Environmental Management System rams Prog

Over the past 20 years, LSG Sky Chefs has developed what is today considered the in-flight service industry’s most structured and expansive approach to Environmental Care. This approach permeates everything we do to ensure wide-scale awareness and continuous improvement throughout our worldwide organization. It is also designed to meet our customer and shareholders’ environmental expectations.

Chief Operating Officer. We are happy to provide customers and other key stakeholders with descriptions of these regional programs. Our aim is to have dedicated environmental managers across our different business areas, in order to also promote increased collaboration with other strategic corporate functions.

Managers and Programs We have appointed an individual within each region who is responsible for the environmental program in that particular area. This Regional Environmental Manager (REM) works with his/her Regional Management Team and our Corporate Environmental Manager to establish and monitor regional environmental programs. These are customized according to local requirements and are signed by the respective Regional

The results are expected mid-2013. n Annual Report A We communicate our progress to our customers and the market on a yearly basis. anagement Review M Our Executive Board fully supports the environmental responsibility program and carries out regular reviews to develop it further.

Sustainability makes sense Contributing to the protection of our environment and behaving sustainably are important aspects of LSG Sky Chefs’ corporate social responsibility. Sustainability does not only refer to caring for the environment, of course. It also entails meeting our social responsibilities. This includes how we treat our employees and how our business is managed, so that we can remain a stable and successful corporate citizen. For organizations in the global aviation industry, especially, environmental responsibility is much more than a moral obligation – it’s a means to promote positive change and further improvements. As passengers and the general public become more environmentally conscious, airlines and suppliers can improve both their image and passenger satisfaction levels by acting more responsibly. In fact, they can also differentiate themselves from competitors by promoting their environmental activities. Moreover, there are also economic benefits to being green. For example, airlines can curtail fuel consumption and produce less CO2 emissions. With this in mind, LSG Sky Chefs has developed a host of smart, lightweight and environmentally-friendly solutions.

Caring about the Environment – Measuring Performance In order to measure our progress, we have defined a set of stringent Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for energy, water and waste. All wholly-owned LSG Sky Chefs Customer Service Centers (CSCs) worldwide collate this information on an annual basis. Our Corporate Environmental Manager, who is responsible for steering this global initiative, works closely with these figures in order to design and implement the measures necessary to meet the below targets.

Caring about the Environment Based on our Environmental Policy, we have implemented a structured methodology that enables us to continuously measure our performance and exchange best practices. These cover a wide array of areas including energy, water and waste reduction, plus product innovation. Environmental Audits are now a continuous element in our environmental management system. Initiatives like the global LSG Sky Chefs’ Innovation Award and Product Innovations are other areas where we continuously contribute to environmental sustainability.

Environmental Care on a Local Level Since the establishment of our global Environmental Management System in 2008, LSG Sky Chefs remains committed to continuous improvements in its environmental sustainability programs. In the past year, dedicated Customer Service Center Environmental Managers have been appointed at select locations, in order to enhance our units’ environmental performance.

task force at their respective facilities over the next few years. In close collaboration with our Regional Environmental Managers, the CEMs will also oversee the establishment of their CSC’s environmental vision, the implementation of corresponding projects and an exchange of best practices within their region, and with corporate functions.

In addition to their current responsibilities, the CEMs will focus on developing an environmental

Moreover, as part of our Continuous Improvement Process, new environmental

programs are being constantly introduced. After broad success in reaching regionally set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in 2011, new KPIs were introduced in 2012 to measure Energy per Meal, Waste per Meal and Recycled Waste as a percentage of Total Waste. Alongside this innovative approach, an effort has been made to integrate our units’ KPI reporting systems, increase the number of environmental audits and thus further strengthen the backbone of our Environmental Management System.

New Ideas: LED Lighting With an increased emphasis on sustainability in the airline industry, this year we incorporated a range of LED light solutions for our newlyopened facility at Vilnius Airport, Lithuania aimed at minimizing energy use and lowering maintenance cycles. Since it was installed, the new lighting scheme has contributed positively to our environmental credentials and helped us save costs.

When building the new facility, the engineering team chose LED lights in order to provide comfortable and sufficient lighting conditions for all employees. In comparison with other commonly used lighting technologies, this solution offers significant energy savings. Within the factory's production and refrigeration areas, for example, special LED lights were installed for their exceptionally long shelf life of 50,000 hours. By using

New Products: Lightweight Porcelain As part of our continued effort to reduce weight onboard, a series of lightweight products were developed. Our lightweight porcelain series, for example, was born from a need for weight savings combined with a trend towards using more elegant shapes. Each piece was designed and engineered with the end goal of having a lower material weight, while upholding the strength, durability, and look of traditional hard porcelain. To accomplish this, a strengthening agent was used to make the lightweight items able to withstand the similar impact of traditional porcelain. In addition, a hard, scratch-resistant

surface makes the lightweight porcelain wellsuited for industrial catering, however with the look and feel of fine bone china. After several years of successful commercial operations, lightweight porcelain is increasingly seen as a best practice of the future. What started as a material experiment has turned into a viable product range, with weight savings of up to 25 percent. Furthermore, by using lightweight porcelain on an A380, an airline can save up to 22 tons of fuel per year, which translates to about 69 tons of CO2 emissions savings annually.

LED lights throughout the entire facility, 3.6 tons of CO2 emissions could be saved annually, the equivalent of planting approximately 70* trees per year, or 840 trees over a 12 year period. *Conversion factor 0.124 kg CO2/KWh Eco-Invent database Lithuania - could change with region. 3,7 tons yearly avoided of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, is equivalent to planting 70 trees yearly or 840 trees in 12 years of operation. Calculation assumption equals to 1 tree = 55kW/year.
