main message of the Bible and compare it to their responses. Among the letters in the New Testament are three called letters of John, the apostle who was very close to Jesus. A summary of the Bible’s message about God is found in 1 John 4:16. Can someone locate this in the Bible and read it aloud? (“We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.”)

You will be learning many new terms and ideas in your study of the Old Testament. To help remember these and the people and events, you will record them in your log. During the year, you can add important words and definitions, maps, art, and worksheets; and you can complete some activities right in your log.

Activities, give directions for decorating the Bible notebooks. ✦✦ Pass out copies of BLM 6. You might play background music as the students work. ✦✦

Take out the daisies you made.

✦✦

Choose one of the quotations from the list on the worksheet and letter it on the front of your log. You might practice first on another paper in order to decide on a style of print and spacing. [Let some students put sample styles on the board.]

You can make a border around your quotation or complete it in another artistic way. When you finish the cover, do the activity on the worksheet. This exercise will help you to become more familiar with the names of the Old Testament books.

Lead the class in a prayer response to God’s Word. Lord, your Word is full of power and love. Help us to listen to your Word and to do whatever it tells us. You may add your own prayers in your heart. [Pause.] We ask all this through Jesus Christ your Son. Amen.

Acting 1. Lead the students through the Summary and Review Activities, pages 7–8.

2. BLM 7 Distribute and

administer BLM 7, Chapter 1 Quiz. Use this as an opportunity to assess the students’ understanding of the main concepts of the chapter. If there is not sufficient time for the students to complete the quiz, consider moving it to Day Five.

3. Encourage the use of the Bible

at home. ✦✦ You will be using the Bible often in class, but you can also let God’s Word be the Word of Life.
