Our Class Covenant  The following is an optional bulletin board that you can have children complete as you experience Sessions 1 through 5. Children will learn about the covenant God made with Moses and with Noah. Have children make and display a class covenant to show love and respect for themselves, for one another, and for God.

Set the Stage Ask: What is a covenant? Remind children that a covenant is an agreement or a promise and that there are many examples of covenants in the Bible. Point out that the Ten Commandments are the most obvious example of a covenant between God and his people. Ask: What covenant did God have with Noah? (to keep him, his family, and all the animals safe from the flood) Ask: What are some examples of covenants we have in our class? (Possible answers: classroom rules, respecting one another’s space and belongings) Say: We have written rules and unwritten rules that are like covenants in our classroom. Today we are going to make a bulletin board with a class covenant as a visible promise to one another and to God. We will make three promises: we will be good learners, we will show respect and love for one another, and we will work with God to make the world a better place.

Make the Bulletin Board Discuss the three promises of the covenant. As a class brainstorm a list of actions for each promise. Then have children choose three actions for each promise that they consider to be the most important. Ask children to use art supplies to add the actions to the bulletin board. Allow time for children to decorate the board as they wish. Suggest that they illuminate the title or the first letter of each word, use decorative letters in the title, or add an interesting border or symbols to the bulletin board.

Close the Project After finishing the bulletin board, say: Each day this week, choose one item from the bulletin board and make an effort to carry through with that action.

Use the Bulletin Board  During appropriate times in Sessions 1 through 5, call children’s attention to the bulletin board to remind them of the class covenant.

Prayer Ask children to bow their heads to prepare for silent prayer. Together pray the Sign of the Cross. Say: God, please help us keep the promises that we made in our class covenant. Conclude by praying Amen.
