1 Set the Stage

Discuss the meaning of a community. Say: Some communities are made up of people who have the same beliefs, interests, or jobs. Can you name a community you are part of based on similar beliefs? (Church community) Discuss community helpers. Ask: Can you name helpers in your Church community? (Possible answers: altar servers, catechists, lectors) Say: How can you serve your Church community? (Possible answer: help with a service activity)

For example, to illustrate community, ask children to stand in a group. Gesture with wide arms to show inclusion while saying aloud the word community. Have children act out scenarios of helping one another.
2 Get Started Ask a volunteer to read aloud the session title and the text in the blue box. Encourage children to suggest various answers to the question. Say: In this session we will learn how to give praise to God and how to share God’s love with others and help people in need. Solidarity
Prayer
Future Helpers Discuss what roles as Church community helpers children might be interested in doing in the future. For example, ask if they have a specific interest, such as music. Suggest that they can use their interest in music to be in the church choir. Then have children make a group collage using pictures of these helpers from old magazines.

Have children fold their hands and pray the Sign of the Cross. Then lead them in praying together the prayer. Conclude by praying Amen. Say: We pray the Sign of the Cross as a way of remembering the Trinity. Let us be aware of God’s presence during our session.
