How things come to be... “A poet once said, ‘The whole universe is in a glass of wine.’ We will probably never know in what sense he meant it, for poets do not write to be understood. But it is true that if we look at a glass of wine closely enough we see the entire universe. There are the things of physics: the twisting liquid which evaporates depending on the wind and weather, the reflection in the glass; and our imagination adds atoms. The glass is a distillation of the earth’s rocks, and in its composition we see the secrets of the universe’s age, and the evolution of stars. What strange array of chemicals are in the wine? How did they come to be? There are the ferments, the enzymes, the substrates, and the products. There in wine is found the great generalization; all life is fermentation. Nobody can discover the chemistry of wine without discovering, as did Louis Pasteur, the cause of much disease. How vivid is the claret, pressing its existence into the consciousness that watches it! If our small minds, for some convenience, divide this glass of wine, this universe, into parts -- physics, biology, geology, astronomy, psychology, and so on -- remember that nature does not know it! So let us put it all back together, not forgetting ultimately what it is for. Let it give us one more final pleasure; drink it and forget it all!”

6 4 3 Rules of the Game:

1. Request all the materials form your server or bartender (£5 deposit per game up to 6 players). Shots listed at the end. 2. Understand the goal of the game. The aim of the game is to be the first player to reach the end by moving across the board from square 1 to square 100. You will travel the board from base to top, right, then left and so on. 3. Determining who goes first. Rolling the dice twice, the person with the highest combined roll starts first. The person with the second highest goes 2nd and so on. BUT DO NOT MOVE THE COUNTER. 4. Commence playing. The first player to roll a 6 can enter the board. Each subsequent player must also throw a 6 to enter the board. The dice must be rolled again to show the number of squares that the player entering the board may move initially. Place the marker on the appropriate square. Each player may only roll once. 5. Continue playing: a. Snake: if a player lands at the tip of the snake’s head, his or her marker slides down to the

square at the snake’s tail and they must drink the relevant shot :) On doing so they must replenish the relevant shot taken for the next turn, each player can only consume the same shot once. b. Ladder: if a player lands on a square that is at the base of a ladder, his or her marker moves to the square at the top of the ladder and continues from there. c. One person one square: when landing on a square that is already occupied by another player’s marker, the player already on the square is moved back to the beginning and must throw a 6 to re-enter the game. 6. Complete the game. The first player to square 100 is the winner but you must have the correct number on the dice to land on the 100 mark. The last person to win must buy everyone a drink of their choice – its the rules!

So to create your own classic drink let us now glance into the past though not stare and chose from one of the liquor bases, then the classic processes of making drinks that follow and let us do the rest:

CRUSTA: Characterized by a sugar rim on the glass, spirit (brandy being the most common), maraschino liqueur, aromatic bitters, lemon juice.

COLLINS: A traditional long drink stirred with ice in the same glass it is served in and diluted with club soda, e.g. Tom Collins

BISHOP: A great beverage made with claret or port bitter orange sugar and boiling water

COBBLER: A traditional long drink that is characterized by a glass with shaved ice that is formed into a centered cone, topped by slices of fruit

DAISY: A traditional long drink consisting of a base spirit, lemon juice, and usually either grenadine, raspberry syrup, sugar, or gum syrup pending base. Often, chartreuse is floated on top as well, and soda water is sometimes included.


FIX: A traditional long drink related to Cobblers but containing lemon and sugar mixed in a shaker and served over crushed ice.

FIZZ: A Fizz is a type of mixed drink—a variation on the older Sours family containing a base spirit lemon or limejuice, egg white, and a sweetener with addition of a soda top

A traditional half-long drink that is characterized by inclusion of sugar and egg yolk beaten and base spirit traditionally incorporating ale or beer.

NEGUS: Is the name of a drink made of wine, most commonly port, mixed with hot water, spiced and sugar. Base alcohol can be added to lengthen strengthen and flavour the drink

A drink consisting of base spirit, sugar, and mint mixed over ice. The most common is the Mint Julep.

SLING: A traditional long drink prepared by stirring ingredients over ice in the glass and filling up with juice or club soda.

SMASH: A drink made of mint, sugar, soda water, and alcoholic liquor, usually brandy.

SHRUB: Our home made love & death shrub cordial a blend of seasonal fruit and fruit vinegar masceration mixed with your choosen spirit base and poured over ice

SOUR: Sours are mixed drinks containing a base spirit lemon or lime juice, egg white, and a sweetener

TODDY: A drink made of alcoholic liquor with hot water, sugar, and sometimes spice or tea.
