What is Photojournalism? “I prowled the streets all day, feeling very strung-up and ready to pounce, determined to "trap" life -- to preserve life in the act of living. Above all, I craved to seize the whole essence, in the confines of one single photograph, of some situation that was in the process of unrolling itself before my eyes.”
Henri Cartier Bresson, quoted in Susan Sontag, On Photography. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1977, p. 185. This quote is the best description I have ever heard of photojournalism. Henri Cartier-Bresson is considered to be the father of photojournalism. But he did not consider himself to be a photojournalist. He stated that he did not take pictures to document. Documenting is boring. Form is everything and luck is what makes a good photograph. One of his most famous images is that of a man jumping over a puddle of water. Henri says that he took the picture with his lens stuck between two planks and could not see anything through the viewfinder. It was all luck! But in order for luck to work for you, you must be receptive and prepared. Our competition theme in February was photojournalism. I have always struggled with what that really means. There are only two reasons for taking photographs: for documenting a moment in time or for art. Most of us take photographs for art. We are trying to create something that is esthetically beautiful. Photojournalists take photos generally to document an event or happening. I think what Henri Cartier-Bresson demonstrated is that we can both document life and create art by being prepared for the “Decisive Moment” when form and content merge. Pam opened her retail picture framing business in 1976. At that time she offered custom and do it yourself framing, which afforded wonderful interaction with her customers. Many long friendships have been formed and she has had the chance to work with 3 generations. After 29 years she moved the shop to a new location in Bocage Village shopping center at the corner of Jefferson and Old Hammond Highways. Pam has degrees in interior design and sociology and very much enjoys the creative aspect and the interaction with her customers as they bring in many unique pieces and often challenges leading to research and developing new techniques. Along with her residential customers she has worked with interior designers for residential and commercial applications including medical, educational, retirement facilities, restaurants and offices. Photographing People for Advertising by Nancy Brown has the subtitle of How to take pictures that lead to high-paying jobs. The copyright date is 1986 thus the information is dated. It is primarily for commercial photographs of people for use in advertising. Chapter one suggests starting with friends and neighbors when building a professional advertising photography portfolio. This chapter discusses setting up a structured picture, concentrating on the models’ assets, giving the model something to do, and creating a mood. The second chapter stresses the importance of a test session for yourself. This chapter contains numerous examples of test sessions the author has done. These photos can give the viewer ideas for test photos. Chapter three continues with examples of working with models including the importance of being able to make models feel comfortable and confident. Chapter four talks of photographing couples, and how the photographer can do much more with two people, as the models work off one another. There are several interesting examples of couples photographs. Other chapters offer information on the many looks for the same model and how to turn samples into jobs. Chapter eight talks of special photographic techniques, while chapter none covers handling professional assignments. This book while fairly old is still visually interesting and worth checking out for inspiration if you are interested in shooting people either for enjoyment or for an advertising portfolio.. One of the best photography tips shared with me was...
Look around you when photographing, sometimes the better image is right behind you.
When shooting at dusk, set up your equipment well before hand and shoot until the sun has set. You never know when the lighting will be best for the situation you’re photographing and you don't want to miss it.

The Camera Basics Workshop will be held at the Jones Creek Library from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM on March 23, 2013. During the morning session we will cover the technical aspects of digital cameras. Most cameras take good images using program (P) setting, however under unusual conditions such as fast moving subjects or low light conditions program setting may not provide good quality images consistently. Cameras also come with many other settings besides program so as to create high quality images under unusual conditions. This knowledge will allow you to get the most out of your camera by fully utilizing its capabilities. We will review all camera settings to understand their capabilities and then learn how to choose appropriate camera settings suitable for the shooting environment. Be sure to bring your camera, accessories and manual so we can familiarize you with key camera settings and how to adjust them. We will break for lunch around 11:30 AM and return for the afternoon session. During the second half of the workshop we will cover the camera accessories such as lenses, flashes, tripods, monopods and filters. Please bring your camera accessories so we can address any questions or concerns you may have. If time permits we will review how to manage the digital images through uploading, processing and storing them on our computer and other storage media. The workshop is free and open to general public and LPS members. The space is limited and it is necessary to register by sending an email to the LPS Education Coordinator at educationcoordinator@laphotosociety.com.

The Gulf States Camera Club Council's 2013 convention is being held on April 25-28 in Jackson, Mississippi. Join us for great photography and the unrivaled hospitality that the historic city of Jackson offers. In addition to participating in a variety of photo tours in Jackson and its surrounding areas, our line-up of speakers, workshops, and sponsors will bring you the latest in photographic training, technique, and gear. Plan to join us for a weekend filled with photography and good times. Speakers include: Ed Heaton who is a published and awardwinning professional photographer and educator residing in Chester County, Pennsylvania who specializes in landscape, nature and travel photography. For close to a decade, Ed has conducted workshops, seminars, and classes on an ongoing basis. Ed’s passion for the outdoors is truly reflected in his photography. Beneath the meditative solitude of his images lie an extraordinary awareness of composition and technique. It is a vision that Ed has developed through years of experience as a professional photographer. Ken Hubbard who is the Field Services Manager for Tamron. He is responsible for the company’s events, including Tamron’s popular consumer workshop series. Ken has had nationwide gallery showings of his portrait and landscape photography and teaches enthusiasts how to take better photos at numerous events. Hazel Meredith is involved with the photographic community on local, regional and national levels. Her photos have won many awards and competitions in the past few years
in both local club competitions and international salons. She has over 125 acceptances in PSAsanctioned exhibitions, and she has also received four bronze stars and one silver star for her journalistic efforts. Robert O'Toole, an award winning professional photographer, as a BBC/Shell Wildlife "Photographer of the Year" competition award winner and the American Bald Eagle Foundation "Photographer of the Year" for 2008. Ken Sklute, of Tempe, AZ., has been working with his passions of photographing people and drag racing for 32 years. Ken has succeeded in his photography career by being named Photographer of the Year a total of 25 times between Arizona, New York, and California. Hal Wallar is an award winning photographer who has had a lifelong interest in photography and art. His photographic pursuits have ranged from fine art to technical photography and he has served as an author, presenter, and judge in regards to photographic topics.

The Homecoming We were at the airport to greet my son-in-law from Afghanistan; many families were gathered around eagerly awaiting for their loved ones. As I had my camera focused on my daughter to capture her expression when she saw her husband come off the plane, I heard a small voice excitedly say “Daddy!” I immediately turned my camera and captured this soldier hugging his Father and Son at the same time! What a precious moment! There were many happy tears that day as families were reunited!

Eagle Expo February 28-March 3 in Morgan City, LA The Atchafalaya Basin, the largest overflow swamp in the country, is home to an abundance of wildlife, including rare and endangered species such as the American bald eagle. The Eagle Expo includes boat tours into various waterways to view eagle's nests, raptor show, presentations on the American bald eagle, wildlife, flora, fauna and the culture of the area by wildlife professionals and photographers, and much more. Admission and registration required. William W. Perkins WWII Memorial Weekend, Walker, LA March 15-16 This is a public living history, with two skirmishes planned for Saturday, one for Sunday, and firing demonstrations throughout the weekend. The theme is Western Front August 1944. Aside from the WW2 setups, there will be military vehicle displays of all eras, civilian vehicles pre-1945 (limited to what would have been seen, so no post war converted hot/rat rods), and vendors selling a variety of wares; displays from various museums and various events throughout the weekend, including the Livingston Parish Children's choir and a big band performance. The weekend will kick off Friday night with a swing dance. Check out the event website.
