Fall into Greatness: LRMA Celebrates 15 Years pays tribute to the lasting legacy of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art while we look towards the future with great expectations. Following our summer exhibition, Paradise Found, this is the second installment in a series that celebrates the donors, artists and community who helped build the foundation of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art over the course of fifteen years. A title layered in meaning, Fall into Greatness is inspired by all that constitutes the autumn season. It also means to be immersed in truly great things. Follow our fifteen-year journey and bask in the splendor of celebrated artists such as Pablo Picasso, George Inness, Sr., Christopher Still, Dale Chihuly and many more. Highlighting iconic works from the collection, new acquisitions are unveiled, as well as never-before-seen works. We also explore the unique relationship LRMA has with Tampa Bay Area artists as we find out what inspires the artists in our collection.

WORKS ON PAPER GALLERY

Fall into Greatness: Contemporary Prints from the Jim and Martha Sweeny Collection Works on Paper Gallery OCTOBER 8 – DECEMBER 30, 2017

Since establishing the Lothar and Mildred Uhl Works on Paper Gallery, LRMA’s collection of contemporary prints has grown exponentially. Marking LRMA’s fifteen-year anniversary, we unveil a recent acquisition of fourteen fine art prints from Jim and Martha Sweeny, who were long-time friends of Lothar Uhl and fellow print collectors. This donation includes a cross-section of major contemporary printmakers including Louisa Chase, Donald Sultan, Brad Davis, Terry Winters, Hung Liu, Howardena Pindell and Thornton Dial. The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art is honored to receive such a significant collection of prints and mixed media works by notable contemporary artists, including well-known African-American artists.

Elemental: Fine Crafts from the Collection is a new installation of sculptural works from the permanent collection based on the classical elements of the ancient Chinese tradition: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These elements were used for describing interactions and relationships between phenomena. The interrelationship of these classical elements is explored through contemporary fine craft mediums including jewelry, decorative arts, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and paper. This exhibition is an amalgam of ancient raw materials and modern ingenuity, in which artists stretch the boundaries of earth’s elements in metal, wood, clay, stone, glass and other natural media.

Habits & Habitats: Inside the Artist’s Studio with Abraham Rattner Center Gallery OCTOBER 8, 2017 – APRIL 15, 2018

Habits & Habitats is a new exhibition series that provides insights into the perspectives, daily habits, and private spaces of featured artists. This series is intended to create a personal connection to the audience by touching on particular parts of an artist’s life and thought process for a deeper level of understanding. Inside the Artist’s Studio with Abraham Rattner is the second installment of the Habits & Habitats series, which offers a glimpse into the artist’s work space and artistic process. Through an installation of Rattner’s original studio furniture, vintage photographs, personal letters and journals, take a peek inside his studios in Paris and New York. On view for the first time, original drawings and studies from the LRMA archives shed light on Rattner’s approach to different processes from self-portrait studies to major paintings and public projects.

education Feature Spotlight on Lyn Tebrugge – 15 Year Docent Docent Lyn C. Tebrugge, graduated from the first docent training class, starting in Otober of 2001. She has been a dedicated docent, mentor, gallery presenter and donor at the museum ever since. Lyn holds a master's degree in Counseling from the University of South Florida, Tampa, where she also enjoyed a 25-year career. Lyn receives continual praise for her tours, which reflect a wealth of knowledge gained since 2001 and which include deeply moving stories conveyed in a wonderfully charming manner. After Lyn gave a tour in May for the group New Tampa Seniors, Patti Buster,

Education Coordinator, received glowing words from the group. Their members loved the tour and not only found it very enjoyable but educational as well. Lyn was a great docent and had very interesting stories to share about the paintings and the lives of Leepa and Rattner. We salute Lyn Tebrugge and we thank her heartily for fifteen years of outstanding service and unwavering support. Lyn commented passionately that she loves what she does and is so grateful to have found a "new career" at LRMA.

Lyn intreprets her favorite painting, Hands Ascending, Abraham Rattner's 1948 oil on canvas.

Docent Corps Congratulations in Order! After several months of intense training, Joan Kossoff, Jean Ligon, Carrol Lund, Larry Milne, Al Scalzo and Sylvia Solomon graduated from the spring docent training course and became official docents at a graduation ceremony on June 16. Jan Gray will graduate in the fall. We're delighted they chose to volunteer at LRMA and we're grateful for their service!

Paradise and Popsicles For the Paradise Found exhibition, Curator Christine RencCarter presented an evening gallery talk with artists, Bill Renc and Steven Kenny, both represented in the show. After the event and as the sun was setting, "Professor Pops" handed out delicious, all-natural popsicles on the Terrace Gallery.

Visitor Comments Amazing! Fun filled educational experience for the whole family! The museum is the perfect size, not too small, yet not too big. We enjoyed it very much and would be glad to come again. I loved how you had Allen Leepa's art studio and the door. So cool. ... The Museum is well laid out and the permanent display of a lifesize "Guernica" reproduction is very well done. It was also good to see the amount of space and efforts aimed at art education for young visitors. This is a good visit, worth the effort.
