Foreword

DuringthemonthofOctober,LBCSIʼsmembershavetakenonaseriesofchallenges andexperiences.Theyhavetraveledinternationally,presentedtoschools,andplaced highlyinnationalcompetition.We,asalways,arehighlysatisfiedwiththeirworkand areexcitedtosharetheirexperienceswithyou.

LBCSI CyberBattleofEstonia

OnOctober26,AnshulChelapurathʻ23,JackWachterʻ24,TeddyMarineʻ24, JakeSanʻ19,andMatthewFleschnerʻ20setouttocompeteintheCyberBattleof Estonia.Aeralong12hourflight,Anshul,Jack,Teddy,Jake,andMatthewlandedin Estoniaʼscapital,Tallinn.AccompaniedbyArmandoSeay,ExecutiveDirectorofMISI, JamesMendozaandLloydBolodeokuofMisiDreamportthegroupreceivedatourof TheUniversityofTartuʼsstateoftheartDeltaBuilding.Theteamwasfirstshownthe university'sComputerHistoryMuseum,IoTCity,andteachingspaces,andthenthe arenatheywouldbecompetingin.The CyberBattleofEstoniabeganat10:00am andranuntil5:00pm.Competitors encountered3roundsofcompetition consistingofCapturetheFlagchallenges ofincreasingdifficulty.Ourteam,MISI CyberTeamUSA,thesoleteam representingtheUnitedStatesamong17 Balticcountries,placed5thoutof24teams.Thecompetitionwastelevisedacross EstoniaandwashostedbyafamousEstonianpersonality;alinktothelivestreamcan befoundhere.Ourcompetitorsreturnedhomewithagreatdealofmotivationand insightintohowcybersecuritycompetitionsarerunworldwide.MatthewandJake, LBCSIalumni,competedontheUSAʼsCyberBattleofEstoniateamalongsidecurrent LBCSIstudentsJack,Teddy,andAnshul.MattandJakefeeltheyhavegainedabetter appreciationforcybersecuritycompetitionsandtheprogressofLoyolaBlakefieldʼs CyberInitiative.WewouldliketothanktheNSA,USCyberCommand,andArmando Seayformakingthisincredibleexperiencepossible.

OnOctober23rd,LoyolaBlakefieldhosteditsannualOpenHousewhere prospective5thand8thgraderscometoLoyolatotourthecampusandseewhatithas tooffer.OurLBCSIDonspreparedapresentationtoshowinterestedstudentswhat cyberisabout.

IoTCity

AnIoTCity,orsmartcity,isamodelcityusedtosimulateandmodelhow differentinfrastructuresandservices,suchassecuritycameras,trafficlights,street lights,billboards,andpublictransport, communicateandfunction.Anshul Chelapurathʻ23,TeddyMarineʻ24,Liam Lucasʻ24,andDylanKellerʻ24built LoyolaBlakefieldʼsIoTCityto demonstratethebasicconceptsthat LoyolaCyberteaches.Students interactedwithdifferentpartsofthe modelcityandwereshownhowthey canbeattackedanddefended.Theattackvectorsweredesignedusingdocumented cyberattacksagainstAmericancities.Usingwhatourstudentshavecreated,weplan tofeatureafarmorein-depthIoTCityatouryearlycompetition,LBC2.Paralleltothe IoTCitypresentation,manyLBCSImembersspokewithinterestedparentsontheir experiencesincybersecurityandatLoyolaasawhole.Topicsofdiscussionincluded certifications,sponsors,andinternships.

SocialMediaPresentations

Thisfall,ourleadershipteamwasexcitedtotraveltolocalschoolsforsocial mediaandcyberawarenesspresentations.Mr.Morrill,alongwithCharlieHaleʻ23, NoahMorrayeʻ23,BrendanMclaughlinʻ23,JamesKellerʻ24traveledtoSt.Stephenʼs SchoolandHarfordDaySchool.Wealwaysenjoyinteractingwithenthusiastic studentsandansweringalloftheirquestions!Wecannotwaittotravelback!Wewould liketoextendaspecialthankyoutoMs.KearneyfromHarfordDayandMs.Ashbyfrom St.Stephenʼs.Lookingtowardsthefuture,weareexcitedtoannouncethatwewillbe travelingtoSt.CasmirSchoolandSt.JosephʼsSchool-Fullerton.Wearegratefulfor theopportunitytospeaktosucheagerminds!

CyberPatriotRound1and2

OnOctober14-16andNovember4-6,ourCyberDonscompetedinAFAʼs CyberPatriotCompetitionRounds1and2,respectively.InbothRound1and2,LBCSI rankedfirstthroughthirdinMaryland.Overall,TeamCharlieʼsAngels,consistingof CharlieHaleʻ23,TeddyMarineʻ24,JackWachterʻ24,DylanKellerʻ24,AidanSachsʻ24, andMichaelLitrentaʻ24,andTeamAurelius,consistingofAnsulChelapurathʻ23,Casey Nazelrodʻ25,NickJacobsʻ23,GracieBrehmʻ23,BenScholtesʻ23,andValRungeʻ23, ranked28thand29thoutof2,062teams.Additionally,MiddleSchoolTeamDaDonsʼ WillBarkeroutdidhimselfinRound2,placing10thinCiscoscoresoutof541teams nationally!Weareproudoftheirperformancesandareexcitedtoseehowtheydoin rounds3and4!

BeforeourCyberDonsdepartedforEstonia,wewerehonoredtobeinvitedto theStateDepartmenttospeakwithNathanielFickʻ95.AmbassadorFickwasrecently appointedtoheadtheStateDepartmentʼsnewBureauofCyberspaceandDigital Policy.PriortojoiningtheStateDepartment,AmbassadorFickwasatechnology executiveandentrepreneur.Earlierinhiscareer,heservedasaMarineCorpsinfantry andreconnaissanceofficer,includingcombattoursinAfghanistanandIraq.Abassador Fickthentranslatedhisexperiencesinthemilitaryinhisbook,“OneBulletAway:The MakingofaMarineOfficer”.AmbassadorFickgraciouslygavehistimetospeakwith ourCyberDonsandgavegreatinsightsintothecurrentstateofcyberspaceandits globalimportancetoday. Weareverygratefulfortheopportunitytomeetwith AmbassadorFickandhopetoseehimagainsoon.

AndrewTerryʻ22

In2017, AndrewTerrydecidedhewantedtoleavehis comfortzoneandpursuehisinterestincybersecurity.Aerabrief stinttrainingCiscoinhisearlydays,Andrewfoundinterestinthe Windows OperatingSystem.HelearnedWindowsforfiveyears, eventuallycomingfullcirclewithaleadershipteamspotteaching ittootherstudents.Alongwithteaching,Andrewtookhis knowledgeastepfurtherandhelpedtocreatemanyofthe challengesusedduringthe2022LBC2.Havinggraduated,Andrew enrolledattheUniversityofCentralFloridaandquicklyfounda homewithintheirComputerScienceprogram.Recently,Andrew andtheUCFcyberteamshavebeenbusytravelingthecountrycompetingina plethoraofcompetitionsrangingfromcapturetheflagtoincidentresponse.While competinginUniversityofBuffaloʼsLockdownChallenge,AndrewandtheUCFteam placed4thoutof25.TheteamʼssuccesscontinuedinSt.Charles,Illinois,wherehis teamandanotherUCFteamcompetedintheU.S.DepartmentofEnergy(DOE) CyberForceProgram.Andrewʼsteamwasabletoplace2nd,andtheotherUCFteam wasabletoplace1stoutof168.TheteamsthentraveledbacktoFloridawherethey virtuallycompetedinNIATEC,acompetitionhostedbytheUniversityofIdaho,placing 1st.WearesoproudofeverythingthatAndrewhasbeenabletoaccomplishinhis shorttimeatUCFandcannotwaittoseewhatelseisinstore!

JakeandMattsharemanythingsincommon.TheybothjoinedLBCSIintheir firstyear,wereapartoftheleadershipteam,andrepresentedtheUnitedStatesinthe CyberBattleofEstonia.

Jake'spresenceinLBCSIhasbeenfeltsincethesecondhewalkedinduringhis freshmanyearin2015.DuringhisfouryearswithLBCSI,heprimarilyfocusedon trainingontheLinuxoperatingsystem,butalsofoundthathehadatalentfor communicatingandunderstandingpeople.Thisculminatedwithhisroleoffield operationsduringhissenioryear,wherehespentcountlesshourswritingnewsletters, visitingschools,andspeakingtosponsors.Jakeʼsskillsalsocametofruitionwhenan opportunitytotraveltoAustraliaarose.HeandMr.Morrillspentninedaysvisiting schoolsandteachingeagerstudentsaboutcybersecurity.Jakeiscurrentlymajoring incomputerscienceatVillanovaUniversityandhasanofferfromAppletojoinasan offensivesecurityengineer.

MatthasbeenapartofLBCSIsince2017,andevenaergraduation,hehas stuckwithiteverystepoftheway.AlongwithJake,MattʼstimewithLBCSIwas primarilyfocusedontrainingwiththeLinuxoperatingsystem.Hisexceptional knowledgeofnotonlyLinux,butcybersecurityingeneral,landedhimaspotonthe leadershipteamduringbothhisjuniorandsenioryears.Mattʼsknowledgewasputto thetestduringhissenioryear,wherehespentamajorityoftheyearcreating challengesforLBC2,LoyolaBlakefieldʼsin-housecapturetheflagcompetition.Mattis currentlyasophomoreatButlerUniversityandhopestocontinuewithacareerin cybersecurityaergraduation.

TheBaltimoreBusinessJournalrecentlygrantedLBCSIʼsJackWachterthe “INNOUnder25”award,anaccoladegiventopromisingyoungentrepreneursintech. Thispastsummer,JackparticipatedinaninternshipatT.RowePriceGroup,Inc, gainingabetterunderstandingofcyberinfinance.Inhisofftime,Jackalsodeveloped astockmarketanalysisprogramandiscurrentlyworkingonaprogramtoassisthimin purchasinghighlysoughtaershoes.JackwasalsoapartofourtriptoEstonia.Heis attheforefrontofLBCSIʼsdevelopmentandwewillkeepyouupdatedonthemany thingshedoesinthefuture!LoyolaBlakefieldʼsarticleonJackcanbefoundhere,and theBaltimoreBusinessjournalʼsarticlecanbefoundhere.
