ISSUE 1 | APRIL 2017

Loving Local began in May 2016, by husband and wife team, Stephanie and Randy Klaver. Both having an entrepreneurial spirit, they found themselves in the artisan community with their first business project together, “In a Jar.” Being makers themselves, they started connecting with other small shop owners and felt a tug in their hearts to help grow the shop local movement. With that spark, Loving Local caught flame during the planning of their first market, “Made in Chilliwack,” which took place in June 2016. Since then, they’ve hosted a number of successful markets with vendor applications and shopper attendance numbers rising for each. They discovered a strong passion for serving their fellow small business owners and watching their businesses flourish. In addition to public markets and festivals, Loving Local is publishing this monthly magazine to provide a resource for all things local all year.

Behind the Brand | Cathy Terepocki Interview by Stephanie Klaver Photographed by Sharalee Prang

Q: What inspired you to become a professional ceramic artist and eventually sell your unique functional dishes and jewelry? I knew that I wanted to work in some sort of a creative field so, I decided to get a fine arts degree at the Alberta College of Art and Design and I received a major in ceramics. Having invested the time, energy and resources into my schooling, I was determined to make a career out of it after graduating. Q: When and where did you sell your first piece? I sold quite a few of my functional pieces while I was still in school. I also started venturing into jewelry during the summer between second and third year. I started by selling them to co-workers at a restaurant in Calgary. By the end of the summer I had three or four wholesale accounts. I did this, in part, to learn some of the practical business side of being an artist as they don’t focus too much on this in the BFA program. Q: If you could go back to when you began your business, with all of the wisdom you have now, what advice would you give yourself? I’d probably tell myself to work a little less when my kids were really young, to enjoy this time.

L OV ING L O CA L  |   8

Q: Turning an enjoyable hobby or past-time into a business can be a little tricky, how do you make sure it remains something you still enjoy while also bringing in an income? I make sure to carve out time for experimentation and product development without thinking too much about who will buy it or how much I could sell it for. It’s really important to keep growing as an artist and still find the joy in creating pieces so, just taking time to make for the sake of making is important. The rest seems to work itself out.

Q: Where can people find and purchase your collections now? My collections are sold across Canada and in the United States. My local locations are; Spruce Collective and Confetti Floral in Abbotsford, Refinery House in Chilliwack. In Vancouver there are several location including; Walrus on Cambie St., Room 6 in Deep Cove and Neighbourhood Quality Goods on Main St. I also have an online shop. Q: What can we expect to see from you in the next year? When I moved here (to Yarrow) three years ago, I had an established wholesale business with sales throughout Canada. My studio was at home and because I work a lot I didn’t have much of a local presence. My goal for the year is to be more involved in the local arts and business community in the Fraser Valley and maybe do a semi-annual studio sale and open house. I’m also interested in product design so I’ve been doing a bit of work in that area and would like to explore some more options there.

way of life, what are your thoughts? I hope it’s more than a trend! I hope it’s more about sustainability and ethics, than aesthetics. Q: We love to get to know people aside from their business as well, what are three things people may not know about you? I operated a mobile shop out of an airstream trailer for 10 years, my kids were born in three different provinces; BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. My Pine Creek series was named after a town in Northern Australia where I worked at a gold mine. Q: What is your favorite thing about living in the Fraser Valley? I would have to say the Vedder River and the local berries. Also, we’re living close to family for the first time ever!

Q: Tell us a little bit about your family! I have three kids, Iris is 12, Hazel is 10 “It’s really important to Q: If you could give a shout out to and Ole is 7. They sing a lot and they keep growing as an artist a couple of your favorite local small like to get dirty. A couple of years ago and still find the joy in shops, who would they be? when the school were on strike, the All the great shops I mentioned that kids were helping us dig up potatoes in creating” sell my work of course. Also, Hazel the garden. Afterwards they just kept Springs, Yarrow needed good coffee quite desperately! digging until they each had dug a hole as deep as they are Curly Kale Eatery because they are committed through and tall. Then they added seats, ledges and conjoining tunnels. through to quality ingredients from local sources and come They lived like mole children for a week! A Local Gem | Refinery House Written by Samantha Lenz Styled by Jenna Montroy Photographed by Umbrella Tree Photography

“it’s a place where we can take journeys with people through some of their greatest transitions.“

The Refinery House Health and Beauty Collective has been getting ‘real’ since August of 2016. Owners Aly McRae (Creative Director & Lead Stylist) and Heidi Epp (Operations Manager) have been excited to share that they are more than just a one-stop beauty studio in the Fraser Valley. Between the ladies years of experience in the business world and a decade in the hair and beauty industry, it was no surprise that they came up with the idea of opening a collective space to showcase the best of what the Valley has to offer.

Located in the Garrison Crossing area of Chilliwack, this street-front store provides customers with a cozy ‘at home’ vibe in their own community. Unlike your typical salon, there is nothing typical or glamorous about this studio. What you will find at The Refinery is an eclectic design space that has been decorated with vintage and restored pieces, making it feel as though you’re not in a ‘salon’ but in someone’s living room. Since launching their health and beauty studio, Aly and Heidi have made it their mission to help women not only tackle their outer beauty but, most importantly their inner beauty. At Refinery House it’s truly about the people and the love for them that makes this studio flourish. “We love their stories and how they found us,” says Heidi. Of course there are plenty of other places to go and get your hair done but, at Refinery, they are actually conscious of the needs and lifestyle that individual deals with to make sure it works for them every day. “It’s about becoming better at who we are and what we do, being ‘refined’ if you will, and recognizing the whole of a person,” as Heidi and Aly both clearly state. For Heidi and Aly, the studio’s message was simple, “it’s a place where we can take a journey with people through some of their greatest transitions.” It’s a rare occasion to find a studio that cares so deeply for the person behind the hair and makeup, which at the end of the day holds more value than just looks. This is why they offer services beyond beauty and aesthetics by incorporating health and wellness. The space also provides counseling, nutritional, and midwifery services. At Refinery House it’s also about becoming better at whom they already are. It’s recognition that, yes hair can look great, but the heart can be sad. Life is hard, parenting, marriage, it’s all difficult. This is why they have collectively brought together businesses and individuals who can make this space excel and legitimize what real beauty means while promoting self-love. At Refinery you will never leave feeling unappreciated. The core of this studio is to better equip you to create your own self-love and to accept your worth in the most natural way possible. Aly and Heidi truly believe that “this sort of acceptance is what we want for all the women (men and children) who come into our space.” It’s not about identifying with the fact that someone may have great hair, but about not taking beauty or themselves too seriously. They want to normalize things that are normal; gray hairs, imperfect skin, and the emotional struggles during transitions in life. If you are interested or wanting to know more about Refinery House, or other services provided such as hair, makeup, waxing, brow shaping, lash lifting, and many more, please visit their website: www.refinery.house Location: 5622 Vedder Rd, Chilliwack BC. Campbell Valley Regional Park is located in South Langley and its forests, marshland, rolling hills and open meadows are home to an abundance of plants and wildlife. Boasting in beautiful scenery and 29 kilometers of walking trails and boardwalks, it’s the perfect location for a scavenger hunt! Whether your child is a toddler or schoolaged, you can easily tailor a hunt that’s both fun and educational at any age. We packed up our one and two year old for an afternoon of foraging in the park and here are a few supplies we suggest bringing: a small clipboard, scavenger hunt list, magnifying glass, small basket, and a snack Entering the park from the 16th Avenue entrance will bring you to a free parking lot, washroom facilities, and interpretive map. Follow the Little River Loop Trail to traverse over the creek on one of the many wooden boardwalks. Keep a lookout, as there are dozens of beautiful bird species sailing through the small trees and bushes. This tranquil park is the perfect escape from the daily grind and has a way of allowing you to completely relax and enjoy a serene backdrop of nature surrounding you. Preserved trails allow little ones to experience freedom and truly adventure, and parents to be a little more carefree. Everyone is able to enjoy some adventuring of their own. As we watched our children discover new and different pieces of nature, we were reminded why we love to immerse our family into the beautiful pockets of nature that the Fraser Valley has to offer. We arrived home with our foraged goodies that our littles were so proud to find, and wanted to be able to display and enjoy them for just a bit longer. Turn the page for a beautiful and creative way to get the most out of your nature scavenger hunt finds!

Continue the scavenger hunt fun with a Spring Terrarium on the next page!

Pussy Willows Salal

Succulents

Huckleberry Branches Moss

Living in such a lush and green region in British Columbia and having endless vegetation all around us, a simple walk through the park can get your creative juices flowing and prove resourceful when foraging for your own floral home decor. Spring time is a great time to get out and be creative. With all of the bright colours and lovely smells, who wouldn’t want to bring some of that inside your home to enjoy? In the Fraser Valley we have some great staple greenery such as salal, ferns, and evergreens. A simple drive up a forest road and you will begin to see all nature has to offer. As spring emerges from winter, trees begin to bloom; pussy willows, magnolia trees and cherry blossoms all add great colour, texture, and heighten your home floral designs or terrariums. Moss works great for covering space and gives a really organic look to your arrangements or potted gardens. The best part? It can be found right in your own backyard! Succulents such as hens-andchicks are becoming trendier as houseplants, as well as in our outdoor landscapes. They are very easy to grow from cuttings or can be purchased at almost any local floral shop or garden store. The most tell-tale sign of spring are the flowers! Flowers such as: tulips, hyacinth, anemones, ranunculus, hellebores, daffodils, lily of the valley and peonies can be found all over during spring time. You can grow them in your own backyard or if it’s easier, stop by your local flower shop and pick up a small bouquet of spring florals to accent all the other natural goodies you’ve foraged!

Behind the Brand | Jack Coffee Written by Stephanie Klaver Styled by Jenna Montroy Photography by Umbrella Tree Photography Jack Coffee has been brewing artisanal coffee for a little over one year now, but what makes them so unique is how and where they brew it. “Put ourselves out there and cast our nets as wide as we can” Jack Coffee has been brewing artisanal coffee for a little over one year now but, what makes them so unique is how and where they brew it. Courtney and Miles, the husband and wife team behind the brand, hit the ground running with their pour-over coffee bar system. After brewing their favorite local grounds for their friends and family, they knew that they were on to something different but, more importantly, something they found a passion for. Soon after being married, this power couple started spending weekends in Vancouver discovering local coffee shops specializing in third-wave coffee. “The third wave of coffee is a movement to produce high-quality coffee and to consider coffee as an artisanal foodstuff, like wine, rather than a commodity.”1 Is there any other way you could source this? Like at the bottom of the page? Finding a passion for the craft behind brewing methods and cared-for coffee is how they spent their time away from their day jobs as lifeguards. Courtney and Miles began building connections with their favorite local craft coffee shops, and when an opportunity presented itself for the duo to purchase equipment and take over the hobby-brand of Jack Coffee, they decided to “put [themselves] out there and cast [their] nets as wide as [they could].”

Positioning themselves as a full-service pour over coffee (and tea) bar has created a unique space for them to not only connect with their clients and coffee lovers but, to also educate them on the difference of third-wave coffees. Offering customizable menu options and the opportunity to learn about the origin, the naturally occurring flavours and artisanal brewing methods are aspects these innovative business owners are very proud of. At the ages of 21 and 22-years-old, this inspiring young couple was eager to gain momentum in their new business venture and began by meeting with as many event planners and engaged couples as they could. This persistence and determinations are paying off as Jack Coffee’s “jackalope” stamped cups are gaining recognition throughout the Lower Mainland. When it comes to ambition, these two have it - Don’t let their young age fool you, they are wise beyond their years. “It’s been a huge learning opportunity, and we’ve been really surprised by the response.” Courtney and Miles are headed toward a bright future as they share some plans for the year ahead. Keep an eye out for their brand new custom roast “Jack Roasters” available as a brew option or in take home bags at events and markets. If you’re looking to add something unique and interactive for your next event, big or small, connect with Jack Coffee!
