Ms. Kristen Sandor MS History Kristen Sandor is our middle school history teacher. Ms. Sandor teaches 6th SC History, 7th World Geography, and 8th Ancient Civilizations. Ms. Sandor has been a teacher at Lowcountry Preparatory School for 14 years. Ms. Sandor brings energy and creativity in the classroom as well as brings history to live with interactive lessons and real world connections to the topics she covers. Most recently, her 8th grade Ancient Civilizations class created models to represent Ancient River Valley Civilizations of Egypt.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT Also, her 7th grade World Geography class practiced reading a map and learning about our interstate highway system! Students were engaged and learned a very important skill in the event that GPS or Google maps goes down! Finally, her 6th grade South Carolina history class created original ghost stories with roots or connects set in South Carolina. These stories will be shared with Mrs. Livingston’s first grade class.

Student Spotlight Shannon Hungerford -6th grade Mrs. McCallister states: “I'd like to nominate Shannon Hungerford for the 6th grade student spotlight for the October issue. She is always prepared, eager to participate in class, and goes above and beyond on her writing assignments in Grammar. Her writing skills and creativity are incredible for her age. Additionally, I think someday we may have a budding famous author on our hands! Shannon truly loves learning, and she is a kind and caring person who is always willing to help out in any way in our classroom. Shannon also played on the tennis team this fall. She exemplifies what the meaning of an exceptional student should be like at LPS!”

Robert Peace -7th grade Mrs. McCallister states: “I would like to nominate Robert Peace for the student spotlight. While Robert might not always have perfect grades, he shines with his contagious smile and positive attitude. He is always polite, kind and happy to participate in class. Robert likes learning and contributing to our class discussions in Introduction to Languages, and he also shows his artistic side on projects that lend themselves to creativity. Keep shining Robert!” Mrs. Blomdahl shares that “Robert is a respectful and kind young man who always works hard and does his best. He is creative and works well with others.”

Student Spotlight Sophie Whitman -8th grade Ms. Schroeder states: “Sophie is always engaged and on task. She goes out of her way to help clean up messes that she didn't create, she enthusiastically participates in everything, and her behavior is one of the best in her class. She's so kind and sweet to everyone.” Mrs. Blomdahl shares that “Sophie has blossomed into such a mature and insightful student. She grasps the themes and underlying messages in our To Kill A Mockingbird discussions and serves as an avid participant in class discussion.”

Fin Friends October 18

The Fin Friends program is an innovative initiative that brings together students of different age groups to build strong intergenerational connections while engaging in collaborative learning experiences. Older students are paired with younger students, and together, they embark on exciting education adventures. These activities not only promote academic growth but also nurture empathy, leadership skills, and a sense of belonging within the school community. Most recently, students engaged in an activity which consisted of tracing and cutting out handprints to craft an American flag for the Veterans Day program.

PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

Fishing Club On Sunday, Oct 8th, the middle school fishing club spent a beautiful afternoon on the shoreline of Pawleys Island. Our surf fishing expedition, the first of this year, resulted in the catching of a puffer fish, a Spanish mackerel and a crab. Much to the dismay of the group, we had a spinner shark on the line, but we couldn't quite reel it all the way in. The fishing club is a causal opportunity open to those students in middle school who enjoy putting a line in the water and spending time in nature with classmates. The club works to coordinate one outing per month and anyone interested in participating is encouraged to email Mr. Wehunt for more information.

Halloween Parade October 31

8th Grade Physical Science Ms. Schroeder’s Physical Science class recently completed a three day lab about velocity and acceleration! We practiced calculating both using a car on a ramp, and graphed data on how the ramp's height affected the car's velocity.

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

7th Grade English Language Arts In 7th grade English, students have recently finished their unit on the classic novel, The Outsiders. Throughout the unit, students have explored the themes of friendship and family as well as the damage of stereotyping as it relates to different groups. Students also discussed several symbols that take on a deeper meaning in the text. Examples of these symbols include: gold rings, sunsets, hair grease, and cars.

Students were then tasked with creating car flags for both the Greasers and the Socs which represented their group values along with common stereotypes associated with them. These creative flags also used symbols from the text to represent each group along with a motto or significant quote.
