Dear Guests, Welcome to the Jerusalem Ball! This evening was inspired by the Faraway Places project – an installation of art work designed specifically for rooms in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Hadassah University Hospital Department of Medicine Ein Kerem, Jerusalem. This project, which was led by Nehama Grenimann Bauch, involved ten artists who donated their time and talent to Hadassah by creating beautiful works of art for the ICU, which improve the environment for the patients, families and staff. These international artists are Judith Margolis, Sharon Binder, Chana Cromer, Ruth Cohn, Anat Yefet, Galina Blaikh, Julia Lagus, Mallory Serebrin, Zoe Pawlak, and Yulia Polyakov. We are grateful for their contribution and pleased to honor them tonight. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting Young Hadassah International’s Jerusalem Ball. As young leaders, members of Young Hadassah International from around the world are dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the ground-breaking work being conducted at the Hadassah Medical Organization – work that directly impacts medical care for all citizens around the world. Faraway Places is an art project created by Nehama Grenimann, driven by a desire to honor the legacy of her dear friend, Timora Avitzur (of blessed memory) who died of Leukemia at the age of 18 after intensive treatment at Hadassah-Ein Kerem and Har Hatzofim. Timora was a great lover of art, theater, poetry and literature. She was a writer herself, and a great supporter of Nehama’s art, having followed her work since the day she first put pencil to paper. Based on experiences in the hospital, discussions with many other artists, friends and professionals, the idea for this project finally became a reality that serves to provide inspiration and comfort for the painful realities that go along with illness and the recovery process. Inspired by personal experiences, the contemporary artwork is specially designed for the hospital environment. It is created with everyone in mind–– staff, patients, and visitors. The project includes ten pairs of separate, corresponding works of art that have been installed in the patients’ rooms in the Intensive Care Unit A of Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital. The artwork has been produced by a team of carefully chosen, international, contemporary artists, to whom the issue is very close to heart: Judith Margolis, Sharon Binder, Chana Cromer, Ruth Cohn, Anat Yefet, Galina Blaikh, Julia Lagus, Mallory Serebrin Jacobs, Zoe Pawlak, and Yulia Polyakov. These artists, in addition to several local volunteers and artists, are driven by their own personal experiences and thoughts. They combined efforts with art therapists and consulted relevant research. They each created a very different interpretation within the space that they were assigned. On April 8, 2010, an opening event took place at Hadassah Ein Karem, to present the artwork for the first time to the artists, Hadassah International staff and Hadassah members.

imora was born in 1982, on the first day of Hol HaMoed Succot. She was a lively, fun-loving girl who loved to sing, dance, read, and write stories. Soon after her Bat Mitzva, she was diagnosed as suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Over the next six-plus years she was treated in Hadassah’s Pediatric Oncology unit by one of the hospital’s bestloved doctors, Professor Gabriel Cividalli. During the course of her illness she underwent two separate bone marrow transplants, as well as various experimental treatments, all at Hadassah Ein Karem. She died on January 5, 2001, after spending the last month of her life in Hadassah’s Intensive Care Unit, where the medical staff cared for her with great dedication. Timora was blessed with talent in many different areas, including theater, music, and art, as well as intense curiosity and strong analytic abilities. The talent that she developed most fully during her short life was writing. She left behind many stories and poems, some of which reflect her thoughts, feelings, and experiences while she was ill. After she died, we found a collection of her poems, “Principally Poems,” which she’d edited and arranged chronologically during the last year of her life.

The Young Hadassah Ball being held this evening is a special event in different ways. Young professionals have the opportunity to get together and enjoy good company, music, dance, dinner, and refreshments. It is also a chance for these dedicated young professionals to helo the children hospitalized in our Mount Scopus Pediatrics Department, which will benefit from the proceeds of this evening. The Mount Scopus Pediatrics Department– the largest general pediatric department in Jerusalem– treats children from the capital and the greater Jerusalem area, as well as those referred from around the country. The outdated facility was in desperate need of expanding, modernizing, and refurbishing, and new sophisticated equipment must be purchased. Funds raised this evening will play a vital role in helping Hadassah to help the children, the young professionals of the future. And as we all know, Hadassah is the future, building bridges to peace, to health, and to the future of the State of Israel. On behalf of the sick children, I thank you for your support.

Globally renowned for treating all patients with compassionate care regardless of ethnicity or religion, the Hadassah Medical Center is a world-class medical institution, which was nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. Despite terror and turmoil within Israel’s borders, Hadassah continually reaches out to countries everywhere with emergency relief, clinical training, and research breakthroughs. Patients from around the world seek out Hadassah’s two hills of healing in Ein Kerem and on Mount Scopus for their innovative medical procedures. By increasing awareness about the Hadassah Medical Center, Young Hadassah International enhances the reputation of Israel as the home of a pioneering medical center that shares its pacesetting expertise with the world. Hadassah Hospital–Mount Scopus first opened its doors in 1939, the region’s first modern medical facility. For 10 years, Hadassah Mount Scopus faithfully served all the peoples of the area, without regard for race, religion or ethnic origin. From 1948 - 1967, when Hadassah-Mount Scopus was cut off from the rest of Jerusalem, the building stood abandoned and deteriorated. In 1978, completely restored to its former beauty, with all vestiges of war and neglect erased, the hospital reopened its doors. Today, the hospital serves both Arabs and Jews from the northern neighborhoods of Jerusalem, the surrounding towns and villages, as well as patients who come from all parts of the country. But the Pediatrics Department badly needs renovating to bring the facilities up to date and enable it to serve the everexpanding population of children who need its expertise.
Building Bridges to Peace in Hadassah’s Pediatrics Department on Mount Scopus When their children are first admitted to the hospital, families from diverse backgrounds oftentimes do not appreciate the common bonds that unite them; as days pass there is a gradual dissipation of the pervasive suspicion, fear, and hostility. One mother may be in the washroom when her child begins to cry, and another mother will replace the baby’s pacifier or pick him up to comfort him. A mother can be sleeping when a food tray is brought, and another parent sharing the room saves her portion. In time, one family goes down to the cafeteria for coffee, and brings back snacks for the other families. It makes little difference if these families are Arab or Jewish. As parents from opposite sides of the divide come to know one another as individuals, perspectives gradually begin to change and stereotypes blur. To one another, they are now only parents of sick children, battling a common enemy—disease. Today, the Pediatrics Department has an annual occupancy of well over 100%, reaching 150% in winter months.
The Renovation And Expansion Will:
• Reduce the number of children in a room • Allow parents to stay with their child overnight • Provide consultation rooms for parents and medical staff • Add staff and seminar meeting rooms • Include the purchase of advanced medical equipment

Acrylic Paint And Collage, 280X40 About Flowering and Almond” The blossoming of almond trees in the seasonal cycle of growth represents regeneration, rebirth and healing: the hills and valleys of the curving road to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital are full of almond trees. In the fall of 2009, Chana took photos of the almond trees around the hospital. Some almonds from the previous season remained on the branches; Chana picked the dried almonds and twigs from the trees. These were then used in the collage and paint work of “Almond.” When the trees blossomed in January and February, Chana photographed them again. The photos were incorporated into the collage and painting of “Flowering.”
Bio Chana uses a variety of media on textiles and paper, including silkscreen, etching, assemblage, appliqué, and painting. Born in Italy and grew up in Kansas City. She immigrated to Israel in 1972 and has exhibited in one person and group shows in Israel, the USA, Russia, and Austria. Oil Colors, 150X38 About A Sky for the Morning What Zoë has created are two paintings that continue with her series “Where we Were and Are”. “Where we Were and Are” is a series of fictional landscape paintings Zoë has been working on for over a year. They are emotive passages of land and sky derived from memory and invention. The title refers to the act of remembering and the notion that imagination plays an integral role in how we situate ourselves in the present according to the places we have been in the past.
Bio Zoë Pawlak grew up and still lives in White Rock, British Columbia. After having completed her BFA at Langley Fine Arts, Zoë participated in four major shows in the Lower Mainland in Canada, including her first solo Vancouver exhibition at the Interurban Gallery called Profession of Hurt. Oil Colors, Six Works Of 35X35 About Mandala When Yulia began working on this project she was looking for something that would be more than just a nice picture to put on the wall, she was looking for something more spiritual, with more content, something that can mirror the journey that patients are passing during their stay in Intensive Care. Yulia chose to use the form of a Mandala, a symbol representing wholeness that derives from Buddhist and Hindu tradition. She also chose colors that, according to the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui, bring positive effects on people who are ill and help them recover quickly.
Bio Yulia was born in 1977 in the Ural Mountains, Russia. She immigrated to Israel at age 18, leaving her home and parents behind. Yulia attended art school in Russia, but found it too confining, structured and dull. From the moment she left art school, she began her own art exploration, one that took her beyond standard rules and strict schools. Later on Yulia studied privately with well-known artists in Tel-Aviv and in India, of which the most inspirational and influential was the Japanese painter Meera, who combines art and meditation in her workshops.

35x35שישה עבודות בצבעי שמן אודות מנדלה כאשר יוליה החלה לעבוד על פרוייקט מחוזות רחוקים היא חיפשה משהו שיהיה יותר מסתם ציור נחמד לתלות על הקיר ,היא חיפשה משהו רוחני יותר ,בעל תוכן רב יותר ,משהו שביכולתו לשקף את המסע שהחולים עוברים במהלך שהותם ביחידת טיפול נמרץ .יוליה בחרה להשתמש במנדלה ,סמל שמקורו בבודהיזם ובהינדואיזם ,המייצג שלמות .היא בחרה צבעים אשר ,על פי תורת הפנג שואי הסינית ,משפיעים בצורה חיובית על אנשים חולים ותורמים להחלמתם המהירה.
ביוגרפיה יולה נולדה ב 1977-בהרי אורל ,רוסיה .היא עלתה לארץ בגיל 18והשאירה מאחור את ביתה והוריה .יולה למדה בבית ספר לאמנות ברוסיה ,אך הרגישה שהוא היה מסוגר ומובנה מידי .מהרגע בו עזבה את בית הספר לאמנות היא החלה לחקור את האמנות בצורה עצמאית ,דבר שהוביל אותה אל מעבר לחוקים סטנדרטיים ובתי ספר נוקשים .מאוחר יותר יוליה החלה שיעורים פרטיים עם אמנים מוכרים בתל אביב ובהודו ,מהם מקור ההשראה המשפיע ביותר הגיע מהציירת היפנית מירה ,אשר משלבת אמנות ומדיטציה בסדנאות שלה.
Oil Colors, 300X40 About Night & Day The two panels, divided into 3 and 4 pieces, represent the colors of day and night and the passage between them as day breaks and dark night falls. Anat wanted to create a dream-like image, a faraway place, open for free images to emerge, to bring the sea and the sky with no specific form, in order to allow each person to be drawn into the image. She aims for the viewers to see and feel through the colors something that is different from the surroundings of the hospital room. A brand new bright day, a colorful night…
Bio Anat Yefet is an artist who works mostly with oil colors, oil pastels, dry pastels and carbon. Originally from the city of Rishon Le-Zion, she currently lives in Tel-Aviv Yafo. She has studied at “Shir-Art”, in her hometown, and later on at the “Avni Institute” in Tel-Aviv. She is a graduate of the “Libera accademia di belle arti” of Florence, Italy with a BA in visual arts and graphic design. Today she works and paints at her home studio in T.A., teaches drawing & painting in both private and group lessons and is currently studying for her Masters degree in Art-Therapy at the Lesley University in Netanya.
