FROM THE PRESIDENT It is with great excitement we deliver this inaugural issue of the new and improved Lone Star Magazine, a coveted member benefit containing our ongoing celebration of events, people and Porsches in the Lone Star Region. It has taken longer than expected and we believe it is worth the wait. With the efforts of our Lone Star Region volunteers, photographers and writers, we are committed to publishing the magazine on a quarterly basis. We welcome your contributions! Our next steps lead us to our Porsche Community Business Partners, with whom we are building symbiotic relationships with Porsche and other dealers, service providers, and after-market product providers. Lone Star Magazine is just one of the ways we help our partners reach prime customers and build relationships to enhance your Porsche lifestyle and ownership experience. Connect with our sponsors; let them know you found them here and on our website. In February, we hosted an event recognizing Lone Star Region members for their contributions and unwavering commitment, while also celebrating “Looking Forward, Going Forward” (article, p 22). The evening was filled with our passion of all things Porsche, and featured keynote speaker Darren Law of Flying Lizard Motorsports. Thank you for your ongoing support and trust in our leadership team. We look forward to growing an exciting and innovative club with diverse activities. -Steven Bukoski, LSRPCA President

In the mid-90s, I learned to drive stick on a 1963 356B. It belonged to my best friend’s dad and had about 300k on the clock. It still looked, drove and sounded like a dream. My friend and his dad are tall. I am not (see picture at right). Excited to learn stick, I ignored that my seat was positioned to accommodate 6’+ drivers. I had just mastered the old, sloppy transmission when we arrived at one of Houston’s only hills. Suddenly, I no longer had gravity (or seat belts) propping me up on the steering wheel and helping me reach the pedals. Rolling backwards, I couldn’t reach the clutch or brakes, let alone the shifter. Calamity was avoided thanks to a ditch. After my heart rate returned to normal and we realized no damage had been done to the 356, I decided any car that could provide this much adventure was the car for me. Over two decades and two Porsches later, it’s still an adventure. As great as these cars are, the stories of the people that own them are even better. I hope this magazine brings to light more of these great cars, people and stories from our Lone Star Region. -Vik Day, Editor and Publisher, Lone Star Magazine

A FAMILY AFFAIR D EC A D E S O F P O R S C H E PA S S I O N WRITER: EDWIN GOLDMAN PHOTO: SIDELINE SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY

My wife Nicole and I moved to Houston from The Netherlands in 2001 when I accepted a job offer from Halliburton/KBR to work here in their worldwide headquarters. The last car Nicole drove before we moved to the US was an all original 1972 Alfa Romeo 1600 Spyder in racing green. With a heavy heart, we left the car behind since Alfa didn’t maintain any dealerships in the US at the time. After a couple of months, Nicole stated “I want my sports car back!” We looked at all kinds of cars and narrowed it down first to European brands and then to German brands. We finally decided that the sports car of choice in the States was going to be a Porsche. We chose Porsche due to its combination of performance, looks and reliability. It’s practically the only brand that you can drive on the street, go to the track, change tire pressure and drive the same car back home again. In 2008, we purchased a Boxster with a manual transmission and became members of LSRPCA. Through the club, we got involved in Touring,

10

Social Dinners, Car Control School, Autocross and HPDEs. That is something we found unique about the LSRPCA – the club has a very diverse offering of activities and not a focal point on one area. After driving the Boxster for a while, we determined that a manual transmission in Houston traffic was not practical, so the Boxster was traded in for a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. We started doing Car Control School and progressed to HPDEs. After several of these, Nicole decided that the wear and tear was not ideal for her new Carrera S. Thus, the search started for another car that could be used as a dual-purpose daily and track driver. In the meantime, I had concluded that if I would ever get another sports car, I wanted to have a 911 Turbo. I searched until I found one that met with my criteria for sale in Austin. As time progressed, the 911 slowly morphed into more track-car (with a remapped engine, lowered suspension, roll bars, brakes) than daily driver. Deciding which modifications to perform was a result

of not only my experiences at the track, but also other members’ input (Ed note: It’s not the cars, it’s the people!). Having two sports cars wasn’t very convenient, so we traded the Carrera S for a Cayenne Hybrid. Shortly before I retired, we moved to a house with a 3-car garage. Having the extra space meant we had to fill it with another Porsche! Nicole designed her own Boxster GTS which was delivered a few months later. All was bliss. Then, a very unwelcome visitor named Hurricane Harvey changed that bliss into an eventful several months. Never figuring we would be in danger of flooding this far away from the coast, we were taken by surprise when the golf course we live on was completely flooded. At the time, I thought Nicole was being overly cautious when she moved the Boxster GTS out of the garage to higher ground. Two days later the house, the 911 Turbo, and the Cayenne Hybrid were covered in three feet of floodwater, muck and silt. It has now been more than a year since the hurricane and we are back in

our reconstructed home. The drowned Turbo has been replaced by a 1987 Porsche 911 Targa. Going retro means air-cooled and no nannies – a simpler time indeed! The Cayenne is now a sapphire-blue Macan. Our P-Car future is sure to include more road trips, tours, dinners, an occasional Porsche Parade... and hopefully a Rennsport or two!

BIG BEND A TEXAS- SIZED ROAD TRIP BY MEMBERS OF THE LSRPCA

The Lone Star State is huge. This land of cattle, oil fields and pickups seems even bigger from the seat of my 2015 Porsche GTS. Between the Rio Grande and New Mexico, this region features some of the best driving Texas has to offer. With tumbleweeds, world-class canyons, rare birds, starry nights and Old West folklore, Big Bend National Park is definitely worth more than a few visits. DAY 1: It was Friday morning, November 9th, when we left the house at 6:30 a.m. in the pouring rain and the temperature was a near- freezing 35°F. We were to meet others the Tour at Buc-ee’s in Waller, Texas. Surprisingly, we had only two cancellations due to the bad weather.

15

/ LO N E S TA R M A G A Z I N E /

At 8:30 a.m., we left Waller County in two groups. Group 1 had James Garrett as lead and David Foley as tail. Group 2 had George Bishop as lead and Edwin and I were tail. Group 2 was going to Fredericksburg first to pick up one of the tour attendees. We had a break in Luckenbach, Texas, an unincorporated community 13 miles from Fredericksburg in Southeastern Gillespie County. Lunch was in Junction, Texas at notable eatery Lum’s Bar-B-Que, followed by a 4-hour drive to Marathon. Late that afternoon, we safely arrived at the Gage Hotel in Marathon. This legendary 1927 hotel, located in the beautiful Texas mountain region, offers authentic laid-back luxury. Both driving groups sat down together for a fantastic dinner. We shared stories, got to know each other a little better, and revisited memories with those we hadn’t seen in awhile. George Bishop commented on Group 2’s experience, saying, “The weather was great throughout the trip. The drives were great, particularly the River Road, F.M. 170 16

from Lajitas to Presidio.” After dinner, we called it a day and headed to our rooms. DAY 2: We were back on the road at 9 a.m. sharp. When entering Big Bend National Park, one of our group cars suffered a pierced intercooler hose and lost coolant. With group effort (innovation, chewing gum and paper) we temporarily solved the problem, and were able to continue our journey through the unparalleled beauty of West Texas. We stayed that night in Terlingua, just a few exits past the end of the world. DAY 3: We were driving for about 30 minutes when a Ranger showed up while we were stopped to take in the view. “Who’s the leader of the pack?” he asked, sternly. George Bishop came forward, gave the Ranger a firm handshake, introduced himself and asked him what was the trouble. The Ranger explained that, unbeknownst to us, besides the entry fee, we should have paid another $5 per car to stop at the special viewpoints. After George apologized, the Ranger became very friendly and gave us a rundown on where we could find all the other special views. We

/ LO N E S TA R M A G A Z I N E /

stopped at Boquillas, now known as the Rio Grande Village. It is along the Rio Grande River and runs through Canyon de Santa Elena, Mexico on one side and Big Bend National Park, USA on the other. The park spans 1,252 total square miles. About 75 million years ago, a 40-mile-wide trough sank along fault lines, which resulted in the Santa Elana Canyon Cliffs and the Sierra del Carmen. Later that afternoon, we visited one of the largest historic adobe structures in Texas at Fort Leaton, which provided a glimpse of 19th century life at a fortified trading post on the USA – Mexico border. Another fabulous day was almost over as we continued on to our final stop, Marfa, Texas. Warner Bros. came

to Marfa and made this hotel their headquarters for the filming of the 1956 classic movie Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean. We booked the Elizabeth Taylor Suite in Hotel Paisano, in the heart of Marfa. After a very entertaining late dinner with some members of Group 2, we decided to turn in. DAY 4: We enjoyed a memorable breakfast at Hotel Saint George, a contemporary hotel that made Conde Nast Traveler’s 2017 Hot List. We then left Marfa for the long return trip. With West Texas in the rear view, we drank in the fading landscape of Big Bend National Park. The fantastic driving on great roads, unique hotels, memorable meals, historic towns and stunning scenery made it a trip worthy of any Porsche driver’s bucket list.

BACK TO THE TRACK LSRPCA AUTOCROSS RACING

Autocross events are low cost, low risk, low wearand-tear and HIGH on fun!” -Chris D’Agnolo

S TO RY: C H R I S D ’A G N O LO

P H OTO S : DAV I D L E U N G

My friend - who considers himself a car guy - and I were discussing, well, cars. He told me about performance upgrades he’d been doing to his daily driver when he said, “Man, I wish there was someplace that I could take my car to really see what it can do!” Of course, as chief driving instructor for LSRPCA autocross, I couldn’t say enough about the sport. I explained to him that autocross (pylon racing) is exactly that venue! He tried it and soon saw for himself what I’ve preached to so many folks: autocross events are (relatively) low cost, low risk, low wear-and-tear and - most importantly- HIGH on fun! He ended up being a dedicated (and talented) autocrosser for many years! And of course, we had a ton of fun. One of the downsides of modern high-performance cars is that they are so “high-performance,” one can never really know their capabilities in the real world. It’s just not fun nor exciting to drive a GT3 at 80 mph all day long. However, these same cars, driven at an autocross event, can be very rewarding and fun. As for being relatively low-risk, no track insurance is necessary and the courses are designed with safety as the top priority, followed closely by “fun factor.” This can be a really good thing

when the car being driven is a highdollar Porsche! Each car is competing against the clock and compared to other (similar) cars in class. LSRPCA autocross racing is heavy on community and fun, and friendly competition with the other members can inspire you to consider certain modifications or push your limits. An autocross weekend starts with a Saturday LSRPCA Car Control School session, where you’ll likely discover that the capabilities of your car far exceed your expectations or experience. The following day (this being Texas, weather permitting) you will get the opportunity to utilize those capabilities at a higher level than you have previously. As time goes on, you can continue honing your skills indefinitely, as the courses are always different, and there’s always a little more you can get out of your car with applying learned methods and practice. Perfection is the elusive goal! Come and chase it with us. Bring a friend…or come and make a bunch of new friends at the next event. Whether you want to race competitively, brush up on your driving skills for fun, or simply spectate, our members are always welcome. See you at the track!

HARVEY MUSHMAN’S SECRET PORSCHE SHOP W H E R E T H E D E V O T E D G AT H E R WRITER: DOUG CARROLL

Tucked away in a small residential community in Southwest Houston lies the unexpected gem of the Houston Porsche scene. Behind a low-slung house sits two unassuming, but large, garages. It is private property and known only to a lucky few. Inside, these garages are packed with memorabilia acquired from racing Porsches for over 40 years. If you are lucky enough to have been invited to this secret race shop by owner, racer and provocateur Harvey Mushman, you’ll find a motley assortment of raceready, under-maintenance, and project cars being prepped for the next adventure. Mushman has lived a fascinating life: the trophies, memories and accoutrements of which are scattered about the garage; it is a veritable treasure trove to excite the racing fan and Porsche fanatic inside us all. Harvey Mushman’s Secret Shop has spawned three trips to the podium in class in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, as well as an SCCA road racing national championship in E Production, amongst many motorsports wins. More recently, the shop has been the home of the PCA E Class track record holder for the Circuit of the Americas…a smoking lap of 2:31.632 in a 210 horsepower 1974 911 Carrera (Ed. note: this issue’s Cover Car)! Air-cooled 911 motors are dropped and replaced with regularity here,

20

and seeing a torsion-bar car being cornerweighted and aligned with simple strings is a common sight. The shop sees its fair share of brake jobs, suspension refurbishments, exhaust replacements and engine teardowns. The concrete under the small lift has the distinct patina of countless spills – the mark of years of air-cooled Porsches dumping their 10 quarts of scalding hot oil onto the pavement below (and sometimes onto the hapless amateur mechanic as well). Inside the tool boxes, you can find any tool known to racing, from high-precision dial calipers and torque wrenches with settings in the inch-pounds, to a drawer full of various hammers bearing the battle scars of many a stubborn part that would not break free. While the shop does see serious mechanical work on a weekly basis, you’ll also find a scraggly group of car enthusiasts sharing a cold beer and pizza while telling stories of races gone by and track day secrets. Keystone Light is a staple here for its price tag above all else. After all, those race parts aren’t cheap, and running in the front takes as much determination as it does dollars. As Harvey likes to say “When you need a beer real bad, it’s a real bad beer.” Hey, saved beer money can be spent on more track time.

“As an impressionable six-year-old, I saw a magazine photo with a Porsche 906 Langheck racing at night – in the rain. I then knew what my special purpose was…” - Harvey Mushman 21

LOOKING FORWARD, GOING FORWARD LSRPCA 2018 AWARDS EVENT

photos: courtesy of LSRPCA

On February 9th, 2019 at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, LSRPCA held an awards ceremony to celebrate 2018 region accomplishments and to recognize member contributions. Presenters looked ahead to the 2019 plans and the changing world of the Porsche brand and culture. Two members of the local Porsche community were honored at the event for their longtime commitment and contributions: Rodger Gay, for being responsible for more Lone Star Region PCA members joining the region, and David Leung, for his photographic documentation of LSRPCA events. An amazing raffle of very special Porsche items rounded out the incredible evening. Several LSRPCA-appointed speakers

22

presented on notable events and what’s in store for LSRPCA members in 2019. “We are now focusing on the future and our relationship with the Porsche community,” said LSRPCA President Steven Bukoski. “This direction aligns with the purpose of Lone Star Region: Building symbiotic relationships with the Porsche community; building an exciting and innovative club with diverse activities, where members can share their passion; building membership because our strength comes from members who volunteer their time to the betterment of our club and community.” 2019 Member at Large Hector Martinez said, “I have been working overtime to build our relationships with our Porsche community business partners.” Tom Giertz and Kathy Kendall spoke about the many activities and events available to members. Keynote speaker Darren Law, of Flying Lizard Motorsports, gave insight into Porsche culture’s progression at large. “Throughout my years in the industry, both as a driver in a factory-supported program, and as a team owner, I have watched Porsche evolve. I have seen the development of the various racing vehicles first-hand as well as changes in their... support for customer racing and the racing series.” LSRPCA looks forward to what our future holds with great anticipation.

We are focusing on the future... building an exciting and innovative club with diverse activities, where members can share their passion.” -LSRPCA President Steven Bukoski
