Practice with your equipment before going on a photo shoot! I learned this lesson the hard way. During my recent trip to Hawaii, I took a helicopter ride around the island of Kauai. I wanted to video as much of the ride as I could as well as taking still photos. I have used my DSLR enough that I am pretty efficient at getting usable photos under any circumstances, but the video camera is pretty new and I haven’t used it very much. I thought that all I had to do was point and hit record. Wrong!!

Early in the flight, I somehow managed to turn the camera to manual focus. It was very bright, loud and windy in the helicopter and I couldn’t really see the video camera screen, so I didn’t know that everything was out of focus.

Also during the flight, I got confused as to when I was recording and when the camera was in standby. As you can guess, I got a lot of out of focus knee and foot shots rather than the cliffs and waterfalls that I was after. Pretty disappointing when I got back and started looking at the videos!

Last month the rule of thirds, the use of lines and shapes, the use of symmetry, texture and repetition were reviewed. The use of color contrast was touched on briefly. I want to pick up that thread of thought. The use of values, contrast, and tonal range are very useful tools when directing the eye to a focal point Remember in the photo of Churchill (last month) the way the eye went immediately to the lighter face, then explored the darker areas? Look at this photograph of a flower. Where does the eye land?
First the eye goes to the lightest part of the image, then to the second lightest and on to search the dark areas. The values of the light draw the eye in this manner. Use that knowledge to direct your viewers eyes to the area of your choosing. This is an awesome power. Move on to color. Colors are influenced by the colors around them. Red is set off by black and it gives a feeling of power and strength. Witness this flower:

Complementary colors make each other more beautiful. The red of the bird is set off by the contrasting green in the photo shown here. There is so much to learn about color that I recommend a lesson that I find helpful: http://digital-photography-school.com/learningto-see-part-iv .
Color blocking is also great fun. It uses color and shapes to guide the eye. An example is this car: Can you guess what kind of car this is?

Another method of directing the eye is with depth of field. In the flower below I chose to blur out the distracting background. There was nothing of interest there. So rather than allowing the background to distract, I blurred it by using an f stop of 5.6. Try taking the same image with your lens wide open or at f 5.6, again at f 8 and then at f 16. Then decide which you like best. If there is enough distance between your subject and the background, it will automatically darken at the wide open f stops.
This is the time of year when the agapanthus are blooming. They are a wonderful depth of field study. I encourage you to find some and try varying depths of field. You will have a great time and get some great images. This is just a beginning of subjects for better composition. Next month I will finish up with framing and some tips and tricks. Also I am suggesting a challenge for the month of June. I hope you will actually try it and enjoy it. First week of June: Stand in one place in your yard and take 10 photographs using lines to direct the eye. Then move to any place in you choose and repeat. Second week of June: repeat the process using repetition to direct the eye. Third week of June: repeat the process using tone, value, or color contrast to guide the eye. The last week of June: repeat the process using complementary colors and color blocking to direct the eye. Then compare your images with those you took prior to this exercise. How much better are they?

Lightroom Workflow Workshop July 20, 2013 Jones Creek Library 9:30 am to 3:00 pm Gene Bachman will host the Lightroom Workflow Workshop The morning session will cover the workflow for importing files to final print out of images in Lightroom 4. The afternoon session will be use of presets and add-in’s such as Photomatix and Nik software. He will also preview additional functionality that will come with Lightroom 5 (expected to be released in June, 2013). This workshop will help you organize your photo libraries and show how to edit in Photoshop and reimport back to Lightroom. Anyone who is new to Lightroom or has struggled with Lightroom will benefit from this workshop. Please register by sending an email to our Education Coordinator.

This was presented to the club members present at the last meeting, and there appeared to be a consensus of agreement on this proposal. June, 2013 (no firm date yet) Global WildLife Center, Folsom, LA The Global Wildlife Center now offers Private Pinzgauer Tours for Photographers. Each Pinz is 4X4; it can go anywhere we want to go in the 900 acre Park. Apparently many of the 4000 animal species do not go up to the regular wagon tours; they are not afraid to approach the Pinz. Good News: the Pinz Tours are very popular; Reservations are required. Saturdays & Sundays are the busiest. Bad News: the Pinz Tours can accommodate 9 photographers; The cost is $35 per person per hour. So….3 hours would be $105 per person. Good news: Ken went to www.globalwildlife.com and reviewed the images other photographers posted. The cost quickly became a bargain to have an opportunity to take quality images of so many unique animals, an hour away from Baton Rouge! Ken is planning to take the Pinz Tour to determine if it makes sense to offer it to LPS as a Field Trip. In the works - check website for firm dates First NBC Bank in New Orleans - stunning architecture, as seen in the Nicolas Cage film, Stolen. Molly the Pony - the orphaned Katrina pony with an artificial leg.
