Visualizing the Future of the CM Department In August 2012, the Bert S. Turner Department of Construc on Management collaborated with faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners to develop a 5‐ year strategic plan to support the department’s vision to become a School of Construc on. The strategic plan included eight key strategies and twenty‐two ini a ves focusing on improving areas such as student learning, increasing re‐ search, and improving the department’s visibility. We are excited to announce that all twenty‐two ini a ves have been completed by the Department a year and half earlier than planned!

Dr. Charles Berryman, the CM Department Chair, led the strategic planning process from planning to implementa on.

Note from the Chair • 11

“In looking back on the last three and a half years, I am amazed at what the de‐ partment has accomplished,” Berryman said. “The Department has grown in all academic programs with over 900 students seeking some form of a CM degree, the largest student body in the department’s history. The Master of Science in Construc on Management was granted accredita on by the American Council for Construc on Educa on (ACCE). Addi onally, 68 curriculum changes were implemented and labs have been added to several courses to enhance student learning.”

CONSTRUCTION STUDENT ASSOCIATION Le er from the CSA President • 18

Addi onal highlighted accomplishments include: • Developed curriculum concentra ons in four industry areas: Industrial, Commercial, Residen al, and Highway. • Mapped course assessments to twenty student learning outcomes using the American Council for Construc on Educa on (ACCE) standards. • Integrated the OSHA Construc on Safety & Health Cer ficate and the LSU Dis nguished Communicator Cer ficate into the CM curriculum. • Launched an online Master of Science in Construc on Management program and an online Post Baccalaureate Cer ficate program. • Developed social media sites (Facebook, Twi er, and LinkedIn) and joint newsle ers to keep stakeholders up‐to‐ date. NEXT STEPS “Our accomplishments are significant, and our success did not happen by accident,” Berryman said. “It was the result of the hard work and dedica on of many people, including alumni and industry leaders.” Over the next few months, the faculty and staff will begin the next strategic planning cycle. A Strategic Planning Workshop is scheduled for the beginning of the spring semester to help refine the plan and set benchmarks to con nue the vision. In addi‐ on, we will con nue to communicate with alumni and key industry leaders to gather workforce needs and demands.

Brad Reese with MAPP Construc on spoke to CM 1011 students this spring.

Student Enhancement The Student Enhancement Commi ee is hard at work planning a terrific 2016‐2017 academic year. Plans for the upcoming Mentor/Mentee program are under way. Students can sign up to be paired with a mentor from a con‐ struc on discipline of their choice. Our CID Interview Panel Discussion team has also begun their quest to secure commitments for the guest panelist and choose topics of discussion best suited for sharpening students’ interview skills. Student field trips are off to an exci ng start with arrangements al‐ ready underway for several educa onal jobsite visits. The Student Enhance‐ ment Commi ee is looking forward to con nued success providing students with industry support and educa onal opportuni es throughout the fall 2016 semester.

Department Enhancement This year’s primary goal for the Department Enhancement Commi ee is to catalog and generate supplemental data on exis ng lab materials. The first step will be to catalog materials and exhibits currently on hand, and then so‐ licit feedback from the department on the crea on of supplemental data for instruc on and self‐guided modules. Once data is collected, the commi ee will then give feedback to cover any gaps that may be present in the materi‐ als on hand and address further requests and needs. In addi on, the com‐ mi ee will offer assistance in the transi on into new lab space.

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Alumni Chapter

Alumni Spotlight: Steven Fleury Steven Fleury, a 1992 graduate, has supported the LSU Construction Management De‐ partment for over 15 years. In 1998, he helped establish the LSU Construction Manage‐ ment Alumni Chapter, where he served as their second president. Additionally, he serves on the Construction Industry Advisory Council’s (CIAC) board and served as president of the board in 2011. Steven’s decision to pursue his Bachelor of Science in Construction degree from LSU was an easy one. As a teen, he worked with his uncle on construction projects. “Seeing the process of tearing something down and then rebuilding was very rewarding. Every job was different. I can still drive by houses that we remodeled in the eighties and remember my role on the project,” Steven said. When Steven moved on to college, he quickly noticed the value in his degree. “There was so much opportunity in the construction industry back when I graduated and still today. During my time at LSU, I creat‐ ed lasting contacts that have supported me throughout my career. And now as a member of the alumni group, I have developed some of the closest friends of my life. The best part is I now have an endless resource of construction knowledge from which to pull.” Now as the CM Alumni Chapter President and a CIAC Board Member, he is happy to give back to the department. He has spent countless hours promoting the value of LSU Construction Management and has worked tirelessly to improve the current program. “I want to help the LSU Construction Management Department to become the best in the coun‐ try,” he said. Steven has served on the Alumni Chapter’s Golf Tournament committee since 1999. Each year, proceeds from the event go directly to the students participating in the Associate Schools of Construction Region V Student Competition. “Students really need to get involved and to begin networking while in college. The competition teams and the Con‐ struction Student Association are a great start,” he said. “Students also need to work internships during their college years. When I was in college, everyone in the program had field experience and was working part‐time to make ends meet.” Throughout his career, Steven has had the opportunity to recruit and to train recent graduates. “I have been given the opportunity to evaluate my employees’ strengths and support their weakness so they can be prosperous,” he said. “An important piece of advice is ‘always be professional.’ As CM Alumni, we need to seize every opportunity to raise the level of professionalism and ethics in our industry.”

LSU Construc on Management

Note from the Chair Dr. Charles Berryman A er several years of hard work from faculty, staff, and industry, the Bert S. Turner Department of Construc on Management is maturing. We can now provide the stu‐ dents with a mul tude of op ons and the industry with tools to be er select their future employees. The Department has a lot to offer students: 

Bachelor of Science in Construc on Management  Post Baccalaureate Cer ficate in Construc on Management  Master of Science in Construc on Management  Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Science with a concentra on in Construc on Management The Bachelor of Science degree program, accredited by the American Council of Con‐ struc on Educa on (ACCE), has quickly become one of the best and most recognized CM undergraduate programs in the country. The degree has five Industry Emphasis Areas (IEA): Industrial, Commercial, Highway, Residen al, and Military. In addi on, the degree integrates two minors—Business Administra on and Technical Sales. Stu‐ dents can also receive a cer fica on as an Associate Constructor (AC) through the American Ins tute for Construc on (AIC) and can obtain an OSHA Construc on Safety & Health cer ficate by comple ng nine OSHA courses that are inte‐ grated within the CM curriculum. Moreover, we have cer fied CM instructors and classes so our students can be recog‐ nized as a LSU Dis nguished Communicator at gradua on. The Post Baccalaureate Cer ficate (PBC), offered 100% online, is the only one of its kind in the U.S. with over 140 ac ve online students. It was created by faculty and industry to help those interested in furthering their knowledge about con‐ struc on and to help individuals change careers into construc on. The PBC is also used for career change graduate stu‐ dents whose who want to enroll in our Master’s program. The Master of Science degree is now the largest master’s program in the College of Engineering. It is offered on campus and 100% online, and offers paths for Professionals (online), Execu ve (campus), and Researchers (campus). The Doctor of Philosophy offered on campus is focused on those wan ng to be future tenure track faculty members at major universi es at home or abroad. With over 900 ac ve students in these programs, construc on firms (especially those involved with the CIAC) now have the opportunity to be er select their future employees. When a company interviews one of our students, we encourage the company to inquire about the student’s involvement with the student compe ons, the Construc on Student Asso‐ cia on (CSA), LSU’s Dis nguished Communicator cer fica on, the OSHA Construc on Safety & Health cer ficate, and Sigma Lambda Chi (construc on honor society). In addi on, companies should ask the students if they have passed the AIC AC exam and the senior exit exam. Students who retain the knowledge gained through their me at LSU will easily pass both of these exams and will be in a great posi on to start working for any construc on firm. We have come a long way in a short me, and there is more to come. Thank you all for your support and hard work to get these programs to this level of excellence! GEAUX BUILD News • October 2016

LSU Construc on Management Faculty Research Highlight: Dr. Christofer Harper Dr. Christofer Harper is an assistant professor and holder of the McCollister Family Professorship, who joined the Bert S. Turner Department of Construction Management at LSU in August 2014. Before joining LSU, Dr. Harper worked in California, Colorado, Illinois, Hawaii, and Minnesota—where he gained over 13 years of construction related experience ranging from a plumbing subcontractor of residential and commercial pro‐ jects to a program manager/owner’s representative of hospitality, education, and medical projects. His industry experience covered many different types of projects, delivery methods, and contracting approaches. His responsibilities as a foreman, pro‐ ject manager, and program manager included leading, managing, and administering construction and maintenance projects in value from $100,000 to over $120 million. Dr. Harper received his B.S. (2005), M.S. (2007), and Ph.D. (2014) in civil engineering with a focus on construc on engineering and management from the University of Col‐ orado. He is a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Profes‐ sional (AP) and holds a Six‐Sigma Cer fica on in quan ta ve and qualita ve research sta s cs. He is an ac ve member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Construc on Research Coun‐ cil (CRC) of the ASCE, the Construc on Management Associa on of America (CMAA), and has served as the Com‐ mi ee Research Coordinator for the Transporta on Research Board (TRB) AFH10 Construc on Management Com‐ mi ee since 2015. His primary areas of research are in project delivery, contrac ng, project management and administra on, decision support systems, emerging technologies, and alterna ve energy. In par cular, Dr. Harper is a part of a na onal re‐ search team conduc ng a study in regards to the use of collabora ve partnering on highway construc on projects. Furthermore, Dr. Harper is also conduc ng research on project team integra on for regional public infrastructure projects. Ul mately, these two studies are providing Dr. Harper with resources and informa on to answer his defini ve research ques on: “How can project stakeholders form the “right” team for any type of construc on project?” Although this may seem as a difficult ques on to answer, many studies (including Dr. Harper’s current and previous studies) have realized that the people involved in a construc on project are the en es that can make a project successful or a failure. Forming a team of individuals that focuses on the project and is willing to work together is an ideal team, but the process for crea ng the “right” team is s ll a work in progress. Dr. Harper has also ventured into the realm of alternative energy re‐ search. An ongoing study is collecting data from sustainably‐built residen‐ tial homes in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. These residences have been built since Hurricane Katrina and include the use of multiple renew‐ able energy source such as Solar Power and Geothermal Heat Pump Sys‐ tems. Continued on next page...

GEAUX BUILD News • October 2016

LSU Construc on Management The focus of Dr. Harper’s study is collecting actual installation and energy use data from the residences for geothermal heat pump systems to compare to similar residences that are not using geothermal as an energy source. Construc on Student Associa on Le er from the CSA President The 2016 fall semester began in the midst of South Louisiana experiencing major rehabilitation and recovery from the historic (and unprecedented) flooding. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all of the CM friends who were affected. Now more than ever, is a great time to fulfill CSA’s goal of giving back to the community. The CSA looks forward to getting students involved in giving back to those who have promoted and helped us become such a successful student organization. Our organiza on is kicking off the year with an increase in student member‐ ship and student involvement. In the past three years, the number of mem‐ bers in the Construc on Student Associa on has almost doubled each year. Students are ge ng more involved by par cipa ng on compe on teams, volunteering to help with CIAC events, and engaging in site visits that lead to

construc on industry openings.

CSA’s primary goal is to expand career opportunities and encourage community involvement. Being a member of the CSA gives students a competitive advantage that allows them to excel in communicating and networking while preparing them for entry into the construction industry. There are many exciting events scheduled this semester to bring students and industry members together. From CSA meetings and socials, participating in the mentorship pro‐ gram, and Construction Interview Day, students are provided with unlimited resources to help prepare for what is to come after graduation. Early involvement is a major key and CSA encourages students to join during their freshman year. As they progress through their CM degree, students become more familiar with the industry they will soon enter. All that is required to become an amazing CSA member is a desire to learn, a posi ve mindset, and a passion for construc on management. Without a doubt, I believe the 2016‐2017 school year will be the best thus far! Ameenah Henderson, CSA President Contact Info: csa@ gers.lsu.edu
