HOW ENGLISH INTERACTS WITH SRI LANKANS English is the language which most people use to communicate in every nook and corner of the world, today. Sri Lanka too is no exception. Though the state’s official language is Sinhala the reality is that one can hardly survive without English. Not only for the matters related to international affairs but also for those of internal importance, English has become a part and parcel tool. The government contributes to produce an English literate student generation in the country. Yet, the outcome is not on par with the endeavours exerted. Subsequent to the secondary education being accomplished, most Sri Lankan youth are exposed to the job market whereas a comparatively lesser number pursue their higher education in universities. Whichever the case may be, insufficient knolwdge in English hampers their progress drastically. This is a salient characteristic among the staff in the public and the private sector organizations in Sri Lanka, at present. Many employees fulfilling professional qualifications have stagnated in their current positions for years due to this very reason. This paves the way for their job dissatisfaction. Dissatisfaction relating to one’s employment results in demotivation which in return, severely affects the organization’s health. The situation with regard to most of the universities in Sri Lanka too, in this respect is the same. Lack of knoweldge in English hampers the future endeavours of the almuni

who pass out with flying colours in their relevant spheres. Further, those graduates who pursue their advanced education subsequently find it difficult to fulfil the part requirments of their Masters’ Degrees and Ph.Ds. Therefore, they have to seek assistance of an adept in English language to get their dissertations accomplished. This dependable mentality creates inferiority complex in them which is detrimental to their personal pride. Such alumni who will become professionals in the managerial level still pay for their sins. Though they manage with their communication using technical words relating to their own scopes they draw a blank when confronted with an oral or a written presentation in English. The parents in general show much concern for English today. It is the dream of every parent to hear that his or her child possesses a good knowledge in the language. They spend lots of money to make their children English literate. With this dream in mind, they send their children to the teachers following the trend. Unfortunately, yet they do not have a yardstick or a norm to assess the knowledge and expertise possesed by those teachers. The so called teachers do not impart the children the required knowledge other than what the text books they use emphasize. Such knowledge is not suffice for them to communicate in English confidently. Therefore, when the parents understand the money they have spent for the purpose is in vain, they have passed the point of no return.

THE PREDICAMENT English education being the topmost concern of L&S Education among many other scopes, it determined to address the above problem. For this purpose, our attention was mainly focused on the system of English education prevailing in the country. When analyzed, it was revealed that the system needed some radical changes. Above all, we found that the attitude with which English language is looked at by Sri Lankans in general, had to be changed. The concept ‘Let us learn English in our way’ initiated by the Department of Education sometime ago has to be done away with. Since English is meant to use as per the manner it was

taught us by those who use it as their native language, we being Sri Lankans cannot have a different version adopted for our purpose. Furthermore, we daresay teaching with extensive paper work and memorizing is an obsolescent practice. Giving the student situational based, ready made sentences for learning by heart is not practical too. Since there are innumerous situations the learner draws a blank when he has to deal with one for which ready made sentences were not provided him by the teacher.

OUR ROLE To remedy this problem, L&S Education has designed a system to teach English based on the concept ‘The mind can retain what it is fed effortlessly too’. The system is so simple that it can be applied to learners from kindergarten to the professionals alike. This creative, innovative but simple system has been time tested. We boast of 100 % satisfactory feed back from the participants representing multinational and local organizations in Sri Lanka and also students who were enlightened using this method.

EDUCATION – ENGLISH L&S Creations introduces courses in English with a difference. These courses are exclusively designed with a blend of psychology. The participants in these courses are exonerated from obsolescent burdens that have existed from the time immemorial. They are guaranteed a learning at ease of mind with no memorizing, no extensive writing and no lesson materials. The courses are conducted by a qualified professional with teaching experience well over a decade.

eDUCATIONAL sUPPORT

Tongue twisters are sentences which contain sets of words giving sounds difficult to pronounce right through when reading at a stretch. (Though we do not show much concern these tongue twisters are available in Sinhala too.) ‘Chooti teacherge chooti torch eka.’ is one such out of many. Reading these tongue twisters aloud by way of an exercise helps improve proper speech. It is said that many of the radio commentators,

news readers, vocalists and stage artists practise tongue twisters to make their words flow smoother, prior to commencement of the performances. Further the tongue twisters are used for testing the suitability of dentures and for screening applicants for broadcasting positions. Tongue twisters are included in school text books too. Lalantha with the collaboration of Kotmale FM had made arrangements to produce a CD containing tongue twisters with a view to ease the task of learning them.
