses and furniture. Buy a Bazar house, buy the furniture that matches it, job done! Ria says that if the sets aren’t fun for her to make, then they wouldn’t be fun for customers to use, so that is another big part of Bazar – entertaining mix

n match pieces that people can enjoy using. We asked how Ria kept her finger on the pulse of current trends in Home & Garden design. She replied that she followed a lot of blogs and magazines and that some ideas are always generated from those sources. In addition to that, she also travels a lot so she gets lots of inspiration from different towns and cities, and other countries, too. As well as being open to new trends, Ria also tries out new design programs. A recent one is Marvellous Designer which, whilst being primarily a clothing design program, can also deal with textiles. She says, “You can make all the pillows and basically everything made out of textiles, but shhhhh, it’s a secret!” Cat’s out of the bag now! Ria would like to see other designers making use of it, though, and to exploring the creative possibilities of this fascinating new program. N.B. Marvellous Designer is a program which has a pattern based approach allowing designers to create 3D virtual clothing. It features an interactive design interface, were designers can instantaneously edit and drape garments onto 3D forms with high-fidelity simulation. There is a 15 day free trial and purchase is by subscription only. As for texturing, Ria uses Photoshop and occasionally purchases textures from Marketplace since she reckons there are some great texture designers out there. We remarked on how good the Bazar pieces look when viewed in a simple Midday setting. This is intentional, since Ria works with low graphics at the moment. She does intend to use Materials eventually, and then she will gauge customer reactions. “I just like to make sure the products will look good in any light setting. Materials – it’s a great new feature and I would love to use it but I still know that there are many people that don’t use it yet. I’m a wee bit slow in making the transition so I’m giving my customers some time, usually they don’t mind.” Ria likes new innovations and recently she’s introduced Scene Rezzing into some of the homes. This is a feature which allows a customer to get even more space in the back of their Bazar home and with only one click it creates entire themed scenes. All houses have free footprints to try on your own land first and to make sure that the Bazar house you’re interested in actually fits your land. Again, it’s indicative of good customer service. She’s not only interested in ground based homes but also sky homes. “Sky space is cheaper to rent so that’s a huge advantage but also it’s a great opportunity for us designers to imagine new concepts of living in Second Life®. Of course we should always think of how to make it even more fun as well as lessen the Land Impact!”

On a personal note, Ria met her husband in Second Life® seven years ago at the ~O~ Karaoke Lounge which is still in existence. They got on wonderfully well, having much in common – he’s a musician - and she decided to move to Germany to be with him five years back. They were married in August 2014, so that in itself is a success story! It was a small wedding, just friends and family, but very beautiful. Ria says, People on the outside don’t understand about Second Life® but you can really find forever lasting friendship here, if not more. The cutest thing of all is that there are actually other designers with similar stories.” It seems a natural flair for creativity is sometimes a precursor to a life changing relationship. So what are Bazar’s plans for the future? Well, more Events for one. Ria finds these very useful in terms of theme structures and keeping to a schedule. She’s fascinated by the creative minds that run the Events as they come up with new ideas and make the Events popular. She says, “Events are in general a great help for advertising. And I have to say they helped me a great deal in spreading my brand message.” Bazar will run as long as people continue to enjoy the products. Ria says, “I love what I do. Second Life® is a virtual reality where any design is possible, be it ground or sky homes, various designs in furniture and decor, it doesn’t matter any more. We are only limited by our imagination.” Informations and Links: • • • •

Soy.

A realistic and parallel world...

Soy is a relative newcomer to the Home & Garden world, being in production for around a year and a half. It’s run by designer, Soyoy. Soy’s products are beautifully intricate and sometimes witty, and they always strive to maintain style and low Land Impact. The texturing is superb and Soy has gained many customers in a short while. The Soy main store is on a dedicated sim and very well appointed. Visitors land in the atrium of a large warehouse with all the goods set out with plenty of space to view them, and it’s easy to use the teleports to get around from the front desk. The furniture, housing and decor products are predominantly Asian themed and true to those design details. Most items are vintage, over 30 - 40 years back, and many are shabby in style but this is a generalisation and a visit to Soy is highly recommended to view everything that is on offer. Soy specialises in small buildings that are low prim and editable. Quite a few make good use of roof space with detailed railings, ladders and flat spaces to decorate. Inside, the houses and shops have intricate internal detailing of stairs, steps and inner rooms. They look good on Midday setting and wonderful in Windlight. All these are viewable on a platform above the main store, teleport from the front desk. There are also a row of gacha machines featuring sets from various past Events well worth playing on, and a small section dedicated to clothing and accessories - so don’t miss those. We caught up with Soyoy (who is extremely difficult to extricate from Soy’s building platform) one afternoon recently and gleaned the following. It proved very interesting! LTD: What made you choose Second Life® as a creative outlet for your 3D modeling addiction? Soyoy: I really like playing Second Life®, the same as everyone else! When I first began playing there were only sculpted prims around and so I used to enjoy shopping and exploring the best of all. After a while, I got bored, though. A few years later, I came back and found that Second Life® had received a power up whilst I’d been away. There were Mesh items and Windlight and I was impressed by the beautiful graphics and Mesh details because I remembered the seedy graphics of old! I started playing again and checked out the shopping Events such as Collabor88, The Arcade, TMD and Kustom9. Basically, I became a shopping addict and I would decorate my house with the items I bought from the Events on the small piece of land I owned. I liked how people could make their own favourite worlds quite freely on Second Life® but I never thought I’d be one of those perfect 3D modeling addicts at the time! LTD: What programs do you enjoy using for 3D modeling and did you learn this at college? Soyoy: I had originally majored in design and it was thought that 3D was unprofessional, so back then I had an aversion to 3D. When I touched Blender for the first time, I felt nothing but rejection for the program – it was like I was allergic to it! Fortunately, later on I met Cinema4D which had much in common with the Adobe design programs I was used to. The C4D interface was an instant match with me the first time I used it and I practiced by reading the tutorial books and any tutorials I could find on the web. Please note: Cinema4D made by Maxon has a student program where a proven student can use a limited version of the programs available in the range for a period of 18 months. After that time, the full version becomes available on a subscription basis, company support and training via Maxon’s website is included.

LTD: Soy has been in operation for over a year now and has become a popular brand! Did you have an overall plan for success when you first started? Or did you wait and see what would happen? Soyoy: Firstly I was anxious as I didn’t have any Second Life® business knowledge. All I knew was that there were many successful shops but it wasn’t easy to come by that success. I decided to make this avatar, Soyoy, for Soy because my avatar at the time was just for fun and I thought that I better cut off from it. I reasoned that it was better for me to concentrate on creation and not be diverted by former pursuits. But honestly, I did not think that Soy would grow so quickly! I had support from many people, I think, and I give thanks for that. LTD: We see that you make clothing and accessories as well as furniture and buildings. Do you have a favourite – clothing or furniture or buildings? Soyoy: I do sometimes make apparel because for me it’s a change of pace and can be refreshing. But I think that architecture and furniture is my main work. LTD: You make a lot of vintage and shabby/ repurposed furniture and buildings. What do you find fascinating about the vintage style? Soyoy: Well I do like the old items generally, but the main reason I work with vintage products is that Second Life® is like a ‘Realistic Parallel World’ to me and so I always try to make Soy’s products assume that reality. I do think that it’s possible to get a realistic feeling from dirt, if you like, from shabby, and that we can feel the time flow and perceive the history of an older piece of furniture or building when we look at it. That’s why many of my items are in the shabby style. But I know that some people don’t like such dirty decor and architecture and I also am not fond of grunge, so I prefer shabby. It’s like when you have an old leather sofa you feel comfortable with, my tastes are for the shabby style and when I am texturing a piece, I’m trying to represent that style. LTD: Do you think making gacha sets is a lot of hard work or do you find it rewarding? Soyoy: I set aside a lot of time when I make gacha, my schedule is much longer than usual. I might actually come to hate the theme as it draws to a close but when the gacha key image is finished I feel a real sense of accomplishment. I like to relax afterwards by making promotional ads for my products with Adobe Illustrator. LTD: What inspires you? Do you have a favourite period of history or a particular regional style that gives you design ideas? Does the natural world inspire you (we love the Gourd Tree floor lamp, by the way!).

I think our customer range is pretty wide, right across the board from Western to Asian. So if people from the West look at Soy’s products, I guess that they will feel a different culture and as for Asian customers, then it will feel familiar. I am interested in why customers purchase Soy items though I cannot really know how they use the products. But I am guessing that my customers are not so much the unrealistic ideologist types. Thank you for favouring our Gourd Tree Lamp! Yes, I think the natural forms are beautiful and the green of plants have a presence to them. I’d enjoy making more products where the style is based on a natural theme in the future. LTD: How much do you tailor your creations to fit a certain market? In other words, are you influenced by what your customers buy or would like you to make? Soyoy: If possible I want to avoid that. Sometimes I don’t do Events with hard themes for me, so I make what I want to make, basically. I make items according to the season or to a theme that fits in with the Soy ethos but just because I do that doesn’t mean that I will get good sales, however! LTD: This is difficult but do you have a really, really favourite piece that you’ve made? And what makes this your favourite? Soyoy: Hmm, yes, that’s difficult! But I think it has to be the Building [Showa]. That’s because it was the building I used for the main store when Soy first opened. Also it was the building for which I first made items to match, so it started off the creativity. Plus I love the commonplace buildings that are more than 30 years old. LTD: Is Soyoy a building platform hermit or do you go out sometimes? Soyoy: Yes, it’s true that I am always modeling like a hermit - hahah! I do sometimes like to stop and visit the local home depot to buy DIY materials and dog food. LTD: What are Soy’s plans for the future? Are you looking forward to ‘Second Life 2’ (Project Sansar®)? Will Soy still retain a presence in Second Life®? Soyoy: I think Soy has only just begun and to be honest, I’ve made no future plans. I do not know too much about Sansar® and I wonder if it means the closure of Second Life®. As long as Second Life® continues, I would like to Soy to be there. I hope Soy continues in the future, even if it’s on a different platform.

You can find more information on Soy. here: Soyoy: I get inspired by products and architecture of the 1960s – 1970s, around that time. Although I didn’t live through that period I somehow feel the nostalgia associated with it. Also, because I like to convey a realistic theme in my products, I haven’t chosen ancient pieces for inspiration; say for example those of more than a century ago. I’ll receive inspiration from what I’ve actually seen rather than that far back where I feel time slips away from my perception of the Soy product reality.

Skippy excitedly anticipates a special meal with his Papa and Mama at the start of a new year...

Magic is in the air, as the snow falls, as the home fills with the warmth of the fire, as the family comes together to celebrate light and love. Skippy adores this time of year because, not only does he get a long break from school, but he gets to share so much time with his Mama and Papa! What better way is there to celebrate the winter season than to grab this little boy’s hand and join him on his many adventures… • WRITER: SKIPPY BERESFORD • STYLIST: SKIPPY BERESFORD • PHOTOGRAPHER: SKIPPY BERESFORD

Taking unusual spaces and transforming them into a welcoming room... Many have looked at round rooms, and give up before they give it a try... a folly can be transferred into many useful spaces, it is only up to you to decide how you want it to be. Talented stylist Anala Royal converted this beautiful english folly by Apple Fall into a romantic space for two. This is just an idea of how to use your folly, it can be anything you wish. Tea room, a space to spend time alone and relax, a sauna, or just a playroom. You decide.

CI T IES: NEW TOK YO Cities are by nature composed of multitudinous amounts of housing, commerce and culture, often soaring skywards in silver tower blocks and carving out transport systems underground. Residents vary in their possessions, opportunities and ambitions. They can be barely scraping a living to upwardly mobile to super rich. Architectural and interior styling naturally reflects all of that and often comes straight out of a particular time period, for instance the Bauhaus movement of the early 20th century which was centred on the German cities of Weimar and Dessau. Go back further and you have the Arts & Crafts movement rising out of Britain in the 1880s, culminating later on in the Garden Cities of Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City. Then in the United States, the first movement to become a uniquely American genre was the Federal style of the 1780s, an example of which is the Massachusetts State House in Boston with its gilded dome roof. The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. is an example of uniform urbanism: the design of the capitol building was an ideal of the monumental city and neoclassicism. Our modern day city centres are just as likely to have a heart based on commerce as the municipal buildings of old. Shops, malls, markets, offices, local government and financial structures are as essential to us as our parks, museums, art galleries, places of learning and leisure facilities. Our power stations light up the cities so that we live artificially expanded lives as we race around innumerable streets and underground systems. If a river should snake its way through our cities we make good use of the ancient warehouses as we reclaim them for industrial style lofts and expensive waterfront properties. We often live as birds nesting amongst towering concrete edifices, wide eyed as we watch the edges of the city melt into suburbia. City living is often hectic, stressful and dog eat dog. In the other direction it can be an ideal place for achieving a particular way of life or founding a community based on lifestyle ideas or rising to a pinnacle of success fueled by barefaced ambition. And then there is also the city underclass genre with its seedy buildings, foreboding alleys and secret dens which can be dire, dangerous, mundane or exciting depending on your point of view. Within Second Life® there are city sims which seek to reflect various periods of architecture and creativity. Many are role playing communities. Check out the Second Life® Destination Guide. Our photography shows New Tokyo, a near future cyber city of neon lit skyscrapers offering many apartments. In addition there are arcades, cinemas and a run down junk yard, bowling alley, nightclubs and shops. It’s an excellent example of modern city living and well worth a visit. LINKS:

WITH OLYMPE

202

L OV E T O D E C O R AT E – N OV/ D E C 2 015

I join Olympe in a build created for this piece. The snow is falling outside the windows and the fire crackles as we sip hot cocoa. It is the picture of the ideal Christmas and leads to my first question. “Olympe. Would you describe for us your idyllic Christmas celebration?” “My Christmas somewhat resembles where we are now.” Olympe settles back on the couch. Her eyes take on a faraway look, as if living the scene. “I’m lucky to live at the foot of the mountains, in southwestern France. I will celebrate Christmas in a wooden cottage near a small snowy village, nestled among the mountains. There will be a large room to hold my family, including mom and my grandparents, and my best friends -- both real life and those known in Second Life. The decor is warm, with lots of antique furniture.” Her hand caresses the aged velvet sofa. “I like furniture and objects that have lived and have a soul. The fireplace is constantly lit to warm us. And there are wooden and natural Christmas decorations, lots of candles and fruit peel to scent the air. Everyone is happy and we sing and tell stories. “Christmas evening, we will have a delicious meal, simple but quality and prepared with love by all. And then we’ll open our gifts at the foot of the huge tree, decorated in red and white. Much later, we will go into the large room where all the beds have been set up and we all sleep close to each other, happy to be there together and to have lived this great moment of happiness together.” I cut pieces of the ubiquitous fruitcake and offer one to Olympe. “I have been taken with your work for as long as I have known you. You exhibited at The Rose Theatre Art Galleries many times when I was curator, once as the featured artist in the Grand Exhibition Hall. Even in your Facebook postings, it seems to me that beauty is central to who you are. I am curious how you came to be the person you are. What makes Olympe…Olympe?” She takes the offered plate and seems to come back into the present, even if reluctant to let go of the pleasant vision. “I had indeed this fabulous chance to exhibit at The Rose Theatre several times. It is an honor and a real happiness to exhibit in such a lavish and prestigious gallery. I remember my last exhibition in the main hall, my emotion and my surprise to see all my creations on the walls, the décor . . .. I am in wonder when my work is exhibited, but this is absolutely not the intention. I create for fun and to share this pleasure, regardless of medium, Flickr or Facebook. The day I discovered that I could create an image in ‘my way’ -- and I still clearly remember that day -- I was elated. This creativity allows me to translate my feelings, to release me. “Who I am? It is a difficult question. I would say I’m sensitive and I, although having a rather quiet appearance, am a rather strong personality. With time I see more precisely my faults and abilities. I try, without having the ambition to become better, to strive for more understanding of myself and others. I become more spontaneous, at ease. Perhaps in fact, I could summarize this by saying that I allow myself to be myself.” In the course of this interview, I find myself even more in awe of this complex woman. “What motivates you to create your beautiful art?” “When I see a place, an object, a detail that I like; of course I want to do a picture. I immediately see possible interpretations. I am sensitive to moods and colors. Almost instantly I like or I do not like what I see. I cannot create if I do not like it. It will be difficult for me because I have to force myself. To create is an absolute joy, during which time no longer exists -- only happiness!” I put another log on the fire and stir the embers as night settles a chill upon us. “What can you share about your artistic process? What tools do you use? Are you self-taught, or do you have an art education?” Taking another nibble of her cake, she replies. “I do not have an art education. My artistic culture is formed progressively, by visits to museums (my passion), art magazines and exhibitions. I enjoy discovering different trends and their connection with history and the context in which they are formed. I have a predilection for old paintings, sculptures, furniture, objects. My tools? Second Life wind/light settings, Photoshop, and my eyes!” “What are your thoughts on the state of the art scene in Second Life? How does it different from five years ago? What do you think the future holds for art in Second Life?” I ask. “There are many brilliant designers Second life, and the French are well represented with 3D creations, images or fractals. I think the arrival of mesh has somewhat changed artistic landscape by offering more opportunities and diversity. I deeply regret the disappearance of some sims or departures of some designers like Cherry Manga or Sextan Sheperd (Nemo). In terms of the future of art in Second Life, it will depend on its evolution. We are less likely to come into Second Life when the new world is open, but those who remain may be more selective in their choices, target their interests, and Art is one. In my gallery in Paris, I hold expositions of both real life and Second Life artists, and I try to find that balance that will sustain interest.”

“I will not give any advice because I think everyone is master of his own fate. I ‘ll just say, do what you want to do and do it with love and sincerity.” I gather up our dishes and carry them to the kitchen, calling over my shoulder as I go “We all look back at our life and wonder what would have happened had we turned left instead of right, said no instead of yes. If you could change one thing – just one – in your life, what would it be?” There is no hesitation in her answer. “I have a very serious profession: I am an attorney. If anything was possible, I would be in charge of a museum or an art gallery or a decorator.” “How do you think your trials in life have impacted your art?” “A friend once told me. ‘I know when things are going well with you and when they are not by observing your creations.’ She is not mistaken. It is difficult for me to say though. I do not think I have the necessary distance to say if my soul influences my creative choices, but it is probably true. “I would say I like to feel good, to create and move forward, in both worlds. In Second Life, I am pleased to be part of the great PARIS 1900 team. It is Paris reconstituted by passion and constantly evolving -- an inspiring and inspirational sim to visit. I was also fortunate to have had an art gallery in PARIS and was the curator of the Louvre Museum. There I was, surrounded again by history buffs, art and an inspired build. It’s important to feel good in a place, to be immersed. This is probably one of the reasons why I like to create.” We fall into an easy stillness as we warm ourselves with fresh hot cocoa, with just a tad of rum in it and listen to the silence of snowfall punctuated by sparks from the fire.

THE STEPS

While there are many beautiful Christmas trees in Second Life; you may enjoy creating one of your own. I started with the Botanical Fir Tree and Decorative Light Set. A little nudge to the edit sliders provided some additonal width. A wicker basket was a perfect anchor for my tree, however a tree stand or tree skirt would also provide a good foundation. The Marketplace is a wonderful source of ornaments and other decorative items. Look for things that are low prim and that can be sized and copied as you will need many of each. Decorate with items that are a reflection of you. I added candles, candy canes, pinecones, and berry branches. It was exciting to discover Convair’s Nutcracker in my inventory and I added several of them. To complete my design, I placed Half-Deer’s male cardinal atop the bow that crowns my tree and his mate sits upon a lower branch. I must admit that I am still looking for additonal things to add such as gingerbread cookies. It is truly a work in progress and I am looking forward to discovering some new creations that will be part of the the upcoming holiday season. There are many themes you might try. A white or silver tree with gold balls, starfish, shells, and sea urchins would be lovely in a tropical locale. Whatever you do, have fun designing and decorating your very own special tree.
