Interesting how a lot can change in a short period of time. Such has been the case here at Louisville Seminary. In the past six months, our seminary welcomed our new president, the Rev. Dr. Alton B. Pollard III, along with new faculty and staff. Our revised mission statement, “We Build Bridges,” has become central to who we are as a community committed to ministry and service in our world of many faith traditions and cultures. We also celebrated the graduating class of 2018 in May, and welcomed our new students in August.

My Buddhist friends like to remind me that all that exists is impermanent - nothing lasts. Individually and communally we grow, learn, succeed, and fail as we march through life. Always moving forward. Always striving to be better than what we were the year, month, or even the day before.

Change does not come without challenge. As we adjust to our everevolving life, we simultaneously work to maintain our sense of self.

This issue of Mosaic offers some perspectives on transition: from seminary to ministry; from one vocation to the next; from suffering to healing; from Louisville to the world; and from the world to Louisville.

Dear Louisville Seminary Community:

I write these words from a heart overflowing with love, joy, and thanksgiving for you. In the weeks and months since my appointment as president-elect of this signature institution, I have been showered with well-wishes and prayers that have carried me forward to this present moment. Today, I proudly serve as the tenth president of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and carry within me the gift and gravitas of what that responsibility means. I am surrounded by the company of the faithful here at Louisville Seminary.

My work will be held in sacred trust. Every one of you from the children and families who reside on our campus and the men and women who maintain our facilities and staff our offices to the members of our alum association and more - together will ensure that we do not grow weary in well-doing. My time with you will be extraordinary because of who you are and what you desire for us to be. I have been called to one of the most prominent seminaries in theological education, and after 165 years we have only just begun. I continue to marvel at this blessing. I have been invited to become one of you, to take up this presidential work, for such a time as this.

My first months at Louisville Seminary have been time well spent meeting and learning from staff and administrators. With our academic year now under way, I will continue to do more of the same, engaging our students and faculty to the best of my ability. I will seek to be an effective leader, strive for excellence, and practice self-love and communal care. As a creature of finitude, I am in some ways bound by the constraints of time and space. My best intentions notwithstanding, my energy and memory will falter at times. I will make mistakes. I will err. I will fall short.

I will necessarily be away from campus for extended periods of time, summoned to the wider work of the presidency, but I will not be inaccessible. I will be raising our institution’s profile, sharing our good news, engaging our alums, expanding our circle of friends, raising funds, cultivating generosity, extending hospitality, bearing witness, and being our public face. I will return to campus and to ongoing and meaningful engagement with our students, faculty, and friends.

My leadership style is principled, inclusive and consensus-seeking. When and where a declarative word needs to be given, quietly and confidently, I will provide the same. I will wear my business suits as appropriate and my beloved African attire most of all. I will represent the mission of Louisville Seminary to our stakeholders and the general public with a dedication and commitment that begins here at home in Louisville and Kentucky. I will worship with local congregations and proclaim the Good News when and where called upon. I will seek out our city’s communities of color and foster our engagement with diverse peoples and faiths.

As a seminal seminary of the Presbyterian Church (USA), we are building bridges of understanding with a transformative faith that actively engages the world. We covenant to model our exemplary mission in instruction and delivery, worship and practice, governance and advising.

By inheritance, we are many lamps, one light, a seminary proudly born of the Presbyterian and Reformed traditions, courageously living into our ecumenical, interfaith, and intersectional possibilities. In a world sorely distressed, God’s people everywhere have need of us. A reconciling justice companions our history. Our just dedications powerfully honor the same today.

ALTON B. POLLARD III’S FIRST MONTHS ON CAMPUS

n June 8, the Louisville Seminary Board of Trustees formally approved the appointment of the Rev. Dr. Alton B. Pollard III as the seminary’s 10th president.

While regional and national media picked up the news, direct communications were sent to Louisville Seminary’s faculty, staff, students, alums, and other key stakeholders. Meetings with faculty and staff were held throughout the day, and a special welcome service took place in Caldwell Chapel. In his introductions, Pollard wasted no time letting us know that he is “all in” at Louisville Seminary.

“Rare is the theological institution today that innovates well in contemporary society, modeling theological education for just inclusivity in an increasingly diverse world,” said Pollard, a Howard Thurman scholar. “As much of our society is focused on division, I will ensure that Louisville Seminary will engage our world of different religious, social, and cultural perspectives, through teaching and scholarship, and the preparation of persons for lives of faithful witness and public service.”

A scholar, author, consultant and speaker on the subjects of African American and U.S. religion and culture, Pollard was previously dean of the School of Divinity and professor of religion and culture at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Prior to his eleven years at Howard, Pollard served as director of Black Church Studies and chair of American Religious Cultures at Emory University, and taught at Wake Forest University and St. Olaf College. He earned degrees from Duke University, Harvard University Divinity School, and Fisk University.

SETTLING IN By late July, Pollard was settling in to his office in Nelson Hall and his home next door to Louisville Seminary’s campus.

Finding a sense of place is a challenge with any transition.

One late summer afternoon finds Pollard in his office sorting through his books – half of which were lost in his move to Louisville. His house is a bachelor pad of sorts. Pollard’s wife, his “most beloved” Jessica, is not due to move to Louisville until she retires from her work in Washington, D.C. “I think I use maybe three rooms in that house right now,” he says.

That, according to Pollard, who notes “talking to and being with people” as one of his favorite hobbies, is among the biggest challenges.

To meet that challenge, Louisville Seminary’s new leader, teacher, and pastor wasted no time scheduling one-on-one meetings with seminary faculty, staff, and administrators. When students arrived on campus in late August, Pollard made it a point to engage with them during orientation activities, at chapel, and wherever else possible.

In these first encounters, the community found a person who believes that he – and we – live in service to God, and, as such our efforts must be nothing less than our best; and that our personal and professional lives must be devotions to the gifts that God gives us. Where you might often find a new person on the job asking how things are done, Pollard’s questions and discussions focus more on why things are done. Where might be opportunities for improvement?

How do our efforts reflect the ethos of Louisville Seminary?

Delores Brisbon, a senior advisor for In Trust Center for Theological Schools and Lilly Endowment Inc., knows Pollard from his time at Howard School of Divinity. Brisbon was one of several who recommended Pollard for the Louisville Seminary presidency. In doing so, she noted Pollard’s passion for social justice concerns; drive for the pursuit of excellence, not just for the sake of oneself, but as a witness to Christ; and a leadership style the respects that past but challenges institutions to become better versions of themselves.

“Alton understands that the community – together – is responsible for fulfilling the mission of an institution,” said Brisbon. “As Louisville Seminary has already seen (and will continue to see), Alton operates with conviction and compassion. He will expect more from Louisville Seminary because he knows the seminary’s potential for further success.”

Brisbon’s enthusiasm is shared among Pollard’s peers.

“He is a principled leader, a superb scholar, and a prophetic voice in both academia and the public square for social justice,” said Brian K. Blount, president and professor of New Testament at Union Presbyterian Seminary. “I was delighted for both Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and for him when I heard the news of his call to be the seminary’s next president. He has the administrative and scholarly gifts to shepherd Louisville into the next wonderful chapter of its ministry of theological education.”

into one unit, Pollard illustrated the value of ministry as an expression of community and vice versa. Further building on that idea, all seminary staff are welcome to attend Pollard’s Administrative Council meetings.

Even before his first official day as president, Pollard’s calendar was full of meetings with local faith, community service, and even government representatives. These meetings were about more than just good PR for the new president. Pollard wants Louisville Seminary to be active and engaged participants in the betterment of the community.

In his fall 2018 convocation address, Pollard said: As a community of theological scholars, we are called to … overcome our own worst fears; to advance the common cause; to advocate for the poor; to agitate for justice; to wage peace; to build a common humanity under a friendly sky; to engage in a kind of transcendent hope and prophetic advocacy that saves people’s lives and helps to make all of us whole. … God’s dream for we who dare to believe is that we would confess our human contradictions, build bridges, dare to transgress and overcome the great social barriers of our day with our hearts and deeds and lives. … Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, it is our sacred truth – we, all of us, belong to one another. We are of one blood. We are sisters and brothers. We are ubuntu. We are beloved. We are one family. And the best news of all is that God believes in us.”

ON THE JOB

All of these priorities have several goals assigned to them. In his opening remarks to the board, Pollard noted that the future may be uncertain, but we as a community will be held accountable for achieving the seminary’s goals and we will all meet that future together.

Dr. Pollard embodies Louisville Seminary’s long tradition of bridging differences within the church and broader society.

He will affirm and further develop our historic Presbyterian emphasis on interdenominational cooperation. Under his leadership I hope the seminary will demonstrate a way forward through some of the most divisive issues of our time. He is a principled peacemaker.

In his short time here, Dr. Pollard has made himself known and available to the students so that we may get to know our new president. Dr. Pollard has embodied relational and reverent leadership since the first time I met him on campus this summer. The “Louisville Seminary Experience” embodies much more than a student’s matriculation toward a life of ministry and service. It’s an experience that calls on students, as well as faculty, staff, and alums, to live their lives according to the seminary’s mission of building bridges and engaging the world in great need.

In that spirit, Seminary President Alton B. Pollard III recently announced a restructuring of services offered to seminary students and alums.

Effective October 8, Kilen Gray, Louisville Seminary’s dean of student engagement, leads the new Division of Student Engagement. The offices of admissions and financial aid now report to Gray as part of the new division. The Division of Student Engagement also includes engagement and outreach to the alum and church communities.

“Student matriculation is about more than books, papers, and classes,” said Gray (MDiv ’02, DMin ’16). “The ministry of Louisville Seminary is about the world coming to our campus and our campus finding its place in the world. This new division gives alums the opportunity to become more involved in the life kilen gray of the seminary – from student recruitment to 10 Mosaic FALL / WINTER 2018-19

community and church relations. Students also have a more cohesive body of resources at their disposal and are able to draw on the wisdom of our faculty and staff as well as those who have been their shoes.”

Sandra Moon (MDiv/JD ’11), who served as the seminary’s director of alum, church and community engagement since 2015, serves as interim Sandra Moon director of admissions and alum engagement.

“I am excited to be part of the new student engagement office,” said

Moon. “I look forward to exploring new recruitment strategies, including how we can better engage our alums in our recruitment efforts. I also look forward to working with Kilen in finding ways to increase student satisfaction and retention rates. Getting our students in the door is only part of the process— helping to ensure that they are in a community where they can flourish and where their gifts for ministry can grow is another important part of the equation.”

“As before, our colleagues will continue to closely interface with academic affairs and other departments,” said Pollard. “I am excited about what together our student-centric efforts will accomplish on behalf of our students and Louisville Seminary.” n

SUE GARRETT STEPS DOWN AS DEAN On August 31, 2018, Dr. Susan R. Garrett concluded six years as dean of Louisville Seminary. She is spending a year on sabbatical and will return to full-time teaching in the fall of 2019.

Among her accomplishments as dean, Garrett oversaw the recruitment, hiring, and professional development of a number of new faculty and staff members. With help from others, she wrote several successful grant proposals, including ones to the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations (to support Black Church Studies), the Henry Luce Foundation (to support Doors to Dialogue), and the Association of Theological Schools (to support programing in restorative justice). She led the faculty in designing new program assessment measures and practices, as well as a new curriculum. And, together with administrative and faculty colleagues, she continually tended to student needs and worked to help students thrive.

“Serving as dean has been quite challenging but also profoundly rewarding,” said Garrett, who joined Louisville Seminary’s faculty in 1995. “The joys of the office were chiefly in the strong collegial relationships I was able to develop with our gifted faculty, administrators, and support staff, who work so hard to advance the learning of our students and overall mission of our school. I leave the office

eager to spend more time teaching and writing, but I am sad to step away from the engaging work to which I have had the privilege of devoting myself these past six years.”

Garrett’s plans for sabbatical are to design a book series on the Bible and the culture wars and continue her role as chair of the seminary’s self-study committee for re-accreditation with the Association of Theological Schools.

Dr. Steve Cook has assumed the role of acting seminary dean. In addition to his new responsibilities as seminary dean, Cook will continue in his capacity as registrar and associate dean for institutional research and effectiveness.

“I am honored to serve as acting dean as we continue to evolve as a community committed to building bridges and engaging the world,” said Cook.

By Daniel Van Beek, Master Of Divinity Student I once thought sports journalism was next, or perhaps radio, when I graduated from college. “Next” turned into a factchecking gig near Chicago that became a writing and editing job.

When I moved back to Michigan, “next” was a copywriting job that became a 13-year marketing career.

In 2017, “next” was a call to ministry, and so I found myself at Louisville Seminary. But even here, there is always a “next.”

Last spring, an email arrived from our seminary’s director of alum, church and community engagement announcing a summer internship opportunity at First Presbyterian Church of Petersburg, Alaska. I was intrigued, and soon after the spring semester ended, I found myself on Mitkof Island in Southeast Alaska – about 2,500 miles away from my family in Louisville.

The plan was for me to be the full-time acting pastor of the church between the retirement of the Rev. Bob Carter (a Louisville Seminary alum – MDiv ’79) and the new interim pastor starting in the fall. At my disposal were elders in the congregation, local pastors of other denominations, and a commissioned ruling elder from a “nearby” town (in Alaskan terms) for any day-to-day assistance.

Petersburg sits on an island and is accessible only by boat or plane. Living in a remote place gives a sense of closeness in the community and in the church. The pastors of a few churches got together for coffee every Tuesday. A stroll down Main Street included meeting new folks, and even seeing a few parishioners.

Here, ministry happens not just in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings, but everywhere at all times. It happens when grocery shopping or hiking along the beautiful trails on the island. It happens when walking the harbors or when visiting with a gravely ill congregant. It happens at the post office, the parks, and on whale-watching boats. It happens wherever people get together, linked by an intrinsic understanding of humanity and nature, a unique viewpoint that is shared by the people here.

I was struck by the yearning for spiritual discussion and exploration that some folks had not been able to find within the nine churches in Petersburg. These conversations followed 12 Mosaic FALL / WINTER 2018-19

me on occasions—attending a local Pride picnic, during a spontaneous viewing of killer whales swimming through town, or the big Fourth of July events. I decided to introduce something new—a “next”—to this community.

Almost seven years ago, I helped found a Pub Theology group back in my home of Benton Harbor, Michigan. I thought I might find willing participants here in Alaska, especially with the swelling summer population that came to work on fishing boats, in the national forest, and at the cannery. I was right. We met at the local pub and discussed philosophical and theological topics ranging from why good things happen to bad people to how we can better conserve nature when so many religious people seem hell-bent on destroying it.

Combining this kind of intellectual discussion, pastoral care in the hospital and new experiences in ministry—planning and officiating a funeral for a well-loved community legend—with mind-bending natural phenomena, provided a new lens on ministry that had never before occurred to me.

What I found in Alaska defied my biases. I found a congregation that loves Jesus, cherishes its heritage, and is hungry for even more connection in its community. I found a fishing village built around transient people and struggling to confront its history displacing the Tlingit and Haida nations on the islands, yet with a perpetual welcome and a curiosity about whoever you run into next. I found that ministry does not fit into nicely constructed boxes where it follows the rules. I found pastors and churches looking to work together.

What’s next?

For the First Presbyterian Church of Petersburg, Alaska, what’s next is an interim pastor and a look at their future. What’s next is a continued dedication to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a place where love rules and people continue to surprise you.

For my calling, what’s next is rooted in the connection I made with God and people in a place like Petersburg. The intersection of nature, church, and community instilled within me a deep sense of commitment to the people of God in whatever place I may find myself—and maybe even especially—in places no one else wants to go.

My call has never been stronger. My desire to do ministry for my Savior has never been greater. My need to control where that is going to happen, however, has never been less. This experience taught me to lean on the Holy Spirit in a way I never thought I had to before. Now I know that “next” is limitless. n

FROM GOD’S EYES

If I imagine what God’s eyes look like, they are not blue or brown.

I imagine God’s eyes being big enough for the whole world to be seen in God’s pupils - masking the pain, grief, happiness, joy, and relief we may think God experiences as we often like to assign characteristics and emotions to God. I imagine God’s eyes as a source of shelter and comfort that provide strength and affirm me when I am scared. I just want to gaze in the eyes of the Lord, so I know there is a place for me there.

To see me in God’s eyes is selfish but necessary because I need to know that in God’s eyes I am seen and valued. I need to know that I matter and that I am genuinely a product of God’s creation. You see, the eye holds the truth, so if I had the chance to look into God’s eyes, I would truly be able to see me through the vision that has been mapped out for me. There is always a little reminder in which I realize I see God’s eyes daily.

Ministry for me serves beyond the church. It begins in the walls of a psychiatric hospital and extends from across an ocean in the stream of social justice. I have seen God’s eyes more often than I acknowledge. I’ve seen the eyes of God staring at me in tears because they lost their children to Child Protective Services or because they couldn’t put down the drugs. I’ve seen the eyes of God struggling with depression and searching for a word of encouragement from me. I see the eyes of God through my coworkers who so effortlessly help those struggling with mental illness and substance abuse after days of being verbally abused. I see God in my co-workers’ compassion to acknowledge the sick and make them feel as if they are people when our patients are at their lowest points in life. I imagine God’s eyes observing the way I interact with my patients; often I am too weary, but there are always patients who capture my heart and remind me why I am capable of harboring their pain while caring for them.

I also believe I encounter God’s eyes on the front lines standing against social injustices. I see God’s eyes through chants and cries from both sides. I see the eyes of God battle through racism while being fiercely motivated to stand up for what is right. I realize, in my difference of opinion from the other side, that we are merely just trying to be right with what we were taught, even if we were taught from opposing views. I imagine in those times God allows me to be face-to-face with those who can possibly harm me but embracing me with a sense of peace. I see God’s eyes in the families who cry out because they too have buried their beloved son or daughter who has become another hashtag from police violence.

I try to find God’s eyes from the other side, but my blindness makes me see rage, sorrow, and trauma.

Seminary has allowed me to see God in many ways I could have not imagined. I see God’s eyes in the faculty, staff, and administration who help us press on through each day. I encounter the eyes of God when I see the joy, the accomplishments, and the happiness on my colleagues’ faces. I know God’s eyes when I need someone to turn to in difficult times. Those eyes you see, they all belong to human beings. The eyes of God, we must never forget, stare at us from the person speaking to us, teaching us, lifting us up, and reminding us we are all here on this earth to provide good quality care to all those around us.

This isn’t a story about me but the truth in which I live. I often look for God’s eyes when I can’t seem to find the path. I am blessed to know that God is staring at me on this journey I call life. A journey meant for us to touch the lives of others, help those in need, love those who hate us, minister to those who are lost and mold those who need guidance. I am so glad I witness what I believe God’s eyes look like, even if I can’t see the world from God’s view. n Mosaic | FALL / WINTER 2018-19 13

Stewardship — taking care of resources and getting the job done — started early for W. Eugene March, Louisville Seminary’s A.B. Rhodes Professor Emeritus of Old Testament and recipient of the seminary’s 2018 Faithful Steward Award.

s an only child growing up in Texas during World War II, March was his family’s “resident banker.” He squirreled away his allowance and earnings from odd jobs, created a budget, and donated to the Boy Scouts and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (by attending “Children’s Concerts” arranged though the public schools). He would even float his parents a loan if they needed, say, a dollar for the milkman.

Then he opened his first savings account, along with a war bond, and learned about interest. “So from that point on, I charged my parents a little interest when they borrowed money,” he recalled with a laugh.

A career in banking or accounting could have naturally followed. But in high school, March — who had not been a regular

churchgoer — joined a Presbyterian church. That marked the beginning of supporting his local congregation with his money … and more.

“God wouldn’t let me off the hook,” he said.

March went to Austin College, then to Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, with the intention of becoming a pastor.

Throughout his education, he made small contributions to the college and seminary.

During his last year of seminary, a representative of the faculty encouraged him to go to graduate school and offered March a scholarship.

Getting a Ph.D. was the furthest thing from his mind, March said, but he took the offer. “Part of my ongoing theology is, if someone opens a door for you, you ought to at least look inside,” he said.

That particular door helped lead the young

Texan to Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and a new understanding of people of other faiths and races.

March returned to Austin Seminary as a professor of Old Testament before joining the Louisville Seminary faculty in 1982. He would also serve as director of continuing education, director of the Doctor of Ministry program, assistant to the president and dean of the seminary.

There were times, March said, when he thought working in a congregation — his original plan — might be better stewardship of his time and energy than teaching. But each time he raised those questions to himself, he would hear God say: “You’re not going to be doing me any good on the front line. I want you at the rear, teaching pastors what to do.”

One such pastor, the Rev. Polly Williams (MDiv ’97), describes March as teacher, pastor, and friend. “He is a discerning, humble, joyful, hilarious leader who really does care. He will get the job done and expect you to do the same.”

While serving on a General Assembly task team on homosexuality in the 1970s or confronting controversy over masculine references and the imagery for God, March got the job done by going back to the biblical text. He became convinced homosexuality wasn’t the issue in a few key texts. He found a multitude of non-fatherly “God-language” and rewrote some of his beginning-of-class prayers accordingly. When he asked the students if they noticed anything different, “not a one did,” he said, laughing.

“I still take the Bible with extreme seriousness,” March

said. “There are parts of it I disagree with … but I think God put those things in the Bible for us to wrestle with and think about.”

It’s not enough to tell students to preach what’s in the Bible and let God do the work, he concluded.

“You have to also realize that you’re a steward,” he said, “and put splintered and smashed human justice back together.”

The Rev. Barbara Barnes (MDiv ’87), who serves with March on the seminary’s President’s Roundtable, said March did not simply teach the subject, but the whole person. “He modeled how to be a person of authenticity and integrity, with a passion for justice, righteousness, and peace.”

In retirement, March lives in Louisville with wife, Lynn Gant March (MDiv '81, DMin '87), and still writes curriculum for the

Presbyterian Church (USA).

He continues to support Highland Presbyterian Church, where he and his friend and Louisville Seminary colleague, the late David Hester, taught an adult Sunday school class for two decades.

“Their love of the Bible and ability to make clear the connections between scripture and everyday life had a profound effect on members of this congregation,” said Highland’s pastor, the Rev. Cynthia Campbell.

“They nurtured lifelong relationships and deepened the life of faith.”

March also continues to support the arts, the college and seminaries he attended, and of course Louisville Seminary.

Over the years, Louisville Seminary has had many students who previously served as YAVS, who accompany local agencies working to address root causes of poverty and reconciliation while exploring the meaning and motivation of their faith in intentional community with peers and mentors.

Kentucky. The seminary conferred Master of Divinity degrees to 28 students. Nine students earned Master of Arts degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy, and Doctor of Ministry degrees were conferred on four students. Eight students earned a Certificate in Black Church Studies. Three students earned a Certificate in Education Ministry, and one student received a Pastoral Studies Diploma.

Angela Cowser, associate dean of the Black Church Studies and Doctor of Ministry programs, served as the lead faculty at Simpson College’s Simpson Youth Academy in Indianola, Iowa, in June. Also in June she participated in the Industrial Areas Foundation Community Organizing Training, which was facilitated by Episcopal Commons in Chicago, Illinois. In September, Cowser participated in the Sankofa Institute for African American Pastoral Leadership at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. Cowser also recently received a 2018 Wabash Center Fellowship. Her fellowship project will focus on “Bloom’s Taxonomy and the Introduction to Black Church Studies.” In October she published a book review on Actions of Their Own to Learn: Studies in Knowing, Acting and Being (Sense Publishers, 2017). Her review appears on the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion’s website, www.wabashcenter.wabash. edu.

Susan R. Garrett, professor of New Testament, participated in the biennial meeting of the Oxford University Press (OUP) delegates, held in Midtown Manhattan, New York. The delegates are formal advisors to OUP from various fields of study. Garrett serves as the Bible delegate. Delegates from the United States, the United Kingdom, and India were present for the meeting, which

featured presentations on such topics as the various book series and product lines that OUP produces, the state of academic publishing today, and politics and publishing.

Tyler Mayfield, the A.B. Rhodes Associate Professor of Old Testament and faculty director for the Grawemeyer Award in Religion, published A Guide to Bible Basics (Westminster John Knox Press, 2018), which provides foundational information about, and summaries of, each book in the Christian Bible. In November, at the annual SBL/ AAR meeting, Mayfield led a panel review of Dr. James Cone’s book The Cross and the Lynching Tree, which won the 2018 Grawemeyer Award in Religion.

Mayfield will be on sabbatical during the spring semester to complete a book for clergy on Isaiah.

Dean K. Thompson, president emeritus (2004-2010) and professor emeritus of ministry, co-edited (with D. Cameron Murchison) Mentoring: Biblical, Theological, and Practical Perspectives (Eerdmans, 2018). The book features insights from scholars, including Louisville Seminary President Alton B. Pollard III, Louisville Seminary alum Elizabeth Hinson Hasty (MDiv ’95), Grawemeyer Award winner Luke Timothy Johnson (2011), and more, about how positive mentoring relationships are essential to the formation of strong Christian leaders.

new director The Rev. Elizabeth Seeger Troy is clinical director of the Louisville Seminary Counseling Center at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Troy, a licensed marriage and family therapist in both Kentucky and Indiana, began her service at Louisville Seminary on July 30.

As clinical director, Troy manages the Louisville Seminary Counseling Center; recruits, evaluates, and manages all external student counseling placements; and collaborates with the seminary’s Marriage and Family Therapy program director and faculty in support of the Louisville Seminary Marriage and Family Therapy program’s practicum series.

Troy received her Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy degrees from Louisville Seminary in 2004 and her bachelor’s degree in music therapy/ music education from Wartburg College (Waverly, Iowa) in 1997. She is an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor. In 2007, she was ordained as minister of word and sacrament (teaching elder) for the Presbyterian Church (USA).

These were the words my spouse said to me as we drove out through the gates of Louisville Seminary after our Exploratory Weekend. And I was filled with gratitude in that moment – gratitude that God had led me to this place and gratitude that my spouse felt it, too.

We came to check out Louisville Seminary largely because we knew that we could live on campus as a family – which at the time included two young children and two dogs. What we found there was an exponential expansion of our family through the relationships formed with my classmates and their families, the faculty, and the staff.

Louisville Seminary prepared me for ministry in ways I expected. I learned to ask questions I had never thought of before and to explore deeply the history and traditions of my faith. I learned new skills for biblical interpretation, how to put together an effective sermon, and how to think theologically. I learned skills for dealing with conflict. I learned how to moderate a session meeting and how to read the Book of Order.

Even more valuable were the unexpected lessons. From my professors and my classmates, I learned how to be a pastor. I learned how to love the deeply wounded and how to listen. I learned how to lean into my own passion for learning and to spread that joy to those around me. I learned how to set my expectations high, but to temper those expectations with a strong measure of grace – for myself as well as others.

Her focus is leadership formation and discernment, working with the Committee on Ministries, associations, and individuals seeking a call. She is also the pastor of Open Door Christian Church and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the seminary facilitating the basic preaching practicum class. Toni is an ordained minister with dual standing in the UCC and Disciples of Christ.

While searching through old issues of Seminary Times for the answer to a question about the Edwards Lecture series, I ran across a recipe for “Chef Pam’s Advent Brunch Casserole.” The article mentioned the casserole was well-liked by seminary students. I copied the recipe and started to wonder about the history of the campus dining room on the Alta Vista campus.

The early years are not well-documented anywhere. Rick Nutt’s book Many Lamps, One Light lists the administrators who served the seminary on the “new campus,” but it doesn’t show anyone being in charge of food service until 1968. The Campus Directory lists students only for the period from 1964 to 1969. If you were a student then, and remember the names of those who worked in the dining room, please help us fill in the names that accompany this article.

The dining room from the beginning was intended to be the center of socializing on campus. The downtown seminary location had all academic and housing functions in one interconnected building.

Here, on the Alta Vista campus, the functions would be split and on different sides of the campus. The intention for the new dining room was that students and faculty would gather for meals and learn from, and about, one another just as they had before. The dining room has continued to serve this purpose of bringing the seminary community together for such events as faculty debates, Coffee House and Global Feast during Exploratory Weekend, Prom, Apples for Advent, the Employee Christmas Luncheon, celebrations of faculty books, and roasts for faculty retirements.

An early photo shows a brightly lighted space filled with tables arranged for conversation as well as dining. Other photos show the largely male crowd and the numerous ash trays on the tables. The configuration of the dining room has changed over the years.

The rectangular tables have been replaced with round ones, and the serving area has moved. We no longer enter the kitchen area to get our food but serve ourselves from the buffet steam tables. The cash register and meal cards have been replaced with a computer and card reader for charging meals. Even with these changes, the dining room remains a center of the community.

SWEET BROCCOLI SALAD

Salad 4 cups broccoli florets, cut into pieces ¼ cup golden raisins ¼ cup red onion, diced small ⅓ cup carrots, shredded ¼ cup peanuts 1 cup strawberries, sliced Dressing ¾ cup mayonnaise 2 T white vinegar ½ cup powdered sugar

ADVENT BRUNCH CASSEROLE

Combine all salad ingredients except strawberries.

Mix dressing ingredients together and whisk until sugar is dissolved. Just before serving, pour dressing over the salad, add strawberries and toss.

Yield: 6-8 servings

1 package chunk-type hash brown potatoes (thawed) 1 lb cooked breakfast sausage 1 lb shredded cheddar cheese 1 jar red spiced apple rings, cut into 1” pieces 5 large eggs 2 ½ cups milk 1 tsp salt 2 tsp ground nutmeg Preheat the oven to 350°.

Grease a 9” x 11” dish.

Layer hash browns, sausage, and apple pieces. Top with cheese and press down.

Mix eggs, milk, salt and nutmeg until combined, then pour over the cheese.

Bake 30-45 minutes until set in center.

Knife inserted in center will come out clean.
