Alumni Help Allows Dragon Boat Crews to Compete In Vancouver By Sierra Coathup ’15 This past summer the Lowell Dragon Boat team raced in Vancouver at the 25th annual Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival. The team sent two crews, 46 paddlers in all, to compete in the two-day race. Originally there were some financial issues that prohibited some students from going on the trip, but with a generous $3,000 grant from the Lowell Alumni Association to supplement the team’s own fundraising, the team was able to field two strong crews. Although Lowell’s crews (the Cardinal Crewzers and the Lowell Red Tide) did not bring back a gold medal as hoped, they placed 2nd and 4th, the team’s highest placing in the event in five trips since 2003. In addition to being a sporting event, the trip also served as a cultural experience. For some, this was their first time in a foreign country and, for others, their first trip to Canada. The team explored Vancouver during a five-day four-night stay, and some of the activities included a visit to the aquarium, sampling Canadian cuisine, and visiting the many shops and boutiques of downtown Vancouver. Overall, the trip was a success and the team is ever grateful for the support from the Alumni Association. The 9th Annual Lowell Dragon Boat Paddle-a-thon was held on December 20, 2013 as part of the team’s effort to make another run at gold in Vancouver in 2014. [Editor’s Note: Lowell’s dragon boat teams are coached by faculty member and alumnus Brian Danforth ‘84]
