What to do for an encore? Lenoir-Rhyne nearly reached the top of the football world in 2013, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Championship game before coming up short to Northwest Missouri State. Although it’s hard for anybody to duplicate that type of success, the Bears appear to be in strong position to at least make another run. A deeper look inside the program shows a team which has slowly gotten better over time, building depth with each passing season as evidence by its six straight years of improvement. The Bears (13-2), the three-time defending South Atlantic Conference Champions, return plenty of starters – 18 to be exact – including several All-Americans. Lenoir-Rhyne, the second-ranked team in the country last year, should be in good hands under new Head Coach Ian Shields. The five-year offensive coordinator at Army (2009-13) inherits a team with a lot of experience and the combination of a new coaching staff and an established program should make for another exciting year in 2014 for the Bears.

Offense

The Bears’ offense rose to new heights last fall, setting an NCAA all-time singleseason record for rushing yards (5,563) and leading the nation in rush offense (370.9 ypg) for the second time in four years. A lot of credit can be given to the men up front. Lenoir-Rhyne had one of its best offensive lines in school history last year but will have to replace three starters: Parker Murray, Ben Carrion and first-team all-league performer Zack Bunn. However, the Bears do welcome back All-American senior Joe Ray (Atlanta, Ga.). Ray won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in 2013, given annually to the top offensive lineman in the South Atlantic Conference. Ray, the team’s starting right tackle, will be asked to anchor a unit which has potential but is in the middle of transition. Sophomore Jacob Slagle (Sharpsburg, Ga.) looks to take over the left tackle spot. Slagle filled in admirably when Ray went down with injury in a 42-14 win over West Chester in the national semifinals last year.

The Bears will be led by senior quarterback Miles Freeman, who finished with 968 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing and 632 yards and six scores passing in 2013.

The other returning starter for the Bears is senior left guard Jim Bayer (Lawrenceville, Ga.). Bayer is entering his third year as a starter and could challenge for all-league accolades. The Bears will look to junior Dale Howard (Baxley, Ga.) to take over center duties while right guard should be in the hands of senior Matt Villanti (Katy, Texas), a transfer from Army. Senior quarterback Miles Freeman (Sacramento, Calif.) is expected to pick up where he left off last year before a leg injury ended his season in early November. Freeman was leading the team in rushing yards (107.6 ypg) to go along with 632 yards passing and 17 total touchdowns before the injury. Freeman was playing as well as anybody in the conference and looks to end his career on a high note. Backing up Freeman is talented redshirt freshman Evin Sims (Greenwood, S.C.). Lenoir-Rhyne returns a stable of running backs led by senior tailback Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.) and senior fullback Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.). Spears, a two-time First-Team All-SAC honoree (2012-13), has led the squad in rushing yards the last two seasons includ-

ing a 984-yard, seven-touchdown performance last fall. Spears, the conference champion in the 100-meter dash in outdoor track and field, also averaged 8.8 yards per carry and caught 10 passes for 184 yards and two scores. Playing opposite Spears at the other halfback spot should be junior Michael Patrick (Atlanta, Ga.), who came on strong last season and finished with 428 yards on the ground and five scores. As a full-time starter now, Patrick’s numbers should undoubtedly increase. Sophomore James Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) and senior Kevin Eckel (Haverford, Pa.) are penciled in as back-ups at tailback entering fall camp. At his fullback position, Whitaker has earned All-American honors the last two years. Whitaker rushed for 912 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2013 and continues to be one of the most productive players the Bears have had recently. Senior Chris Robinson (Newnan, Ga.) is a strong reserve at fullback. Robinson has 621 yards rushing and eight touchdowns so far in his career. Junior Greyson Wells (West Jefferson, N.C.) emerged as the team’s go-to receiver last fall, finishing with 19 receptions for 410 yards and seven touchdown catches. Senior Greg Baker (Woodbine, Ga.) is another viable option for the Bears. Baker totaled nine catches for 168 yards in 2013. Other wideouts looking to get in the mix are sophomore Victor Brannan (Powder Springs, Ga.) and junior Patrick Rendleman (Lincolnton, N.C.).

2014 2007 Preview (cont.) Defense

Lenoir-Rhyne has developed one of the best defenses in not only the conference but the region and nation as well. The Bears should be able to maintain that high level of play this year with the return of several key players including a couple of All-Americans. In the secondary, the Bears must replace the SAC Defensive Player Of The Year in 2013 – free safety All-American Michael Green – and two-time first-team all-league honoree Myer Nolan. At safety, Lenoir-Rhyne has several position battles entering camp. Either junior Chris Shaffer (Charlotte, N.C.), an Appalachian State transfer, or sophomore Marcus Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) will get the nod at strong safety. At the free safety spot, the Bears will look at either sophomore C.J. Cody (Powder Springs, Ga.) or redshirt freshman Rashad Mathis (Valdosta, Ga.). Cody totaled 12 takedowns last season. The Bears appear to be in good hands at cornerback with the return of seniors O’neil Blake (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Joe Anderson (Lilburn, Ga.), a pair of preseason all-league honorees. Blake, a second-team all-league performer in 2013, totaled 76 tackles, 12 pass break-ups and three picks last year while Anderson totaled 78 takedowns and an interception. The linebackers will be anchored by senior Tanner Botts (Lawrenceville, Ga.). A 2013 All-American, Tanner Botts led the team once again in tackles with 134 and will be joined by senior Tyler Botts (Lawrenceville, Ga.) or junior Stephen Amoah (Charlotte, N.C.) on the inside. Tyler Botts had 63 tackles and two fumble recoveries while Amoah tallied 60 takedowns last fall. Another young player who could be added to a growing list of outstanding defenders for the Bears is sophomore outside linebacker Rodney Singleton (Hawthorne, Fla.). Singleton finished with 70 tackles in 2013 and was named the SAC Defensive Freshman Of The Year. Joining Singleton on the outside is junior linebacker Placid Ajoku (Powder Springs, Ga.). Ajoku had four sacks last season and appears ready to take over as a full-time starter. Senior All-American Blake Baker (Bethlehem, N.C.) spearheads the unit up

front. At the defensive tackle spot, Baker had a record-breaking season last year with 14.5 sacks, 56 tackles and 22 takedowns for a loss. Sophomore Chris Green (Albany, Ga.) showed a lot of potential last year and made several key plays down the stretch after taking over at the nose guard spot for the injured Jimmy Long. Green had 28 tackles and five sacks and he’s looking for a breakout year as well. Junior Lendre Sparrow (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) will man the defensive end position after moving from outside linebacker. Sparrow totaled 48 tackles and five sacks in 2013. One of the top reserves on the defensive line is junior Adrian Hart (Stafford, Va.). Hart finished with 12 takedowns and provides depth for the Bears.

Lenoir-Rhyne will need to rebuild part of its special teams with the loss of a pair of All-Americans: kicker Zach Neumann and Green, the Bears’ all-time leading punt return man. However, senior Justin Powell (Connelly Springs, N.C.) has seen action over the past two years and should be able to step in without the Bears missing a beat. Senior William Griffith (Havelock, N.C.) looks to replace Green while Spears returns to give Lenoir-Rhyne one of the best kickoff return men in the league. Spears has returned a touchdown for a score each of the past two seasons and averaged 23.2 yards per return in 2013. Sophomore Austin Barker (Low Gap, N.C.) was a pleasant surprise for LenoirRhyne in his first year as punter, averaging 38.9 yards per kick. Expect Barker to continue to get better with each passing season.

Schedule

The 2014 schedule doesn’t do the Bears any favors but that’s what you might expect for the national finalists. Some of the best teams on the slate will face the Bears on their home turf. After opening at home against Point (Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m.), Lenoir-Rhyne ventures to Ettrick, Va., to take on Virginia State. The Trojans finished 9-1 on the year and claimed the CIAA Northern Division Championship (Sept. 13 at 2:00 p.m.). Lenoir-Rhyne opens SAC play on Saturday, September 20, at 1:30 p.m., on the road versus Wingate. Lenoir-Rhyne also plays a pair of league playoff teams away from home: Newberry (October 18 at 4:00 p.m.) and CarsonNewman (November 1 at 1:00 p.m.). The Wolves and the Eagles finished 9-3 and 10-3, respectively, last year while CarsonNewman and Lenoir-Rhyne have played four times in the past two seasons. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Tusculum on Family Weekend (Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m.), North Greenville on Homecoming (Oct. 11 at 2:00 p.m.), Mars Hill (Oct. 25 at 2:00 p.m.) and long-time rival Catawba (Nov. 15 at 2:00 p.m.) in the regular season finale. Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba have met 93 times with the Indians holding a 46-43-4 advantage. However, the Bears have taken five straight games in the series.

2013 2006 Season Highlights 2013-14 South Atlantic Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll

Overview

The Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team had one of its best seasons in school history in 2013. The Bears finished the year with a record of 13-2 including a 7-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference play and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship game on December 21, 2013, in Florence, Ala. However, the Bears came up short to undefeated Northwest Missouri State, 43-28. Lenoir-Rhyne also won its third straight league championship. In addition, the Bears set a school single-season record for wins in a season and advanced to the national championship for the fourth time in program history. As a member of NAIA, Lenoir-Rhyne earned a berth in the title game in 1959, 1960 and 1962 and won the ’60 championship.

All-Americans

Thanks to their record-breaking success last year, seven Bears earned All-American honors by several different publications. They were defensive lineman Blake Baker (Bethlehem, N.C.), linebacker Tanner Botts (Lawrenceville, Ga.), defensive back Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.), defensive lineman Jimmy Long (Gainesville, Va.), placekicker Zach Neumann (Mechanicsville, Md.), offensive lineman Joe Ray (Atlanta, Ga.) and fullback Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.). For 2014, Baker, Botts, Ray and Whitaker are returning

Rushing Prowess Continues

Lenoir-Rhyne rushed for the most yards in NCAA single-season history – 5,563 – last year. The Bears led the nation in rushing (370.9) for the second time in four seasons in 2013. The Bears also finished first in D-II in rushing in 2010 at just over 310 yards per contest. Lenoir-Rhyne also holds the all-time collegiate record for rushing yards in a game – 837 – in a 69-14 victory over Davidson in 1975.

Farewell To Michael Green

Michael Green (2009, 2011-13) leaves LenoirRhyne as one of the best all-around players in school history. Green, a two-time All-American (2011, 2013), was named the 2013 SAC Defensive Player Of The Year and the 2013-14 SAC Male Athlete Of The Year. Green holds numerous school records including: single-season punt (432) and interception (256) return yards and career punt (901) and interception (429) return yards. Green also tallied 274 tackles, 18 interceptions, seven fumble returns and six touchdowns for his career.

Michael Green, a two-time All-American (2011 and 2013), was named the 2013 South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player Of The Year.

Home, Sweet Home

Lenoir-Rhyne continued its dominance at Moretz Stadium in 2013. The Bears are 20-1 in their last 21 contests at home dating back to the 2010 season and has won 13 straight games versus SAC foes at Moretz Stadium.
